making news in america this morning, president obama arrives in northern ireland for the g-8 summit this morning. tops on the agenda, the the topic of syrian unrest and so is iran meeting with russia's president. and it's going to be an anxious day for hundreds of people in colorado as they head back to discover what's left of their homes. the latest on what is now being called the most destructive wildfire in colorado's history. also this morning -- >> i told him he messed with the wrong -- witch. >> yes, he did. how this woman fought the fight of her life to save her kids from a violent carjacking. plus, a new miss usa is crowned, but it's a runner-up making headlines this morning for a verbal fumble of sorts.

and good monday morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson sitting in today for john muller. >> welcome back. >> thank you. good to be back. >> one day only. >> one-night stand. >> that's okay. and i'm diana perez. federal agents are ready to join the investigation into the cause of that deadly colorado fire. >> the 22-square-mile black forest fire is now 65% contained. that's the good news, but the area is still considered a crime scene until the cause can be determined. abc's devin dwyer is joining us now with the very latest. hi, devin. >> reporter: good morning, rob and diana. some 20,000 people are still evacuated because of the fires. they've charred thousands of acres just east of the u.s. air force academy and rattled a whole lot of nerves. the battle against colorado's worst wildfire has turned a corner. steady rain sunday gave a boost to firefighters hunting for hot spots near colorado springs, but authorities say the fight is not over. >> mop-up smokes, search and destroy, find them where you can, maintain the perimeter, stay alert. >> reporter: the black forest

fire fueled by bone-dry conditions has taken a devastating toll. two people are dead. nearly 500 homes burnt to their foundations. evacuees lined up outside the fire zone this weekend anxious to see if their homes survived. >> my nerves have been on edge for three days. and that's probably not going to change until they say, hey, it's 100% contained. >> reporter: even as the flames subside, police are keeping the area on lockdown, a move that has caused some tempers to flare. >> all of us are getting treated like criminals. we can't come out. if we come out, we can't go back in. >> we have a crime scene in there. we have fire in there. we have downed power lines in there. we have trees falling each time there is a gust of wind. >> reporter: residents of areas that have re-opened describe a gut-wrenching loss. john poss, whose daughter lost her home, says it will be a painful road to recovery. >> to people that lost their homes, they're going to hit bottom again when they see theirs for the first time, which probably will be this week. >> reporter: some good news. authorities say they've accounted for all missing persons and that no one else died in the blaze.

now, investigators are treating the entire crime -- fire zone as a crime scene, and they've asked for federal agents to come in and help sift through the ash for clues about who may have caused it. rob and diana. >> all right. devin dwyer in washington for us this morning, thank you. and new this morning, president obama participating today in a summit with the leaders of the world's leading industrial nations. he arrived a short time ago for the gathering along with the first lady and daughter malia. high on the agenda, as you can imagine, is the international response to syria's ongoing civil war. also late today, mr. obama will meet one-on-one with the russian president, vladimir putin. also this morning, revelations by nsa whistle-blower edward snowden are certain to come up at that summit. this morning's "guardian" newspaper reveals that the british eavesdropping agency hacked into the phone and e-mail of foreign diplomats. the information is based on documents that have been provided by snowden. former vice president dick cheney says he's worried about what other bombshells snowden may have to drop.

the former intelligence analyst is still believed to be hiding somewhere in hong kong. here's abc's bob woodruff. >> reporter: it has been a week since edward snowden was last seen here in hong kong, nowhere on the streets of one of the most densely populated places in the world. harsh words from the former vice president. concern that snowden's leaks of classified documents could weaken america's defense. >> i think he's a traitor. if we had had this before 9/11 and had been able to use that program, that capability, we might well have been able to prevent 9/11. >> reporter: the national security agency stepped up its defense saying their intelligence gathering prevented potential attacks in more than 20 countries insisting that they only investigated 300 phone numbers last year. but whether these programs are truly effective is still being questioned. >> i don't think collecting millions and millions of americans' phone calls is making us any safer, and i think it's ultimately perhaps a violation of the fourth amendment. >> reporter: all still wondering

