breaking overnight, dozens of people get the shock of a lifetime. >> one moment they're eating dinner. the next, they're in miami's biscayne bay. an entire waterfront dock collapses beneath them. new images just coming in. red line. the president promises new military aid to syrian rebels after that nation uses deadly chemical weapons on its own people. but how far will the u.s. go? price tag. leaked documents show the president's upcoming trip to africa could cost $100 million. and wrong turn. the pricey mistake as a jet smashes into a nearby hangar. good friday morning. what was supposed to be a fun night out turned into a disaster. and dozens of people were dunked right into the water. >> fans had packed a miami bar

to watch the nba finals when a patio deck they were standing on collapsed. abc's matt gutman reports from the scene. an island in miami's biscayne bay. >> reporter: 100 people on this dock. 50 feet wide, 20 feet long. they stood up to cheer and runs over the bay between miami and miami beach. these people tumbled into the water. and the wood there became so slippery that they couldn't get out. lots of people injured. dozens, over 30 hurt. two have been critically. >> we were sitting there. we're watching the game. drinking our beers. and all of a sudden, whoosh, we're in the water. he went under. we both went under. i popped up. and then, i'm grabbing him, pulling him out. and then, there were people standing up on the concrete part that helped us out. within seconds. there was no warning. there was no nothing. >> reporter: people were using ladders, diving into the water to help other people get out. a very chaotic scene that lasted

for much longer than you would expect. even an hour after this crash happened, after that patio came tumbling down, when i arrived, they were still wheeling people out on gurneys. a lot of people got stuck underneath either tables or chairs or umbrellas or palm frons. so, a tremendously harrowing experience for some of those folks even though the water's probably not even chest-deep. >> our thanks to matt gutman in miami. and matt will have more later on on "good morning america." also overnight, we've been tracking the ferocious wildfire burning out of control near colorado springs. well, it's now claimed two lives. the victims appear to be trying to escape when they were overtaken what is now the most destructive wildfire in colorado's history. since tuesday, 360 homes and 16,000 acres have burned. >> once it's up in the trees and moving, there is nothing the firefighters can do. basically, they're now looking out for themselves. >> more than 40,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. and the military has been called

in to help. the fire is only 5% contained. there's a major change in u.s. policy towards the civil war in syria. the white house will increase military support to the rebels after confirming that the assad regime used chemical weapons, including sarin gas. abc's alex marquardt filed this report moments ago. >> reporter: after a lot of back and forth and uncertainty, the obama administration is now making it clear, they believe the forces of syrian president bashar al assad, have used chemical weapons and have crossed that famous red line that president obama has so often discussed. they say around 100 to 150 have been killed from those chemical weapons. just a tiny fraction of the around 100,000 syrians who have been killed since this civil war began in syria, more than 2 years ago. the white house is calling this is game-changer. and says they'll increase direct military aid to the rebels. there are reports the obama administration is considering a wide range of weapons. but so far, no decision has been

made public. now, what does appear to be clear is that the rebels will not be getting a no-fly zone that they've been begging for and which several members of congress have been pushing for. that said, the rebels will certainly welcome this news of greater aid. but the question remains over which rebel groups will be receiving it. the rebels are extremely fractured. and some of the strongest elements have sworn allegiance to al qaeda. so, as we've seen since the beginning, the obama white house is proceeding extremely cautiously. alex marquardt, abc news, istanbul. polls are open in iran today, as voters there select a replacement for president mahmoud ahmadinejad. six candidates are in the race. a moderate, four conservatives, and a hard-liner. they're all loyal to iran's supreme leader who casts his vote this morning. we're getting a fascinating inside look at just how much president obama's next trip to africa is going to cost. the details come from "the washington post," which has obtained a confidential planning document about this trip. the price tag could run up to

$100 million. and the resources needed are staggering. 56 support vehicles. 24-hour fighter jet coverage over the president's air space. an aircraft carrier with a manned trauma center, in case of an emergency. hundreds of secret service agents will accompany mr. obama to senegal, south africa and tanzania. six months ago today, the innocence of newtown, connecticut, was shattered by the deadly school massacre there. those touched most closely by the tragedy will are continuing their efforts to strengthen the nation's gun laws. a new push begins today. abc's devin dwyer joins us from washington with more on this. good morning, devin. >> reporter: good morning john, diana. the magnitude of this tragedy is so enormous, investigators are still compiling thousands of pages and interviews about what happened. but today is about remembering the victims. >> allison wyatt, age 6. >> reporter: six months later, the loss is still incomprehensible. >> gracie mcdonald, age 7. >> reporter: 20 first graders, 6

educators murdered at sandy hook elementary. the families of the victims are now fighting against fading memories. they're using the anniversary to renew a push for new gun control laws. >> we're not going away. this heartbreak that i carry, this life sentence that i have, no one should ever bear this burden. >> reporter: the families' emotional pleas have been unable to move congress. a senate bill to expand background checks stalled earlier this year. proposed bans on assault-style weapons and high-capacity clips are off the table. >> our hearts are broken. our spirit is not. >> reporter: top lawmakers say they are gearing up for another push to expand background checks. the group mayors against illegal guns, today joins the campaign with this bus, painted with the names of victims of gun violence. still, opposition remains strong. the road ahead is long. >> the writing is on the wall. background checks will pass the united states senate. it's only a question of when.

