>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thank for joining you on this father's day, june 16th. let's get things started with a quick first look at our weather with meteorologist lisa argen, hey, carolyn. what a beautiful shot from our mt. tam camera. you see 5:47 the official sunrise. the sun is up. we are looking at numbers comfortably cool for the runners. the skies have been clear for most of the evening and early morning hours around the bay. that's why we've dropped into the mid-40s for santa rosa and napa. the delta strong winds, 55 degrees. 54 in union city. but the low clouds and fog will

not be gone for long. in fact they are going to hang out along the coast and obscure some of the sun at the shoreline. numbers will be cool in the 50s there. but the range will be through the lower 80s. so starting out 40s and 50s. this evening the fog comes back in and that will be a major player in the next several days, keeping the on shore flow with us and the temperatures a little bit cooler than average for our inland east bay valleys. i'll explain and have the numbers and tell you when it's going to warm up in a few minutes. carolyn. >> lisa talked about the runners. happening now. the 36th annual san francisco marathon is off and running on the streets of san francisco. the race checked off about 30 minutes ago with added security in place, following the attacks in boston. abc7 news reporter nick smith is joining us live near the starting line. good morning, nick. you have got more on this marathon. >> absolutely. carolyn, you know one of the best parts about covering this

race is the fact that they do it in waves. you get a chance to meet different groups of people who are starting to lineup for their part of the race. one of the things that everyone told me repeatedly is they have kept the incidents in boston in the back of their mind and they are aware of everything that happened there. and those procedures have played a part in the way things have played out today. these new security measures are all in response to the the boston marathon coming in april. the attack is very much on the minds of runners as they get ready to hit the streets. in fact, there was a 35 to 40 minute early start for the first time for this race. the start line here between embarcadero and full some and mission street were two of the only three security check points. but runners told me they could not let what happened in boston affect wait they approached the race today. >> 'cuz you don't want to change who you are as a result and as a consequence of the bad actions of others. >> now runners also had to check

any bag or backpack bigger than a piece of binder paper. now officials tell abc7 news that about 5,000 fewer participants registered for this year's race. the roster list this year is close to 20,000. no nonamerican has won the event since 2009, and i spoke to a couple here today, carolyn, who tell me that they want to make sure that that tradition holds, that they are hoping they can be the one to be successful. and if lisa is right, the weather should hold out and we should have a, you know, an american winner -- an american run erwining this race this afternoon. we are live at the embarcadero, nick smith, abc7 news. >> we will see about that. thank you, nick. the full marathon starts and finishes along the embarcadero near mission and crosses much of the city. we have this map along with the list. road closers on our website, abc7news.com. and for help navigating around all those closers, you can get

waze on your smartphone. you can download our exclusive abc7 news traffic app electric apple's app store or from google play. >> we have gabeing news. a man, teenager, was shot last night after attending a child's party. it happened at 11:30 at a driveway on sawyer street. the victim, an 18-year-old, was taken to the hospital where he died early this morning. a at least two suspects got away from the scene before officers arrived. that's vallejo's 11th homicide of the year. if we get more information about this during our newscast, we will bring it to you right away. today we could learn the names of two men killed in an early morning crash in emeryville. it happened on powell street around 12:30 a.m. saturday. investigators are trying to determine what caused the car to crash into a tree. the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. his passenger was taken to the

hospital where he later died of his injuries. no other cars appear to have been involved. still no identity this morning on the suspected robber killed friday night in castro county by an alameda county sheriff. according to authorities the man robbed boulevard burger. two 19-year-old employees stepped in to try to stop him. >> it's not recommended to attack a person with a firearm. fortunately it worked out in this particular case. >> you worry about, you know, like young people taking a job and some of the dangers and risks that come along with it. gosh, you just hope and pray that type of thing doesn't happen, especially in a town like castro valley. >> a deputy conducting a traffic stop nearby was alerted. he shot and killed the suspect, firing in a narrow space between the robber and the employees. the restaurant is closed until tomorrow. one suspect is in custody, the search is on for two more after an explosive was thrown as

