have a great wednesday. this morning, bracing for the worst. >> water world with flood warnings in the center of the country as rivers burst over their banks. but that's not all. a tropical system is ready to drench the southeast and eastern seaboard. we have the very latest forecast. developing overnight, the baseball doping scandal that could lead to the suspension of superstar alex rodriguez and more than a dozen other players. we are live with new details. first lady's face-off going one-on-one with a heckler last night. how about this one? delivery by drone. an unmanned mission to deliver a piping hot pizza to your door. good morning. we begin with the growing threat for millions of people living along the mississippi river.

>> the fire chief in one missouri town says everyone is ready to go at a moment's notice if the levee that had been patched up fails to hold the river back. there's more rain and that's looming across much of the nation's midsection. in new mexico there's more brewing. new details on all of this, we are joined by accuweather meteorologist jim dickey. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john and diana. it is officially now atlantic hurricane season and we are tracking a system. it'll be slow to develop here. right now just a broad area of low pressure. looking at enhanced imagery and brighter colors showing deep convections, heavy thunderstorm activity, some heavy downpours. plenty of moisture for it to work with that will bring heavy rain regardless if it develops or not as it moves north and eastward slowly through the week. all through the week it'll be pouring down on florida, flooding a major concern. as far as today is concerned,

rain will be heaviest in south florida, really lake okeechobee down on southward. flooding ongoing along the mississippi river from all the storms we saw last week. rivers already cresting around st. louis but it'll be days before those rivers crest further southward. john and diana, back to you. >> thank you, jim. we'll track all of this later on "good morning america." our other major story this morning, major league baseball facing another black eye all because of players' apparent use of performance-enhancing drugs. >> the game has had plenty of experience with this issue in the past, but not quite like this. devin dwyer joins us with the details and he's live in washington this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john. good morning, diana. these are explosive allegations touching some of baseball's biggest stars including its highest paid player, alex rodriguez. >> the 2-0. there it is. number 600. alex rodriguez. >> reporter: it would be the largest doping scandal in american sports history, dozens of major league baseball players including superstars alex rodriguez and ryan braun could be suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs. >> i worry about baseball being affected as a game. the whole thing. >> reporter: sources tell espn's

program "outside the lines" that the league has obtained documents linking 30 players to miami's now shutter ed biogenesis clinic. the owner tony bosh has reportedly told investigators he provided performance-enhancing drugs and even injected the yankees' rodriguez himself. the allegations have stunned fans. >> i'm shocked to hear that. >> he should be a role model. >> hopefully it isn't true, but if it is, i hope he learned his lesson and move on. >> reporter: no comment from the league or the players on the latest doping investigation, but in the past many of those under scrutiny have denied ties to the clinic and illegal drugs. >> i truly believe in my heart and i would bet my life that this substance never entered my body at any point. >> reporter: sources tell espn baseball's commissioner is considering suspending some of the players for 100 games, more than half the regular season. the players can still appeal the decision in a process that could take several months. sources tell espn bosch will

meet with baseball officials friday to begin sharing information. the announcement of suspensions could come in the next two weeks. john? >> all right, devin dwyer in washington for us this morning, thank you. also this morning, showdown between first lady michelle obama and a heckler. a woman calling for more protection for gays tried to shout down mrs. obama at a dnc fund-raiser in washington last night, but the first lady did not back down. there were no cameras present but here's what she said, "one of the things i don't do well is this. she then actually left the podium and walked toward the heckler and she told her, "listen to me or take the mike but i'm leaving. you all decide. you have one choice." the crowd begged for the first lady to stay. that heckler was reportedly escorted out. >> all right, on capitol hill a highly charged hearing over the issue of sexual assault in the military. the nation's most senior officers facing off against female senators who want victims of abuse to report the crime to special military legal authorities instead of their commanding officer. but the officers want to police their own ranks. >> command authority is the most

critical mechanism for ensuring discipline, accountability and unit cohesion. >> not every single commander can distinguish between a slap on the ass and a rape. >> now, the pentagon estimated in a recent report that as many as 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year. we now have the most specific claim yet by a western nation about the use of chemical weapons in syria. both france and britain say they have confirmed that the nerve gas sarin has been used. france went even further saying the lethal gas was used multiple times and at least once by the syrian regime. president obama previously warned that chemical weapons could be a game changer when it comes to u.s. intervention. and this morning new jersey's high-profile governor is facing criticism for how he's handling a special election to fill frank lautenberg's senate seat. chris christie set it for october. democrats accuse him of squandering more than $12

million. that is the cost of a separate special election. and they see it as a political move calculated to keep christie's name at the top of the ballot in november. ohio state university president gordon gee is retiring after coming under fire for mocking notre dame and catholics and poking fun at the academic quality of other schools. gee said the controversy was only part of the reason that he decided to step down july 1st. mississippi's governor sparked a fiery national debate with his controversial comments about educational trouble in america. governor phil bryant was taking part in a panel discussion yesterday when he seemed to blame working moms for the declining reading proficiencies. >> how did america get so mode mode oak mediocre? >> i think parents became, both parents starting working and the mom is in the workplace, it's not a bad thing, i'm going to get this trouble. i can just see -- i can see the e-mails tomorrow. >> bryant later added that parents, both of them are pressured into families today

