good morning, i'm katie marzullo. glad to have you with us at 8:00 a.m. we'll send you over to lisa argen first. >> good morning to you. hi, everyone, high definition emeryville camera showing all the sunshine around the bay area. we had a few wisps of clouds and fog is around the central coast. 64 in santa rosa. 61 in livermore. you can see fairfield kicking up to the upper 60s. we are on our way to very warm afternoon especially in inland east bay and by the delta. temperatures will be in the lower 90s. notice the orange and darker reds getting closer

to the east bay valleys. temperatures peak and plenty of 80s even sunshine in the 60s at our coast. you know it's coming. a big drop in temperatures but did you know it's going to be raining here in parts of the bay area tomorrow. for some, pretty much nor everybody, i'll have details for unusual look ahead coming up. thank you. >> developing news in san francisco, heavy equipment and crews have arrived te marina green that to recover a minivan. the van went into the bay yesterday evening. one person was killed and the body is still in the vaccine. keira, what is happening now. a private company called bethel assists san francisco bay and delta, i'll move out 67 the way so you seeblgs what they are doing. they are attempting to the pull the minivan out of water. they are going to have a diver swim to the minivan

and hook it up to the tow truck line. we are awaiting tow trucks to arrive and once they arrived in 30 minutes the hope is tow trucks will arrive and pull the minivan ousted water. it's been there since 5:00 last night. take a look at video. just after the minivan plunged into the bay. coastguard says there were multiple people when it plunged in. all but one managed to get out and get to safety. that one body is still inside the van. one witness is a member from the boating team from nearby golden gate yacht club. he and his team raced and rescue that last person trapped inside. unfortunately they were unsuccessful. take a listen to his account. going down and it was just merging. they were able to get on the car and smash the window but unfortunately they cooperated get the

window to break completely. >> reporter: a few hours later crews found the van in about 25 foot water. currents were strong, it moved the van and when the van finally stayed in one place. it got stuck in very muddy conditions. that is another reason why divers couldn't get the minivan out of water. bethel assist is here and tow trucks are soon to arrive. they hope to pull the body out of van and try to identify the driver and identify the cause of death and figure out why the van went into the water yesterday evening. reporting live, "abc 7 news". >> katie: we'll check back in 30 minutes. should this happen to you. there are things you can could to try and save yourself. than estimated 400 people die each year because their cars are trapped in water.

most of victims call 911. they say don't wait, unbuckle and get the window and get out of car before it sinks, so passengers should aim for the front windows. an inexpensive break tool, it can punch out the glass before water fills the inside of your car. experts warn the first 30-60 seconds are key to get out of car safely. >> developing news out of san jose where a home has been destroyed by fire. fire was reported just before midnight near the corner of bluefield and vista park drive. a car went out of control, barreled into a house rupturing the gas lines and then starting the fire. home was destroyed and second house, same significant damage. one firefighter suffered a minor injury. people inside the home were not hurt. >> developing news, southwest airlines expect

lingering delays this morning after a system-wide computer failure caused it to ground 250 flights for nearly three hours last night. airline is working to clear a backlog of flights and reposition planes and crew. 14 southwest airlines flight are cancelled this morning. at the peak of the problem, nearly 60 flights were cancelled. airlines reservation system went down after 9:00 grounding departing flights because the agents couldn't check in with passengers. these are photos sent to ureport by a viewer in oakland airport. flights that were in the air were not affected and still cleared to land. >> developing news, police have arrested a man suspected of killing a hayward man earlier this year. he was arrested without incident early this morning in a parking lot of a san leandro walmart. police believe he shot and killed a man before

10:00 p.m. outside of a home on franklin avenue. taylor died the next day -- >> this week they have launched a plan with to deal with violent street gang problem. city has had 25 homicides this year. 8 of those are attributed to gangs. last night 40 extra officers were out on patrol saturating gang plagued neighborhoods. they will be back out tonight and another 24 officers will join them in july. police say the additional officers will help them act on tips from the public about gang activity. streets are cleared after an oil spill brought traffic to a grinding halt. four blocks of howard street from third to seventh had to be closed while they cleaned up oil.