-- at a san francisco building. it happened about 4:00 yesterday afternoon. witnesses say three men threw what looked like dynamite at a restaurant window. >> heard a really loud boom, and then out from -- coming out of there i see three kind of punk looking kids running away and a guy chasing after them. >> i took off after them and they stopped right around the corner over there so i got out my cell phone and took a picture of them. as soon as i took a picture of them, they took off running. >> a window was shattered, a planter box damaged. police arrested one suspect thanks to that witness's picture. an 81-year-old san rafael man has minor burns after trying to save his home with a garden hose. homeowner andy grimes tells our media partner, the marin county journal. he heard an explosion and grabbed a garden hose to put out a fire outside his garage yesterday.

i you can see the destruction. the firefighters kep the flames from spreading. total loss estimated at a quarter million dollars. in colorado hundreds of residents evacuated from the black forest fire are back home this morning. the evacuation orders were lifted because of major gains fighting the flames. the fire is now 55% contained. the burned area remains at 25 square miles. officials say so far 500 homes have been destroyed. the origin of the fire is under investigation. california lawmakers have finalized the state budget. it is a major shift from the bitter battles that usually plague the process. abc7 news reporter explains the budget and the bills of that passed. >> lawmakers wrapped up their work on the state's $96.3 billion spending plan. it calls for healthcare expansion, which means more than a million more californians

could be covered by med-i-cal. a pass passed that would provide tuition assistance at public university to students who families earn up to $150,000 a year. those students would have to maintain a 2.0 grade point average. finally the legislature passed a bill that would distribute $2.5 billion over five years for energy efficiency projects at schools and community colleges. governor jerry brown took to twitter this afternoon to issue this statement about the budget. "after two and a half years of struggle and difficult times, california's budget is balanced and sustainable into the future." the governor has two weeks to

veto items he disagreed with or sign the spending plan into law. abc7 news. >> this lawmaker was especially happy the budget passed quickly. assemblyman hernandez rushed out to get married. he had to leave before they adjourned to mick his flight late in the afternoon. he said the matter of the budget never came up when his fiancee set the date. tomorrow the santa clara board of supervisors will review its proposed budget recommendations to address a $67 million shortfall. officials are looking at $29 million in savings from county departments. $20 million from a sales tax measure approved by voters in november and more than $21 million in labor concessions. the budget deadline is friday. opening statements will begin tomorrow in marin county in the trial of an alleged bay area serial killer. the 9-year-old man is charged with killing four women between 1977 and '94. their bodies were found along

rural roads. the man is representing himself. he's expected to give an opening statement to the jury tomorrow afternoon. the trial is expected to last until mid-november. he faces the death penalty if convicted of committing multiple murders. lisa argen is here now with a look at our cool and breezy accuweather forecast. >> yes, nice and clear if you are in the south bay this morning. san jose, a beautiful start but it's cool. low 50s here. going for a high of about 74 today. that's below average. you will be pretty cool right through the middle of the week. i'll tell you when you are going to warm up and have the temperatures for your father's day forecast coming up. >> thank you, lisa. also next, vice president joe biden's surprise stop in the south bay before wrapping up his trip to the bay area. and disaster avoided. how a dog saved two people as they walked down a san

new this morning there are no early reports of damage following an earthquake that struck south of mexico's capital this morning. that quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck just after midnight, shaking buildings in mexico city. power outages have been reported in parts of the city. seismologists say the quake was centered about 76 miles from the capital. vice president joe biden is back in washington this morning after a weekend bay area visit that included party fundraising and stumping for a south bay congressman. he also got to watch his grandniece receive her master's degree yesterday during ceremonies at stanford university. earlier in the day he surprised patrons and staffers at hobey's

restaurant off highway 101 and moffett field. that unannounced visit was to support democratic support for a congressman who faces re-election battle. people were thrilled to see him walk in, shake hands and pose for pictures. >> my daughter said to him that her uncle calls him joey b, which he thought was funny. we had a great talk, keep up the great work. it's amazing to meet him in person. >> biden's bay area visit was primarily to attend friday's democratic party fundraiser in san francisco. as the senate continues debate on comprehensive immigration reform, will police cal opposition stall any action? in this week's sunday exclusive, senator marco rubio discusses whether they can reach a compromise deal. you can watch "this week" right

here at abc7 at 8:00. >> knew this morning, a solar-powered plane trying to fly across the u.s. has landed near the nation's capital. it touched down at the dulles international airport just after midnight after a 14 hour flight from cincinnati. this is the first bid by a solar plane capable of being airborne day and night without any fuel to fly across the u.s. it took off from moffett field in mountain view on may 3rd. it will complete the final leg of its journey next month. man's best friend cam through once again. when a guide dog in training proved he's more than ready. it happened last week in san rafael when a yellow lab helped prevent a tragedy. wayne freedman has the incredible story. >> go forward. >> in san rafael everyone knows

