>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thank for joining you on this father's day, june 16th. let's start with a quick first look at the father's day forecast. >> they probably all out and about already on a bike ride or run. nice and sunny. this is vollmer peak. we are looking at the fog gathering along the coast. although it's nice and sunny, the marine layer will continue to deepen throughout the day today. 57 union city, 60 los gatos with mid-60s by the delta. we started out nice and sunny, but the fog at the coast will continue to be a factor in the forecast today and the next several days. so just upper 50s along our beaches, the san mateo coast.

60s not only san francisco and oakland, and this forecast is going to hold for the next several days. i'll detail that for you coming up a bit later. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. happening now, the 36th annual san francisco marathon is off and running on the streets of san francisco this morning. added security is in place following the attacks in boston. abc7 news reporter nick smith joins us live along the embarcadero, the start and the finish of the race. nick, you were able to talk with the winners? >> absolutely. carolyn, it was absolutely fantastic watching these people cross the line. and still able to have a conversation after running a marathon. are you kidding me? carolyn, this is the first time that the embarcadero has been closed from mission street to fulsom for the race. and this is the reason why. if you look to the right you see everyone has had to go through a security checkpoint. this, of course, in light of boston. you have to go through the security checkpoint, security

guards will actually check your bags, backpacks and strollers. there were only three access points to the secure areas, one on mission, oie on howard and the one here on fulsom. runners also had new rules to follow what they could carry during the race. the top finisher is a french pac student living in new york with unofficial time of 2:25:14. >> i really wanted to come here. i'm very glad to have won it. >> i spoke with him about security, and he says, you know, that was the last thing on his mind. all he wanted to do was run a race. officials have guaranteed the runners and those who participated that this would, indeed, be a safe event. security remains tight. there were ununiformed and k9 uniforms moving through the crowd and checking packages and more or less sniffing the crowd and making sure nothing was

show where police are investigating a fatal shooting last night. a teenager was shot after attending a child's party. it happened around 11:30 in a driveway on sawyer street. 18-year-old was taken to the hospital where he tied this morning. two suspects got got away before officers arrived. that's vallejo's 11th homicide of the year. today we could learn the names of two men killed in an early morning crash in emeryville. it happened on powell street around 12:30 a.m. saturday. investigators are trying to determine what caused the car to crash into a tree the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. you saw a memorial there his passenger was taken to the hospital where he later died of his injuries. no other cars appear to have been involved. still no identity this morning on the suspected robber killed friday night in castro valley by andrew alberts immediate da county sheriff.

according to authorities the man robbed boulevard burger. two 19-year-old employees stepped in to try to stop him. >> it's not recommended to attack a person with a firearm. fortunately it worked out in this particular case. >> you worry about, you know, like young people taking a job and some of the dangers and risks that come along with it. gosh, you just hope and pray that type of thing doesn't happen, especially in a town like castro valley. >> a deputy conducting a traffic stop nearby was alerted. he shot and killed the suspect, firing in a narrow space between the robber and the employees. the restaurant is closed until tomorrow. one suspect is in custody, the search is on for two more after an explosive was thrown at a san francisco building. it happened about 4:00 yesterday afternoon. witnesses say three men threw what looked like dynamite at a restaurant window. >> heard a really loud boom, and then out from -- coming out of there i see three kind of punk looking kids running away and a guy chasing after them.

>> i took off after them and they stopped right around the corner over there so i got out my cell phone and took a picture of them. as soon as i took a picture of them, they took off running. >> a window was shattered, a planter box damaged. police arrested one suspect thanks to that witness's picture. an 81-year-old san rafael man has minor burns after trying to save his home with a garden hose. homeowner andy grimes tells our media partner, the marin county journal. he heard an explosion and grabbed a garden hose to put out a fire outside his garage yesterday. i you can see the destruction. the property inside was destroyed. fire crews from several cities kept the flames from spreading. total loss estimated at a quarter million dollars. in colorado hundreds of residents evacuated from the black forest fire are back home this morning. the evacuation orders were lifted because of major gains fighting the flames. the fire is now 55% contained.

it is the state's worst ever. the burned area remains at 25 square miles. officials say two people have died and so far 500 homes have been destroyed. the origin of the fire is under investigation. swift approval by california lawmakers who have finalized the state budget. it is a major shift from the bitter battles that usually plague the process. abc7 news reporter explains the budget and the bills of that passed. >> lawmakers wrapped up their work on the state's $96.3 billion spending plan. it calls for healthcare expansion, which means more than a million more californians could be covered by med-i-cal. a pass passed that would provide tuition assistance at public university to students who families earn up to $150,000 a year. those students would have to maintain a 2.0 grade point

average. finally, the legislature passed a bill that would distribute $2.5 billion over five years for energy efficiency projects at schools and community colleges. governor jerry brown took to twitter this afternoon to issue fter two and a half years ofget. struggle and difficult times, california's budget is balanced and sustainable into the future." the governor has two weeks to either veto items he disagreed with or sign the spending plan into law. abc7 news. >> one lawmaker was especially happy the budget passed quickly. assemblyman hernandez rushed out to get married. he had to leave before they adjourned to make his flight to southern california. he said the matter of the budget never came up when his fiancee set the date.