if snowden will emerge again to defend the morality of his actions. >> he needs to look an american jury in the eye and explain why he has put american lives in danger. >> reporter: although there are some people here in hong kong that do consider snowden to be a traitor, according to a new poll, twice as many think of him as a hero, and either way, they insist that their government should not send him back to the united states. bob woodruff, abc news, hong kong. in turkey, riot police are holding back protesters after uprooting them from a square in istanbul. officers unleashed tear gas, even water cannons on the anti-government demonstrators who had refused to disperse for two weeks. a few miles away, the prime minister addressed hundreds of thousands of supporters saying the protesters are a minority and do not represent turkey. also, south africa's current president is sharing good news about nelson mandela saying doctors are seeing sustained improvement. mandela is being treated for a

reoccurring lung infection and remains in the hospital in serious condition. president jacob zuma says the 94-year-old mandela continues to engage with his family. it was a somber father's day in connecticut as police scaled back the search for a missing father of two. eyewitnesses last saw 33-year-old eric langlois struggling in a lake on tuesday. he was apparently trying to retrieve his mountain bike which had fallen into the water. he was riding there just the day before, but six days of searching for the photographer has come up empty. and the parents of a missing university of chicago student are asking for help in finding their son. austin hudson-lapore was last seen wednesday after his final exam. the 20-year-old biochemistry major went for a walk to see an incoming storm. he left behind his wallet and his cell phone. also some pretty frightening moments for passengers aboard a duck boat in liverpool, england. more than 30 people had to be rescued when the tour bus sank. nearby barges sailed in to help as passengers tried to swim back to shore.

several people were taken to the hospital with shock, but the good news, everyone was released. a similar incident happened just a few months ago, in fact, but no one was aboard that particular boat. time now for a look at the weather. lots of rain across the nation today from the east coast all the way into the plains, and there will be some severe storms in that region today. rain also around the great lakes and in the pacific northwest. >> temperatures rise to 72 in seattle. 76 in portland. 107 degrees, whew, of dry heat there in phoenix. it'll be 90 and presumably humid in new orleans, always a safe bet. and high to mid-80s from bostimore -- bostimore? from baltimore to boston. i'm a little rusty. >> we forgive you. >> it's early. >> yeah, 23 more minutes. it's okay. still to come, hundreds of thousands of suvs are being recalled because they could catch fire. we're going to tell you which ones are affected. also ahead, russia's president is embroiled in an international incident involving of all things a super bowl ring. plus, all aboard the crazy

. general motors is recalling nearly 200,000 suvs because a module in the driver's door can catch fire. here's a list of the vehicles that are affected, the 2006 and 2007 chevy trailblazer, gmc envoy, the buick rainier, the saab 9-7x and the isuzu ascender. but it only affects vehicles sold or registered in 20 snowbelt states, and here's how serious this problem is. the fires can happen even when the vehicles aren't being used. so gm is advising people with those vehicles to park outside.

and the national debate over gun control helped smith & wesson set a record for sales. the gunmaker says it sold $588 million worth of weapons last year. that's up 43% over the year before. now, consumers stocked up on guns apparently worried that new laws might restrict their purchase abilities. the team behind a solar plane's cross-country flight has one more leg to go before declaring victory. after a 14-hour flight from cincinnati, the plane landed early this morning at dulles airport near washington, d.c. it's the first ever bid by a solar plane crew to fly across the u.s. without fuel. the final leg of the journey from dulles to the big apple is set for early next month. and new yorkers may soon have yet another new rule to follow thanks to mayor michael bloomberg. bloomberg now reportedly wants residents to separate their food scraps for composting. yep, "the new york times" says the city plans to hire a composting plant to handle

100,000 tons of food waste every year. the program will start off as voluntary, but it is expected to become mandatory in a few years. and a remarkable record from the music world to report. ozzy osbourne and his black sabbath bandmates are back on top of the british album charts with their record entitled "13." now, it's been 43 years since the band last topped britain's album charts. by the way, the longest ever gap between albums in the uk. >> 43 years. >> that's a long time. >> that's a streak. that is definitely a streak. the real record is ozzy is still alive. god bless him. and a huge weekend at the box office for "man of steel." the superman remake took in 125 million bucks in its first weekend. in second place, "this is the end," that raunchy star-packed comedy that got great reviews that i'm still dying to see, and

