of backup with busy conditions. it is 6:00, still early, so get an early start or telecommute if you can. back to you, kristen and eric. >> thanks, leyla gulen. >> abc7 news reporters are covering the bart strike. transportation reporter. heather? >> we are outside the bart station with a total of two bart commuter whose have shown up unaware a strike had begun but they figured it out greeted by pickets. a firm supervisor is among the picketers. some started at midnight when the strike was called. negotiations were not looking good last week, a move from the bart headquarters willing to neutral ground didding in to

improve the situation and negotiators walked away at 8:30 saying they were at an impasse over the same issues from the beginning. the wages, medical, pension and consumer safety commission is the top issue for the union workers. ken is a strike captain out here. >> a couple of years ago in south hayward a guy was beat to a bloody pull be with blood all over the inside and they had to have a crime scene team clean up the booth. they have done nothing and they don't feel safer. >> are you advised? what are your thoughts? >> there was a high probability so i am not surprised. >> when you saw the pickets, what happened? >> disappointed but i have to make adjustments.

>> the commuter, eugene, was parked a block away at the bart parking lot and three was going to hop in the car and head over to the ferry station or the terminal and get to work on time in san francisco. the last trains departed at 1:30 this morning stopping at 2:00 am and would normally have started again at 4:30 but that is not the case today with those who would manage the trains are now manning pickets. >> as we mentioned, official word of the strike came down just after midnight. some commuters are just fining out this morning. amy hollyfield is in walnut creek, one of four bart stakes with bus pickup. >> i have good news for commuters this is a good

opening, look behind me. the bus is waiting to fill up, there is not a line of people. there are several buses standing by at walnut creek ready to go. they are empty. i don't know if people know of the objection our maybe they decided to take the day off or work from home but if you need to get to the city there are free shuttles at walnut creek, ready to go. this is not an option, video of the last bart train from over night, this is right after the strike was announced and the trains were parked. commuters say they were feeling anxious when they realized this would be a strike wondering how they would get to work and some decided to grab the shuttles. this got here in the middle of the night they were so worried to get a seat the. >> i have to commute to san francisco and will change buses in downtown san francisco. it was great to have the free

shuttle. i am not sure but i hope my boss will see i am on my way. >> the stations where you can grab a shuttle: el cerrito, walnut creek, we dublin/pleasanton, and fremont. they will be available from 5:00 to 9:00 this morning and each because holds 56 people but in walnut creek there are several ready to go and empty and ready to take you to the city if you need a ride. they estimate they will be able to shultz 2,000 to 4,000 people and it depends on people and how quickly the buss can get around. >> interestingly our vice president of programming at abc7 news was one of the many people would waited for the shuttle so he will be happy to get in. casual carpooling is an alternative to cross the bay with 20 casual carpool in the east bay.

passengers are dropped off in downtown san francisco at fremont with extra stops beginning at 3:30 this afternoon. the bart strike promises to make the bay bridge toll plaze a parking lot. and now from oakland. cornell? >> we are seeing that, the commuter crush is on, bay bridge toll plaza is backing up into the maze mostly in the cash-paying lanes but we have fast track lanes, paing up, too, and folks are angry with all the lanes open including car pool lanes. i talked to caltran a short time ago and it is all hands on deck and extra toll takers have been brought in early to prepare for the crush of cars expected to come through today.

that is exactly what we are seeing because bart trains are not running. if you do not usually drive to work the doll is $6 until 10:00 a.m. and it is back to $4 until the afternoon and carpool lanes are the best option. the metering lights are on. they came on 30 minutes early and traffic reporter leyla gulen tells me this kind of backup is very unusual to had 6:00 hour. a lot of drivers are honking and expressing their anger. a driver had to get at 3:15 to make the commute from antioch. a lot stressed out drivers and drivers who are saying they have in option but to get in the car.

people are gathering for the next bus. many commuters woke up an hour early to catch a bus in downtown oakland because of the bart strike. the first bus in san francisco after 5:30 and you can see it was packed with 20 more people boarding at 20th and broadway. a woman told me she prepared for the strike. >> we picked up a hotel downtown because we have one car for two of us going different direction and both rely on bart. we are working it out. ange transit is not striking allowing riders an alternative. a.c. transit will run a shuttle to the transbay terminal. we have seen people show up at the bart station not realize there was a strike and they walked over to the bus station. the next bus leaves at 6:33.

>> the buses will end up in san francisco. abc7 news reporter, katie marzullo, is at the transbay terminal. >> we started to see the buses rolling in and out. they are packed. if you can look across here, they are letting people off along the other said at main. it is hard to see from this point. we talked with people getting east buses, people who normally take bart knew all about and it they had a plan. the plan was to get up early and catch a bus. >> the ride was fine but they used a double bus which usually they don't have. it was full. >> i left home at 4:30 and got to the bus stop and it came at 5:00 but not bad overall. >> the positive attitude so far.

