breaking overnight, a tinderbox in colorado. >> massive homes up in flames. several wildfires burning out of control this morning. thousands of people forced to evacuate. even animals in harm's way. today's weather could make things worse. the fbi launches a coast-to-coast investigation into bomb threats. airports and a major college affected. callers claiming to be taliban. a car jumps a curb. a mother and her baby right in the car's path. it is a happy morning for both of them. basketball blowout. an unexpected outcome in the nba finals. a seesaw for fans, with one big man taking the blame. and good morning. we begin with that destructive wildfire engulfing million-dollar homes in the

colorado rockies. >> as many as 60 homes have been damaged or burned to the ground. thousands of families have been forced to flee. and that's just one of four, big fires, blazing across the state. 150 firefighters are on the ground near colorado springs. and so is abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: this morning, wildfires are blowing up all over colorado. the worst in the black forest area north of colorado springs, growing to about 8,000 acres in a matter of hours. as many as 60 structures have been damaged or destroyed. the blaze is out of control. police helping thousands of people to get out. >> our mandatory evacuation area is about 24,000 acres. right now, we're estimating the fire to have consumed somewhere between 7,500 and 8,000 acres. it's affected a population of 5,469.

>> they had the road blocked off. they wouldn't let us in. and finally, i persuaded him to let me go and get our dogs. >> reporter: dry, windy conditions and record-hot triple-digit temperatures. denver broke a record. tuesday's 100-degree high, the earliest on record. >> the fire is still pretty well scattered. it's not just one wall of fire, like this community has seen. >> reporter: two more colorado fires are burning out of control. one forced evacuations of the scenic royal gorge park near canyon city. at least three structures burned there. and another blaze is burning out of control in rocky mountain national park. large plumes of smoke can be seen for miles, as firefighters dig in for a long, hard fight. clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> so far, no reports of injuries opinion the fire is 0% contained. another hot, dry day is on tap. breaking right now, another contentious day across turkey as violent clashes with anti-government protesters

continues to escalate. riot police are firing more tear gas, rubber bullets and water canons. demonstrators were hurling firebombs and stones. as they call for the prime minister to step down. he has agreed to meet with them today. turkey, a vital american ally in the region. back here at home, federal agents are racing to find out if a series of phoned-in threats are linked. bomb threats shut down the richmond, virginia, airport for more than three hours yesterday. the caller claimed to be with the taliban. thousands were evacuated at princeton university after a similar threat. on monday, a southwest airlines jet was forced to make an emergency landing, after someone claiming to be with the taliban said there was a bomb onboard. a major milestone for efforts to reform the nation's immigration laws. the senate has allowed debate to begin. but republicans are signaling they expect to make major changes. let's get the very latest from devin dwyer in washington for us this morning. good morning, devin. >> reporter: good morning, diana. good morning, john.

it was a big step forward for immigration reform. but there's no guarantees about the future of this closely-watched bill. a historic debate to overhaul immigration. >> times change. and the immigration system has to change with those times. >> reporter: now building momentum in the senate for a sweeping bipartisan plan. for the first time ever, even in spanish. the bill would offer a path to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants, provide them immediate legal status, but ban them from government social programs while they wait at least 13 years to apply. >> it's no cakewalk. but it's the only way we can make sure that everyone who is here is playing by the same rules as ordinary families. >> reporter: the plan expands visas for low skilled workers and entrepreneurs. and requires employers to check the legal status of every worker. it's won the support of two unlikely allies, business and labor. >> failure to have a rational and positive immigration program will choke this economy. it's not a good idea. >> it will be good for every worker here.