and he should have known that. his wife worked outside the home for nearly 40 years, even when their two children were grown up. we are learning much more about the destructive power of that deadly tornado last friday in oklahoma. the national weather service now says the tornado was the widest ever recorded, 2.6 miles. and not just long but powerful too. the twister was classified as a top of the scale ef-5 with winds of nearly 300 miles an hour. >> wow. all right. let's take a look at the weather across the nation. heavy rain and flooding in south florida, scattered thunderstorms across the deep south. some severe storms for the texas panhandle, oklahoma and arkansas. there will be showers in the upper midwest and ohio valley. it will be hot and dry in the southwest. >> 104 in phoenix. near 90 in sacramento and albuquerque. mostly 70s in the midwest and northeast. 80s from new orleans to the mid-atlantic. all right. still to come, police say it's a real-life version of the show "weeds." a suburban mom accused of fueling her lavish lifestyle by growing pot. uh-huh, but first a car company thumbing its nose at the u.s. government over a recall demand. why chrysler says its jeeps are

things are getting heated between the government and chrysler, which is refusing a request to recall thousands of jeeps. the government says the older suv's fuel tanks may rupture in rear end collisions causing deadly fires. chrysler says the government investigation is based on an incomplete analysis. >> we believe that chrysler has little time to think about this, see the public reaction, that they'll do the right thing and they'll recall the jeeps.

>> now, chrysler does have a track record when it comes to rebuffing recall efforts. the automaker challenged a similar request back in 2008 and eventually won it in a u.s. court of appeals. the dow's tuesday hot streak is over. the blue chip average had climbed 20 tuesdays in a row before slipping more than 76 points yesterday. concerns over changes in the fed support for the economy are weighing on stocks. but the dow is still up nearly 16% for the year. apple says it expects to go on a hiring spree at its headquarters in cupertino, california. the company is projecting it will bring on 7400 new workers between now and the completion of a new office complex in 2016. that's growth of nearly 50%. apple's projection came as it seeks building permission for a massive new complex. well, starting today, pizza hut is offering a large one topping pizza for just $5.55. the hook for the deal is it's pizza hut's 55th anniversary. analysts say it's all about getting the upper hand on rivals like little caesar's.

the country. thunderstorms drenching highways from texas and oklahoma into the central plains. also wet across much of the midwest, ohio valley and deep south. flooded roads in southern florida. and if you're flying, airport delays are possible in chicago, kansas city, miami, atlanta and memphis. all right, now to what authorities are calling a major marijuana bust right here in the new york city area. >> a mother of two is facing drug charges after agents seized more than 2,000 marijuana plants and large quantities of dried pot at an indoor facility. they also seized tens of thousands of dollars in cash. she lives in an upscale suburb but the feds say she paid for lavish lifestyle by selling millions of dollars of high grade pot. she could spend ten years in prison if found guilty. >> can you imagine the electric bills at that warehouse. my goodness gracious. the family of a dying pennsylvania girl is trying to cope with a devastating blow. the health and human services secretary is refusing to bend organ transplant rules. that could make a difference between life or death for the 10-year-old waiting for new lungs. more from abc's susan saulny. >> reporter: this is sarah murnaghan.

10 years old and gravely ill. she's on the adult waiting list for a lung transplant. she was the subject of a heated exchange between kathleen sebelius, the secretary of health and human services, and representative lou barletta, a republican who represents pennsylvania where sarah lives. >> madam secretary, i would urge you this week to allow that lung transplant to move forward. it simply takes your signature. >> reporter: sarah's family and supporters say the transplant rules are based on age instead of need. under u.s. guidelines, a lung from an adult donor would first be offered to grown-ups in sarah's region. secretary sebelius said she was full of compassion. >> i can't imagine anything more agonizing than what the murnaghans are going through. >> reporter: but that she could not make an exception for sarah. >> unfortunately, there are about 40 very seriously ill pennsylvanians over the age of 12 also waiting for a lung transplant and three other children in the philadelphia hospital at the same acuity rate

as sarah. >> reporter: far fewer pediatric lungs are donated each year than adult lungs. sarah's family added her name to the adult list to open up the donor pool as sarah took a serious turn for the worse last week. >> we're asking sarah like everybody 12 and over compete based on how sick she is. in a month sarah's not going to be alive. >> reporter: sarah's in stable condition but not very good condition at all, and her family continues to hope for some sort of last-minute mercy. john and diana. >> okay, susan, thank you. now, frightening video caught by a florida police officer's dash camera. he was driving down i-95 hit from the left by a driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel. yikes. frightening video. the officer suffered only bumps and bruises and was able to be out of the hospital within 24 hours. the other driver, amazingly, was unhurt, but he did get a ticket. all right, big day for super bowl champion baltimore ravens, they're going to the white house today to be congratulated by president obama. as for other teams trying to win

they got a call about a loud fight going on inside a boat. they were told there was yelling and it was physical. an officer got here at 8:00, officer says the suspect, the mannen at boat, point add weapon at the officer so the police officer said he shot the man in self-defense. they have not released the man's name. vallejo police officers say no officers were hurt. the officer is on paid leave while the d.a. and the vallejo police department can investigate. they will decide if he was justified in shooting the man. >> also from vallejo developing news of an early morning fire that protect out at a housing complex for low-income seniors and 1:00 o'clock this morning. re
