in just eight hours, the u.s. supreme court is expected to issue a long-awaited decision on prop 8 and around the bay area people are awaiting the ruling that will change lives. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm carolyn johnson. among those awaiting the decision is lieu tenant governor gavin newsom. john alston spoke to him and newsom was there when they allowed gays to marry in 2004. >> these are some of the posters showing up here and announcing a rally on the day of the decision. up until now, nobody knows when that will be. they will know in the morning whether it will be a celebration or not. a mixture of anxiety and hopefulness on the eve of a decision that could change their lives. >> the tied is turning, but they would be stupid to not vote in our favor. >> i am hopeful. we have been waiting a

to us, but you could still tell he was a bit shaken. >> it was just like the discovery channel. you can see the eyes roll in the back of the head and the pink gums and his teeth beared. >> reporter: there is no doubt in his mind that it was a great white shark. >> and almost instantly the shark came and it lifted the boat up and then it grabbed uh hold of it and it started shaking the whole boat. i'm just hanging on to this thing. >> i had my paddle and a bottle of home brew and then everything i had went flying in there and it hit me so hard. >> michael was fishing a hundred yards off pedro point around 3:30 when it happened. he doesn't remember what came out of his mouth, but his father-in-law does. >> it was a lot of religious stuff, oh my god, oh my god! >> he was in his kayak 10 feet away. >> he was riding like a bull. i was like, go for it.

of rain in the north bay and setting records in all of these locations with asterisks. record rainfall for this date including .01 of an inch at livermore and that is because prior to today no june 25th rain was recorded in livermore. we'll have a look at the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> see you then. happening now, votes are being counted after bart workers just wrapped up deciding whether to authorize a strike. the members of five unions including train operators and maintenance workers are considering the first step in calling a strike after failing to reach an agreement in negotiations overpay and benefits. the contract expires on on sunday. the union says they will release the voting results. the transit information website 5-1-1.org already has a web page. follow us on twitter at abc7 news bay area. a double manhunt is underway in los angeles for two shooters and two separate

police ambushes. the most recent happened about 7:30 in south los angeles. you are looking at a live picture right now of where this all took place. a gunman hiding in an at tech opened fire on officers during a probation search. that lead to a shootout. one officer was shot in the neck and face. he was admitted for surgery. a parole officer was hit in the leg. officers surrounded the home, but it is not clear if the shooter is still inside this house. police believe it is not related to a shooting, but earlier gunfire was opened on officers returning after an undercover operation. both suffered minor injuries. a bay area team is suing the maker of monster energy drink saying their son died after drinking two cans a day for three years. he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest in july of 2012. the lawsuit filed today in alameda county accuses monster beverage of negligence. they say the company should warn customers that these drinks are dangerous to young

people, especially those with heart conditions. developing news, an embattled charter school lost its latest bid to stay open. the office of education revoked the charter of american indian model schools. in march they said they failed to address violations and the founder was accused of improperly using school funds. he is no longer with the school. they rank in the top of the nation. they will continue to fight. a boy was charged with murder after a bus stop shooting. two people were shot at a muni stop in the bay view district. rice died. the girl is expected to live. police arrested derrick hunter and a 14-year-old juvenile today. they tried to determine if anyone little was involved in this shooting. the victim was mauled by pittbulls and conquered eight years ago. that attack lead to a ban of

an emotional night to honor those who helped the city of santa cruz get through what many call the darkest day. the day two police officers, sergeant lauren butch baker and detective elizabeth butler were murdered on duty. tonight a chance to say thank you. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> the pain of the tragedy has been eased by the outpouring we have seen in support of the police department and the city. >> reporter: the city of santa cruz is still in mourning four months after the murders of sergeant lauren butch baker and detective elizabeth butler. the officers were gunned down while investigating a sexual assault. >> it has >> it has been horrific. i don't have words to describe how awful it has been for us. >> reporter: it is a daily struggle to move on without these veteran officers. about 80 organizations, businesses and people have helped ease the pain.

