>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, june 23rd. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> my, carolyn. taking a look at the radar, around the bay area we are dry but up to the north and west of us is a weak system that will be sliding south throughout the day today. that could bring a few sprinkles or light raindrops around the bay. there are two systems and the first one sort of primes the atmosphere. numbers starting out in the mid-50s to lower 60s. throughout the average we will be mostly cloudy and the numbers cooler ranging mainly the 60 and

around the 70s, perhaps an 80 by the delta. we could see a few rain drops but the main rain is tomorrow and tomorrow evening. we will detail that for you coming up. >> we have developing news out of santa fe where a tree fell and hit a car. you are looking at a photo of the tree. a branch about 70 feet long fell on to the car. one person was injured. the extent of the injuries are unknown. the tree was blocking winchester boulevard but has since been moved out of the way. two hows erupt into flames after a car slammed into a gas meter. inside the stolen car four children ages 9 to 12 out for a joyride. we have the story from south san jose. >> reporter: the night sky exploded with lights, sirens and flames. it was all focused around these

two homes on blue field drive. >> sounded like screeching around some turns and then we heard a loud, boom, and it sounded like an explosion. >> it was the sound of a stolen car plowing into a gas meter on the side of this home. police say the twelve-year-old driver and three of his friends, who ranked from nine to twelve, were out for a joyride. police noticed them on vista park drive around midnight. they followed the boys, who suddenly turned on to blue field and into these homes. >> it was just reckless. they aren't watching out for people or anything. they are not from this neighborhood. >> force tell abc7 the boys are from east san jose. the driver was taken to juvenile hall while the other boys were cited for joyriding and released to their parents. police rushed to the burning houses to help the homeowners escape. they all made it out save by but one officer was hurt in the process and the people moved

what they k cal advantage out of their burnt homes. >> they are thankful to be alive. you look at this and you think human value is more important than anything. >> no other homes were damaged but everyone was evacuated for several hours. one more thing i do want to mention, forces tell me sense all the kids involved were under 18, their parents will be responsible for paying for all this damage. in san jose, abc7 news. authorities in san francisco have in the released the identity of the woman who drove an s.u.v. into the bay. the silver dodge minivan was pulled from the water late yesterday morning, the body still inside. witnesses say the van jumped a curb at marina green friday going about 20 miles an hour and plunged into the bay. >> horrible. it's very sad. this is a place of happiness. we were fortunate that the soccer field wasn't loaded. it's a horrible tragedy for this

poor individual who lost his or her life. thankfully nobody else was injured. >> members of a boating team at the golden gate yacht club tried to break the back window with tools but they did not succeed. a close friend said the woman was a diabetic but right now it's unclear if that was a factor. sonoma county firefighters pulled a man buried up to his neck to safety yesterday after a sand cave collapsed near bodega bay. beach-goers were trying to join two separate holes they dug with a tunnel. shortly before 3:30 the tunnel collapsed. the man in the sand said they were having trouble breathing. rescuers used shovels to dig him out. man was trapped for about an hour but he refused any medical treatment. a wooden bridge in san francisco will be torn down after catching on fire and causing a suspension of caltrans

service. this was about 2:00 yesterday afternoon. moments later the flames jumped to the hillside below. a couple of trains passed under the burning bridge before firefighters could stop them. >> once they start going and burn, they will fall down on the tracks and post serious derailment hazards, good thing somebody called it in. >> the flames also damaged pipes under the bridge. one carried raw sewage that dripped on to the tracks. the department of public works crews fixed that. tomorrow the u.s. supreme court could decide two major cases with gay rights. one is prop 8, california's same-sex marriage ban that was struck down by a federal judge f the supreme court upholds it, same sex marriages could begin again in california. the other is a challenge to the law that federal benefits

receive. the gay pride playing is flying over city hall this morning after being raised last week. it's the first time that city has ever marked gay pride month. but not everyone is happy about it. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the story. >> the rainbow flag has been flying over the plaza in richmond since thursday. some didn't even notice. >> i don't realistically know how long the flag is up there and i come down and read here every night. >> when the nation went up and an e-mail went out to all 900 employees, some didn't appreciate the colors flying. one employee replied to the e-mail writings waving the gay pride flag in richmond is