it happened at peak of rush hour. they lay the chemical to soak up the long trail of oil but until it took hold cars and bikes were slipping and siding. >> vehicles were losing traction. we noticed our officers to stay off it due to hazard ard us on roadway conditions. and i decided to close the roadway down. >> katie: the street opened just after 10:00 as fans were leaving at&t park. starting today, drivers in the south bay will have a welcome relief in their daily commute. new carpool lanes are opening along interstate 880. lanes are open at 6:00 this morning on a four mile stretch on interstate running from highway 237 to milpitas to 101 interchange. carpool rules will go into effect monday morning, during the peak hours. sticking with traffic,

thousands of nascar fans and lots of traffic jams are expected for the 25th annual 350 this weekend. qualifying begins this morning. and our news reporter tells us the business of racing is good for local business. if you are looking for a room in novato at inn here, rooms have been booked for months by fans with a need for speed. nascar weekend is huge for north bay hotels. robert says he starts planning for it in january. >> nascar brings over hundred thousand people. with that, there are not hundred thousand rooms in marin county so mostly sonoma county and even goes to vallejo. >> ricky's bar and grill stopped taking dinner reservations this weekend last month. a driver made a pit stop

in the canadian province of alberta has killed two people. the bodies of two men were recovered yesterday near calgary. the city's mayor ordered town evacuated. royal canadian mounted police preparing for that searches are underway for people reported missing and feared drowned in the floodwaters. >> paula deen has taken to the internet offering apologies for the use of racial slurs. there wasn't enough to keep her job but the food network has severed ties. she is being sued by $1.2 million from one of our managers of her restaurants deen disputes the charges. during a deposition she was asked if she ever used "n"

word and she said she had. >> hurtful language is totally, totally unacceptable. i want to apologize to everybody for the harm that i have done. >> katie: she has written 14 best selling cookbooks and runs a $16 million food empire. her contract with the food network expires at the end of the month. >> happening today, susan g. komen will take place in san francisco and could be the last. they cancelled the event in san francisco and other cities starting next year because of the declining participation and high costs. nancy brin ker caused controversy when she wanted to take away komen grants for planned parenthood. >> an east bay woman is asking for help to find the dog that was stolen along with her car. jenna has been distraught since her dog disappeared.

it happened when she was shopping at a san pablo. car was found five days later destroyed by fire but there were no signs of a yorkie. >> where is my dog. i hope she okay. >> katie: she says it does not appear to be animal remains inside the torched car. she worried that the dog could be suffering without medication. arborists at john muir have a plan to preserve a dying tree planted by muir himself. this sequoia was planted in 1852. the mystery has a fungus that will eventually kill it. arborists have taking cuttings from the tree to attempt to grow a new one.

>> it's a living thing to john muir but also his interests in preservation and conservation. >> katie: parks took 700 cutting and sent them to firm in michigan that specializeds in reproducing trees. results should be known by christmas. >> results and report from the dam, it will be the largest dam ever demolished in california. it's hundred feet tall and more than 90 years old. it was declared seismically unsafe in 1995 and only the strongest of fish can make it over very steep fish ladder. removing the dam will take three to four years and half of the river will have to be diverted before cranes and crews can begin to tear down the structure. as we reported last month, the cost will be $38 million most of which will

be covered by monterey county water users. this is the first weekend of summer and for many people, turning their attention to their lawns. consumer reports has partnered with "7 on your side" on top rated lawn mowers. here is michael finney with the details. >> keeping your lawn cut can be a big job, driving your mower out dozens of times each year. to help you find mowers that are easier to use, consumer reports testers put themselves into it, 18 acres of grass with more than 45 mowers. easiest to use self-propelled mowers. >> they will get the job done faster. >> self-propelled mowers are good for speeding along flat sections of lawn. one feature to avoid big wheels. >> popular misconception is

that larger wheels make it easier to mow but they are further back to make the mower heavyer to push down on every time you turn the mower. here is same size mower and it's much lighter to push down. >> consumer reports found several good choices. $400 self-propelled honda is a best buy. they chop the grass into fine clippings that blend in the lawn when you mulch. this honda is much more efficient. >> these clippings are smaller. this bag will hold about four to five times clippings than any other mower. >> another good choice is troy belt. it has rear drive and single height adjustment. check this out. you can attach the hose to rinse away build up

clippings. >> katie: lisa argen joining me month now with the forecast on the second day of summer. sounds like today is going to cooperate. >> that may be about it. in fact, we are warming up. conditions really feeling like summer this afternoon. in fact numbers above the average, but tomorrow, wow, big changes and they don't stop and cooling off, clouding up and maybe showers in the north bay. live doppler 7-hd. we had have a couple areas of fog. here is main area in santa cruz where we still have left over stratus. it's been a warm start. 53 along the central coast and mount tam isn't this nice, today will be a much warmer day in the north bay. you were hot in the mid and upper 80s. once again quite warm and in the east bay, 61 in the

