diana perez. >> and i'm john muller. we begin with the very latest details on the whistle-blower who allegedly leaked top secret documents about the government's sweeping surveillance program. >> he's a 29-year-old high school dropout, who claims to have worked for the nation's two top spy agencies. let's get right to abc's devin dwyer in washington with more. devin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, tai. good morning, john. snowden is a wanted man, which makes his testimony incredibly high stakes. he said he always intended to come forward even if it means he'll never see his home or family ever again. >> that awareness of wrongdoing sort of builds up, and you feel compelled to talk about it. >> reporter: from his hong kong hotel room, the leaker is unmasked. edward snowden, the man behind one of the largest national security leaks in recent american history, spoke to glenn greenwald and laura portras of "the guardian" newspaper. >> even if you're not doing anything wrong, you're being watched and recorded. >> reporter: the former cia technician, snowden worked as a civilian contractor for the

national security agency in hawaii. his neighbors described him as a very private, even secretive person who evaded conversation. >> if he did say more than hi or whatever, even with say that, it was either rush to the car or rush inside. >> reporter: in just three months on the job, snowden said he became horrified by top secret government efforts to collect phone records of every american and gather data from major u.s. internet companies, then he decided to leak. >> these things need to be determined by the public, not by somebody who was simply hired by the government. >> reporter: government officials say snowden was reckless and dangerous. the justice department has launched a criminal investigation. >> it's dangerous for national security, and it violates the oath of which that person took. i absolutely think they should be prosecuted. >> reporter: no comment from the cia, but snowden believes they could soon track him down. >> if they want to get you, they'll get you in time. that's a fear i'll live under for the rest of my life however long that happens to be. >> reporter: now, snowden told "the guardian" he may try to seek asylum in iceland. meanwhile, the top u.s. intelligence officials says the administration is revealing the damage that's been done from snowden's leaks.

john and tai. >> hey, devin, anyone coming to snowden's defense? >> reporter: well, he actually have -- snowden does have a group of supporters that have come forward and launched a petition, citizen petition on the white house website calling him a national hero asking for a pardon from president obama. it has some 7,000 signatures of the 100,000 required to get an official response. still far short from that mark, but a pardon from president obama highly unlikely. john and tai. >> all right, devin dwyer in washington. thank you very much. the story breaking overnight from afghanistan's capital, security forces directed fire at a couple of buildings under construction near the city's airport. >> it was from there the taliban insurgents were firing towards nato's headquarters at the airport. at least seven insurgents were killed in the hours-long gun battle. two afghan civilians were injured. also developing this morning, a rare sign of good will between north and south korea. after 17 hours of negotiations, leaders from both sides have agreed on face-to-face talks beginning wednesday. the hope is that the sit-downs will ease tensions after recent

threats of nuclear war from the north and vows of counterstrikes from the south. south africa praying this morning for its ailing former leader nelson mandela. we just received a new update on his health. he remains in serious but stable condition as he has since saturday. abc's brandi hitt is in pretoria. >> reporter: nelson mandela's family drove past reporters at the hospital where the 94-year-old former president has spent the last two days battling a reoccurring lung infection. >> we are requesting the world to be with us. >> reporter: newspaper headlines describe mandela's fight for his life. ♪ and a nation joined in prayer with families throughout south africa attending church services this sunday putting his fate in god's hands. >> i don't know, but god knows. >> reporter: mandela has been hospitalized four times in the last six months and has always

battled back, but this video captured in april shows a frail civil rights icon unresponsive leading many to acknowledge the inevitable for the first time publicly. even mandela's longtime friends are now speaking openly saying it's time to let him go. we're told mandela's wife, graca machel, continues to remain by his side, and while his family members are optimistic about his recovery, they're also asking for their privacy. brandi hitt, abc news, pretoria, south africa. a fifth person has died as a result of that shooting rampage on a southern california college campus. marcella franco was a student at santa monica college where her father, carlos, was a longtime groundskeeper. he was also killed. the pair had gone to the campus so that marcella could buy textbooks for the summer term. >> they were very close. they loved each other. she was a daddy's girl. so the blessing is that they went together.

>> reporter: police say the gunman, 23-year-old john zawahri, killed his father and older brother at their home friday, then he took his rampage to the streets and the college campus. he was killed by police. a follow-up on last week's deadly building collapse in philadelphia. a heavy equipment operator now in custody. he was arrested over the weekend. he is charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter, one for each of the victims killed in the incident. tests show the 42-year-old man was high on marijuana while operating his machine. he's been arrested at least 11 times in the past. engineers are running tests on a restaurant near tampa, florida, to see if it may be over a sinkhole. the place is very near where a sinkhole opened up under a home in february and killed a man as he slept. a more likely cause for the cracks is the heavy rains, though, from tropical storm andrea. all right. more wet weather on the way for florida, though not as heavy as before. the northeast is going to be pounded by showers and thunderstorms just about all day today. expect those downpours to produce some flooding.