at least 46 people were shot in that city between saturday afternoon and yesterday. at least seven of them died, either at the scene or at the hospital. the youngest victim was just 16 years old. police shot and killed a 24-year-old man who allegedly raised a handgun in their direction. iran's newly elected president is making it clear that his country's economic problems cannot be solved overnight. during his campaign, hasan rowhani promised more freedom and better relations with the rest of the world. however, israeli leaders are warning the international community not to ease sanctions against iran. they say the country's supreme leader still has the final say on their nuclear program. also, the white house says it is open to high-level nuclear talks proposed by north korea but with conditions. washington says pyongyang will first has to show it will comply with u.n. security council resolutions, but the surprise invitation from the north says there will be no preconditions nor demands to give up its nuclear assets unless the u.s. does the same. and now to the vatican where hundreds of bikers found

themselves in hog heaven. the tattooed, leather-clad harley-davidson riders were celebrating the 110th anniversary of the harley in rome yesterday. well, pope francis blessed the bikers in st. peter's square even though their engines were still roaring when he began the open air mass. >> the pope does it all. >> yes, he does. russia's president is denying reports that he stole a super bowl ring from new england patriots owner robert kraft, but vladimir putin says he'd be willing to buy kraft another ring as a gift. abc's kirit radia reports on the simmering international dispute. >> reporter: vladimir putin is a lot of things, president of russia, animal lover, judo master, thrill seeker. what he's not, the kremlin says, is a thief. putin's aides are denying he stole a diamond-encrusted super bowl ring from new england patriots owner robert kraft. the two met in 2005. both sides agree that kraft showed him his super bowl bling

reportedly worth over $25,000. they also agree that putin left with it. kraft issued a statement at the time saying he gave putin the ring as a sign of friendship with the russian people, but on thursday kraft revealed what he said is the real truth. he says he handed putin the ring to look at and remembers the former kgb spy saying, "i could kill someone with this ring," and then according to kraft, the russian president pocketed it, all 4.94 carats, all 124 diamonds. kraft says he called it a gift only after pressure from the white house. the kremlin is pushing back. an aide to the president told abc news the ring was definitely a gift calling kraft's claims "weird." it isn't quite the cold war, but somewhere in the kremlin behind me is a super bowl ring, and the only thing that's clear is that it isn't coming back. kirit radia, abc news, moscow. well, an englishman is the

abc 7 news starts right now with live, breaking news. at 4:28 this morning, we have breaking news. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. in san jose, a deadly overnight accident could mean commute trouble at a busy intersection. matt keller is live at hillsdale and foxworthy in san jose. matt, we see the police are still there. >> reporter: yes, they are still here, the road is still blocked off. we want to be careful here, the victim of the fatal accident still here on the scene until the coroner can arrive. i do want my photographer to zoom in here. and you can see how much damage was done. now, you can see the toyota with the yellow tape here is the car that slammed into the parked cars on foxworthy avenue. the roof is off, firefighters had to tear it off when they arrived on the scene to get the passenger out. he died on the scene. the driver was taken to the hospital with relatively minor injuries. >> after the victim was

extracted out of the vehicle, officers found several cans of beer inside the vehicle. we're going to check when our traffic enforcement unit gets here, they'll determine whether or not any open containers or closed. we're not sure at this time. >> reporter: police believe the men were coming home from work. they were both wearing uniforms. investigators say the car was most likely speeding around on pearl avenue past hillsdale where it turns into foxworthy avenue and slammed into parked cars. five had major damage. we're less than a half mile away from capital expressway, the chevy dealership extends across the street from the accident. we're told there will be a couple more hours until this investigation is complete. the traffic enforcement unit on the scene. the coroner expected within the hour. when this is cleared up, foxworthy avenue will be opened up again to traffic in south san jose. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you so much. we'll be checking in with leyla on that and also weather. good morning, everyone.

4:29 in for mike nicco, live doppler radar 7-hd radar. pretty dry conditions. we are going to be seeing cooler temperatures for today. here's a look from our mt. tam cam looking to the bay bridge. you can see a little bit of cloud cover there as it makes its way over towards the bay area. inland, we are going to be a spread of 74 to 80 degrees at the bay, 66 to 74 along the coast. still seeing patchy fog and cloud cover, and those temperatures going to remain in the upper 60s and the mid 50s. and we'll have more on your accu weather seven-day forecast. now let's see what's happening in traffic. all right. we do have some construction and we also have a motorcycle crash, as we take it over to the san mateo bridge, we are seeing this motorcycle crash, westbound 92. and it appears that one motorcyclist has been injured. it sounds like a car ran them off the road. we're looking at pretty clear conditions, other than that, as we make it over the san mateo bridge. also constructi