>> opening statements tomorrow in the trial of an alleged bay area serial killer. 72-year-old person was charged with killing four women from 1974 to 1980s. he's expected to given an opening statement to the jury tomorrow morning when representing himself. trial could last until mid-november. he faces the death penalty if convicted of killing multiple murders. as you know, today is father's day and the weather is rather cool. lisa argen is here with a preview of the accuweather forecast. >> but it's nice and sunny in most neighborhoods. here's a look at san jose. already 60 degrees. going for a high just 74. that is below average and that's the trend for the last few days of spring. we will talk about the warmup, when it's headed our way next. >> thank you, lisa. also ahead, vice president joe biden surprise stop in the south bay before he wrapped up his trip to the bay area.

sed new this morning, a solar-powered plane trying to >> knew this morning, an earthquake in mexico city, close to the capital. it was about 76 miles from the capital. vice president joe biden is back in washington this morning after a weekend bay area visit that included party fundraising and stumping for a south bay congressman. he also got to watch his grandniece receive her master's degree yesterday during ceremonies at stanford university. earlier in the day he surprised patrons and staffers at hobey's restaurant off highway 101 and moffett field. that unannounced visit was to support democratic support for a congressman who faces re-election battle. people were thrilled to see him walk in, shake hands and pose for pictures. >> my daughter said to him that her uncle calls him joey b,

which he thought was funny. we had a great talk, keep up the great work. it's amazing to meet him in person. >> biden's bay area visit was primarily to attend friday's democratic party fundraiser in san francisco. as the senate continues debate on comprehensive immigration reform, will police cal opposition stall any action? in this week's sunday exclusive, senator marco rubio discusses whether they can reach a compromise deal. 11 he says the vast majority of americans are on board to support reform, as long as the senate and house can reach a compromise on key issues like border security. >> the vast majority of americans, the vast majority of conservative republicans are prepared to support immigration reform, but only if we can ensure that we are not going to have another wave of illegal immigration in the future. >> rubio also says the only way an immigration bill will pass is if it has real provisions in it that strengthen border security.

abc7 news has learned a former chief of the san francisco police department has accepted a federal position at sfo. fred lowe left the police department department back in 2002. since then he served as the head of the tsa, the san francisco security administration, at oakland international. next month lowe will bring his experience to the same position at san francisco international airport. new this morning a solar power plane trying to fly across the u.s. has landed at dulles international just after midnight this morning after a 14 hour flight from cincinnati. it's the first bid by a dole lar plane capable of being airborne day and night without fuel to fly across the u.s. it took off from moffett field in mountain view back on may 3rd. that was the first leg. if all goes well it will complete it's final leg of the

trip to new york next month. >> missouri how do you give andrew alberts gator a physical? the answer to that is very carefully. abc7 news was granted exclusive access when al guy tort at golden gate park got his annual checkup. here is this morning's assignment 7 report. >> this albino alligator is a star, not just because he's rare but he's an attraction at golden gate park. keeping him in tip top shape is a production. >> he's a senior biologist at the academy. he explains how they do get him out of his swamp. it starts with a crane and a giant tube. >> there's a giant tube, a transport. we have lower it to in the top of the exhibit and get him into the tube. >> then a team of daring biologists climb into his home and try to gently coax him into

the tube. >> we are looking on different ways to do it. today we basically were trying to guide him in using some voice commands and also some tools to try to get him into that tube. he definitely responds to voices. in general he seems to move toward them when his trainers are there. because this is more of a stressful situation, he's not responding as well. >> it takes a couple of tries and a little prodding, but eventually claude swims into the tube. the tube is sealed and lifted out of the exhibit. then they let him out. it takes a team of biologists and just as many to wrangle him so they can tape his mouth shut. they keep a towel over his eyes to keep him calm. they measure him to see how much he's grown since his check up last july. he's a foot longer coming in at

