good evening. let's get right to some breaking news. the breaking news from treasure island tonight where it is pitch black. all the power on the island is out. it happened just about an hour and a half ago. the island is serviced by the san francisco public utilities commission. not pg&e. officials tell us they don't know what happened or how long it will take to fix the problem. we have our live picture from treasure island right now where you can see it is as black as night with the exception of some taillights and headlights from cars going by. we do expect to have an update soon, so we'll bring you the new

information as soon as we have it. a family in oakland is looking for somewhere else to sleep tonight after a fire damaged their home. that fire didn't start at the house. it was pushed there by strong wind. abc 7 news is live near where this all began. >> reporter: firefighters on scene after the fire was out. that red building is where it all started. the fire got whipped up by afternoon winds. a towering palm tree on fire and people running out of the backyard to get away from hot ashes being whipped up by the wind. this family ran for safety. >> we started hearing popping noises and then the palm tree caught on fire and it just went up and that's when we started to run away. >> reporter: a couple of family members got burned by the flying embers. they were having a birthday

party when they noticed the fire in the building that abuts their yard. their neighbor also heard a commotion and quickly tried spraying down his house. >> the wind was so there was smoke everywhere along with the ashes. some of the ashes were getting on other properties like mine. >> reporter: oakland crews tried to get a handle on the main fire at what used to be a school. fires started on two nearby homes so trucks were sent out on patrol in an effort to stay ahead of any other potential fires. >> we have two engines driving around the immediate area making sure no other embers are flying so there is no potential for any more structure fires in this area. >> reporter: after a couple of hours, crews got a handle on all three fires and residents returned to their home. this family aturned to their abandoned backyard party and found a house untouched by the flames. but their neighbors returned to the house with a burned roof. they'll have to stay somewhere

else tonight. and the good news is no one was seriously injured and that includes fire teams that had to deal with the pretty persistent fire this afternoon. as for those -- the residents of that home that was damaged, they're going to be spending this evening with family elsewhere. reporting live in oakland, sergio quintana. strong wind gusts appear to be blame for knocking down a tree on this cars in san francisco. tree branches damaged at least one car on cell street around webster street at 4:00 this afternoon. luckily no one was hurt. the mishap delayed drivers for a short time. the branch fell around the same time that wind warning were in effect. the wind is really whipping up tonight in the bay area. in sausalito, high winds damaged a power pole and several transformers, causing outages to several homes. this is in the area of johnson

street, napa street in caledonia. pg & e tells us all power will be restored by 7:00 tomorrow morning. let's get details on the big weather changes from. the fog is already starting to move inland a bit. this is definitely going to be what cools us all down tomorrow. here is a look at some of the highs for today, man, it was warm to hot, livermore, a new record of 107. antioch reached 107. 106 in fairfield. 90 in santa rosa. and 62 in san francisco. we do have a threat of some isolated dry thunderstorms, so our fire weather watch has been issued throughout much of the day on sunday. north bay, east bay, as well as the diablo range as i mentioned, those dry lightning strikes a

possibility and also some gusty winds there as well. cooldown tomorrow, by how much, we'll look at my forecast coming up. >> that will feel good. thank you, lee. today's hot weather and blazing sunshine made it dangerous for high school graduates and guests in eastern contra costa county. temperatures reached the mid-80s during ceremonies at heritage and freedom high schools. at least two dozen people needed medical attention after getting sick during the two ceremonies. one woman prepared for the heat, but began feeling sick after watching her grandson graduate. >> i knew it was going to be hot. and uncomfortable. we were sitting where there was a breeze, no shade, but a breeze. and i thought, it will be fine. we'll drink plenty of water, we'll be fine. >> had the center ready, services ready, like, water. >> the local fire chief says medical teams followed special disaster plans when they treated the large groups of patients at both schools.

heat ruined the day at high school graduation in the sierra foothills. dell oreo high canceled today's ceremonies after several people came down with heat exhaustion minutes after the festivities began. 15 people went to the hospital including two in critical condition. del oro high has a synthetic turf football field. that raised the temperature between 15 and 20 degrees. grads will be able to pick up their diplomas at the school on monday. a vallejo family torn apart by violence tonight. police confirm a man shot and killed his wife and then police shot and killed that man. it is the second officer-involved shooting in the city in four days. abc 7 news reporter lisa mangalisen has more. >> reporter: i'm told the officer is on administrative leave. that is until the shooting is investigated. sadness and pain fill the eyes

of those who loved nadia. police state 49-year-old mother of four was shot and killed today by her husband, muhammad. >> he loves her, she loves him. >> reporter: just before 1:30, things suddenly turned violent outside cybercomputers, the store the couple owned together on tennessee street. this woman had just left the store an hour before. she said the two had had a small argument, but thought nothing of it. >> they had a small problem. an argument. she never -- if i knew they had a gun, i maybe tell her, come to me. >> reporter: police say she ran out the back door and down this alley. he chased her and shot her. two of the couple's children were in the store at the time. a police officer arrived two minutes after the shooting. >> so the officer sees the suspect hiding behind the car, confronts him, the suspect levels a firearm at the officer