the woman said she got up, usually leaving at 6:30, so that was early for her. a.c. transit running extra buses and extra seating. you can see the double bus. bart is chartering buses, and sol train is providing shuttles from vallejo and there are other link services across the bay. >> thank you, katie marzullo. ferry service is expected to be busy this morning and abc7 news reporter continues coverage from jack london square in oakland. wayne? >> expected to be an ordeal for the ferry. to get a ferry you have to by a tick the here. you stand in one lane. then you have to go over here. first ferry boat left at 6:00

a.m. this morning which had 198 passengers on board off to the city of san francisco and when it left there were more passengers waits -- waiting. this is for south san francisco and another line on the left is all the people waiting for new ferry boat number two but ferry boat three or four. the service says they have an extra 50,000 seats available, 25,000 in each direction leaving every 45 minutes. as we said it will be an ordeal. rather be going any other way than here this morning. >> thanks, wayne. we will turn it over to leyla gulen in the traffic center. you have been checking the bay

area roads. >> we have sky 7 over this didn't a few moments ago and it is a sig-alert westbound 80 at cummings skyway so we have plenty of traffic with lanes blocked and some lanes are re-opening at this time but they are living up with 30 minutes from vallejo into el cerrito so at the hoffman split we have heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic and at willow avenue the accident is cleared. it has left the damage. if you are coming across the cartinez expect plenty of traffic. the bridge is moving along fine but if you are trying to make the drive from vallejo into crockett and toward hercules it is a mess and not what we needed. we will see what is happening from sky 7 h.d., that is a picture of berkeley toward the

maze. it looks like the drive between albany to the maze is 20 minutes and we are starting to see a huge backup along the bay bridge toll plaza and for now, we will see some good news for mike nicco. >> it will be excessively hot again and live doppler 7 hd showing a week ago we were dealing with rain and highs in the 50's and 60's where our temperatures are now in the south bay and 58 in los altos hills and everyone sells in the throw mid 60's. in the morning, 63 in the lower elevations around los gatos but the hills it is already 77 so the air, the warmer air is lurking around 500 to a thousand feet waiting for the sun to remain what the ground and it will warm rapidly today. 55 in novato and 56 in richmond

and half moon bay. those are the cool spots and everyone else in the low-to-mid 60's but brentwood is almost 71. from sutro tower, high clouds and not a "spare the air" day with dangerous heat through thursday and the weekend is looking a lot more comfortable. in the bay we will have low-to-mid 90's and 95 in san jose but upper 90's around los gatos and reaching over100 in morgan hill and gilroy and 90's on the peninsula to redwood city and 87 in san mateo and 80 compared to everyone else and mid-to-upper 60's along the coast to 78 in downtown and 80 in south san francisco and north bay is in the mid-to-upper 90's and sausalito is 86 and the east bay shore at 83 at berkeley and 93 at hercules and fremont and the east bay valley. car could hit 110 with high clouds and sunshine and that will keep our temperatures in

traffic headed further into berkeley and toward the maze. the drive coming from orinda and beyond 13 to highway 24 at 21 miles per hour is the top speed and six miles per hour at 680 toward emeryville and 26 miles per hour is the top speed headed into berkeley. from the maze to san francisco that is 30-minute commute. very slow conditions. at look at walnut creek shows southbound 680 is 20 minutes with 24 sluggish and packed condition because of the bart strike. >> bart workers went on strike admit night and union members apologized claiming bart would not seriously address the safety concerns and workers' compensation if -- for injuries on the job. >> it is unfortunate. hundreds thousands of people have to fine different ways to

get around or take a day off from work. both sides want do come to an agreement and reasonable minds can disagree about what a fair contract is. >> they are disagreeing. bart workers are moving to the plaza to hold a rally at 7:00 this morning. our transportation reporter is headed there to give you coverage of that. >> the bart workers will be joined by city workers of oakland on strike with a joint rally at 7:00 a.m. with picketing. coverage continues on the bart strike with abc7 news reporter at walnut creek station. amy, there are buses. are there enough buses? >> it is running very smoothly here in walnut creek. the bus behind me is waiting to fill up. there are people open board but it will not leave until it is full. there are several empty buts behind it waiting to go.t here s

are explaining how the process works. people wait in line and board the bus. each holds 56 people. >> it is very orderly of the not too crowded. plenty of parking. bus is the way to go. i don't think that is too bad for can a.m. with the buses ready. >> you can catch the shuttle at walnut creek and dublin/pleasanton and in fremont. they are available starting at 5:00 a.m. and until 9:00 a.m. with 58 buses. it is thought they will fit 2,000 to 4,000 people in this morning but in walnut creek it looks like not everyone is take advantage with empty buses waiting to take people to the city for free. this is going smoothly. it is easy. what happens when it gets on the road could be a different story.

packed but the passengers say it paid to have a land and to start really early this morning. >> go with a.c. transit. i was glad they were going. >> i didn't like the idea of getting caught in traffic or not knowing what route or bus i would take. didn't know if i would get here. >> there are extra a.c. transit buses this morning and sol tran is actually picking up what would be bart riders if vallejo and bringing them here and has a supervisor on sight to guide the buses to the terminal because the bus drivers have never been here before. >> a first for so many people. in the north by right now ferry service is underway at the ferry terminal with the first ferry leaving before 6:00 this morning and 200 passengers took the first ferry of the day. usually it is 1 accident to a

lot of people showed up early to ait have the hectic commute. >> got here early to miss the crowd. i know the people who drive normally will want to get off the road. >> there is no added service because there is no overflow parking available so no extra capacity. so far, so good. >> so far, it is not so good. leyla gulen? >> we started seeing problems this morning and it was quiet and we had a lot of accidents. that added insult to injury because we had plenty of congestion. we the sig-alert still in effect westbound 80 from crockett at cummings highway one lane is blocked and the backup fromllej7

making the drive in the westbound direction and bumper-to-bumper traffic because of several vehicles. closer to the hoffman split in el cerrito westbound we have an accident blocking a lane and further to the south as you continue in the east bay, southbound 880 the car pool lane is not good news on a day like today with the carpool lane blocked out at top speed at nine miles per hour. a wide view of san jose everything is grown but 101 in the northbound direction headed away from 880. from tracy to the amount pass bumper-to-bumper traffic more than an hour to get you out of tracy. at the tolls, it appears the center lanes are starting to move so we are going do find out if the metering lights are on and the cash-paying lanes are bumper-to-bumper traffic.
