>> abc7 news has breaking news. >> a sig-alert on highway 24 in lafayette because of a fire on a big rig hauling cars. this is from sky 7. >> the fire is out. a couple of lanes of traffic are moving but slowly with a huge backup as we mop up. we have video of the fire when it was raging, not too long ago in the past hour when firefighters were trying to put out the flames that engulfed the big rig and the nine cars it was carrying. this caused huge problems and going on for the past hour. >> the latest now on the commute from the east bay. >> if you have been tracking the fire since it happened, so as we go to sky 7 i will show you live pictures and this is what we were dealing with and it caused

during an early morning raid to remove a group of activists occupying the hayes family farm site. a man was pulled from a tree a short time ago using a cherry picker to lift officers to the protest and take him out of the tree. police pulled a total of three people from trees. at issue is the land slated for development. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield has an update in half an hour. >> reacting news in san joses police are investigating the 24th homicide of the year. matt keller joins us to tell us what happens. matt? >> the sun is coming up you can get a better view of the crime scene. the van is here and below it are markers, some evidence markers on the street where the officers are gathered. police got the 9-1-1 call at

12:30 arriving to find a man with multiple stab wounds taken to the hospital and died an hour later. police are not releasing his identity but officers believe he is 40. a neighbor said he has seen an increase in car thefts and graffiti but nothing like this. >> anything like this concerns me, you bet. we live in a gated community but it is accessible and it concerns me there is crime like that in this neighborhood especially with a death involved. scary. >> police told residents checkers could be block off for a few more hours, this is the 24th homicide of year. i asked two detectives if they had any suspects and they said "no." >> matt, thank you, this morning, police in fairfield are investigating a deadly shooting that happened at 10:00 on

peachtree drive. several people were fighting and someone pulled a gun. officers found a 36-year-old man who was shot and he died in the hospital. anyone with information is asked to call fairfield police. >> from forward, officials confirm they found a bird infected with west nile virus. the bird was an american crow but there are no human cases of west nile virus yet but there is one in sacramento county. >> from contra costa, walnut creek police are searching for the man who tried to problem a cigarette store. our media partner, the "contra costa times" reported it happened before 6:00 p.m. at the a mall. miss say an employee ran from the store account armed men left without take anything. the suspect is described as white in his mid-20's from 5' 9" to 6' and monday air and medium

monday and some facial air. call the walnut creek police department if you have information. >> the san francisco district attorney today is 3,000 miles from home, looking for ways to stop a sky rocketing wave of smartphone thefts. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo explains. >> it is called apple picking, but it is not just iphones, thieves grab smart phones out of your hand, a huge problem, and right now san francisco district attorney is if new york to try and help find a solution to this. he and new york's attorney general are holding what they call a smart phone summit and meeting with representatives from apple, samsung and microsoft to come up with a way to make smartphones less appealing to thieves. in san francisco, more than half of all robberies now involve a cell phone and some have led to victims getting hurt or beaten or cut. he is recommending all phones

vehicular manslaughter. he was intoxicated and speeding on memorial day when the mustang rear ended a honda before slamming into a retaining wall. all three passengers were killed. diaz left but turned himself in. he is held in the san mateo county jail on $1 million bail. >> we have a brand new update from leyla gulen on the sig-alert on westbound 24. what is happening? >> now we have word that three lanes have opened on westbound 24, where we have an active sig-alert involving a big rig that caught fire and the big rig was carrying nine vehicles that all caught fire, a major black plume of smoke and huge names that sparked a brushfire. now it appears that things have moved further to the right-hand shoulder and we have crews on the scene, a big rig tow behind

it and crews seem to have just stopped pouring water on to the big rig. it looks like the entire thing is charred, and maybe one car in the back could have survived, no doubt that could totaled. certainly what is totaled is the commute with two miles backup on 24 coming away from 680 but 680 is seeing a tremendous backup, and very slow conditions from pleasanton hill to walnut creek. right now, sky seven is following that heavy bumper to bumper gridlock and we will keep our eye on this as the morning continues. mount diabolo is clear so that could be an alternate. here is mike with the forecast. >> thank you, leyla gulen, appreciate the information, our highs compared to averages today, about six degrees warmer with 86 in livermore and napa topping out at 83, and oakland

>> abc7 news starts now with breaking news. >> the breaking news at 6:30 continues to be in lafayette on westbound 24, this is a picture of the scene from sky 7. you can see what is going on, on the shoulders, where a car-carrying big rig caught fire with the load, sparked grass fire, and pull out now, but you can see the damage is done to the traffic. look at the horrible backup that extends because at one point only one lane is open and now it is three lanes open but to lanes remain closed. just a horrible drive. >> at the height of this, when the big rig car carrier was blazing away causing the grass fire, firefighters came along and put out both fires but the

carrying at least nine vehicles and everything caught fire and it is charred and that sparked a brushfire. our top speed is seven miles per hour causing hugeom de pleasanton hill. along 580, this is the alternate, to 580, that is the best way but this is the walnut creek drive so it is at least 46 minutes out of concord to 24 and you want to stick to highway 4, that will take you to 80 and you will be on your way but right now it is absolutely nightmarish >> caltran could be able to on the new eastern span of the bay bridge on schedule after all. two of the three internationally known bridge experts hired to review the construction say nothing should stop the bridge from opening to traffic on september 3 as originally planned. we we don't what the third expert things.

you can see the result. >> leyla gulen, how long is the backup? are there any good options? >> there are a few good options. this transition from southbound 680 to westbound 24 is a save -- a sea of cars. we saw some cars moving along okay on mount diabolo but you will run into streetlights. if you live in the concord area and you travel along highway four do not get on 680. it is backed up from 680 on highway 4. that is 46-minute drive if you dare take it, six miles south to highway 24 so take 4 to 80 or 580. that will help you tremendously. >> 6:47. san francisco district attorney is attending a smartphone summit in new york to discuss the soaring rise in cell phone theft
