the supreme court's decision on proposition 8 was not the only big decision on same-sex marriage today. >> the supreme court overturned doma, prohibiting the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. the suit follow by an 83-year-old who spent 44 years with her partner. the two got married in canada. when thea died she was hit with a tax bill because the federal government didn't recognize her as a widow. she took the case all the way to the supreme court and today, won. >> if i had to survive thea

and might take a few days to dissolve the prior opinion. and so, likely a month before we actually -- . >> clerks are beginning the process. >> that is right. governor brown has an order asking for the county clerks to get ready for the process. that will be a month, at least before marriage licenses begin to issue. >> let's talk about doma. that is a broader decision today. talk about the impact. but what impact more broadly that is likely to happen on gay marriage in this country. >> so, doma was a historic decision. as you said, it's broader and a constitutional decision. the idea the federal government can define marriage after doma is in doubt.