inappropriate. >> it's offensive to the christian community. >> one wrote i have never seen a flag flown for irish american month or other groups that struggled too. and jim rogers said other minority groups are also regularly celebrated. >> america is strong because of diversity, not in spite of it. >> the decision to fly the flag was paid by the mayor. gay pride flag has been flying on the plaza for the last few days and the mayor has said it will continue to fly forrest of the month. residents we talked to didn't mind the rainbow colors. >> i don't think it's that big of a deal. >> doesn't bother me. it respects that part of our commune. >> they also said they respect city employees who oppose the rainbow flag flying because everyone is entitled to their

opinion. abc7 news. doctors say a missing san francisco teenage who are suffered a traumatic brain injury could die soon if he's not found. 19-year-old shawn was last seen a month ago. his family hopes this new medical opinion will change his status to medically disabled. that designation would bring more resources in to play. shawn's last cell phone call was placed to golden gate park. his family and friends are holding a vigil there at 2:00 this afternoon to try to raise awareness about their search. in developing news the man who revealed details on classified u.s. surveillance program is on the move this morning. chinese officials say edward snowden has left hong kong for moscow. it's unclear if he will stay there. it is also learned he helped hong kong with the group of wick i leaks. they assisted him.

snowden has a monday flight to cuba. there a reports he plans to head to venezuela from there. these developments coming after the obama administration formally asked hong kong's government to extradite the former u.s. contractor. the ohio airport show is scheduled to finished to a day after a tragic accident. a pilot and wing walker died when the plane crashed right in front of hundreds of spectators. we have more on what happened. >> watch this, jane wicker, standing on top of the world! >> wing walker jane and a pilot killed during a show in ohio. their buy plane exploding into a ball of fire in front of horrified spectators, including families taking their children to the air battics. >> we never thought we would witness this. >> it's kind of surreal, you

>> welcome back, everyone. it's 5:14 on this sunday morning. thank you for waking up so early and joining us for the abc7 sunday morning news. this is a live look from our roof cam showing you a bit of the lights of the city this morning. it's going to be about 65 degrees later on today. dig out that umbrella because rain is heading our way. lisa argen along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. well, trial begins tomorrow in a case that's being closely watched nationwide. neighborhood night watch man george zimmerman fatally shot unarmed teenager trayvon martin last year. yesterday the judge ruled audio experts will not be allowed to testify about screams on a 911 tape. it means it's up to the jury to

decide in the voice is zimmerman's or martin's. zimmerman has claimed it's his voice and he shot the 17-year-old in self-defense. prosecutors argue it's martin calling for help. this week president obama is expected to unavailable a plan for the u.s. to prepare for climate change. president said he will outline the steps tuesday e hasn't given any details. but white house aids say it will include more support for renewable energy sources and could strengthen the authority of the environmental protection agency. >> there are questions about how critical the national security agency surveillance programs have been in thwarting potential terrorist plots against the u.s. in this week's sunday exclusive they discuss whether the programs threaten the privacy of innocent americans. he will also discuss any damage that may have been done to u.s. intelligence gathering by the

ongoing leaks about the program. you can watch "this week" right here on abc7 at 8:00. surgeons have made huge strides in treating the human heart. researchers at stanford university are using a new technique that could make heart surgeries even precise, starting with an exact replica of the patient's heart. carolyn johnson explains. if you didn't know that dr. wall wong is a stanford cardiologist you might think he's heating up his lunch. but he believes what is cooking in this 3d printer is nothing short of a revolution in the way surgeons treat the heart. >> to be able to have a structure of the heart in front of us and to hold us in our hands and to test new device wes are developing is really a miracle. >> a miracle of software and engineering that can produce an exact copy of a patient's heart. ct scans capture multiple views