this site, trainers for guide dogs to the blind, walking and teaching, in this case a young dog named o'neil. >> we were working on just having a straight line all the way to the curb. >> usually it's routine, but last monday at the corner and 4th and eve streets in ran san rafael it nearly became a deathly disaster. >> i'm thinking what is that sound? >> it shot out like a rocket. >> richard owns the building on the corner which has surveillance cameras and here is what they captured. that's danielle, todd and o'neil barely escaping an out of control car that barreled down the sidewalk at high-speed in reverse. if not for the dog that alerted todd who then pushed the blindfolded danielle, this would have been a tragic story rather than an almost-tragic one. >> i think the dog looked before i did. i don't know what the dog would have done if i didn't grab danielle, so that's something you never know. of. >> in my mine it seemed forever.

>> the driver was a 93-year-old woman in the car with her husband. it remains unclear how she lost control. the car broke other window, it left skid marks along the side of the building and somehow squeezed all the way through to the street. >> didn't seem like a risky job when you took it, did it. >> no, hardly. >> the organization breeze -- breeze puppies and trains them and gives 300 dogs a year to needy blind people across the country. >> i had just done that exact same route two other times with o'neil. >> there's a subtle twist what happened because it's only a ten week training program. after that the dog goes off into the real world. for danielle and o'neil, the incident happened in week 8, which means after all they went through, in two weeks they must say good-bye. >> even from day one he was special. >> good boy. >> and now not just a guide dog, but a life-saving one, too. in san rafael, wayne freedman, abc7 news.

>> wayne was one of two abc7 news greats honored last night at the northern california emmys. don sanchez received the board of governor's award, which is the highest honor given to tv news journalists. wayne was recognized with the governor's citation award, which acknowledges a career of excellence. they both accepted at the annual ceremony in san francisco. wayne freedman obviously remains a busy abc7 news reporter. don sanchez retired in december after more than 40 years with abc7 news. you see sherrill there watching on with pride. congratulations, guys. you both deserve those awards. lisa argen is here now talking about your father's day weather. they deserve some awards too, dads. >> for sure. starting out with clear conditions. it's a beautiful start to the day. sun was up before 6:00. low clouds and with us this

morning but you have to look pretty hard for them because it is a very pretty start in parts of the bay with clear conditions. you can see some partly cloudy sky here in santa cruz. so most of the cloud cover has been along the central coast. it will continue to ramp up, though, throughout the day and will provide cooling throughout the afternoon. 54 mountain view, 52 san jose with mid-50s santa cruz. 51 san francisco. with much of the sky clear overnight, numbers have bottomed out into the 40s in some area. from the sutro two, this is what i mean. 63 livermore and kind of breezy out toward the delta. los gatos 49 degrees. we are looking at another nice shot this morning from our roof camera where temperatures are kind of cool in san francisco, but with the clear sky and the lack of wind right now, it feels pretty good. we will call it partly cloudy overall. cooler and breezy today just by a couple of degrees. the main cool down was yesterday and then it's going to take several days until we begin to

warm up. so there's further cooling for monday and tuesday for much of our inland east bay. then we will begin to recover. so let's talk about that fog. we have it patchy right now, and it sits right under about 1,000 feet. but throughout the afternoon the onshore flow continues and with winds up to 20 miles an hour it will be cool from oakland to san francisco. san jose should see a high both of 74 today and tomorrow. then we will have a weak little system pass on through, and it's after the system passes on through that the numbers recover in the south bay thursday, friday and back into the 80s. the coolest day of the week looks to be on tuesday in parts of the south bay with high temperatures hard-pressed to reach 70 degrees. today into the low to mid-70s for the most part with 75 in sunnyvale. look at santa cruz. 68 degrees. 72347 morgan hill and on the peninsula we are back into the 50s here with the gray conditions half moon bay. breezy in the afternoon. 67 in redwood city.