livermore valley. 62 in union city with upper 60s out by the delta. afternoon sea breeze keeping the city and nice and mild but warmer than yesterday. low 70s and then the numbers will drop as the winds will perhaps gust up to 20 miles an hour. sunny and warm today for all, cooler for everyone tomorrow with a chance of rain mainly in the north bay. then the rain is likely for the entire bay area come monday into tuesday. it's going take a while to move on through. couple systems headed our way. first one is weak one, a few light showers coming in tomorrow. you'll notice on our computer animation, they stay mainly in the north bay. to give you a little perspective you remember about a day and a half of rain usually falls average in june. last june and you remember two years ago the early part of june, we have the second wettest day on record with almost two inches of rain in san

francisco and then an inch and a half in oakland. so i don't see we'll see that much on monday but in fact we're going to see a pretty good amount, anywhere half an inch to an inch and a half in the north bay starting in the afternoon. maybe if you would like a showers in the north bay and even south bay, and peninsula seeing showers. early in the morning on monday. most of activity well to the north in sonoma, slipping in marin by noontime. look what happens the evening commute and later evening hours that continue to stay wet into early morning on tuesday. after that things quickly get back to summer. here is a look ahead at san jose. starting with the middle of the week when that rain ends, you'll notice we come back up into the upper 80s into next week and next weekend. highs today ranging from the low to mid 80s. even a few upper 80s to near 90 in morgan hill.

>> katie: good morning, glad you could start your morning with us. we wanted to give you a quick look at the weather. here a lisa argen. >> maybe on your way to lake tahoe where the numbers are which i amly mid 40s from tahoe valley airport. 54 in half moon bay. a little fog left over in santa cruz. in oakland today, it's going to be beautiful afternoon with high temperatures from the low 70s to the upper 70s around the bay. along the coast it's sunny, ocean beach, point reyes, low to mid-60s and inland, warming up to mid-90s for san ramon valley and by the delta. one day event because it's cooler and cloudier and everybody should see rain by monday. >> katie: we continue to follow follow developing news in san francisco. we want to take you back

out to the scene of a deadly minivan crash off the waters of marina green. keira is there live. >> i just spoke with the deputy chief. he says there is so much unknown right now but the main priority is getting the minivan out of water. it's been there for 16 hours and it is believed that woman is trapped inside. take a look behind me. this private company called bethel assists arrived within the last hour. they are here to get her out and wrecker just arrived. what happened was this bethel assists group had a diver go gown and put a line around the minivan. hope was to pull it straight up out of the water with the help of the tow truck that just arrived. this is the result of happened a minivan went into the water at marina green. take a look at the video from sky7hd about 5:00 last

night. people say they saw the van going about 20 miles per hour straight into the water. groups of heroic onlookers tried to save what was believed to be a woman inside. coastguard initially reported there was a group of people who did escape with their lives and that one woman was trapped inside. now the deputy fire chief says, no, that is not true. it is believed that the woman was alone in the van. difficulties trying to reach her last night included high tide, a very strong current and murky waters and a quickly setting sun. take a listen to the interview. >> biggest difficulty was the murky water. the divers that went down counties see it. the other thing, we didn't have a sonar system that could find the car. it took quite a while for them to find the car. >> reporter: it took about three hours to find the

car. the strong current moved the van and the fire department and police department could not find it. when they did it was under 25 feet of water trapped in some thick mud. as you can imagine, last 16 hours have not helped the situational. people here tell me their efforts will be very difficult today. they expected this could take many more hours. this crane, this tow truck with the crane just arrived and that will be what everyone hopes will be the saving grace to get this van out of the water. it will then be up to the police department to look into the cause of death and determine whether any medical condition may have led to this van going off the marina green and into the san francisco bay. >> katie: thank you for the update. >> police are showing you how to avoid becoming a victim of growing crime. here is abc news reporter

vic lee with the type of break-ins getting more and more common. >> police are looking for melvin belard, they believe he is responsible for rash of burglaries. m.o. is always the same. check the security camera video. a woman with an infant knocks on the door. no one answers, her accomplices enter the backyard and try to pry open the sliding glass door. >> the suspects are opportunists. >> because of rash of home burglaries, it's even more important now to safeguard your house when you go on vacation. >> give you some tips here. turn the ringer on your phone down low or off so people outside the house can't hear your phone go unanswered. put your tv on timers so they go on and off periodically in the evening

and your lights. be sure you have good locks on your windows and good locks on your doors. >> hide your garbage can. your neighbor's garbage cans are full and yours is empty they will know no one is in the house. ask a family member to park in the driveway so it looks like somebody has been home. one more important thing to do. even if you don't go on vacation. >> photos should be taken of all your valuables and jewelry and will help law enforcement identify this property. >> katie: new this morning, president obama is urging congress to pass immigration reform. senate will vote on a plan next week. in his weekly address, president obama says new analysis from the non-partisan congressional budget office immigration built would help the middle-class, boost the economy and shrink the deficit. >> according to this

