miss utah was a good sport. >> she really is. good wednesday morning, everyone. there's new questions this morning about whether or not we're safer because of programs like the nsa surveillance of phone calls and e-mails. >> for the first time, officials are revealing a plot that targeted the new york stock exchange and dozens of others that were stopped because of those programs. >> devin dwyer is joining us from washington with more on all of this. good morning devin. >> reporter: good morning. u.s. officials are on an all-out blitz to educate the public about these programs and to trust that they won't be abused. it was an al qaeda plat to stop the u.s. economy. a plot on the new york stock exchange. >> these tools have helped us. >> reporter: the fbi said that intercepted e-mail from an al qaeda leader in yemen led to this man and two other americans. they were in the initial stages

of planning their attack, seven years after 9/11. >> the fbi disrupted and arrested these individuals. >> reporter: the newly-declassifieied case is 1 50 terror plots that the fbi says could not be disrupted bout the nsa spying programs. the director defended the program against criticism that they violate americans' privacy. >> i would rather be here today debating this point, than try to explain how we failed to prevent another 9/11. >> reporter: civil liberties groups say the government has gone too far and many of the still classified plots could likely have been caught another way. >> the question is not simply whether plots were disrupted. but whether to disrupt those plots we need to engage in dragnet surveillance. >> reporter: top lawmakers disagree. >> the reason we have that is to find a needle in a haystack. you can't find the needle unless

a haystack is there. >> reporter: google and other internet companies are challenging this in court. they want to see how much data is received and how customers are affected. >> did we learn more about how edward snowden obtained the secrets and set this in motion? >> reporter: officials are revealing that he was being trained as an analyst as the nsa threat operation center. he had access to a web forum where the documents were readily available. the nsa is reviewing its procedures to see if too much critical information is too easily accessbling. >> devin dwyer in washington for us this morning. thank you. and history is being made tomorrow as the u.s. and the taliban sit down for peace talks in the middle eastern nation of qatar. the taliban pledged not to use afghanistan as a base to threaten other countries. ahead of the diplomatic efforts, the taliban today claimed responsibility for killing four u.s. service members at bagram air base. a another problem for the

boeing dreamliner. the boeing 787 forced to make an emergency landing in seattle. the flight was en route from denver to tokyo when the problem developed yesterday afternoon. the dreamliners had to be grounded earlier this year. newly released video this morning. police here in new york are looking for help in solving an attack on a times square military recruiting station five years ago. new video, the suspected bomber riding a blue bicycle was released, along with a $65,000 reward in an effort to generate leads. authorities say the bomb was built with an ammunition commonly found on battlefields. president obama topping off his european visit with a big speech in berlin today. but he's not getting the rock star reception he received five years ago when he was a senator. abc's mary bruce is traveling with the president. >> reporter: president obama will give a speech at the

brandenburg gate. the gate famed for statements is a symbol of berlin's reunification. kennedy gave his remarks facing west. today, president obama will face the opposite side. the president has visited this city before in what has become one of the most famous images of his first campaign, he addressed a crowd of 200,000 people here in 2008. that enthusiasm will be hard for him to match today. then-senator obama tried to give that speech at the brandenburg gate but was denied. the germans said it was an honor reserved for sitting presidents. today, well into his second term, president obama will finally have his chance. mary bruce, abc news, traveling with the president in berlin. a largely symbolic move, the house has voted to ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. critics call it another example of the republican war on women.

the legislation has no chance to pass, now. the senate and the president said he would veto this bill. the american medical association has recognized obesity as a disease. experts say doctors may now pay more attention to obesity and other diseases that are linked to it. and insurers may be more inclined to pay for treatment. a tragic passing to report this morning. michael hastings has died in a car crash in los angeles. hastings was 33. he was best known for the "rolling stone" magazine story that led to the resignation of stanley mcchrystal. winds approaching 100 miles per hour hit the denver airport yesterday, spawning a tornado that sent passengers scrambling for cover. thousands of people took shelter in bathrooms, stairwells and other safe spots they could

chrysler now complying with the government ordered to recall nearly 3 million older model jeeps. at issue is the placement of the gas tank. 51 people have died in fires sparked with rear-end crashes. chrysler insists there's no defect. but will install a trailer hitch on affected jeeps, which it says will help absorb impacts. the dow posted its third triple-digit surge of the week yesterday. closing up. the rally may be premature. today, we'll hear whether the federal reserve will keep interest rates low at record lows and continue its $85 billion a month economic stimulus plan. the nations of 18 cities to keep consumers from buying their products with food stamps. the mayors say it is time to rethink using subsidies for

sugary drinks in the fight against the obesity. but the american beverage association is fighting back, saying obesity affects americans at all income levels. plastic bags may disappear from stores in los angeles. the city council has voted to outlaw the bags. if the mayor agrees, l.a. would become the nation's largest city to ban the plastic bag. two of america's biggest fast food chains are launching plans to lure back calorie-conscious customers. starbucks is going to post its calories of beverages. and taco bell is feeching a new menu of entrees under 450 tallries. as well as testing out more zero calorie beverages. they're crowding out the doughnuts at dunkin' donuts. >> time to make the doughnuts. >> love that commercial. who can forget that famous

cruelty that it is hard to comprehend. >> police found out about the woman's plight when he got caught shoplifting a candy bar while grocery shopping for that family. mother and daughter are said to be doing well. police near boston have searched the home of a star nfl player. they spent hours with aaron hernandez. they descended on his mansion after the body of a 27-year-old man described as an associate of hernandez was found less than a mile away. hernandez is not believed to be a suspect. but a car linked to the case was rented in hernandez's name. more than three dozen prospective jurors will face more questioning in the george zimmerman murder trial in florida today. attorneys have to whittle down the pool to six people who will ultimately decide zimmerman's fate for the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. of the prospective jury members, 27 are white, 7 are block, 3 are hispanic and 3 are biracial.

westbound highway 4 right at hillcrest avenue. it is blocking one lane. it's pretty early for any of the congestion in that area. some construction on golden gate 101 and lake street. live look at the maze towards 580, eastbound 5, headlights not too bad out there. developing news in san francisco right now. two people have been shot, both victims, a young man and young woman showed up at san francisco general hospital overnight at an 11:30. police say the injuries were superficial and they were treated and released. victims told officers they had been shot in the bay view district. police went to the scene harbor and northridge roads but no evidence of a shooting. >> eric: the story you saw first right here. city of san jose suing major league baseball.
