this morning, a turn for the worse. new developments in the health of nelson mandela, the latest on the former south african president's condition in a live report. plus, edward snowden on the run and carrying with him a trove of the nation's most sensitive secrets. this morning we're learning more about where he might be headed and how the u.s. hopes to get him back. above the earth without a net. the latest death-defying walk by nik wallenda. and sugar lovers have spoken. twinkies are about to make a return to store shelves. good monday morning. we begin with those new details coming from south africa. nelson mandela, the former south african leader and nobel peace prize winner, is now in critical condition.

the white house is closely monitoring the unfolding crisis at the hospital in pretoria. >> abc's devin dwyer joining us now with the very latest on this. devin. >> reporter: hey, good morning, john and diana. that's right. the world is closely watching south africa awaiting any word on mandela's condition. meanwhile, south africa's president has appealed for prayers. well wishers gathered this morning outside the hospital in pretoria where nelson mandela is now in critical condition. late sunday south african president jacob zuma announced that mandela's condition had worsened. zuma said he visited with mandela's doctors who told him that the condition of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader is now critical. mandela also been in the hospital for more than two weeks with a recurring lung infection. he's been vulnerable to respiratory problems since contracting tuberculosis while in prison under apartheid. mandela remains a hero to many around the world. an inspirational former south african president and nobel peace prize winner, a symbol of peace and reconciliation.

his last public appearance was at the 2010 world cup soccer tournament which was hosted by south africa. president summa said in a statement that mandela is now in good hands and doctors are doing everything they can to get his condition to improve. they also said he is comfortable. now, president obama is scheduled to visit south africa on friday, his first presidential visit to that country. he was scheduled to meet with mandela, but that meeting is now up in the air depending on the former president's health and the wishes of his family. we're also closely monitoring right now south africa's president jacob zuma giving a press conference. no word from him yet on anything about mandela but we will be closely watching that this morning. john and diana. >> we will, indeed, devin dwyer in washington, thank you. all right, now to nsa whistle-blower edward snowden hopscotching across the globe to escape u.s. officials fighting to have him extradited. for espionage. >> snowden flew from hong kong to moscow, and cuba could be his next stop. abc's kirit radia is live now in moscow with the latest on his

quest for asylum. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. at this very moment edward snowden is still in the moscow airport. he doesn't have a visa so he can't leave the airport and his flight to cuba is scheduled to take off in just about two hours. it's been a rather bizarre and mysterious layover for snowden. nobody's actually seen him. he was reportedly whisked away by a group of official cars that met his plane on the tarmac and we spoke to several passengers on his flight who saw those cars but, they, of course, had no idea that snowden was on board. it's believed that snowden's been in the care of ecuadorian diplomats who are expected to escort him on the rest of his trip. we saw the ambassador's car parked outside the airport and chased another one of the diplomats. he refused to comment. meanwhile, the white house issued a statement just a short while ago saying they were disappointed with hong kong officials' decision to let snowden to travel and urging russia to hand him over, but so far russian authorities have said they have no intention of doing so and say there's no international warrant for snowden's arrest and he

hasn't broken any laws here so they'll let him travel. >> you're there in moscow. does it seem as secretive what happened to the airport you being there as it does to us all the way in new york? >> reporter: i have to say it's rather interesting that the russians who claim that they had no information about snowden's travel plans did let those diplomatic cars on the tarmac to meet him, so at the very least the russians are turning a blind eye to this. >> abc's kirit radia in moscow for us this morning. thank you. we are just hours away from opening arguments in the trial of florida neighborhood volunteer watch george zimmerman. the question to be decided by a jury of six women is whether zimmerman committed murder when he shot 17-year-old trayvon martin in february of 2012 or was it self-defense? now, the trial is expected to take between two weeks and a month. jurors will be sequestered the entire time. federal investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash at an air show near dayton, ohio, as thousands of horrified spectators looked on. a wind walker and her pilot killed saturday when their

biplane suddenly rolled over, plummeted to the ground and exploded in a ball of fire. the ntsb says it could take six months to an entire year to determine the cause of that crash. more trouble for the embattled dreamliner. over the weekend a boeing 787 had to be diverted because of mechanical problems. and now the plane was supposed to go from houston to denver and on to tokyo but was forced to return to houston after an indicator light went on signaling a brake problem. this was the third united dreamliner diversion in the past week. well, this could be a blockbuster week for the supreme court. with just a week left in the term, the justices have yet to rule on gay marriage at the state and federal levels in addition to affirmative action and the voting rights act. the justices could also schedule a session on thursday if need be. all right, moving on to the weather across the nation, the upper midwest and great lakes region, you're going to see some severe storms, and there will be thunderstorms from the deep south all the way to the carolinas. rain in the pacific northwest. sunny and hot across the rockies and into the southwest. >> all right, well, phoenix is going to rise to 102 degrees.

of its drinks beginning tomorrow. the company says less than a third of its beverages will increase in price by about 1%. for example, a small brewed coffee will climb in price by about 10 cents. the increases will vary by region. starbucks points out that most customers haven't seen a price hike in two years. twinkies are coming back. the classic treat disappeared from store shelves last year when hostess went bankrupt. it's now under new management, and the company says twinkies will be back on july 15th. that's only three short weeks from today. the price will be the same as when they were last seen. a box of ten twinkies will set you back just $3.99. a small price to pay for ten twinkies if you ask me. and a new twist in the fast food industry. wendy's is rolling out its beefy bacon pretzel cheeseburger. hoping it becomes a game changer. premium burger with warm cheddar cheese sauce, ooh, cheddar cheese sauce, six slices of bacon between two