and in san francisco much like you had yesterday with some sunshine. closer towards the financial district, 62 degrees. and in the north bay numbers pretty cool for this time of year with mid-60s sausalito. mid-70s in petaluma. near east bay, plenty mid-60s from newark to san leandro today at 66. you head inland and this is where you get a break for the heat. in fact, cooler than average with numbers in the upper 70s from pleasant ton and 80s livermore. the acuseven-day forecast has numbers below average by tuesday with mainly 60s and 70s around the bay tomorrow and tuesday. then by wednesday about 80. still breezy. we begin to warm up as the seasons change and numbers will climb into the mid-to upper 80s, lower 90s by next weekend. we will let you know how warm it will take my bicycle your community. you can keep track of bay area weather on twitter, nice day for

company released a 49-foot helium-filled balloon in new zealand the idea is the balloon will beam the internet down-to-earth. >> for someone would need a small antenna about the sides of a softball on the side of their house and they plug their computer into that antenna and they get internet from the sky. >> the test volunteer received the internet for about 15 minutes before the balloon floated out of range. two-thirds of the world's population, about 4.8 billion people, still don't have the internet. >> coming up, young creative minds. the stanford program that's giving teenagers the tools to become inventors. >> and if you look over my shoulder, you can see another wave of runners make their way down the embarcadero. of course we are talking about the 36th annual san francisco marathon. i'll talk to you about some of the security procedures put in place to make this year's

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. a beautiful shot from our sutro tower here. you can see the sun above the marine layer which sits over 1,000 feet. but it has been clear throughout most neighborhoods this overnight and early morning hours. that's why we've dropped into the mid-40s. fairfield 55. 54 union city. the forecast for the rest of the day calls foran another sunny afternoon if you are away from the coast. away from the bay, low 60s to upper 6os. along the coast it will be cool with those winds picking up throughout the afternoon. mid-50s with the clouds. up to about 61 degrees.

in hand, yeah, it's very pleasant here. mid-70s to the low to mid-80s for father's day. we have the cooling trend continuing for the first portion of the work week. then the warmup gets underway as summer begins. i will detail that in a few minutes. carolyn. thank you, lisa. happening now the 36th annual san francisco marathon is underway, well underway on the streets of san francisco. this year there is added security in place following the attacks in boston. abc7 news reporter nick smith joins us live near the starting line with more on the marathon. about 20,000 runners, nick? >> that's right, carolyn. that's about 5,000 or so fewer that have signed up in the past. there's no direct relation to anything specific but a lot of runners i spoke to this morning is fear may have played a part with some of those choosing not to participate in the case. security was a big thing this

year. a three block area of the embarcadero was blocked off and only a few access points, one on mission, one on howard and one on fulson streets. for the first time the start and finish lines were completely closed with police officers and bomb-sniffing dogs to search bags. runners also had new rules to follow about what they could carry during the race. only small backpacks with a 2-liter drinking tank or less was allowed. but still they say participation is necessary. >> because of what happened in boston, i do want to show that running is still fun and should be fun and safe. >> now the san francisco marathon is a loop course. the course starts and finishes on the embarcadero. officials tell abc7 news about 5,000 fewer registrants entered for the race. the roster list, the number at close to 20,000 runners. again, we have watched steady waves of runners take off.

we will continue to follow this, and i'll have a report that i will file later in the day. at the embarcadero, nick smith, abc7 news. >> thank you, nick. for people when want to get around the road closers, they should use our abc7 waze app. a group in the east bay has raised money to help sexually exploited children recover from that trauma. the organization "missy" hosted their second annual inspire change gala at the rotunda in oakland. it featured a guest speaker, silent auction and plus dinner and dancing. new york city mayor michael bloomberg will be the commencement speaker at the at graduation ceremonies at stanford. he said their ideas fall in line with the university's entrepreneurial spirit. last week he met with ed lee. the two have plans to co-host a technology summit this year in new york.

