>> live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good morning, thanks for joining us. a trial begin for two men in a rape case that rocked the bay area in 2009, the brutal attack on a 16-year-old after the richmond high school homecoming. our reporter is at the contra costa county courthouse in martinez. one trial, but two juries?

>> that is right. the trial has been 3 1/2 years in the making with a rare double jury here in contra costa county. this stems from the october 2009 gang rape of a 16-year-old richmond high school student after a homecoming dance, that lasted for hours as she was beaten, robbed and raped but the six men and teens arrested for the attack police estimate up to 20 others watched and did nothing. this afternoon, there will be an opening statement for 22 -year-old before one jury and as expected, tomorrow morning, a separate opening statement for the 20-year-old men who will be tried together after that with both juries present. some evidence will be specific to one defendant and inadmissible for the other, the trial is expected to go until mid-july at some point, the victim is expected to take the

stand. this is underway at 1:30 this afternoon and we will have a fill report tonight on abc7 news . >> developing news from oak, a man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for dilling a google job applicant three years ago. the 26-year-old was also sentenced in three additional charges of 25 years to life. a jury found huggins guilty of fatally shooting the 45-year-old man in oakland during a series of robberies. he lived in virginia and the victim was in the bay area for an interview with google and was killed after leaving a dental appointment at a friend's office. >> oakland police are looking for the gunman in an overnight shooting that left three injured in downtown oakland outside a nightclub near 13th before 1:00 o'clock this morning. police say an argument broke out inside the nightclub shortly before the shooting and the three people hit are expected to

survive. >> we have break news from sonoma county, sheriff deputies are right now searching for two people who failed to return from a canoe trip on the russian river. we are over the river right now as teams look for a man and a woman who went on a canoe trip there on sunday. investigators say the two are locals. they told friends they were going to paddle north on sunday. a worried friend call the sheriff this morning to say they had not returned and were not answering their cell phone. deputies found the car parked at the alexander valley campground five miles north of heals bug. >> developing news from sacramento this morning, state treasurer announced he is retiring from elective office next year. he helped several state elected office including 25 years in the legislature, and eight years as attorney general, and currently is everybodying his second four-year term as state treasurer. the first elected office was to

the san leandro school board in 1968 and recently has been dealing with controversy surrounding his wife and her extra marital affair and drug use. >> crews in san jose are chopping up massive oak tree that crashed down at willow street crushing cars and injuring several. it happened right where the 49ers organization was holding an event. we are on the scene with that story. frightening story. kira? >> frightening and witnesses say it is a miracle no one was injured worse or killed. they say that it was a frightening moment they heard it crack like lightning and a thousand times louder. crews are here chopping up the tree. look behind me, they have been busy at work for the last two or so hours. they are going to chop up the massive oakland and haul it

away. i would like to show you the video from saturday when as kristen mentioned there were 49er coaching staff and their wives and part of the tree came crashing down and they had a cook off and competing in lawn bowling. one coach was truck under a branch but a woman, part of the san jose lawn bowling club was trapped and her leg was injured. others came to her rescues. it was horrifying. it was a miracle no one was hurt or, worse, killed. neighbors here in willow glenn are sad to see the tree glow but they should know it will get new life. >> we will salvage two large slabs from the heritage oak tree and make two large wheels for an ox cart that was used back in the late 1700's by the spanish

in the valley. >> that ox court will be used in future pioneers of santa clara county museum and housed on lincoln avenue. it just so happens the building was donated by a family on friday county flee -- these days ago before the tree fell, turning lemons into lemonade to be used in a museum for years to come. you saw three cars smashed by the tree waiting to be assessed. by am told that the city tree folk will inspect the tree and see if it was infected and figure out why it split in two and came down crashing in such a dangerous way. >> in san francisco's marina

district a massive tree blocking a busy treat has been cleared but not before slowing the morning commute the take a look, the 35' tree came down after 4:00 a.m. crushing a parked lexus on lombard blocking several lanes of traffic. residents are glad no one was hurt and are not surprised to see a big try block, the street. >> it is the city. i've been here a while. you never know what you are going to find or what will happen. that is what is exciting. >> here is a look at the damage from sky 7 h.d., crews have since chopped up the tree, traffic is flowing once again, and crews say a few other tree like this have fallen across the city recently, and most likely because of the wind. >> happening now, build wear if you are going to cross the san rafael and richmond bridge with the decks being replaced. westbound traffic is shifted to the eastbound lane for a

