good thursday morning, let's begin with the wicked weather bearing down on millions of americans from the midwest to the midatlantic, unleashing destructive twisters and punishing thunderstorms. >> a giant line of ferocious storms already blamed for triggering 17 tornadoes. this morning the ohio valley is getting hammered by heavy rain, damaging winds, as the system now marches east. across the midwest this morning destruction brought by tornadoes, hail and powerful winds. hardest hit so far is iowa where twin tornadoes were spotted. a barn ripped to pieces, trees torn from the ground. a restaurant taking the brunt of the storm, the owner leaving just as the storm approached. >> it kind of kept getting closer, so we locked the door and jumped in and i think it probably hit two minutes after that. >> big cities in path of the explosive weather, the chicago white sox game postponed, golf ball-sized hail damaged cars in nearby indiana, and the powerful system forcing forecasters to assign their highest alert level

nation's capital. large hail and damaging winds, the primary threat but isolated tornadoes not out of the question. on top of this, the storm moves toward the coast and the new york city area through southern new england can't catch a break as far as rain is concerned, rain will pour down, flooding a big-time concern. john, diana, back to you. >> we'll track this system throughout the morning and have the latest on "good morning america." overnight, hot dry weather fueling fires burning out of control in colorado. nearly 100 homes have been destroyed and several others damaged in this area near colorado springs. the black forest blaze is one of two major fires burning now. at least 7,000 residents forced to evacuate and others warned they may have to leave at a moment's notice. >> my son wasn't home, he got some things out but he's safe. my dog is out, so everybody's out that i care about. >> 90-degree temperatures with winds gusting up to 30 miles an hour expected through tomorrow.

crews in the west are so busy fighting fires the forest service is borrowing cargo planes from the defense department to help. edward snowden remains out of sight in hong kong for another day after making a brief public appearance. the former nsa analyst who leaked information about government surveillance is hinting he may have more secrets up his sleeve. devin dwyer joins us with new details. >> good morning. snowden's leaks are creating a headache for the obama administration, latest that the nsi is hacking china is a potential embarrassment as the u.s. criticizes china for hacking of its own. in hong kong edward snowden is front-page news, still in hiding but dropping bombshell, this time telling a local paper the people of hong kong are targets of american cyberspace too. >> it's scary. >> reporter: from an nsa listening post in hawaii snowden says u.s. computer hackers hit china, north korea and hong kong