that western heat wave, that will expand to include parts of the rockies and the plains where you can expect some stifling record-breaking heat. >> how about 102 in denver or nearly 100 in albuquerque and salt lake city. but much cooler on the west coast, 70s instead of triple digits. all right. coming up, that low budget movie that scored big at the box office. plus, a big revamp could be in the works for apple, the sweeping changes the company will announce today. and it was a history-making weekend at the french open, but the biggest fireworks happened off the court.

welcome back. trading in asia is any indication wall street could be in for a big day today. japan's nikkei soared nearly 5%. analysts say that was a reaction to friday's jobs report in the u.s. and a promise made by japan's prime minister. he says new tax cuts are on the way. apple fans are hoping to be wowed by the tech giant this week. developers conference opens this morning. always a showcase for their latest creations. this year a new music streaming service could be unveiled and new operating systems that make macs look more like ipads and iphones. google is continuing its spending spree and close to a deal to bay waves for more than a billion dollars. it lets drivers report traffic jams and avoid trouble spots. novel approach to keeping employees happy. more and more companies are allowing workers to buy more vacation time. upcoming survey finds 5% of firms let employees purchase more days off through a payroll deduction. another 7% allow workers to donate vacation time to a

general pool so it can be used by others. there's something of a surprise this weekend at the box office. the suspension thriller "the purge" starring ethan hawke came out on top. estimates offered by its studio. "the purge" brought in over $36 million. "fast and furious 6" was second and nou n"now you see me" finisn third place. jared lost 245 pounds by changing what he ate. that was the beginning of the subway diet and jared has managed to mostly keep it off. started appearing in commercials in 2000 and made 300 of them. subway sales took off during those 15 years. he's apparently worth 15 million bucks these days. >> nice prize. losing all that weight. did it almost happen again? a limousine catches fire with ten elderly women inside. also ahead, game two of the nba finals turned into a bit of a blowout. we'll have the details coming up. we had never used a contractor before

the sound of an 11-story building on governor's island in new york harbor as it was imploded early yesterday. the building had housed coast guard personnel, but it's been unoccupied since the mid '90s. once the debris is cleared up, a 30-acre park will be built on the site. >> must have been great being on the staten island ferry when that thing went down. what a view. road conditions, sloppy and wet around washington, d.c. the rest of the east coast will also be slow going. >> and if you're flying, airport delays are possible mostly in the east. washington, d.c., philadelphia, new york city, boston, charlotte and atlanta. just hours from now jury selection will begin in the high-profile trial of neighborhood volunteer watch george zimmerman. >> the defense case is

centered around florida's controversy stand your ground law. here with a preview is abc's marci gonzalez. >> reporter: from a pool of 500 potential jurors, it will come down to 6. today the process begins at the seminole county courthouse in central florida. george zimmerman charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin in february of last year. martin had just left this convenience store and was walking in a residential community in sanford, florida. zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, called police reporting martin as a suspicious person. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> okay. we don't need you to do that. >> okay. >> reporter: the prosecution will try to prove that zimmerman instigated the confrontation that followed. the defense, meanwhile, maintains zimmerman had the injuries to prove he was attacked and fired the fatal shot in self-defense. >> okay, what is your -- >> reporter: one of the key pieces of evidence, the screaming heard in 911 calls made by neighbors just before

the unarmed teen was killed. it's unclear if that's the voice of zimmerman or martin. >> so you think he's yelling help? >> yes. >> reporter: a judge has yet to decide if voice recognition experts will be allowed to weigh in in the trial. now, courthouse security is prepared for protesters outside following rallies and outrage across the country fueled by the heated debate over whether this is a case of self-defense or of racial profiling. marci gonzalez, abc news, daytona beach, florida. a highly respected breast cancer doctor is accused of plotting to poison another doctor who happens to be a former lover. police say the houston oncologist spiked some coffee with a toxic chemical found in antifreeze. her then lover drank it and complained it tasted unusually sweet. it wasn't long before he was being rushed to the e.r. with slurred speech and poor balance. the bizarre disappearance of a respected navy officer in jacksonville has family, friends

and police baffled. local navy families are helping pass out posters looking for leads on chief petty officer williams. williams vanished may 28th from a mall parking lot. she says she walked away to cool down, but when she came back, he was gone. police say that so far there's no foul play suspected. a lucky escape for a group of women headed to a birthday party near san francisco where their limo caught fire. the ten ladies, mostly in their 90s, were in that car when the flames broke out, but they made it out okay. no word what started it. last month five nurses were killed in a nearby san mateo fire involving a limousine. the great whites are returning to cape cod and forced already a major beach to close. the popular nauset beach was closed sunday when a dorsal fin was spotted 150 yards offshore. the shark was about 13 feet long. last year a man was bitten by a great white at another local beach.