9.5 feet. they check in to do a checkup. >> what we look for is any abnormalities, the eyes, the chest, the teeth, the limbs, the underbelly. just looking at the animal for the overall health. >> them the tape comes off and he is weighed. he checks in at 222 pounds. >> his last weight was about 190 pounds. today he looks a little on the chub by side so we might decrease his alligator chow a little bit. >> he's held overnight for observation before being put back in his swamp but the academy team said there is another successful checkup. >> we work really well together and it came out really well. >> eric thomas, abc7 news. quite the procedure there. well, two abc7 news greats were honored last night at the northern california emmys. don sanchez received the board of governor's award. it's the highest honor given to

tv news journalists. and wayne freedman was recognized with the governor's citation award which acknowledgings a career of excellence. as you know, wayne remains a very busy abc7 news reporter. don retired in september of a more than 40 years with abc7 news. congratulations, fellows. both of them are dads and they are probably out and about enjoying the cool, sunny weather. >> i would think so. along the coast it's been pretty cloudy, though. and the marine layer will influence our weather not only today but the next several days. let's say the first half the upcoming work week. live doppler 7hd shows that the low clouds and fog pulling away from parts of the coast. in fact the golden gate bridge was clear this morning but the fog is beginning to gather north and south, here, santa cruz, it's beginning to clear up. 53 downtown, 59 in oakland, 60 san jose.

half moon bay has some clouds. santa cruz 59 degrees so where it has been sunny it's warmed up a little bit. this is vollmer peak on top of our east bay hills. looking at numbers in the 60s where the sun has been shining and the winds light, relatively speaking. off the north coast, in fact, up toward marin county, we've had gusty winds, but by the delta, mid-60s. upper 50s union city and 62 los gatos. you see the camera shaking here. this is mt. tam. you can also see the marine layer. the coastal clouds will be with us throughout the day today, ocean beach, and the point. and the onshore flo will keep us cooler will you tuesday. wednesday things start to turn around once the upper level system passes to the east of us. high fire danger in the sierra nevada was the trough pushes through. we will look for warmer conditions as a ridge builds in behind this. this is a pretty shot, how nice and sunny it is from the exploratorium camera. look at the first column.

this is the averages. we should be looking at more 70s and 80s this time of year. livermore is below average today. napa should be 8 to, but mid-70s. look at oakland and fran, just in the 60s. san jose low 70s. so anywhere from three to seven degrees below average today. in fact we are going to drop the numbers a couple more degrees in our inland locations tomorrow, into tuesday, and then we will begin to recover. so the culprit is this. an upper level low that sits off the coast. as it continues to sit here, we will get that stronger onshore push. but it does move on through on tuesday. that's going to allow for still not only the cool conditions, but here's a look at how cool. our east bay valleys, you will really feel it. we are looking at 80 today, 79 tomorrow and look what happens when the system begins to push through. even cooler. it will disrupt the marine layer so we are looking at low 70s and then the low recovery into the weekend. in the south bay this afternoon, plenty of sunshine already.

>> welcome back, everyone. happy father's day. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, it's looking nice and sunny all around the bay with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. so it's been clear. the marine layer than compressed. but we do have fog half moon bay, 672 degrees. 61 with sunshine in santa cruz. in the east bay today we will have more sun, but the winds are going to keep it a little bit cool, staying in the 60s from the low to upper 60s today at our coast. we will have some fog, mid-50s to the lower 60s and a strong onshore wind. inland more 70s than 80s today. i'll detail that for you and tell you how long the cooler

weather sticks around in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. happening now the 36th annual san francisco marathon is coming to a close. there are still runners on the streets of san francisco. this year there is added security in place following the attacks in boston. abc7 news reporter nick smith joins us live from the finish line with more on that security. nick, also the winner? >> absolutely, carolyn. this is the first time that this hear has been completely closed off. i'm here at fulsom street at the embarcadero. this point here all the way up to mission street and completely blocked off and you have to go through a security point. if you look to my right you see the security checkpoint i'm talking about. there are guys who will actually go through your bags and if you have something like a stroller, that we will see come through, they have to check the stroller too. they are checking bags and strollers and all of this is because they want to make sure no unauthorized items make it on

show the civic events, the races are so important and we can do it well and we can do it safely. >> now, security remains tight. there were uniformed and k9 officers moving through the crowd. now if you come back here with me live you can see the security procedures remain in place. even though the race itself has drawn to a close, they will actually end it all after six hours after the event started. that's when you can no longer have an official time. i have to tell you, carolyn, one of the things we noticed overall, the people out here and the crowd, those who participated, those who came out to support others, everyone kept an eye out for things around them. but there have been no incidents. we did speak with a member of the san francisco police department. there have been no incident reported. for the most part the crowd has just been out here enjoying the sunshine and supporting their loved ones as they competed in the marathon. on the embarcadero, nick smith, abc7 news. >> thank you, nick. congratulations to anna and the male winner who was from fronts.

