good tuesday morning. we begin with a revealing new interview with the president released overnight >> that's right. one of the topics the government's surveillance scandal. as the source of those leaks releases more embarrassing details. >> these coming out of ireland where the president is meeting with world leaders. mary bruce is there live but we begin with devin dwyer in washington. good morning, devin. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the debate over government spy programs has gone split screen as both the president and the nsa leaker face off in competing interviews. the latest leak of government secrets has stunned the g-8 summit. edward snowden revealed to "the guardian" that the british government spied on diplomatic targets from all nations and their smartphones at a meetin meetingsing of world leaders in 2009. the u.s. spied too listening in on the russian president. president obama said the leaks must stop. >> the case has been referred to the doj for criminal

investigation. >> and possible extradition. >> possible extradition. i will leave it up to them the president said secret programs do not target everyday americans saying some counterterrorism efforts must remain classified. >> we could not have carried out bin laden raid. i think everybody understands that. >> in a new pew poll about as many americans disapprove of the nsa surveillance programs as approve. despite their role in the fight against terrorism. snowden, who is still hiding in hong kong says he's determined to review the full extent of government spying. he wrote "the government is not going to be able to cover this up by jailing or murdering me." snowden's father for the first time made an emotional plea on fox news for his son to stand down. >> i just asked that you measure what you're going to do and not release any more information. >> now, u.s. officials have been most concerned that edward

sending weapons to syrian rebels is not enough. >> if you haven't been in the situation room poring through intelligence and meeting directly with our military folks and asking what are all our options and examining what are all the consequences, unless you've been involved in those conversations, then it's kind of hard for you to understand the complexities of the situation and how we have to not rush into one more war in the middle east. >> reporter: yesterday president obama and russian leader vladimir putin agreed that the bloodshed must stop and called for renewed negotiations. but that's where their agreement ends. [ speaking a foreign language ] >> translator: our opinions do not coincide. >> reporter: russia remains committed to arming assad's regime. the white house has concluded assad used chemical weapons but

russia is scoffing at the american evidence. >> we've got serious interests there and not only humanitarian interests, we can't have a situation of ongoing chaos in a major country that borders a country like jordan which in turn borders israel. >> reporter: while the president is busy with meeting the first family is exploring their irish roots and combed through archives and saw the birth record of the president's great, great, great grandfather from ireland. they also reunited with a distant irish cousin. >> reporter: later today the president travels to germany where tomorrow he'll meet with the president and chancellor and dlifr a speech at the brandenburg gate. a major milestone in the long war in afghanistan. the security of the country is now in the hands of the afghan national police and military. the handover from international forces was made official today

during ceremonies in kabul. a bomb went off just as the handover was taking place. the latest air scare. a passenger on a united flight from hong kong to newark stood up about nine hours into the flight and started ranting about the cia, national security and nsa whistle-blower edward snowden. several other passengers and flight attendant took immediate action. they tackled the disruptive man and handcuffed him for the rest of the flight. >> he was afraid of being poisoned. he saw everybody as a threat. he thought everybody was working for the fbi, the cia. there was no time to understand or think. we needed to restrain him. >> the man was as you see there escorted off the plane by the fbi and taken to the hospital for evaluation. this is now the third incident since friday that involved threatening or frightening passengers. women may be able to start training as army rangers by mid-2015 and as navy s.e.a.l.s a year later under a new pentagon plan. the plan being made public today

calls for men and women to meet the same mental and physical standards for certain front line positions across all branches of the military. the chairman of the joint chiefs has said there is a link between sexual assaults in the military and the ban on women in front lines. >> investigators now believe colorado's most destructive wildfire ever was human caused. but they still don't know exactly how it started. the fire is now 75% contained after destroying 500 homes. thousands of people have been allowed to return to their neighborhoods but residents of the most damaged areas are still being kept out. and the wildfire in northern california has forced the evacuation of at least 150 homes. more than 700 firefighters have been battling that blaze near yosemite national park since sunday. that one is only 15% contained. in addition to the hot, dry weather steep terrain and narrow access roads are making it extra difficult to fight this fire. a look at the weather across the nation, windy conditions in those fire zones could fan those flames today. rain and stormy conditions