some of our best creativity happens when we are young and a group at stanford thinks we need to do something about that. they want to give teenagers the tools they need to become inventors. johnathan bloom spent some time with some bright young minds and the professor that hopes to inspire them. >> hello, hello. you're not working anymore. >> it's no laughing matter. trial and error is a great way to learn. >> thank you very much. >> that's why these high-schoolers are learning not in a classroom but in a state of the art product design lab at stanford with things like 3d printers and laser cutters. >> they actually have to measure and you are get the measurements right. a lot of them tell us this is the first time that math was useful. >> that's the professor, head of an eight week program stanford calls makers in residence. it teach science and math by teaching teenagers to invent things and build them. from a shirt that lights your way home to a pillow that gets

to you class on time. >> these will vibrate your head when you are asleep and wake you up. >> the teens are learning to solve problems and learning about themselves. >> i didn't think that i could program, but i was able to program the system. >> the program is meant to empower kids but also has another goal, to empower schools and teachers by offering them a completely new way to teach math and science and proving that it works. >> unfortunately our public schools are more and more doing testing and kind of rogue learning and all kinds of things like that that help prepare kids for the jobs of the 19th century. >> but in the 21st century he argues this style of learning should be anywhere and stanford is setting out to make it happening, building fab labs like this one. he likes what he sees. >> it is surprising to me and it's inspiring. >> even more inspiring is hearing the teenagers sum up their 8 weeks here. >> you get to try new things and use technology in a way that

san francisco's great highway is closed in both directions from slope boulevard to lincolnway until sometime later this week. the reason is a move made by the city every year that's ultimately unsuccessful, but still very necessary. >> you are watching a fight between man and nature. bulldozers moving the sand at ocean beach toward the shore to keep it from blowing on to the great highway. eventually gusty winds always show who is boss. neighborhood's old-timers will tell you that. >> it's a losing battle, of course, as we all know. but they keep trying. it puts people to work, right? this is how it looks during the

spring months with the wind in a frenzy. the great highway was built on top of sand dunes back in 1929. so what happens is not a surprise. these homeowners across the street from the gate highway deal with the sand, but for their predecessors, this was real beachfront property. take a look at the sand dunes in the 1940s. the sand dunes drifted toward doorsteps. back then people complained as they do now and the city responded. these days it's not cheap. just under $300,000 a year for a futile effort the department of public works compares to greek mythology. >> are you familiar with he pushes the boulder to the top and falls down and rolls down and starts over again. that's what this is like. >> at least they are trying. but it's difficult. >> long-term solutions could include fencing, more plants to try to trap the sand everybody even giving in and letting

nature reclaim part of the great highway. for now this yearly temporary solution is all they have got. >> in addition to the sand removal work, waving work begins tomorrow for southbound lanes of the great highway from lincoln to slote. it's part of a $7 million improvement project. that work is expected to last fire days. northbound lanes will be repaved next week. so people who use that as a commute, i guess they get used to what goes on there. >> i would think so. right now it's cool and we have partly cloudy skies in san francisco but a beautiful shot from our roof camera. look how still it is, 51 degrees. another ten degrees of warming, putting you just in the low 60sed to san francisco. and the west winds ramping up not only in the city, but other parts of the bay as well. we have fog along the coast. we will detail the father's day forecast and when the warmup arrives coming up. >> thank you, lisa. also ahead, a local college star

forecast today, tomorrow and the next several days. there's an area of low pressure hangs off the coast. here's the plan for the rest of the morning. from the san mateo coast, half moon bay, pacifica, you will have the fog and then it redevelops. it will be along point reyes, pulling back for a short time along santa cruz. it will be pretty breezy with winds up to 20 miles an hour and only partial sun he is coast. for the next several days this little system will be influencing us, allowing for the moderate onshore wind flow. in fact the east bay valleys is where the temperatures will be pretty cool. we are used to the breeze around the bay and the coast, but our inland east bay will be knocked down into the 70s for tomorrow and tuesday. upper 80s for yosemite. 47 in the northern sierra. about 60 monterey. certainly a little cool and breezy today. but the numbers range from just the low 60s to the mid-60s across the bay. we will have the west winds

cranking up. 68 in palo alto with the sun coming into play and also it's already sunny for you in the east bay. so it should be a nice afternoon, although not as warm maybe with temperatures in the low to mid-60s for the game at 1:00 and the accuweather seven-day forecast calls for the cool down. mid-and upper 70s for the east bay so that will be below average. 50s remaining at our coast through the middle of the week. as we get into summertime, by thursday a little bit warmer inland but it's really friday and saturday with he will be back about into the upper 80s. >> all right. so the game, any kind of sporting activity would be great for dads? >> exactly. a nice, cool start this morning. >> thanks, lisa. let's check out sports. phil mickelson tees off at 12:20 this afternoon with the one-shot lead, trying to win his first us open. he's been runner-up a record five times in his career at the open. besides it being father's day, today is also his 43rd birthday.
