this morning, wild weather coast to coast. >> california's biggest wildfire exploding in size overnight. hundreds of homes threatened. homeowners and animals fleeing the flames. while the plains get a quiet night before a new round of severe storms. we're live with the latest. a month after that cargo jet crashed caught on camera, officials announce what brought it down. outbreak. a serious health scare prompted by a product sold at costco. what you need to know. plus, this -- >> i'm grateful for all the support. >> picture of health. angelina jolie makes her first public appearance since her mastectomy. even brad pitt touched by the support from around the world.

good monday morning, everybody. we've been tracking the weather overnight. as we have for days. from severe thunderstorms in new england to the heat and winds fanning this california powerhouse fire. >> it's living up to its name this morning. tripling in size in the last 24 hours, forcing thousands from their homes. and not forgotten, the storm zone in oklahoma. littered with wreckage. twisters claiming several lives over the weekend, including three veteran storm chasers. we start in oklahoma with devin dwyer. >> reporter: downed trees, smashed cars, and splintered homes. a heart-wrenching and all-too-familiar scene in oklahoma city. residents are picking up pieces of their lives. >> i really loved my home. this house is 117 years old. i'm like, we're okay. it's going to be fine. and no, it's just not. >> reporter: the weekend storms spawned five tornadoes, damaging winds and hail and extreme flash floods.

the rushing waters from oklahoma to missouri swallowing homes and highways. authorities say the twisters and floods claimed more than a dozen lives, including four children, a veteran storm chaser, his son, and a colleague. the search continues for several others still missing. >> it's been hard to handle this magnitude of disaster throughout the state. but we'll recover. >> reporter: out west, a raging wildfire is sweeping the mountains north of los angeles. it's consumed six homes and sent nearly 3,000 residents fleeing for safety. >> this is the most devastating fire i have experienced. it's terrifying. >> reporter: battling the blaze, an army of 2,000 firefighters, helicopters, and planes. they're struggling to get an upper hand. with only 20% of the fire contained. >> it's a volatile situation, as you can tell by the wind. it's extreme fire behavior. >> reporter: overnight, violent storms hit the northeast, knocking out power to more than 40,000 residents in northern new england.

the biggest threat for severe weather today is over the central plains. a major tornado outbreak is not expected. >> devin dwyer in washington for us this morning. d devin mentioned the three veteran storm chasers killed doing what they loved. >> tim samaras, carl young, and tim's son, paul, were well known to meteorologist's like our own ginger zee. >> reporter: here's what we know. tim was found in his car. the others pulled from the car by a tornado. the others, pulled by the tornado from the kor. one found a half mile away. tim, who led the team, was an esteemed scientist. in the storm chasing community, he was known as not only one of the best storm chasers but as one of the most cautious. >> we lost someone who has already saved countless lives in his research. >> reporter: he chased because he wanted to learn, to improve

warning systems and help better forecast tornadoes in the future. just this mast year, we documented one of his scientific expeditions. tim and his son taking us along. one of their many good-byes to his wife, kathy. >> see you later. >> have a good trip. >> reporter: on our trip, he showed us his baby, the kahuna, what could be the fastest camera in the world. actually, 82 cameras in one. it helped him firsthand studying the birth of a lightning strike. our journey took us 800 miles in four states. but he also knew the real dangers of doing this. at the end of our chase, he said it was his desire to know more, to inform us all, that fueled him to go out again. >> the little boy in me just wants to come out here and watch and stare. >> reporter: ginger zee, abc news, el reno, oklahoma. >> dangerous work there. a new round of threatening storms today. we'll check the forecast if a few minutes. breaking overnight, details of what caused this plane crash

at bagram air base in afghanistan. you probably remember the horrifying dash cam video from when the plane went down shortly after takeoff. there sit. killing all seven americans on board. initial indications are that shifting cargo inside the huge plane caused the disaster. the plane was carrying military vehicles and otherargo that apparently broke loose and dragged the plane down. and more breaking news. this from china. the death toll from a fire at a poultry plant is up to 112. it's expected to continue to rise. the fire broke out before dawn when hundreds of workers were inside the plant. dozens got out of the building. but state media says the plant's gating were locked. the fire is being blamed on an ammonia leak. the court-martial begins later this morning for bradley manning. supporters gathered for a rally outside of the courthouse. he's admitted to sending thousands of pages of classified material to wikileaks. he could get life in prison if

he's convicted of aiding the enemy. jury selection gets under way tomorrow in the high profile trial. the trial of notorious mobster whitey bulger. lawyers say he'll take the stand in his own defense. rangers at yosemite will search for a teenager swept over a waterfall done a church trip. eyewitnesses say they saw the man get pulled to the edge of a nearly 600-foot waterfall that afternoon. aging action hero steven seagal now joins dennis rodman as an improbable celebrity diplomat. he helped arrange meetings between u.s. lawmakers and top u.s. officials this weekend. the actor is apparently well-connected in russia. having met with vladimir putin and other russian officials. time for the weather across the nation. morn thunderstorms from boston to the nation's capital. stormy in the southeast. severe storms with hail and

the month sharply lower. earlier today in tokyo, the nikkei was down. all major u.s. markets closed down on friday, the dow by more than 00 points. stock futures show a positive open today. a new investigation of the irs shows the agency paid about $50 million to hold hundreds of conferences over the last couple of years. at one of those get togethers, there they are. employees are seen line dancing. the conferences took place between 2010 and last year. the report is released tomorrow. and the government and apple are set to square off this morning over accusations of price-fixes ebooks. the justice department says apple conspired with book publishe publishers.

alcoholic beverages may soon have nutrition labels like those on food packages. they will have serving size, calories, carbs, and fats. right now, it's volunteer. some companies want the labels to advertise low-calorie products. other companies don't want consumers counting calories. a disappointing weekend at the box office for will smith. his film came in third. fast and furious 6 held on for the third straight week. and the magician thriller "now you see me" debuted in second place. no more breakfast in bed for new york's biggest hotel, the hilton. room service is not just that popular. others see it as way to cut costs. >> it's a bit of a bummer.

southeast. airport delays possible along the east coast in boston, new york, philadelphia, washington wag, charlotte, and miami. now to the hepatitis aout break linked to frozen berries sold at costco. >> some illnesses in southern california. john schriffen reports from los angeles. >> reporter: shoppers at costco were surprised to find it was linked to 30 cases of hepatitis a. >> it's shocking. >> it makes you wonder. >> reporter: costco pulled the berries from the shelves after people became sick in five western states. >> we just used it as a family breakfast a couple of weeks ago. we put it in muffins. >> reporter: anyone exposed should be vaccinated quickly. los angeles has set up seven clinics to screen victims. >> there's only a two-week period. every day there is a delay, they could miss the chance to prevent

this. >> reporter: nine people have been hospitalized with hepatitis a, the symptoms include fever, and pain. it comes from food workers who don't properly wash their hands. >> reporter: seven of the cases are in california. where screenings began just days after the outbreak. townsend farms believes the tainted berries linked to pomegranate seeds from turkey are only sold at costco. costco is trying to reach out to customers. in the death toll growing from the res pa toir disease known as mers has now killed 38 people. doctors say it's fatal in half of all the people diagnosed with it. health officials in the u.s. are hoping to contain the disease if there's an outbreak. breast cancer survivors may reduce the risk of recurrence
