currently wind conditions are pretty calm in most places. gusts up to 23 miles per hour at half moon bay. currently taking a look from our roof cam toward the bay bridge gorgeous shot there. we do have temperatures in the mid to low 50s. i'll have your full forecast coming up in just a bit. right now, our traffic is doing a number on our traffic. as we look at southbound 101 off-ramp there's a fender-bender causing slowing making your commute in the southbound direction. alongside 80 in eastbound direction 205 makes that merge there. there's a look at san rafael southbound on 101. that drive nice and clear. no slowing approaching 580. >> thank you. it's 5:01. expected to be another rough day on the bay for boaters.

there is a pair of dramatic rescues off coyote point where we have matt keller. what happened? >> reporter: this morning winds are calm at coyote point. they are blowing gently in the breeze. that's expected to change again today. take a look at this video how choppy bay waters were off san matt last night. around 6:30 friends got worried about a wind surfer who didn't return. san mateo fire department and fireboat joined a coast guard helicopter in looking for the man. during the search they spotted a 13-foot boat rocking in the bay with three kite surfers who were monitoring a race. their boat's engine had died. >> wind picked up so it got pretty rough and we tried to get back and then our motor broke down. we tried to row but it was too tough out there. >> reporter: as they were being towed back to shore, the coast

guard spotted the missing wind surfer. he was taken to a waiting ambulance with what appeared to be a dislocated shoulder. winds are expected to pick up to 25 knots. that's close to 30 miles per hour and there's also a small craft advisory for the bay here. matt keller, nbc 7 news. >> thank you so much. the u.s. supreme court could decide on two major cases involving gay rights this morning. one is california's same-sex marriage ban. prop 8. that was struck down by a federal judge. now, if the supreme court upholds that decision, same-sex marriage could begin again in california. justices could also use the case to legalize same-sex marriage across the country. the other decision is on a challenge to the federal defense of marriage act which prevents gay couples from getting certain federal benefits. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield will have much more on what's expected later this morning. meantime, san francisco examiner canceled a free concert that was supposed to take place

during pride weekend. there will not be an independent event outside of official pride entertainment. they invited her to perform as an apology for her anti-gay rant. the examiner is now apologizing. we have new details on the death of the actor who created one of television's most memorable characters. actor james gandolfini died at the age of 51 yesterday. we go live to the newsroom for more and reaction is pouring in. >> reporter: not just from hollywood even politicians are having a strong reaction as we learn new details this morning. one of those that james gandolfini's body has been moved from the hospital in rome to the city morgue and after an autopsy tomorrow we'll learn the official cause of death. right now it appears to be heart attack. an official with the hotel where gandolfini was staying with his son michael tells abc news that michael called the front desk around 10:00 p.m. local time

after his dad got sick in the room. the hotel called an ambulance and the director at the hospital where gandolfini was taken says they tried to resuscitate him for 40 minutes. his first wife and michael's mother flew immediately to italy to be with her son. the actor's death really hitting people hard. take a look. senator john mccain tweeted, one of the nicest guys i've ever met. "sopranos" coast guard tweeted i lost a brother and a best friend. the world has lost one of the greatest actors of all time. in new jersey, a diner is pay be tribute where the last scene of the hbo series "the sopranos" was filmed. the owner left that famous booth open with a reserved sign on it. >> real down to earth man. when the camera wasn't ruling. one night he brought sushi in for everybody. it was very nice. >> reporter: in addition to "the sopranos," gandolfini played leon pannette in "zero dark 30"

and panetta said that he liked gandolfini and that he did a great job in the movie and that gandolfini actually sent him a note apologizing for any shortcomings that might have been in his portrayal. he's survived by his wife, 8-month-old daughter, his son and two sisters. >> katie, thank you. the dog that killed a 6-year-old boy earlier this week in union city has been euthanized. the pit bull mix bit the boy on the top of his head on monday morning at his grandparents' home. he died at the hospital a few hours later. authorities say the dog was put down the next day. the boy's uncle who is a san mateo police officer owned the dog. no charges have been filed. a special private screening of the movie based on the oscar grant shooting will be shown in

oak l oakland. it's about the hours leading up to the shooting. the film is set to open in theaters july 12th after originally being slated for an october opening. it took home the grand jury and audience awards of the sundance film festival in january. state lawmakers are getting a big pay raise. they have voted to restore some of the cuts it made during the recession increasing salaries by 5%. that means the governor will earn $174,000 a year and lawmakers will make 95,000 in base pay. most lawmakers also take home an additional $30,000 in per diem payments and even more money for being committee leaders. california legislators are high evidence paid in the country. oakland a's uncovered the cause of the sewage spill. it wasn't a plumbing problem as

