good afternoon, everybody, i'm larry beil. >> breaking news happening southern california. police say they have captured a shooting suspect after gunfire he erupted near santa monica city college. so far three people have died from a series of shootings that began around noon time. >> witnesses say a man shot two people inside of a home then set that home on fire

next shot at a woman in a car. at least three others have been wounded. students heard the gunfire. >> i heard two shots. i didn't think anything of them. i thought people were running i was still curious and didn't leave immediately of i got behind the bookstore. and heard someone discharging like a whole clip of ammunition. >> i heard a girl screaming i said he oh, my god, what's happening? everybody was saying get out of here, run, run. >> the shooting took place about three miles from where the president headlined a political fund-raiser. the secret service said it had no impact on the fund-raiser. the campus is under lock down. this is a helicopter view. you can see it's overcast there in the los angeles area today. but campus still locked down right now. >> they were searching for a

second shooter on a man dressed in black. mr. obama is now in palm springs arriving there for a meeting with china's leader and expected to hold a joint news conference. the white house says he will seek assurance he takes seriously of growing chinese cyber spying. >> discussion comes the same day the president addressed new revelations about the surdz programs. the president told reporters in san jose this morning that the u.s. must strike the right balance between security and civil liberties as the u.s. fights terrorism. >> it's important to recognize that you can't have 100% security and also, that have

100% privacy and zero inconvenience. we're going to have to make choices as a society. >> the president's comments follow revelations government has been involved in collecting phone use and internet use abroad. he made comments following a stay in the bay area where he attended two fund raisers for the democratic party. >> google saying it care btz security about the data and says, quote, we disclose in accordance with the law but google does not have a back door to the government to access private user data. >> and yahoo statement we do not provide the government with direct access to servers, systems or networks. >> a new development in the corruption scandal involving george shirakowa. >> the judge postponed sentencing because of the new charge against him.

vic? >> this afternoon to be sentenced as part of a plea bargain. but suddenly this case took a left turn, prosecutors filed a surprise new charge in a case officially closed three years ago. lawyers told the judge the sudden filing violated a plea deal that resolved all investigations against him. the judge pennypacker seemed stunned as well. >> he has been convicted of 12 criminal counts for lying on campaign finance reports and gambling with public funds. in march, pled guilty to five felony counts and seven misdemeanors.

prosecutors reached a plea deal and pledged never to run for office again, on wednesday, the district attorney filed a new and different, case against the disgraced former supervisor. now charged with crimes related to an illegal campaign mailer railed -- mailed out three years ago during a race for a former city council seat. prosecutors say a routine dna swab came back with a hit from the data banks. his dna found on a postage stamp on one campaign hit pieces aimed at discrediting him. prosecutors argued that the new charge was never discussed as part of the plea agreement and they that we westbound rights to vile separately. >> no one thinking about this case z we're surprised as anyone when the data base hit

from the state came back. >> defense lawyers asked a juk judge to dismiss this case and if not, to postpone everything because lawyers and judge you may have to recuse themselves because they were all part of the negotiations for the plea deal which promised immunity in other investigations. the fbi hopes someone recognizing one of three robbers captured by surveillance cameras during a series of bank robberies. agents say the trio pulled three takeover robberies since monday. the latest took place yesterday on terrible street in san francisco sunset district. thieves hit two other banks on monday. investigators believe the same men robbed another bafrk in san francisco in april. we'll bring reactions from the fbi coming up on abc 7 news at

5:00. >> the serial killer known as the night stalker died in marin general hospital this morning at age 53. >> richard ramirez had been on death row, well known to police here in the bay area especially in san francisco. >> abc 7 news has our story. he was known as the night stalker. to many, evil serial killer who showed no remorse and mercy n 1989 convicted in southern california of 13 murders and other vicious crimes known for sexual assaulting and mutilating victims. and fr the satanic symbols left behind. but he's expected of committing three murders here in the bay area. >> if you saw him, just saw him, you knew there is something wrong. >> san francisco police chief was an officer in the mid 19 80s when a detective made a

link. the suspect was still at large. >> people are told keep your windows locked if you have a dog put the dog out. you know? it was an anxious time here in san francisco hoo in 2009 with ramirez on death row, police matched killer dna with that at the scene where a 9-year-old girl was killed in a tender loin hotel in 1984. >> he contacted me and wanted to see me. i specialize in death penalty investigation. >> the defense attorney had a relationship with ramirez in early 1990s and advised him several years he and i got along well. he was a very disturbed human being and had difficulty controlling himself n dealing with me, he was very nice. >> brian ended up not taking the appeal because the attorney was too busy with

frightening moments this morning in a san francisco muni street. four people injured when a cable snapped knocking over a stop sign. witnesses say the cable disconnected and slammed the sign so hard it bent the pole over and then, struck two people. they fell on two other people. >> it was just a really loud crashing sound and then, you heard children crying so it's pretty scary. >> two of the injuredded are children on a class field trip. one suffered cuts in the arm. all injuries considered minor. >> business news walmart plan tykes on amazon and google and

aren't limited to atf, los angeles police department and an array of other agencies. my apologies to those agencies i don't name just for the sake of time at this point. i want ato take a moment to ensure the community audience understands this is not a college or school shooting rather a series of shooting that's culminated with an incident that occurred at santa monica college. today at 11:52 a.m. the police department received a call of shots fired in the 2000 block of york shir in the eastern end of city of santa monica. responding officers encountered a structure fire. the fifr fire department responded to cut that -- put that out. we received information about a possible car jacking. and receiving calls regarding

random shootings possibly involving an automatic firearm of some type later found to be in the city. the random encounters that the suspect had as he moved west culminated with a series of shootings. another occurred in area of cloverfield and pico then a shooting in area of 20th and pearl which is immediately adjacent to santa monica college chbl the suspect shot at a passenger skprek a police vehicle. not long thereafter seen from responding officers from the police department. there was an exchange of gunfire at the time. the suspect attempted to evade the officers. as he ran on to the campus additional shots were exchanged no. officers were injured at this time. the suspect headed towards the

library. shot at women on camp jus just before entering. accosted a number of patrons inside of the library and attempted to shoot at them. those individuals were able to find safety in a safe location however he continued to shoot at them. the officers directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene. information indicates half a dozen victims were shot and killed and i've been informed another victim died at the hospital. i have to say again this investigation is in it's infancy. search being handled by 11 multi disciplinary teams that are attempting to secure the front of santa monica college. the suspect is yet to be

identified buds bu described as being male white wearing all black clothing and what appears to be a ballistic vest we have a subject of interest in custody so we're not convinced the suspect when was killed operated in a solo capacity. we're not identifying victims. i want to say the shooting insin dents occurred within two area schools the schools locked down for safety of students and faculty. parents seeking to reunite with students are to go to 1600 block of 16th street to santa monica unify school district administration officers. i say that at this point we know that the school have been released and in case anyone did not hear that is where

the spike in violent crime, more boots on the ground is another this, is not the first time opd attempted area command. but this time chief said it will be different they're making the area smaller, sif districts swril a commander. a target this weekend will be side shows ask a spike in gun violence. opd will have members of the crime reduction teams covering areas known to be a problem in the past. we're rolling out extra units and have a partnership with the patrol. and more police presence is a major key. >> the chief was quick to point out they will not be taking officers from other