independent report, reforming our immigration system would reduce our deficit by trillion dollars and boost our economy by 5% because of investments made and technologies invented by immigrants. >> the president adds the bill is not perfect and compromised and consistent with his principles. new details this morning caltrans has just released documents showing there were quality control problems with hundreds of steel rods installed another o the new span of the bay bridge. they reveal the rods were improperly treated with brake cleaner and unaproved product. it caused them to go brittle that led to cracking back in march. they are working on fix for the problem. they will not make a decision until july on whether the bridge will keep the scheduled labor day weekend opening. >> new this morning, bart is marking ten years since it begin service to san

francisco international airport. they have served more than 30 million passengers since the extension opened in 2003. bart officials say it continues to gain steam with 27% increase over the past four years. extension is just under nine miles long and consists of five stations running from colma to millbrae. some 800 low income children in san francisco kicked off their first day of summer at the civic center yesterday with great play time. they are also being encouraged to avoid the so-called summer blame drain. lyanne melendez explains how it is being done. >> reporter: he doesn't want to stay home during the summer. instead he and 150 other neighborhood kids come to home magic a program in san francisco's western

addition. there is a lot of focus on reading, math and science during the eight weeks they are here keeping their bodies active is just as important. hundreds of kids came to kick off the official beginning of summer by doing the things they are not exposed to. >> you know what comes with fun? learning and hard work. >> a supervisor who represents the western addition that the summer learning programs areessential. >> they provide activities for kids to be involved in, regular activity and adult supervision but things that keep kids' minds working. >> so the director of low magic, she says low income and minority kids suffer greatly from the summer slide. >> on average two months they lose and you do that over several years, that is why we see the kids going behind. >> 28,000 students participate in 80 summer

programs. your tax dollars help pay for them but most of the money comes from private foundations. he says he gets wise to stick with it. >> it's good to study and stuff. >> in san francisco, 44% of students will have access to this type of summer program. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, "abc 7 news" happening today, community members will hold a rally in san francisco to be what the oldest black bookstore in the country. it's in danger of eviction after owners purchased the property following a foreclosure. a health agency west side community services is offerings to buy back the building from the new owners above their purchase price in an effort to keep the store open. >> coming up 8:40, and

live doppler is clear in the bay area. around the central coast we still have fog that will be clearing. here is a look from the exploratorium camera, 60 in oakland. san jose warming up to 60. it been nice and sunny all morning with a cool 57 in santa cruz. here is mount tam. if you are doing any hike organize biking, it will be warm on the mountain with numbers in the 80s. upper 60s for the delta. mount diablo, very warm, in fact the valleys will see highs in the 90s. 63 in los gatos and union city 65 degrees. here is the clear coastguard. it's going to stay that way south of here along the san mateo coast we could get few patches of fog. overall, sunny and warm today with cooler conditions tomorrow. in fact, some light rain is possible in the north bay for your sunday afternoon into the evening. then it looks like everyone will see the wet weather on

monday even possibly into tuesday. couple of systems headed our way. it's not totally unusual but it is sort of a -- atypical for a late season cold front to dump a quarter to an inch and a half of rain. it's coming down in the north bay but rain around monterey and san jose before it is all said and done. tomorrow afternoon, spotty showers from ukiah to cloverdale and by early monday morning, showers from vallejo into emeryville and san mateo but this gets hung up. heavier rain in sonoma and then by 4:00, from marin to sonoma, could it add up there. through the afternoon, slug of moisture into the evening hours keeps the evening commute wet. down along the south bay, a little bit of rain, tenth to a quarter of an inch in santa clara valley. then it pushes out by tuesday afternoon.

today, how about 59 in sacramento and 96 in fresno. nice and hot if you like it that way and comfortable and 75 in in the northern sierra. after the rain on, away still cool. mid-80s. next week, another strong ridge of high pressure brings more heat your way. up in the north bay, sonoma if you are headed to the race way, 86 for a high and temperatures climbing to the 70s by noontime. high temperatures, 77 in oakland. 80 in fremont with mid-80s in san jose. 89 in livermore. look for 72 with a sea breeze in san francisco, if you her eded to the game in the city, numbers will be climbing, through the early afternoon and then they slide with the sea breeze, mid-60s by 4:00. sunny out there and cloudy and cooler, chance of rain
