overcast at the golden gate as well. plenty of clouds around the bay area but certainly your eye goes to this batch of moisture. unusual but, yes, it is headed our way. it's the first in a series of unusually strong and wet weather systems that will spread rain around the bay. right now look tech cloudy skies in the forecast in the afternoon does call for the chance of rain not only in the north bay but across the bay. the best chance will be in the north bay. clouds will dominate the sky with mid-and upper 60s around the bay. along the coast fog and mist. upper 6 upper 60s. numbers of coming down. the main activity coming in tomorrow. but lasting through tuesday. we will detail that coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. we have developing news out of san jose where a tree fell and hit a car. you are looking at a photo of the tree. authorities say a branch about 70 feet long fell on to a car just before midnight last night near winchester boulevard and

tish way. one person was injured. the extent of the injuries is unknown. the tree was blocking winchester boulevard but has since been moved out of the way. two houses erupt into flames after a car slammed into a gas meter next to two homes. inside the car, four children, ages 9 to 12 out for a joyride in a stolen car. abc7 news reporter lisa has the story from south san jose. >> the night sky exploded with lights, sirens and flames. it was all focused around these two homes on blue field drive sounded like screeching around turns and then we heard a loud boom. it felt like an explosion. >> it was the sound of a stolen car plowing into a gas meter on the side of the home. the twelve-year-old driver? three of his friends, who ranked from nine to twelve, were out for a joyride. police noticed them on vista park drive around midnight. they followed the boys, who

suddenly turned on to blue field and into these homes. >> they are just reckless. they are just not watching out for people or anything. they are not from this neighborhood. >> source tell abc7 the boys are from east san jose. the driver was taken to juvenile hall while the other boys were joy, they were cited foran joyriding and released to their parents. the police helped the homeowners escape. they made it out safely but one officer was hurt in the process. >> the families moved what they could salvage out of their burnt homes. >> they are thankful to be alive. when you see something like this and you look and you think human value is more important than anything. >> no other homes on the entire street was damaged but everyone was evacuated for several hours. one more thing i do want to mention, they tell me since all the kids involved were under 18, their parents will be responsible for paying for all this damage. in san jose.

abc7 news. >> authorities in san francisco still have not released the identity of the woman who drove an s.u.v. into the bay. the silver dodge minivan was pulled from the water late yesterday morning with the body still inside. witnesses say the van jumped a curb at marina green friday going about 20 miles an hour and plunged into the bay. >> it's horrible. it's very sad. this is a place of happiness. we were fortunate that the soccer field wasn't loaded. a horrible tragedy for this poor individual who lost hisser her life. thankfully nobody else was injured. >> members of a boating team at the golden gate yacht club tried to break the back window but they were not able to do so. a close friend says the woman was a diabetic but right now it's unclear if that's a factor. sonoma county firefighters pulled a man buried up to his neck to safety yesterday after a

sand cave collapsed near bodega bay. beachgoers were trying to join two separate holes they dug with a tunnel. shortly before 3:30 the tunnel collapsed. the man in the sand said he was having trouble breathing. rescuers used shovels to dig him out. he was trapped about an hour but he refused any medical treatment. a wooden bridge in san francisco will be torn down after catching on fire and causing a suspension of caltrain service. the video shows the fire burning on the bridge around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. a couple trains passed under the burning bridge before firefighters could stop them. things fall on the track and it's a serious derailment hazard. good thing somebody called it in.

>> pipes were damaged under the bridge and one carried raw sewage that dripped on to the tracks. department of public works crews were called in to fix that. tomorrow the u.s. supreme court could decide to you major cases involving gay rights. one is california's prop 8. the same-sex marriage ban that was struck down by a federal judge as unconstitutional. if the supreme court upholds that lower court ruling, same sex marriages could begin again in california. the other decision is on a challenge to the federal defense of marriage act. doma does not allow legally married same-sex couples to receive federal benefits that straight couples enjoy. stay with abc7 news for live coverage of the supreme court decisions on air and online. it could happen tomorrow or any time during the week. we will bring you the decisions when they happen. the gay pride flag is flying over richmond city hall since being raised last week. it's the first time that city

has ever marked gay pride missouri. but not everyone is happy about it. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the story. >> the rainbow flag has been flying over civic plaza in richmond since thursday. it's a detail some regular visitors didn't even notice. >> i didn't realistically know how long the flag was up here and i come down and read every night. >> when the flag went up and an e-mail went out to all 900 richmond city employees, some didn't appreciate the colors flying. according to the contra costa times, one replied to the e-mail writing "waving the gay pride flag in the city of richmond is inappropriate. richmond is not the castro. it's offensive to our faith-based community." >> one wrote i have never seen a flag displayed for native-american heritage month or hispanic heritage month or others. didn't they struggle too?

