firefighters got on scene to make quick work of the flames, you can still see crews there, at the same time, the house fire there, the portion of the roof burned as you see there. it is not known if the fires are related. so far, no reports of injuries or a cause for either of the fires. now to developing news, the large gas leak causing evacuations for thousands in san francisco. the leak started at about 12:30 this afternoon, at fourth and folsom streets, and prompted evacuations at yerba and moscone centers. >> reporter: yes, when we first arrived here we could smell gas two blocks away from where the leak was, fourth was closed from mission down to howard. now opened again. but folsom is still closed from third to fifth. and we're now told that the pg&e crews have capped the leaking gas line that caused so many problems for the past few hours.

the gas leak emptied out the moscone center and the area around fourth and folsom street. police blocked off a one-block area. the moscone center was hosting a medical convention when the alarm sounded around the building. they thought there was an attack. >> just below the service, everybody is edgy because of stuff like boston, particularly when you're in a group. i mean, there are 10,000 people at the convention. >> reporter: this man says there was not a panic exit from the auditorium. >> everybody was pretty calm when the alarms went off, everybody walked to the escalators and got out of there, it was pretty simple. >> reporter: this man was just leaving his job at the moscone when he smelled gas. >> you guys smell that? we should be gone, off this block as far as i'm concerned. the gas leak, if it blew, who knows how many blocks it could take out? >> reporter: with were also

concerned at the center. >> we evacuated people at the moscone center, the museum of modern art and apartment buildings, there, as well. and basically all the people affected were asked to go to the church where the red cross was helping. >> they were forced to move until the danger had passed. police say a private crew had hit the gas there. it was the only way to get through the traffic that was snarled for hours, the police capped the line, now they're in the area making sure there is no gas collecting inside, posing any type of danger. and also, the police are asking all drivers to stay away from this area. it is still a traffic problem, they don't know when the streets will be opened again, they ask people to avoid the area, as soon as possible. >> all right, tomas, thank you so much. a young boy in oakland shot while sleeping in his bed

overnight. police say at 5:00 this evening, the police were shot. they believe it was a drive by, seven people were home at the time. the boy was the only one hit. the bullet struck him in the shoulder. he was expected to make a full recovery after being taken to the hospital. >> we were sleeping, i heard multiple gunshots. so i was really scared so i snuck under the blanket. my brother woke up, the one who got shot. he woke up and felt like why his arm was so weird. we saw blood all over the bed, then we knew he got shot. >> reporter: police are not sure who was the intended target of the gunshot. the family says the home has been shot at before. police are still looking for suspects. and fremont police shot and killed a mentally ill man who shot and killed two of his family members. a woman called saying her 53-year-old son was throwing around furniture and attacking the door with a knife.

when police arrived, the man confronted them. >> two of our officers ended up shooting the suspect. they proceeded to give medical aid, cpr, fremont fire responded. and subsequently, declared the male deceased. >> the officers are on paid administrative leave which is on department family. the family members who were injured by the man are expected to live. and friends and neighbors gathering inside a vallejo home where an 18-year-old man was shot to death. police investigate d the shootig that happened at a child's birthday party. a pit bull was struck by gunfire and was taken to a vet for treatment. police are searching for at least two suspects. an abilone diver drowned off the waters in northern california. this is the fifth death in two months, the 61 yield man was pulled from the water off salt

point state park. this is the third death of an abilone diver at the park, two other deaths there have been reported since late april, one at shell beach, another off fort bragg in mendocino county. and 79-year-old joseph naso is charged with killing women in yuba, marin, and contra costa counties, he couldçó face the death penalty if convicted of the murders. and oakland police asking for help in the search of a man who has dementia. 64-year-old james moten walked away from the home. he is 5'2", 140 pounds, and has a beard. anyone who may have seen him

should contact oakland police. and members of occupy the farm are planning a vigil in san francisco at dusk to honor trees being removed for a housing project. the candlelight vigil is planned at the former site of the farm. work crews are repairing damage made to a fence by the occupier s on friday. activists want to preserve the area as an open face, on friday, they tossed eggs during a protest, one person was arrested. police are a presence at the site. and the u.s. supreme court could decide on two important same-sex marriage cases tomorrow. if the supreme court upholds the decision, the case could begin again in california, justices could use the case regarding others cases, the other is the defense of marriage act, the federal law that defines marriage between a man and woman, which prevents gay

couples from receiving benefits. and this morning, thousands of runners involved in the marathon, thousands made their way down the embarcadero, golden gate bridge was crowded with runners coming and going. and although the weather was great, there were different rules primarily because of the boston marathon tragedy. security was much tighter than in the past, runners were checked out early and the size of backpacks runners could carry was also severely restricted. and to the winner, a french phd student was the first to cross the official line, with a time of 2 hours, 25 minutes and 14 seconds. >> we really wanted to come here, the race was really, really tough, i'm very glad to have won it. >> placing ninth overall was the marathon's top female finisher, the bay area's own anne bretin,