every day that we wait is a day wasted and a day that we've lost. >> reporter: the senate plan would impose the toughest border security measures in history. but it's not enough for some republicans who remain skeptical. >> especially in the area of border security, and internal enforcement of this system, i'm concerned that it doesn't go far enough. >> reporter: some republicans say they'll try to derail the reform plan which they see as an amnesty. still, house speaker john boehner told abc news, he's confident a compromise will pass by the end of the year. diana and john? >> all right. devin dwyer in washington, thank you. the aclu is suing over a collection of phone records by the nsa. the civil liberties group is calling for the obama administration to end the phone surveillance and purge records it has already gotten. there's no word about the whereabouts of edward snowden, whose leaked documents first exposed the program. part of the life snowden left behind involves his long-term girlfriend. lindsay mills, a pole dancer and member of a hawaiian

acrobatic dance troupe with her own youtube channel. reporters, saying his daughter is holding on. when asked if he had a message for snowden, the dad wished him good luck and sent his love. another leaked document is raising questions at the state department. an internal memo has surfaced about american diplomats and security details, accused of sexual assault, drug use and more. it also claims investigations into the allegations were stalled or called off. they're denying wrongdoing or that the investigations were interfered with at all. security being beefed up at the south africa hospital where nelson mandela is being treated for a lung infection. south africa's current president right now says mandela's condition is serious but stable. today is mandela's fifth day in intensive care. two of his daughters visited him yesterday. and another is returning home from her post in argentina to be by his side. here in new york, mayor michael bloomberg is out with an ambitious plan to protect the city from flooding. like that caused by superstorm sandy. among his proposals are removable flood walls that could

be put in place as a major storm approaches. miles of sand dunes, several levees and surge barriers are also part of the plan. bloomberg puts the price tag at $20 billion. no named tropical storms in today's forecast. but storms in the rockies. a summer-like day in the southeast. hazy, humid conditions, in the northwest. sunny in the desert southwest. >> phoenix is rising to 110 degrees today. low 90s in colorado, where the wildfires are still burning. from the mid-atlantic to new england, temperatures range from high 80s to high 60s. still to come, oprah opens her checkbook again. who is getting 12 million bucks. also, abercrombie & fitch is doing a 180. how the company plans to take the lead on bullying. and a wild ride caught on tape. see what the driver saw when his bmw flew off the cliff.

investors are hoping for a calmer trading day today after a volatile session. the dow closed down 116 points yesterday, wiping all the gains out that were made so far this month. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg faced angry shareholders yesterday for the first time since the company's rocky ipo. at the first shareholder meeting, many wanted to know if they would ever recoup their losses. zuckerberg pledged the company would continue to grow alongside new rival services. he also said facebook does not give the government access to its servers. chevy volt has failed to excite buyers. but maybe some new incentives will. general motors has announced rebates and new lease deals on the plug-in car, totalling about $5,000 off some models.

combined with big tax credits, the cost of the car drops to about 26,000 bucks. abercrombie & fitch is trying to generate some good p.r. for a change. comments about the company's ceo why it doesn't make plus-sized women's clothing caused outrage across the country. in response to those protests the retailer has pledged to support anti-bullying organizations. and will reward college scholarships to students active in such groups. oprah is opening her wallet again for another good cause. she is making a donation to the smithsonian museum of african-american history and culture. a theater at the museum will be named after her. it's currently under construction near the washington monument. and when we come back, a terrifying moment of impact. a car jumps a curb and ends up on top of a toddler. what the mother did to save her child's life. also ahead, a wild game three at the nba finals. blowout doesn't really come close. we'll be right back. scovered go.

recapping our breaking story. four, big wildfires burning out of control in colorado. a blaze near colorado springs has damaged or destroyed up to it's also forced more than 6,000 people to evacuate. firefighters are facing hot, dry, windy conditions today. they're not overlooking the animals. they took time to rescue a baby deer. people are scrambling to move out of harm's way. horses, all kinds of animals right now. now, for a look at the morning road conditions. it could be messy around the great lakes, due to some morning thunderstorms. later today, expect wet roads in parts of the mid-atlantic region. >> and if you're flying, those storms in the midwest are going to cause some problems. expect airport delays in chicago and detroit. more potential jurors will come under scrutiny near orlando today in the george zimmerman murder trial. >> attorneys questioned 11 people yesterday about how much pretrial publicity they've been exposed to after zimmerman shot 17-year-old trayvon martin.