of the heart as a series of slices. >> the next step after that is to take this data and select out what we want to make our 3d model out of. >> research fellow jeff caves will layer the ct images and their corresponding measurements into sophisticated cat software similar to what they use to print blueprints for buildings. slowly guiding the printer. >> each is flat but since they are so small we can represent the complex curvature of the anatomical structures. it's full 3d at this point. >> using reams of melt i believe plastic the 3d printer reproduces the heart in a process that takes several hours. results from the point of view of a cardiology are stunning. >> one can leave the settings overnight and come back the next day and have a completed heart. you can see exceptional of the tail and the structures that hold the valves in place. you get an excellent view of the

different heart chambers, the different tubes that enter the heart. it's incredible. >> the models are so accurate dr. wong said surgeons and researchers could potentially scale and fit devices ranging from catheters to coronary stints to the precise dimensions of a person's heart and test out strategies in advance before a person ever enters an operating room. >> we can have different tools that deliver new valves and other devices to different parts of the heart. there are all different approaches that we are going to see en explosion of in the future. >> carolyn johnson, abc7 news. well, this is a big treat for astronomy buffs. take a look at this shot taken early this morning of the super moon. it is the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. 42% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon. the super moon reached 36789arogy around 4:30 which means when part of its orbit is

closest to earth. you already knew that, lisa, but that's a new term for me. >> huge. really pretty. >> yeah. >> we are looking at changes already. despite the clouds you can still see the moon and some fog in san francisco. live doppler 7hd, dusting it off the next several days. we will see periods of rain between now and tuesday. so you will notice that the cloud cover over the bay area, some of it is in the form of low clouds. here's the first in a couple of systems that will beheaded our way. this one is the weaker one but it will spread some rain across the north bay. scattered light showers over parts of the coast and east bay through the rest of the day. weak one first and the filed temperatures right now. upper 50s in oakland with 61 mountain you view. golden gate bridge, 54. 59 in santa cruz. here's a look from our kgo roof camera. you will notice the numbers still in the 50s here and the cloud cover rete low. visibility about a mile around

half moon bay. we are looking at some gusty winds around napa this morning. up to 22 miles an hour. 57 right now in fairfield. of the winds are gusting over 30 miles an hour. emeryville a forecast highlights so we are starting out with a lot of clouds. we will call it mostly to partly cloudy today. cooler temperatures with a chance of rain throughout the afternoon. more rain becomes likely tomorrow. looks like the emphasis is shift to go the later part of the day on monday. so that's the first system. you will notice that it is pretty close to us. you can see all the clouds. but as we time it out for you, we will see that we are looking at the periods of rain. here we are at noontime where most of the rain is up in the north bay. we've got cloverdale, marin county, you see the heavier shades of green here and not much going on in the rest of the bay. then just a few light scattered showers throughout the rest of the day. 8:00 you can see some around the santa cruz mountains. but look what happens overnight. tomorrow morning's commute we

have a break and the heaviest activity stays offshore. 1:00 in the afternoon. it looks mostly cloudy. but then by the evening hours, 10:00 here we are,-yet rain from north to south even in the east bay. we continue on through the 8:00 hour tuesday morning still looking at the rain showers throughout the afternoon on tuesday. finally it lefts on out. then we are looking at more dramatic changes for the second half of the work week. but overall rainfall amounts between now and tuesday night, one to two inches in the north bay, a quarter inch to three quarters inch around the central bay and a tenth to quarter of an inch in the south bay. even you folks around monterey picking up a few, a little bit of rain and the south bay. high temperatures held down from the cloud cover. you this is the staterd rain showers mainly in the north bay. 71 in vallejo. look for the light rain in the afternoon. in san fast tell 72. low 70s in santa cruz. here's the look ahead.