>> reporter: the focus, today, turns to connecticut and a community healing slowly from tragedy. >> it's been the longest six months of my entire life. but also, the shortest. we're looking forward to a quiet day of reflection and privacy. >> reporter: the newtown community will gather later this morning for a moment of silence. as for the scene of the massacre, the town voted last month to tear down sandy hook elementary and rebuild on the same site. john and diana? >> devin dwyer, in washington for us this morning. thank you. and washington is just one city that's cleaning up from a powerful storm that hammered the mid-atlantic region yesterday. >> a 4-year-old boy killed when a falling tree crushed him in richmond, virginia. the child and his father had been rushing to safety when this accident happened. three tornadoes touched down near baltimore. thousands lost power. there was no major damage. there was also a rare tornado in oregon. the twister damaged three buildings not far from portland. it was fairly weak as twisters go, with winds toppling about 90-mile-per-hour. the last notable tornado in the state was 2010. let's take a look at the weather today, across the nation. rain will linger in the

welcome back. the carnival "triumph" is cruising again. the ship that was crippled back in february by an engine room fire is back at sea this morning after $150 million in repairs and upgrades. those include new bars and restaurants for the 3,500 passengers onboard. the current cruise and the next cruise, sold out. now that the supreme court has ruled that a company cannot own a gene, competitors are already lining up to market tests for that gene at a much lower cost. the gene is the same one that brought about angelina jolie's decision to have a double-mastectomy. the court yesterday ruled the gene is not the property of a utah company. and that clears the way for other companies to offer similar tests. major asian stock markets were higher overnight, following a second rebound on wall street. traders were in a buying mood yesterday, following positive reports about u.s. hiring and spending, at retailers.

new information this morning about a farewell note left behind by the gunman who shot and killed five people in southern california last week. >> police say in the handwritten note found on john zawahri's body, he apologizes for killing his father and brother. he didn't mention the rampage on the santa monica college campus that followed with two murders. in that note, he also expressed concern that his mother would be taken care of. >> he hoped that his mother would be looked after financially. and she would receive financial recompense from the father's estate. that he said good-bye to friends. and it was more of a farewell. >> police also revealed they found weapons and zip guns during a search of zawahri's house. four people are dead after a workplace shooting in st. louis. police say the owner of a home health care company opened fire on his business partner and two other employees. he then turned the gun on himself. surveillance video showed a brief verbal dispute before that shooting. the men and women who died were reportedly all immigrants from somalia. an explosion at a chemical plant in louisiana has left one

worker dead, dozens injured. the blast could be felt five miles away. witnesses describe a chaotic scene of towering flames. and workers scrambling over gates to escape the plant, which is southeast of baton rouge. the cause is under investigation. an unusual scene at a small airport in southern california. take a look. a private jet plowed right into a hangar, coming to a stop halfway inside the building. the plane's engines were being tested when that jet suddenly skipped over the blocks that were supposed to hold its wheels in place. thankfully that hangar was empty and no one was hurt. hillary clinton may be turning her attention to the nonprofit world these days. but she's still fueling speculation about another run for the white house. mrs. clinton appeared at an annual gathering in chicago, for the clinton global initiative. she talked about focusing on early childhood development, creating jobs and other issues she says will shape the country's future. rupert murdoch's third wife, wendi, was once one of his staunchest defenders. remember when she blocked the pie from being thrown in his face? now, murdoch has announced he is divorcing wendi after 14 years

of marriage. in the divorce papers, the 82-year-old murdoch claims his relationship with the 44-year-old has broken down, irretrievable. she is murdoch's third wife. he paid his last wife $1.7 billion in a settlement. that might be the most expensive divorce in history. let's turn to sports. this morning, the nba finals are all evened up again. last night in san antonio, the heat's big three, too much for the spurs. >> lebron james, dwyane wade and chris bosh totaled 85 points all by themselves. lebron scoring 33, as miami got its mojo back, winning 109-93. the series, all tied up at 2-2 games. game five is sunday night. you can catch it right here, where else? on abc. you can say fans at the yankees/athletics game got two for the price of one. the game lasted 18 innings. >> that's when oakland finally got a clutch hit to win it 3-2. oakland is now the first american league team since 1971 to play 2 games in 1 season lasting at least 18 innings. wow. some new security measures