stretching from the east coast all the way to the rockies. it is clear and dry around the great lakes, and on the northern plains. it'll be in the 70s in that region. much w5r78er down south, miami, dallas, new orleans all reaching to the 90s. phoenix up to 106 and be in the high 60s in the pacific northwest. all right, coming up, buttons are back. the car company that is going retro with its controls. also ahead the showdown between the government and chryslerment the effort to recall jeeps linked to deadly fires and a major deadline today. going nowhere fast with no captain at the helm this boat has a mind of its own.

welcome back. investors will be closely watching today as the federal reserve kicks off a two-day meeting. traders will be trying to figure out whether the fed will cut back on some of the incentives that have helped stimulate the economy. last month chairman ben bernanke said that the fed might start dialing back on bond buying. investors will be hoping to hear when this might happen and what effect it could have on rates. major airlines have improved their customer satisfaction ratings for the second year in a row. and just like last year, jetblue came out on top followed by southwest. even with the improvements, though, airlines still are low rated when compared to other industries. air carriers are at the bottom along with cable tv and internet providers. we're expecting to learn more today about why chrysler is refusing to recall nearly 3 million jeeps over safety concerns. until now the company provided only a three-page paper explaining the refusal but today is the deadline fora more comprehensive response. government experts claim the

rear mounted fuel tanks on the suvs can cause deadly fires in a collision. and ford is going back to the basics, at least when it comes to the car radio. after years of complaint, ford says it will return to offering low-tech tuning knobs and buttons on its entertainment system. many customers say they're unhappy with new touch screens and voice recognition controls. just too confusing. >> i'm all about the knobs. i like it. i like that. a sign of the times this morning, the oxford dictionary has just legitimized the word "tweet." the official meaning, to make a posting on certainly networking service twitter. a word usually has to be around for ten years before it's added to oxford, but they say tweet is catching on. >> you think? >> you think? it's catching on. i think it's going to stick around. >> a little bit. when we come back, new developments overnight on the shocking nigella lawson case. police are now responding to a photo that shows the celeb chef's husband appearing to choke her. also ahead, rescue at 9,000 feet. the race to get two teens down from a mountain.

at low pay, and they were allegedly threatened if they told anyone what was going on. >> employees were threatened when they complained, which was rare, with the threat of deportation, with the threat of job loss. it was a terrible environment for these employees, and they were ruthlessly exploited. >> so far nine owners and managers from pakistan and the philippines are under arrest for running what the feds call modern-day plantations. a former hit man will be back on the stand today in the trial of accused boston mob boss james "whitey" bulger. 72-year-old john martorano told jurors yesterday that bulger was intimately involved in his life of crime, and he tied bulger to a string of murders. years ago martorano admitted killing 20 people in exchange for his testimony against bulger and a reduced prison sentence. he was released six years ago. martorano admitted to being heartbroken when he learned that bulger had become an fbi informant.

federal agents were in a field in michigan carrying out a search for the body of former teamsters union boss jimmy hoffa. the dig took place about 25 miles north of detroit, a land located near property once owned by suspected mobsters. no word on whether any evidence was found. hoffa, by the way, went missing back in 1975. nigella lawson's husband has answered police questions for five hours over a dramatic argument captured on camera. billionaire charles saatchi had tried to characterize the moment as a, quote, playful tiff saying he was holding lawson's neck but not gripping it. now saatchi has been given what's called a caution under british law. that is a formal warning given to someone who admits a minor offense. saatchi confirms that lawson and the children have left home until things settle down. and now to a dramatic rescue from the mountains near lake tahoe. two teenagers got trapped on a ridge 9,000 feet above the valley's floor. an emergency helicopter was called in. the crew had to lower a harness for the teens to put around