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you. we have some low clouds and higher clouds of that overtaken the clouds since yesterday in advance of our next weather system. i'm not talking about any rain now, but it is on the way. in fact, we will see some of this push to the south and the light showers mainly in the north bay today. the forecast for the rest of the

day, then, around the bay we are going into san jose and berkeley and the east bay today numbers will be cooler, under mostly cloudy skies, mid-and upper 6os, maybe a few areas of light rain on the coast. numbers in the upper 50s to lower 60s, perhaps some patchy drizzle. and inland you will still stay rather mild in the mid-70s to near 80. looks like the rain will hold off for you tomorrow. we are talking about a couple days and then a big heat-up. carolyn. >> thank, you lisa. a massive fire in southwestern colorado has now grown to nearly 100 square miles. fire officials say they are still optimistic they can protect the town of south fork. hundreds of residents and tour efforts have opinion forced out of that small community. no structures have been lost and right now the wind is helping keep the flames away from homes. another fire in colorado, the so-called black forest fire, destroyed more than 500 homes before it was finally contained.

daredevil nick wallenda is getting ready to show off his skills again. you might remember last year wallenda walked across niagara falls on a tightrope live on abc. now he has something even bigger in store. today he plans another death defying feat, this time he will walk across the little colorado river gorge near the grand canyon. the entire walk is a third of a mail across a wire 1500 feet above the river. that's higher than the empire state building. and this time he is not going to be tethered. happening today, a nine-year-old fairfax girl who took a stand to end human trafficking by selling lemonade will join forces with an oakland nonprophet to sell her -- profit to sell her beverages in stores. they will intro cues make a stand lemonade to the at a market in santa rosa. the organic bottled beverage will be sold in grocery stores

across the bay area, and there is no price tag. summers can pay what they choose. half the profits into go to organizations that work to end child slavery. vivian raised more than $100,000 last year when she set up a roadside lemonade stand in her effort to combat human trafficking. oakland schools have a plan to have most of their third graders proficient in reading by 2020. abc7 news education reporter lyanne melendez tells us why third grade is so crucial to academic success. teachers have known that if a child is not reading by the end of third grade, he or she will have a hard time catching up. kids that don't catch up are more likely to miss school and kids that miss school are more likely to drop out. >> oakland's mayor has joined a lit's campaign to make it more a

success to learn reading. only 32% that finish the third grade right now can read at that grade level. the rogers community is spearheading the effort by bringing in organization to fund program that will increase the lit's rate. >> we have a city-wide campaign with over 100 organizations participating all toward the goal of 85% of oakland kids reading by that grade level by the end of third grade by 2020. >> they sat down to talk about the type of programs that will make the oakland read 2020 campaign a reality. this is how the school district thinks it can reset goals. first, by expanding the number of preschools in oakland. >> people going door to door, getting young people who weren't otherwise in preschool into some of the preschool slots in oakland. >> the district will also pay close attention to school attendance. too many children miss too many days of school. the third goal is to offer summer programs so that kids can

continue learning and nothing gets lost. right now the oakland public library has a summer reading and lunch program. the fourth plan is to reach out to oakland families, asking them to get a lot more involved in their kids' education. educators agree, parent involvement is one of the crucial pieces of this plan. in oakland, leeann melendez, abc7 news. we have breaking news out of san jose where one person has been injured following a house fire. the fire broke out around 3:45 this morning at a home on south garden court. authorities say the home was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. three people were inside the home at the time. all fortunately managed to get out safely. one was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. the fire was knocked down about an hour later. the cause is under investigation. we have a crew heading to the scene and we will bring you a live report during this newscast. a ten-year old philadelphia

girl is recovering after a rare lung transplant from an adult donor. sarah underwent six hours of surgery on june is it 11th. her mother said that she's now awake, she's smiling and nod to go questions. back in may doctors said sarah, who suffers fromcystic fibrosis, had five weeks to live. because she's a child, she had to wait for another child donor. so you probably know about the fight that her family raised to get her put on the adult donor list. doctors say the lungs are working well. it's a bittersweet final day for the three-day walk to end breast cancer. this will be the last time the susan gkomen three day walk will start in san francisco. the money simply isn't there after susan komen slashing planned parenthood funding. each must raise $2,300 to