and the officer fires his own service weapon at the suspect. >> reporter: he was rushed to kyzer vallejo. he died a short time later. this marks the second fatal officer-involved shooting in vallejo in four days. on tuesday, a man was shot and killed after he pointed a flare gun that had been modified into a shotgun at police. the selanno county da and internal fairs are investigating both of these shootings. in vallejo, lisa amin gulezian. in an earlier shooting, investigators scoured downtown windsor for evidence after police shot and killed the man. they killed the man suspected of stabbing a woman. >> there was a lot of commotion and i saw a man walking away from starbucks, an older man. he might have been in his late 50s, early 60s. and i saw him slip something under his shirt and a young boy came after him, and said, dad,

why did you do that? >> man appeared to be headed toward the police station. officers say they shot him after he pulled out a knife and lunged at them. the stabbing victim is in serious condition. sonoma county district attorney is investigating the shooting. oakland police tonight are trying new tactics in an effort to discourage side shows and gun violence. officers are using special units to focus on the city's crime hot spots and dividing oakland into smaller policeable districts. the city has approved overtime for officers in order to show an increased presence and the chp is helping out by concentrating on preventing side shows which have increased in size and frequency. authorities are also concerned the warm weather will lead to more people being outside, and being lured into making trouble. still to come on abc 7 news at 11:00, the underground problem that caused a big scare on a san francisco street.

tonight. firefighters stood by outside -- they stood outside the central ymca until crews arrived on scene. there were no reports of any injuries. abc 7 news is waiting for pg & e to tell us what caused this evening's explosion. a family on the peninsula needs your help to find an 89-year-old woman who vanished after arriving from mexico. margarita lopez ramos suffered from dementia. she's also hard of hearing. airport workers say they last saw her in the customs area inside sfo's international terminal yesterday morning. she had disappeared by the time her family came to take her home to redwood city. if you've seen lopez ramos, you are asked to call the san mateo county sheriff's office. in this graduation season, words of wisdom from facebook's sheryl sandberg. her blockbuster book "lean in" is a rallying cry for america's working women, a message made more compelling.

as we head into your sunday afternoon. right now we have 58 in san francisco. mountain view, 66. 55 half moon bay. this is how it looks right now. the golden gate bridge, that fog starting to move in, reduce d visibility. livermore, 69, quite mild inland. and los gatos, 66 degrees. here is a look at our forecast highlights. low clouds, fog, maybe a little mist and drizzle returns to the coast. it will push in a little further inland tonight. get ready for cooler day tomorrow. slight chance of an isolated thunderstorm. higher elevations. and then it looks like this cooling trend will be with us for at least the next several days. we're keeping it mild inland with antioch, 66 degrees. 50s elsewhere as the fog, strong on shore wind flow continues to increase overnight tonight. the setup has been high pressure the past couple of days, bringing us the heat.

well, it is going to be replaced, pushed to the south. low pressure will take its place. counterclockwise spins, all the low clouds and fog near the coast will just migrate north towards the bay area. we get a strong westerly wind and that's going to mean temperatures will drop. i mean, will really drop by tomorrow afternoon. in fact, livermore today, 107. tomorrow, only 82. and then on monday, you're going to only going to manage the mid-70s. so, yes, a steep drop for at least the next couple of days. 11:00 tonight, you can see our forecast model right on with the fog developing right near the coast. by 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 tomorrow morning, much of the low cloudiness and fog pushed inland and will sit there until about lunch time. and then start to peel back to just the coast. we're still going to have strong westerly winds. even though you see lots of sunshine towards the east bay, temperatures will come down as much as 20 degrees in some

an elementary school sponsored a different kind of gun buyback program in hayward today. youngsters filled a storage bin with toy guns. they each received a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of four bicycles. the principal of stroe bridge elementary school came up with the idea because he believes kids who play with toy guns may

not take real ones seriously. a hayward police officer talked with the kids about what they should do if they ever fiendnd real gun on the streets. make-a-wish greater bay area is committed to enriching the lives of children. as abc 7 news anchor amman dates tells us, there is a simple way to help the organization make these kids' dreams come true. >> reporter: alex and jordan enjoy playing in the yard like all little boys do. but their living with a life long illness. boys, 9 and 5. >> their immune system works at 30% or 40% of what our immune system works at. they're not protected against getting common illnesses like colds, flus, and it takes them longer to bounce back from having it. >> reporter: mom tracy gives the boys life saving transfusions.

one of the toughest things to do in professional sports is change position. it is right when you have success in the situation, but josh donaldson took home a challenge and he's now an all-star candidate. we sat down with josh recently and here's his story. >> hit three fly balls to right field. that's it, well down the line. it is good. >> josh donaldson is living the dream. he started playing baseball at 6 and knew it was what he wanted to do. he played all three sports in

high school, but narrowed it down it baseball for college. >> i looked at my family, and stuff like that and i realized i wouldn't be able to make it as a football guy. baseball was my best shot. >> he was drafted by the cubs in 2007 after three years at auburn as a third baseman and traded to the a's in 2008. josh labored in the minors as a catcher and scott sizemore blew out his knee at the start of spring training and josh took over. he struggled early on, calling it the worst year of his life. but then something clicked. >> i started -- i got on a roll and i think that -- it just allowed me to relax and allow some of the potential to come out. >> that potential has exploded this season as josh is an all-star candidate. he leads the a's in batting average, hits, rbi, second in home runs and has only five errors in the field. but josh is two humble to think about being an all-star.