>> happening now in southern california, the powerhouse fire continues to rage out of control. here are live pieforts of the firefighting aircraft. it is burning in frest 50 milesh of los angeles. you can see the charred brush and nearly 30,000 acres have burned sin the fire broke out on thursday and now it is 40 percent contained. officials say the fire has destroyed six homes and damaged at least 15 others. 3,000 people from the foothill communities of lake hughes and lake elizabeth remain under mandatory evacuation. >> one of three storm chasers killed in oklahoma was a teacher at a local community college, and were killed trying to document and research the storm. the mangled car was found

upright in a ditch on an oklahoma highway. 13 others were killed when a cluster of tornadoes swept through oklahoma. >> officials say the search is on hold for a teen swept over nevada fall in yosemite national park, crews are waiting until the water levels will subside. the 19-year-old from citrus height was swimming in the river on saturday afternoon, during a hike with his church group. he was caught in the country and went over the falls which is 600' high. rescue teams spent all of yesterday looking for him and dogs were brought in to try to track his scent. so far, there is no sign of him. a big retirement ceremony today for two of san francisco's finest, abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is on the scene of the party. >> they will be here in union square forever, magnum has been put to sleep, he was not here

>> covering fremont, palo alto, north bay and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> health officials have linked an outbreak of hepatitis a to frozen berry mix sold as costco. a contra costa county is among 30 people in five state whose have become sick. a frozen berry mix from oregon is actually to blame. a 62-year-old woman from eastern contra costa county is recovering after hospitalized last month. officials believe her illness was connected to the berries. costco has removed them and alerted consumers. officials say anyone who has eating them in 14 days should be

vaccinated. more information is on abc7news.com. >> ford is recalling 390,000 cars and s.u.v.'s in the united states because the fuel thanks can leak and cause fires affecting 2013 ford fusion, taurus, police utility, and police interceptor. the 2013 lincoln, as well. ford says customs can smell gas or see a leak but there have been no reports of fires or crashes. >> government lawyers are accusing apple of being part of a price fixing scheme to drive up the price of electronic books costing consumers hundreds millions. two sides squaring off in new york court today. the justice department sued apple last year claiming the late cofounder, steve jobs conspired with publishers to force amazon to raise prices. apple denies the alleges. >> we had a gray star this morning but mike proposal needs

the east bay shows baking all through the weekend with temperatures at five to eight degrees cooler than they were this time yesterday. you can see a lost mid-to-upper 70's through the san ramon valley and pleasanton hill is 79, and lafayette and san ramon, 76, and headed out highway four, antioch and brentwood are in the low-to-mid 80's where we will find the warmest weather. contrasted with the rip monday district, 59, bodega bay, 51, and a lot of throw mid 60's around the bay shore and 73 right new in cupertino. we will look at what is going on as far as the forecast highlights, it will be cooler the next couple of days and cloudy at night so drizzle is possible along the coast and maybe higher elevations an the bay if you drive into the cloud bank and warmer weekend ahead. we may be floating with 100 in the east bay valleys and a beautiful picture from emeryville back toward the marin head land to alcatraz and golden gate bridge and temperatures are two to five degrees cooler and inland, anywhere from 8 to 12 degrees cooler with the sea

breeze moving deeper into the inland valley. low-to-mid 70's in the south bay and gilroy is at 80 degrees today. san bruno, up toward san mateo, millbrae, the mid-60's. and low 70's for the rest of the peninsula and brisk along the coast with the afternoon sunshine, and only mid-to-upper 50's and low-to-mid 60's downtown and south san francisco and sausalito and low-to-mid extent through the north bay valley. the east bay shore, mid-to-upper 60's until castro valley, at 70, and mid-70's at san ramon to low-to-mid 80's in the east bay valley. you are close to your high with the sea breeze touching your neighborhood. the monterey cope shows the counterclockwise turn and that is the low bringing us our democrats cooler bringing the clouds back with low-to-mid 50's in most neighborhoods. we will jump ahead, to friday and saturday. you thought last week was hot? look at that, we are going to flirt with 100 on friday and saturday, enough to make your parents leave early and head