tonight the city showed itsgrat. gratitude. >> i want to say thank you. i appreciate it. >> reporter: few words have described what many have done these past weeks. from tending to the enormous memorial outside the police department after the shootings to allowing law enforcement to take over a family restaurant and use it as a command center the day of the murders. joe's pizza and subs shutdown to customers and still fed officers and catered to their needs. >> in a situation like this, it does not require anybody to open the door. but we opened it for the community. >> for that decision, the city said thank you. >> many of the people honored tonight were recognized because of their financial donations to the baker and butler scholarship funds. that has raised nearly half a million dollars for the officers families. lisa amin gulezian, abc news. a landlord in san francisco is facing charges involving claims he has been terrorizing his renters. it is a story you will see

only on abc news. a tenant recorded the incident that lead to the arrest yesterday. it is a permanent building near golden gate park. he is accused of breaking into a unit. police arrested him after a struggle that left an officer with injured knee. there is also video of what appears to be sable attacking a renter. >> get out of my face. >> you just struck me. that is a [bleep] felony. >> he has just made life so miserable for people that are struggling to work and pay their rent on time with no peace, no tranquil tee in their home. >> three current and former tenants are suing. police say they received a number of complaints about this landlord. he has been accused of failing to provide heat and water. he refused our request for an interview. new at 11:00, fremont police are looking for burglars who used a u haul van to steal a van.

the burglars couldn't lift the atm because it was bolted down. they had to ram it twice with the u haul to loosen the bolts enough to grab it. it is all very similar to a smash and grab in oakland last thursday. that's what you are looking at here. surveillance video show them using a chain to rip the atm free. there is no indication that the robberies are connected by the way. halle berry testified against paparazzi at the state capitol today. berry supports a bill to stop photographers from focusing on children for public figures. the on going problem with paparazzi is traumatic for her daughter. the actress showed photos of a recent incident at los angeles international airport. >> have i to yell she's a child. leave my child alone. leave my child alone. we get into the car and my darr is sobbing and she says, mommy are they going to kill us? are they trying to kill us? >> the bill would aggressi aggressive paparazzi and allow for civil lawsuits where

children are harassed. several media groups oppose the bill saying it is too loosely written and it could impede news gatherings. >> let's refocus on the weather. summer will resume shortly. >> spencer christian is here now. >> at least we don't have rainfall at this moment. we are not picking up any precipitation around the bay area at the moment. we have lots of moisture in the air and the fog is developing and there could be sprinkles before this is all over. looking back at the skyline, the temperature readings are mild. 65 in oakland and 68 at mountain view and at san jose. 59 in half moon bay. another live view from the camera in the east bay where you can see the fog is getting thicker. we have a clearer view five minutes ago. santa rosa 64 and 67 in livermore and union city and los gatos. now looking back at coit tower from our rooftop camera at abc7 and these are our

forecast features. we will see some fog and perhaps drizzle as i mentioned there is lots of moisture in the air. we will be drying out and it will be warm to hot by week's end. let's look at what is happening in the atmosphere. the composite image shows the passage of the warm front that brought us the steady flow of the humid and mild air. the air mass is with us, but it will be getting out of here over the next 24 hours or so. let's start the animation. lots of clouds around. areas of fog are developing and potential of drizzle near the coast and the north bay during the overnight and the early morning hours. probably not enough to really interfere with the early morning commute. and by late tomorrow afternoon and going into the evening commute we should have mainly sunny skies and dry conditions and a warmer day than we had today. high temperature trend over the next week for livermore which is indicative of what we can expect in most of the inland locations. high temperatures will be climbing into the upper 90s by the end of the week and by

monday, 103 degrees in livermore and many other locations will see highs above a hundred on sunday and monday as well. fog, maybe drizzle and low temperatures mainly from the upper 50s to the low 60s and tomorrow's highs in the south bay, low 80s and 82 in san jose and upper 70s to 80 in the peninsula and places like redwood city and mountain view. low to mid60s on the coast downtown fran -- san francisco high 60s 82 in santa rosa and calistoga, 83 in napa. east bay highs, 80 in union city. 85 at wall not creek and 84 at concord. here is the seven-day forecast. look at the warm upcoming our way. friday and saturday, inland highs in the upper 90s. sunday and monday highs from 102-104 in the warmest inland locations and the temperatures will drop off a few degrees on tuesday. we will have an extended period of rather hot weather. but that's summer. >> it is. we'll take it. >> not the way it has been the
