good tuesday morning, everyone. we begin with that breaking news overnight, about the nsa leaks. a reporter who worked with whistle-blower edward snowden, says more significant revelations will soon be made. >> this comes as the justice department prepares to charge snowden in connection with the case. >> with late-breaking developments, we're now joined by abc's devin dwyer in washington. good morning, devin. >> reporter: good morning, john and diana. no one knows where snowden is headed next. but at this hour, there's an urgent manhunt under way to find him. this morning, edward snowden is a hunted man, on the run from his hong kong hideout, pursued by an army of federal agents. he's believed to be carrying more top-secret government documents to be dropped as bombshells. >> we're going to have a lot more significant revelations that have not yet been heard. >> reporter: snowden has already exposed two, sweeping u.s. surveillance programs, an effort he says to help the american people protect their privacy.

>> the nsa specifically targets the communications of everyone. it ingests them by default. >> reporter: a new pew poll finds the majority of americans, 56%, say the nsa activities are acceptable to prevent terrorist attacks. top intelligence officials say the programs will continue. house speaker john boehner condemned snowden's leak in an exclusive interview with "good morning america's" george stephanopoulos. >> he's a traitor. these are important national security programs to help keep americans safe. and give us tools to fight the terrorist threat that we face. >> reporter: snowden's supporters have begun raising money for his legal defense. more than 39,000 have signed a petition on the white house website demanding a presidential pardon. daniel ellsberg, who leaked the pentagon papers in 1971, called snowden a national hero. >> he gives me hope that we may actually regain our bill of rights. >> reporter: debate over the nsa program today turns to capitol hill. nsa officials will brief all

members of the u.s. house on the secret operations that congress has previously approved. john and diana? >> devin dwyer in washington. thank you for that. another big story overnight, several southern states cleaning up after taking a pounding from another round of wild weather that sent people running for cover. >> seven tornadoes touched down yesterday, swooping down from kentucky eastward, including nere in the middle of baltimore. l y tunnel. the maryland storms also scattered debris across the town of woodbine, toppling trees, damaging cars and even sending lawn furniture flying. and they took an even bigger hit in southern kentucky where a tornado raked over a half-dozen homes about 40 miles north of nashville. as the winds picked up, two elderly women rode out the storm, huddled in a bathtub. now, their house did not fair very well at all. but they survived with minor injuries. and this morning, we're reminded that tornado season is far from over. a major inconvenience for passengers overnight. a southwest flight from los angeles to texas, diverted to

phoenix after a telephone bomb threat. the jet landed safely at sky harbor airport. it was sent to an isolated part of the airport. the passengers taken off the plane. and after a thorough search, no explosives were found. more explosive clashes are erupting across turkey this morning, a day before the prime minister is scheduled to meet with anti-government protesters. demonstrators set barricades on fire in istanbul. and riot police fired tear gas, water canons and rubber bullets. protesters are calling for the prime minister to step down after a violent police crackdown on a peaceful sit-in. and nelson mandela remains in serious but stable condition at a hospital in south africa. today is his fourth day of receiving treatment for a recuring lung infection. mandela's former wife and their daughter were seen at the hospital in pretoria yesterday. south africa's president is asking for his citizens to pray for mandela's recovery. now, to the racially-charged murder trial of george zimmerman. 16 months after he shot and killed trayvon martin and set off protests across the country,

zimmerman returns to a florida courtroom today, as hundreds of potential jurors wait to be questioned. here's abc's marci gonzalez. >> the record will reflect the presence of mr. zimmerman. >> reporter: george zimmerman, the man accused of killing an unarmed teenager in florida, in the courtroom as attorneys began trying to narrow a jury pool of about 500 people down to the 6 who will decide zimmerman's fate. >> could you estimate how many times you may have heard or read or talked about the case? >> reporter: the attorneys have questioned four potential jurors so far, focusing on what they may have already heard about that february night, that zimmerman says he shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin in self-defense. zimmerman's wife and brother in court here in sanford, florida, as he faces a second-degree murder charge. >> i believe it's an improper charge altogether. i wish they would just withdraw it. >> reporter: to many in this polarized central florida city, this is a case about race. not just for those who believe martin was targeted because he was black. but analysts say, in part, for

the attorneys trying to narrow 500 potential jurors down to the 6 who will decide zimmerman's fate. the emotion, understatedly present from the handful of protesters gathered outside. to the martin family, stone-faced in the courtroom, as this trial begins. >> we are relieved that the start of the trial is here with the jury selection, as we seek justice for our son, trayvon. and we also seek a fair and impartial trial. >> reporter: and the trial resumes at 9:00 this morning. jury selection is expected to last anywhere between one and three weeks. john and diana? >> all right, marci, thank you. hundreds of people have gathered at santa monica college to remember those killed in last week's shooting rampage. the victims will also be mourned during a moment of silence during the graduation ceremonies. the suspected gunman klehis father and brother before shooting three people to death on campus. and it's a major milestone for one of the military's most

apple has just unveiled its biggest software update since the debut of the original iphone. and it is chock full of new features. it's a complete overhaul for the iphone and the ipad, with a redesign control center that allows you to swipe up or to the left. and it features multitasking, letting you preview apps by clicking on the home button. abc's joanna sterns got a firsthand look. >> it's a clean look to the operating system.

and it's different for people who got used to a look and feel. >> siri gets a brand-new voice. and she can send tweets. but iphone lovers will have to be patient. ios 7 is not due out until the fall. analysis about the u.s. economy was met with something of a yawn on wall the standard & poor's rating agency credited the strength of the economy, as it raised the outlook for the government's debt rating. all of the stock averages barely moved on monday. government consumer watchdog group is criticizing the nation's banks on their overdraft policies. the consumer financial protection bureau says it's hard for consumers to anticipate and avoid overdraft charges which vary widely. some customers paid 298 bucks annually, while others paid less than half that. a shocker from the company in the see-through yoga parents that embarrassed people across the country. she plans to leave lieu lieu

the western great lakes. >> and if you're flying, airport delays are expected in new york city, boston and chicago. all right. back to the news, now. a major reversal for the obama administration. >> girls of any age may soon be able to buy the morning-after pill without a prescription. the justice department has decided to stop fighting a judge's ruling in the long-running case. women's rights advocates applaud the move, saying it's a step forward in reproductive justice. others argue that it takes away parental rights. the fbi helping investigate a threat that put schools in newtown, connecticut, on what's called modified lockdown. police and parents rushing to schools across the district yesterday after a threat was phoned in to a school just two miles from the site of last december's massacre. the lockdown ended with yesterday's dismissal. security is being beefed up today. a houston woman accused of fatally stabbing her boyfriend with a stiletto heel is now claiming self-defense. ana trujillo is due in court today to be formally charged.

>> abc7 news starts with breakings. >> 4:28. >> our breaking us is in san francisco where firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire in the bayview district this morning. look at this video that started at 2:30 on hudson avenue. the fire may have started in a vacant building and spread to nearby homes and cars. the fire is out but firefighters are on the scene mopping up and also keeping an eye out for hotspots. we got word that a firefighter had to be taken to san francisco general hospital and a firefighter possibly hurt. we are working together to get more information on the fire with more for you later in the newscast. >> at 4:28 we will check the weather.