toasted pretzel buns, and it's packed with 680 calories. the pretzel burger is only available through the summer but that could change if it becomes a big seller. if you get your hands on it, they have nothing to worry about, wendy's. >> bring it on. i want one right now. shoppers will shell out more for the typical fourth of july fare. ground beef prices will go up 6%. chicken breast prices, they have jumped 25%, the highest since 2004. even the lowly potato is more expensive, about 10% over last year. you can blame the lingering effects of last year's drought and some slightly higher gas prices. "monsters" ruled at the weekend box office trouncing the zombies and superman. disney's "monsters university" debuting in top spot with 82 million bucks. families turned out in droves as billy crystal and john goodman reprised their characters from that 2001 hit "monsters, inc." brad pitt's "world war z" opened in second place and the "man of steel" was third. a man who truly deserves the "play of the day." what the winner of the boston marathon did to honor victims of

then carefully-baked to release steady energy that lasts. we're golfing now, buddy! i got it! belvita. steady energy. all morning long. firefighters in southwestern colorado say they still have zero containment of a roaring wildfire that has already scorched more than 100 square miles. and they say there's little hope of a break in the hot, dry windy conditions that are driving the flames until tomorrow at the very earliest. some 1500 people have been forced to flee, but so far no houses have been lost. all right, lots of people were looking up to the heavens over the weekend. i was one of them for the spectacle. we only see it once a year. it was the night of the super moon. >> beautiful images are pouring in of the biggest and brightest full moon of the year, the moment it is closest to the earth, just 221,000 miles away giving us a view that looks 13% bigger and 30% brighter. >> you know, i didn't know it was the super moon, but i knew it looked cool. >> it was bigger and brighter.

>> how about that. >> it was beautiful. let's take a look at road conditions. storms could cause problems in the great lakes and upper midwest and from the southeast into the mid-atlantic. there will also be wet roads in the pacific northwest. >> if you're flying, airport delays are possible in minneapolis, chicago, san francisco, atlanta and charlotte. well, a florida community is in mourning after the search for a missing little girl comes to a tragic end. the body of 8-year-old charish perriwinkle was found behind a church in jacksonville, convicted child molester donald james smith has been charged with abducting her and killing her. police say he met charish and her mother in a store and offered to buy the girl a dress. police tracked him down after he was seen leaving the store with charish but it was too late. >> we've got a lot of officers. we got a lot of sworn personnel, people who dedicated their lives to protecting people. it's hard. >> charish was supposed to go away with her dad on saturday. if convicted, smith could get the death penalty. funeral services are set thursday here in new york for the late james gandolfini. his body arrived in newark

airport last night. "the sopranos" star died last wednesday while on vacation in italy. an autopsy confirmed he died of a heart attack. his final resting place has not been made public yet. police in massachusetts remain tight lipped about their investigation of new england patriots tight end aaron hernandez. they spent several hours at his home on saturday. but they are not commenting on what they may have discovered. hernandez is being connected to a murder of odin lloyd, a 27-year-old semi-professional football player. his body was discovered near hernandez's house a week ago. texas lawmakers debating past midnight over some of the toughest abortion restrictions in the country. more than 1,000 abortion rights activists rallied at the state capitol in austin to protest this legislation. now, if passed, the bill would ban abortions after 20 weeks. it would also require that abortions take place in surgical centers. those restrictions would shut down 90% of the abortion clinics in texas. well, we've seen headlines about the promise of stem cells to cure disease. but could they also be used to

treat aches and pains from injuries? some doctors have already started giving the treatment to patients who suffered overuse injuries. 32-year-old eli wallhide says 12 years of weight lifting left him with crippling shoulder pain and nothing helped until now. >> within two days i was stronger than i had been in a dozen years. >> but other doctors are warning that there could be serious side effects such as stem cells becoming tumors. all right. new this morning the latest daring tightrope walk by nik wallenda. he did it late yesterday over the little colorado river. that's a gorge in northeastern arizona. wallenda spent just over 22 minutes on that wire some 1500 feet above the river. he jogged and hopped the last few steps before climbing down and kissing the ground. that was followed by hugs for his family. wallenda wore two cameras and a microphone for this stunt. he was heard whispering prayers almost the entire way, and he thanked god for dropping the wind while he was out there. the third tennis major event of the year, wimbledon, getting

under way this morning. men's number one seed and defending champion roger federer playing his first match today on that famous centre court. on the women's side serena williams is the top seed. she starts on a 31-match winning streak. williams has won wimbledon five times. >> but as she starts her run at number six, williams finds herself embroiled in controversy. and this has nothing to do with tennis and lots to do with one of her main rivals. abc's jeffrey kofman explains. >> reporter: if this is court, it is more like boxing than tennis. in this corner, superstar serena williams. and in this corner, top player, maria sharapova throwing a right punch. >> definitely a little bit sad to hear what she had to say about the whole case. >> reporter: in a pretournament press conference, sharapova called out williams over her recent comments about the notorious steubenville rain case in which a 16-year-old girl was raped and

two teenagers were sent to jail. >> we are so used to seeing sharapova and serena battle on the court and all of a sudden they're battling in press conferences. >> reporter: in a "rolling stone" magazine interview, williams implied the 16-year-old victim put herself in that position saying "your parents should teach you don't take drinks from other people." williams has since apologized, but the volleys get really nasty when the two talk about each other's love lives. williams on sharapova. "hey, if she wants to be with a guy with a black heart, go for it." nasty and confusing, sharapova's current boyfriend, grigor dimitrov, was rumored to be romantically linked to williams last year. sharapova, your serve. >> she wants to talk about something personal, you know, maybe we should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids. >> reporter: ouch. a jab at williams and her now rumored relationship with her coach. >> it is kind of surprising that sharapova, who is really a class act, would decide to go this