scientists say alaska is one of the fastest warming states. global warming has hit the arctic region especially hard. >> hardware stores are running out of fans. we have amazing video from the louisiana gulf coast. yesterday an amateur photographer captured a huge waterspout funneling down into the gulf of mexico just off grand isle. the waterspout eventually moved onshore making it a tornado. it partially damaged a camp roof. no one was hurt. >> wow. look at that funnel. >> that's an amazing sight. >> time to check our very calm weather now with leyla gulen. >> certainly not as hot as it is in alaska. we're cooler here. we do see a bit of a warmup which is nice. just in time for the first day of summer that comes tomorrow. today it is the last day of spring. we are going to see breezy conditions. so it's going to be a gorgeous day. if you want to take sailboats out on the water, you just want to be careful because 25 knots

supporters. the city's gay pride celebration is scheduled for next weekend. organizers held a kickoff party last night. same-sex marriage advocates say it's just a bonus that this decision could come during pride. they say the ruling will be life changing for so many. >> this is a fundamental right of equality recognizing our relationships, i myself have a child. many gay and lesbian couples have children. it's really important. >> reporter: same-sex couples were allowed to marry in san francisco for a brief time in 2004. opponents took the issue to the voters who passed proposition 8 banning gay marriage and the u.s. supreme court will decide today whether that should stand or be overturned or that decision could come today. if not today, then maybe next week. next thursday is the last scheduled day for decisions from the u.s. supreme court and that is two days before the city's pride celebration. live in san francisco, amy

investigating the shooting of a man who is in grave condition this morning. police say they found the man with at least one gunshot wound on virginia avenue near interstate 280 and highway 101. the shooting happened just after 6:00 last night near the san jose police activities league. so far investigators don't have any suspects. new developments this morning in the violent videotaped robbery of a woman on san francisco's muni. at least two other women have stepped forward now to say they were robbed by the same teenage girls. the two young robbers moved fast and hit hard punching the 68-year-old victim in the face, snatching her two purses and running off. the muni light rail train in the bay view district. this woman wants to be identified only as nicky says one of the girls stole her iphone last december while she was shopping at a store. police believe the girls are young, maybe 13 or 14 years old. >> they stopped and i was, like, i think you might have accidental taken my phone.

i was trying to be nice about it. she started to cry. >> the girl ran out of the store and got away. another victim says the same girl threw her to the ground and tried to take her iphone last week in front of a mission district cafe on 24th street. police think there may be more victims of the young suspects in the city. this morning b.a.r.t. workers are taking advantage of dump the pump day. they are hoping state mediators help the two sides reach a contract deal before it's too late. they joined negotiations yesterday to try to prevent a work stoppage. talks between b.a.r.t. and five unions are stalled. contract expires june 30th. drivers are encouraged to take public transportation to save money on gas while also helping environment.

acover the average family can save nearly $10,000 a year by riding mass transit. we're learning more about a hit-and-run accident that killed a cyclist in san jose. an suv hit 55-year-old glen arnold earnest as he rode his bike above highway 87 on monday afternoon. police say he was hit from behind and the driver took off. the car is described as a late 1990s or early 2000 model dodge durango or dakota. it is dirty white, light gray or silver in color. it's 5:35 now. new this morning, the senate's gang of eight and two republicans are near a deal that could break a major impasse on immigration reform on capitol hill. abc news learned a deal is expected to be announced this morning. the agreement dramatically beefs up security on america's borders doubling the size of the force currently 21,000 officers strong. the deal also calls for completing the fence along the

border. final details are being worked out. a possible vote could come as soon as next week. bay area nurses and those that oppose the keystone pipeline are planning to march across the golden gate bridge at noon today joining registered nurse as across the u.s. steppi up the call on the obama administration to reject approval of the pipeline. demonstrators protested during separate bay area visits by president obama and vice president this month. the sonoma city council voted this month to send the president a letter stating the city's opposition to the pipeline which would stretch from canada down to the gulf of mexico. this morning hundreds of people are back in their homes as threats subside from a raging wildfire. 1,000 people are back home this morning after they were forced to leave when the fire broke out sunday near yosemite national park. about 500 are still out of their homes right now. investigators say the 1,600 acre fire was started by an

unattended campfire. it's now 55% contained. closer to home, san jose firefighters fear the combination of weather conditions and human behavior could make this the worst fire season in five years. fire season is already under way more than a month earlier than normal. the fourth of july is the next big threat facing crews even though firework sales are illegal in san jose. residents know they are readily available if many nearby cities including gilroy and watsonville. >> at times i see kids go up to the park where it's a dry area and they start lighting fireworks and when it's so dry like that, everything is going to catch on fire and just burn. >> these things can go and people don't really get a perspective of how hot, how fast and how dangerous this stuff is. >> constant training is important for san jose firefighters. yesterday they invited members of the city council to train and experience firsthand some of the hazards firefighters face.