they said other main orty groups are also regularly celebrated. >> no moran controversy for juneteenth and cinco demayo flag. america is strong because of diversity, not because of it. >> the gay pride flag has been flying there the last few days and the mayor said it is going to continue flying for the rest of the month. residents we talked to didn't mind the rainbow colors. >> i don't think it's that big of a deal. >> i think it shows respect to the community. >> they also said they respect city employees who oppose the rainbow flag flying because everyone is entitled to their own opinion. in richmond, abc7 news. doctors say a missing san francisco teenage who are suffered a traumatic brain injury could die if he's not found soon. 19-year-old shawn was last seen a month ago. his family is hoping this new

medical opinion will change shawn's status to medically disabled. that designation would bring more resources in to play. shawn's last cell phone call was trace today golden gate park. family and friends are holding a vigil there at 2:00 this afternoon to try to raise more awareness about their search. in developing news the minnesota who revealed details out of classified u.s. surveillance programs is on the move this morning. chinese officials say edward snowden has left hong kong for moscow. snowden has talked about okay asylun in iceland. we also learned he helped with the help of wikileaks. abc7 news confirmed he has a monday flight to cuba. he plans to head to venezuela from there. it comes after the obama administration formally asked hong kong's government to extradite the former u.s. contractor. an ohio air show is expected

to continue today, a day after a tragic accident. a pilot and a wing walker died when the plane crashed in front of hundreds of horrified spectators. abc news reporter has more on what happened. >> watch this! jane wicker sitting on top of the world! >> wing walker jane wicker and the pilot was killed during an airshow in dayton, ohio. their plane exploding into a ball of fire in front of horrified spectators, including families taking their children to see a day of show aerobatics. >> we never thought we would witness this. it's really sad. >> it's kind of surreal. you can't believe it, something like that actually happened in front of you, and you just kind of, you know, you are kind of in a state of shock. >> the national transportation safety board is now investigating the crash. >> this is a tragedy for what's a very small community. you know, obviously our thoughts

>> welcome back, everyone. trial begins in florida tomorrow in a high profile case. neighborhood night watch man george zimmerman fatally shot unarmed teenager trayvon martin last year. last year the judge ruled audio experts will not be allowed to testify about screams heard on a 911 tape. the lawyers on both sides can argue, but this ruling means it's up to the jury to decide if the voice heard on the tape is zimmerman's or martin's. zimmerman claimed it's his voice and he shot the 17-year-old in self-defense. prosecutors argue it's martin's voice crying for help. opening set to begin tomorrow. this week president obama is expected to unavailable a plan for climate change. they said he will outline the

steps on tuesday. he hasn't given any details, but white house a.i.d.s. say his plan will include more support for renewable energy scores could strengthen the authority of the environmental protection agency. there are questions about how critical the national security agency surveillance program, how critical they have been in thwarting potential terrorist plots against the russian. in a "this be" "sunday exclusive they discuss whether the programs threaten the privacy of innocent americans. he will talk about the programs. you can watch "this week" right here on abc7 at 8:00. surgeons have made huge strides in treating the human heart. researchers at stanford university are using a new technique this could soon make heart surgeries even more precise. starting with an exact replica of the patient's heart.

health and science reporter carolyn johnson explains. >> if you didn't know that dr. paul wong is a stanford cordial gist you might think he's heating up his lunch. but he believes what is cooking in this 3d printer is nothing more than a revolution in how surgeons treat the heart. >> the miracle of software and engineering that can produce the exact copy after patient's hort. first ct scans capture multiple views as a series of slices. >> the next step after that is to take this data and select out what we want to make our 3d model out of. >> they will layer the 3d images and corresponding measurements into sophisticated cat software, similar to what architects use to create blue prince for buildings, slowly translating

them into a model to guide the 3d printer. >> they are flat but since they are small we can represent their complex curvature of the anatomical structures. >> using reams of meltable plastic, it reproduces the heart in a process that takes several hours. the results from the point of view of a cardiologist are stung. >> one can leave the settings overnight and come back the next day and have a completed heart. you see the structures that hold the valve in place. you get an excellent view of the different heart chambers, the different tubes that enter the heart. it's incredible. >> the models are so accurate dr. wong said surgeons and researchers could potentially scale and fit devices from catheters to sent to the precise measurements of the heart and test out strategies in advance