participate. the walk will continue in seven other cities across the country. happening today about 700 children are expected in downtown burlingame for the 10th annual ryan's ride. it's a bicycle journey to raise money for concerns programs. the event features festive racing activities for children while also raising money in association with the live strong foundation. you may recall that's the cancer support nonprofit started by cyclist lance armstrong. organizers decided to move forward with this year's event decide a doping admission by armstrong earlier this year. since it began in 2004, ryan's ride has raised more than $570,000. this year's ride kicks off at 10:20 this morning near california and lorton avenues. participation is free. just ahead you will meet a bay area couple living in the cloud. they have quit their day jobs and are now getting by one app

this is the first weather system that continues to sink to the south. out ahead the low clouds and fog. you see our sweep on the mount st. helena right now picking up what we call verga. here is the golden gate bridge where it is very cloudy. mild temperatures for mountain view, 60 san jose, 55 half moon bay with mild visibility. and the bay bridge looking at the clouds. the low clouds. 56 up in santa rosa. we've had breezy winds through napa and fairfield. cooler air on the way ahead of the system will plenty of cloud cover and what a nice shot. you know where this is. lake tahoe, temperatures today about 69 with increasing clouds. you, too, will see the rain showers right on through the middle of the week in the mountains. mostly cloudy and then we will have a bit of sun here and there. mainly in the south and east bay. best chance of rain will be in the north bay today. then rain is likely for everyone tomorrow with the main rain, heavy rain coming in tomorrow evening.

so we are looking at this first system here brushing up against the northern california coast. this is kind of priming the atmosphere. it is the weak system. just a couple hundredth out of this. it's that next one and we will get it out for you. 9:00 this morning you see the clouds. by noontime we have rain from santa rosa, cloverdale to point reyes and into southern main and perhaps a little over into the east bay and on the peninsula. throughout the aaron you see the spotty showers. santa cruz mountains, maybe a few areas of drizzle in san jose. then we get a break and here we are 4:00 monday morning. the commute actually at this point looking at some light rain. 1:00 in the afternoon still not a lot going on. we look for the main activity to come in after the evening commute. 10:00 monday night look at all the rain. north and east and it continues right on through the commute on tuesday morning. then after that by noontime

quickly and we have a big drying and warming trend head he had our way. one to two inches in the far north bay around sonoma county and we look for a quarter inch three quarters inch in the entire area. so today another great day in the bay. much cooler. in the upper 60s around sonoma. big changes there. 76 in morgan hill so the showers this afternoon in the north bay we will see more tomorrow, mainly later in the day lingering into tuesday. mid-80s to the upper 80s on nurse day. we are talking mid-90s. we could be conservative with the temperatures next weekend as a very big ridge of high pressure heads our way. another dramatic swing. >> but that rain, i don't know if people are prepared -- well, they should be listening to you and get prepared. >> yeah, but great news for fire danger. we are so dry.

i think everyone is kind of thinking, wow, what a bonus here. >> all right. thank you, lisa. >> we have breaking news in san jose where someone has been injured following a house fire. it happened at a home on south garden court. abc7 news reporter kira klapper joins us live with more details. good morning, kira. >> good morning to you, carolyn. the san jose fire chief tells me that the father of this family suffered minor burns in this fire. he was treated and released at the scene. but this morning he and his fiancee and his son are homeless after an early morning fire just tore through their home. we are actually just up the block because it is still an active scene. 911 dispatch had calls about the fire about 3:45 this morning. the family said they woke up to the smell of smoke. when the father went to find where the smoke was coming from, he found the garage completely engulfed in flames. again, the family of three was able to get out of the home safely just moments before the

house just went up in flames. it took firefighters about an hour to put out the fire. they do say the home's fire alarms were working. they just had not been triggered yet because the fire had not spread to those parts of the house where the fire alarms were. the fire department expects to be horry a few more hours make sure all the hotspots are out and then the investigation begins into what caused this fire. maybe it was work in the garage that could have sparked the fire and maybe it was one of the cars. investigation continues as the day progresses. abc7 news. >> interesting about the fire alarms that they have, but they have not activated yet. >> exactly. so they were lucky, the fire chief said they woke up to the smell of spoke. that saved their lives. >> thank you, kira. >> we have a new abc7 news smartphone app to keep you on top of all the latest breaking news, weather and traffic. you can use it to watch our newscasts and breaking news live