than three dozen burglaries from redwood city to los gatos. authorities say he spent two years in prison for similar string of burglaries. the d.a.'s office said madrid was paroled just a few months before the latest rash of crimes between last august and april. >> believed he would target server rooms and take electronic components but he would also take whatever is available. >> the stolen items are valued at $400,000. officials say madrid also crashed the networks of several companies when he stole their components. they say financial losses for those companies could total millions of dollars. an attempted abduction in pacifica turns out to be a hoax. a 10-year-old girl claimed a man tried to kidnap her on sunday. police released a sketch of the suspect based on her description but later started to doubt the girl's story. investigators say she finally admitted she made it up. pittsburg may discourage house parties with underage

drinking. the contra costa times reports parents who host parties for teens could face hefty fines and possible jail time. the city council will hear final reading of the social host ordinance july 15th. if approved, it would take effect august 14th. berkeley, concord and pleasanton approved ordinances to deter underage drinking. tonight the spurs will try to rebound from tuesday's difficult loss to the heat when they were just seconds away from wrapping up their fifth nba title. miami was on the brink of elimination on their home floor trailing by five points with 28 seconds to go but ray allen's clutch three with five seconds left forced overtime and miami went onto win forcing tonight's deciding game seven. the last road team to win a game seven in the nba finals was in 1978 when the washington bullets beat the seattle supersonics. i guess this bodes well for miami, right, eric, where the game will be played?

now. looking at live doppler 7 hd radar satellite. no cloud cover. very little fog along the coast. so a clear start to our morning. and this is all due to this trough of low pressure that is just marching to our east. that's just blowing that cool weather out followed by this ridge of high pressure bringing in the warmer conditions. so we are going to see a slight uptick in temperatures for today. we are going to see higher winds as well. because it's such a beautiful day, you want to take boat out on the water for local waters, we do have a small craft advisory with gusts up to 25 knots and that starts at noon through the evening. right now things are relatively calm. we are looking at 9 miles per hour around half moon bay. 12 miles an hour through that san bruno gap right into sfo but no flight delays as a result. our highs for today, we'll top out about 80 degrees in morgan hill and san jose 75 degrees. nice and comfy out there. 74 degrees in cupertino. lots of sunshine along the peninsula. 75 degrees in redwood city.

70 degrees in san mateo. along the coast, cooler at 62 degrees. half moon bay chillier in pacifica at 59 degrees. and as we continue into marin county, 76 degrees in santa rosa. 77 in san rafael. into napa, almost 80 degrees. in the east bay we're in the lower 70s to the mid 70s and as we push farther east into our inland valleys, 84 degrees will be our highest temperature for today as well as fairfield. so nice and toasty out there. we do have a game tonight that's going to be the giants taking on the florida marlins and first pitch at 7:15 starting off at 63 degrees and breezy. looks like things will cool off to upper 50s. our overnight lows for the bay area pretty much resting in the mid to lower 50s across much of the bay area. here's a look at my accuweather seven-day forecast. there you go. it will be slightly warmer tomorrow. first full day of summer. again on saturday we'll see some sunshine and then on sunday it will start to cool off just a

facebook page. i'll announce today's winner coming up around 6:45. it's 5:49 now. police in redwood city say three suspects in a string of burglaries on the peninsula are in custody. police arrested two men and a woman after a traffic stop in mountain view when an officer noticed suspicious property in the vehicle. turns out the items were reported stolen in four burglaries all on the same day in redwood city, palo alto and sun sunnyvale. police found property from several other break ins. the fbi has charged two men in upstate new york for allegedly scheming to create an x-ray radiation emitting device to kill people they targeted. investigators arrested eric fight and glen crawford, a self-described engineer and klan member. investigators say the plan called for using an industrial grade x-ray machine stored in a truck shooting concentrated

indiana jones will now be permanent fixture in the city's new downtown imagination park. filmmaker george lucas donated the land for the park and demolished a building to make room for it. the community foundation has raised almost half of the $300,000 it needs to cover the cost of creating and maintaining the park. the legendary skunk train will soon be rolling again. a large section of the railroad has been shut down since april when a tunnel collapsed. the train's owner didn't have the $300,000 to make a needed repairs until this week. san francisco's save the redwoods league will provide the money with an option to buy land to protect redwoods along the right of way. the owner of the railroad say repairs will begin immediately and they expect trains to be running again by mid july. >> kids have so much fun on that.