before a patient ever enters an operating room. >> we could have tools that deliver devices to different parts of the heart. we will see an explosion of these procedures in the future. >> abc7 news. take a look at this. it's a big treat for astronomy buffs. this is a shot of the super moon. it's taken early this morning from our roof camera in emeryville. though you may not be able to tell from the fog, it is the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. 14% larger, 30% brighter than an average full moon. the super moon reached what is called parogy around 4:30. that's when part of its orbit is closest to the earth. beautiful out there. >> you got to see it yesterday with the clear skies. >> they aren't going to be so clear coming up? >> that's right. you can see the fog behind us. we have plenty of clouds on the way in advance of an incoming weather system that's spreading fog our way and breezy winds to

parts of the valleys and also out toward the delta. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. the atmosphere still try but the first system is just up the road. you notice the wet weather here and pushing southward into sonoma and marin and even the peninsula looking at showers today. here's a closer look. you see right now this is just verga rain showers not reaching the ground. mt. tam right now, you see the low cloud deck. the camera is shaking a bit. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. 55 half moon bay and we have fog all the way down the coast. stanley cruz 59. 61 mountain view and 66 san francisco. another vantage point our south beach camera, the bay bridge underneath and with the cloud cover all around, 59 in livermore as well as union city. the winds not a big factor with this system but we are going to see generous amounts of rain. so from this picture looking

pretty good from lake tahoe. mostly cloudy this morning with cooler conditions. chance a rain but the clouds moving into the sierra nevada they have and several days as well. rain is likely. the heaviest rain late tomorrow and even into tuesday and tuesday night. it's not until the middle of the week things change and, boy, do they change toward the ends of the week and into next weekend. this will be, of course, a distant memory. we can use some of this rain. this is the light rain and the first system that will push through in the afternoon. we will see rain in the north bay, on the peninsula and a little break. then the next system cueing up. timing it out for you you notice throughout the morning hours not a lot going on but by noontime look what naps sonoma and marism n, even along the peninsula. mist and drizzle at the coast. and right through the 8:00 hour just spotty showers. maybe a spotty shower down toward san jose. overnight scattered light showers into 4:00 your commute, a little bit of a break here.

look at the afternoon. we just have cloudy skies, but it's late in the day. the evening commute toward the evening hours into 10:00 when the a main activity from santa rosa, even the east bay valleys and this is when san jose will get into the act and through 8:00 your tuesday morning commute now looking wet with the scattered showers through the afternoon. then the system begins to lift. by 11:00 still a few showers by cloverdale and santa rosa. so rainfall amounts between now and 11:00 tuesday, up to one and two inches here in the green. quarter inch to three quarters inch around the entire bay area but down around the south bay the santa cruz mountains just a ten. to quarter inch. pretty impressive for this time of year. scattered showers today with temperatures in the 60s and 70. 72 fremont. 76 in morgan hill. you are headed to the game big difference today with more clouds around, a little breezy. temperatures in the low to

nonprofit to sell her beverages in doors. vivian and fair trade usa will introduce make a stand lemonade today at a market in santa rosa. the organic bottle beverage will be sold in grocery stores across the bay area. and get this, there is no price tag. customers can pay what they choose. half the profitings will go to organizations that work to end child slavery. vivian raised more than $100,000 last year when she set up a roadside lemonade stand. her effort to combat human trafficking. oakland schools have an ambitious plan to have most of their third graders proficient in reading by 2020. abc7 news education reporter lyanne melendez tells you also why third grade is so crucial too academic success. >> teachers have known that if a child is not reading by the end of third grade, he or she will

have a hard time catching up. >> kids who don't catch up are more likely to get behind in school and they are then more likely to drop out. >> oakland's mayor has joined a literacy campaign to make kids more sick he ses full at reading. right now only 42% of students finishing the third grade can read at grade level. the rogers communities is spearheading the effort by bringing in more foundation to help fund programs that will increase the lit's rate. >> we have a city-wide campaign with different organizations participating all towards this goalful 835% of oakland kids reading at that grade level bit end of to 20. >> civic leaders have programs that will make the oakland reeled 2020 campaign a reality. this is hue the school district thinks it can reach that goal. by expanding the number of preschools. >> getting young people who

hundredth to maybe tenth of an in and overnight we will see a few more light rain showers and the heaviest rain is the next band coming in later on on monday. so throughout the afternoon today, by about noontime, we have most of the activity from sonoma county, cloverdale, into marin county some lighter rain and some mist and drizzle along the san mateo coast. through the evening hours you see still light rain scattered about. right now along the peninsula, the santa cruz mountain and san jose should be more easing. overnight main activity still is away from the bay, but by 1:00 in the afternoon still just the light showers. it looks wet. in fact, 10:00 monday night is when we are looking at widespread heavier rain and then into tuesday morning the commute does look wet. so at this point the monday morning commute not looking bad and tuesday looking worse. look through the afternoon. still it's until 11:00 we still have some rain showers and plenty of clouds. one to two inches in the north