among them, a black man who did not think it was a racial issue and a white man who said florida's stand your ground law was unnecessary. a cleveland man, now scheduled for his first court appearance on charges of holding three women captive in his home. ariel castro expected to plead not guilty to more than 300 charges, including rape, kidnapping and murder. the murder charges are in connection with the forced termination of a pregnancy. new developments in a case that's gripped texas, involving one of the state's most famous families. a suspect has now been charged with killing this man, t. boone pickens iv, the oil tycoon's college-age grandson. police say 21-year-old brennan rodriguez injected heroin into pickens' body, resulting in a fatal overdose in january. rodriguez now faces felony murder charges. and police here in new york are trying to track down a man who pulled off a jewelry heist in broad daylight at tiffany's on fifth avenue. the guy got away with two diamond necklaces worth about $100,000. police say he started talking to

the clerk. then, grabbed the jewelry from the counter and ran off. >> my goodness. a southern california grandmother says she has no regrets about firing on a man trying to break into her home. jan cooper of anaheim fired one shot while she was on the phone with 911. cooper said she is amazed by the anger in her voice and the curse word that she let fly after she fired that shot. >> uh-oh, i have no idea what's happening. but i don't like the sound of that dog. they're in our yard. i'm firing. back up you son of a [ bleep ]. back up. >> the stunned intruder apologized to cooper after she fired. she recalled telling her, i'm sorry, ma'am, i'm leaving. please, don't shoot. the ex-con who was not injured, was soon in police custody. >> good for her. well, a mother and her child here in new york are nursing some minor wounds and probably some frayed nerves this morning. check out this surveillance

video that shows you why. a cab jumps the curb yesterday, striking them and trapping an 8-month-old child under the car. the mother dove under the car and dragged the baby to safety. the driver suffered a heart attack and later died at the hospital. here's some incredible video also. incredible that the people in this car only suffered minor injuries. watch this. a bmw rolls off of a canyon road in arizona. there it goes. the driver lost control while coming around that bend. the incident happened last november. the video has just now been released. the two guys were said to have sustained just a couple of scratches. >> that's remarkable. >> yes, it is. turning to sports. the stanley cup finals get under way tonight with the boston bruins visiting the chicago blackhawks. as for the nba final, we get the latest highlights of last night's blowout from espn. >> welcome into your "sportscenter" update. i'm dario melendez. let's head to san antonio for game three of the nba finals between the miami heat and the san antonio spurs. the spurs dropped just one game

starting? >> quite well, with quiet conditions across the bay area. we are looking at mostly green on the map. not seeing any problems but we have construction that could put a kink in the commute northbound 101 we have a lane or two blocked for construction work. we do see a little bit of a slow down as the traffic starts to funnel through to 116. outside right now and the bay bridge toll plaza, a beautiful sight with hardly any cars from oakland to san francisco. eric and kristen? >> developing news from berkeley where the search is on for a man who sexually assault add young boy in a bathroom at the berkeley marina. investigators are working off of a unique suspect description. amy? >> he is described as a black man with blond air with green streaks in his hair.

police were intensely focusing on the area checking cars leaving the marina looking for this man. a 10-year old boy says he sexually assaulted him in the bathroom at the berkeley marina at 1:30 in the afternoon. the boy was playing on the lay ground and he went to the bathroom. >> this is more build. i have been here my whole life and never heard of something. i am shocked. it is safe. they have patrols all day every day. >> police say the man could have been hiding in the area after the assault and slipped into a brushy area where homeless hang out. they scoured the area but so far no arrests have been made. they are asking you to keep your eye out. he is physically doing okay with his family