a a group in the east bay has raised money to help sexually exploited children recover from that trauma. the organization "missy" hosted their second annual inspire change gala at the rotunda in oakland. you see ab7 news reporter traffic reporter lela there. it featured a guest speaker, silent auction and plus dinner and dancing. new york city mayor michael bloomberg will be the commencement speaker at the at graduation ceremonies at stanford. stanford's president said bloomberg's accomplishments in the business and being a mayor fall in line with the university's entrepreneurial spirit. right there you see video of bloomberg meeting with san francisco mayor ed lee last week. they plan to co-host a technology summit this year in new york. some of our best creativity happens when we are young and a group at stanford thinks we need to do something about that. they want to give teenagers the tools they need to become inventors. johnathan bloom spent some time

[laughter] >> it's no laughing matter. trial and error is a great way to learn. >> thank you very much. >> that's why these high-schoolers are learning not in a classroom but in a state of the art product design lab at stanford with things like 3d printers and laser cutters. >> they actually have to measure and get the measurements right. a lot of them tell us this is the first time that math was useful. >> that's the professor, head of an eight week program stanford calls makers in residence. it teaches science and math by teaching teenagers to invent things and build them. from a shirt that lights your way home to a pillow that gets to you class on time. >> these will vibrate your head when you are asleep and wake you up. >> the teens are learning to solve problems and learning about themselves. >> i didn't think that i could

program, but i was able to program the system. >> the program is meant to empower kids but also has another goal, to empower schools and teachers by offering them a completely new way to teach math and science and proving that it works. >> unfortunately our public schools are more and more doing testing and kind learning and all kinds of things like that that help prepare kids for the jobs of the 19th century. >> but in the 21st century he argues this style of learning should be anywhere and stanford is setting out to make it happening, building fab labs like this one, in public high schools. he likes what he sees. >> it is surprising to me and it's inspiring. >> even more inspiring is hearing the teenagers sum up their 8 weeks here. >> you get to try new things and use technology in a way that allows you to help other people and i think that's a pretty powerful message, especially for girls. >> at stanford, johnathan bloom, abc7 news. we have an exciting new and improved abc7 news app to tell you about.

independently owned black bookstore in the country is in threat of eviction. they are the subject of a bad economy and a bad business decision. here's other look at the last ditch effort to save it. >> marcus book is an icon in the black community. the victorup once housed jazz greats back in the day. when the fillmore neighborhood was bull dosed to make way for urban renewal, this building was spared. >> we are in the fight of our lives in this city to hold on to just even a bit of our culture. >> supervisor is among those fight to go save marcus books. a bad business loan during the bad and he eventually led to bankruptcy proceedings. now the new owners have ordered a june 18th eviction. the family that founded marcus back in 1960 and lives upstairs is hoping for a change of heart.

>> i think they are kind enough to understand how important it is to the community right now. >> a neighborhood health agency, west side community services, is offering to buy back the building from the new owners above their purchase price and then return the space to the bookstore. the attorney for the new on the other hander says we are not providing comment on this ongoing matter. but customers are talking. >> with the exodus of african americans from this city, for me this is another example of the void. >> mayor ed lee said he will reach out. >> we will have to take a look at all the options that are available. i think they have been successful enough business that we would make every effort to do so. >> marcus has hosted thousands of writers over the year. now the family and community hope that through a last-minute miracle, they will have more writers visiting here in the

in fact the west winds, up to 20 miles an hour, will usher in a cooler air mass. here's a look at the golden gate bridge. see the fog. evidence of that. a 3 cool degrees in san francisco, 59 oakland and low 60s in mountain view. 60 san jose. look at that half moon bay. 52 degrees. ceiling at about 500 feet. the sun is coming out in santa cruz at 62 degrees. so here's our sutro camera. you see the fog floating about. that's going to be the case throughout the day today. we will see this marine layer stay anywhere from around 1500 feet to 2,000 feet overnight until a weak weather system kind of sweeps it on out of here and builds us some warmer temperatures. 61 livermore. mid-60s by the delta. west wind at 18. only in the 80s there. can you see the winds, up to 25 winds. a little bit of fog and haze. cooler temperatures through tuesday, then we will look for warmer weather by the end of the

week. how about thursday? the summer solstice. we usher in the summer season and we will bring in warmer temperatures. so the 50s at the coast. we will see a little bit of sunshine but we will keep it mostly cloudy there. 60s from san francisco, even oakland and you have to go way far north and east to get into the 8 tos. only in the 70s for the santa clara valley. so cooler than average. we should be about 80 trees san jose, 81 in santa rosa, and it's all due to the upper level system that continues to spin to the north and west of us. it will sit here for another day. on tuesday it will slide across the state. and not only it bring the continued cool conditions but high fire danger for the sierra nevada. the look ahead shows you we aren't done with the cool weather yet. in san jose, forecasted high tomorrow, similar to today. mid-70s. then you will notice upper 60s. a slow recovery, but we are back into the 80s for the first weekend of summer. you have to get into the sacramento valley for the low 90s in sacramento.
