we're tracking the evening commute now underway on this first day of the bart strike. you're looking at the approach to the bay bridge. you can see traffic on your

right is just crawling along towards the lower deck backed up as we approach the evening hours here. commuters crowding on to buses, ferries and freeways after bart workers went on strike for the first time since 1997. good afternoon, everyone. >> here are the latest developments now on the bart strike. there are no sked yumed talks at the moment. these workers picketing outside montgomery station in san francisco. >> bart is asking to return to the bargaining table and union leaders say they're waiting for bart to offer a better offer. >> sky 7 shows you back up today, take a look at this mess. maybe you got caught in it. traffic officials report commutes from east bay into san francisco took about an hour longer than usual and the situation is expected to be the same tonight. >> let's take a look outside right now. this is the san francisco skye way.

you see traffic is on the lower deck of the bay bridge heading east and it's slow going but much lighter for drivers haetding out of san francisco towards 101. >> here is a live look at traffic on the golden gate bridge. you can see at 4:02 before the evening commute gets going in earnest, very smooth sailing at this moment on the golden gate bridge. bart doesn't go into that direction. >> we have live team coverage. >> let's begin live where a union rally will get underway in been b.an hour from now. >> officials are calling on union leaders come back to the table. now, the union is holding rallies. this is set for an hour from now. they say they're doing to it try to get media attention for the story. today there was a bigger rally,

much bigger in oakland. let me take you there. officials told a crowd of several hundred that bart management has not put a credible proposal on the table. >> we want to go back to negotiate, too. but have to have their commitment they're going to negotiate in good faith. >> the chief negotiator says it's only 3% because employees would have to kickback 5% to a pension plan. and remaining 3% would be based on performance so the race could be $1 a year. >> if the terms are incorrect the place to figure that out is at the negotiating table and we're not there, talking

about it. >> so there is a fair amount of gainsmanship being played here, in broad strokes union asked for 5% a year over three years, and cost of living increases. now they're saying they'll take 4.5% plus cost of living. management offering 2% a year but want contributions increased and -- they want contributions to the plan, period they want increased contributions to the health care coverage so they're still far apart, both sides. on the money now, the union is raising issues of safety concerns. they're saying we want better lighting and more man power but proposals called for a pay increase, safety concerns being raised, maybe as much for pr as for negotiating. but we, right now have both sides far apart, and no word they're headed back to the

assigned sfnpa traffic enforcement officer saying he's here because of the strike. he is trying to make a smooth transition for everyone trying to get on the bay bridge there. you can see them lined up. every direction at a stand still with small bursments of movement. you think of more people carpool there would be fewer cars on the rode, -- road, right? the perks of carpooling expanlded today. what mtc has done to encourage people to share a ride across the bay bridge. i'll have that coming up at 5:00. >> it's sticky out there let check in now with traffic reporter. >> that is right. another option to just stay in the city, hang out with friends but if you can't do that you're going have have to grin and bear it.

right now, if you're traveling along the skyway your freeway down to five miles per hour. it's at a crawl making it up to the bay bridge. that is going to be into the east bay. here is a drive coming up through berkeley. towards highway 4 that is another 30 minute commute so still very busy. this drive heading away from dublin is going to be a 45 minute drive. we can take a look there and it's moving well but that is a into hayward. >> take a look now this, is the bay bridge toll plaza. westbound is the don commute direction at this time of the day. it's smooth sailing. traffic began backing up 45

minutes earlier than normal. things got worse as more people jumped into their cars. the commute didn't loosen up until around noon. one truck overheat ntd back up. he said it took 90 minutes to make a 10-mile drive. >> did you know there was hay bart strike? >> yes. that is why i left two hours to get into the city. and i'm not going to make it. >> the long back up tempted some drivers today try to use the carpool lanes but it didn't work. chp had patrols in place. they pulled over dozens of drivers and cited them. >> one thing noticed is how empty the center of fast track lanes were. look at this, this is video about 7:30 this morning. lack of traffic probably because of the number of bart riders jumping into their cars. and anyone using is encouraged

yesterday fighting a massive wildfire in arizona. >> three firefighters were from southern california. the fire has grown to 8400 acres and still threatening 250 homes. >> abc 7 news has the very latest on this tragedy. >> the firefighters being remembered with 19 roses at their fire station. a 21-year-old son of a california fire captain was on the elite team noun as -- known as granite mountain hot shots. >> it's not the -- he loved to be around people. loved to help people. >> something went wrong on sunday, flames pushed by winds surrounded the squad. the group deployed fire shelters to protect them selfs from the heat and flames. but the inferno was too powerful. the president praised them as

here is a look at live doppler 7 hd. sunny skies, two low clouds off shore but they're no cooling western sky, mainly clear skies, temperatures 71 degrees in san francisco. 90 san jose. 76 santa cruz. another live view showing a little bit of low clouds working towards golden gate. perhaps here in the city of san francisco it's 92 in santa rosa right now. 100 at livermore. 94 at los gatos. looking at lake tahoe we'll have heat with us through wednesday. hottest day will be tomorrow. cooling begins by the end of the week. so hold on until friday.

you can see a huge hot air mass slowly working westward causing this big warm up. hot weather lasts through wednesday. we'll see high clouds moving throughout the area. so highs in interior western u.s. inclurding state of california tomorrow. numerous locations highs over 100 degrees. redding 116. never night, lows in the mid-60s then tomorrow's highs in the south bay mid-90s to above 100. 96 in san jose. low 70s on the coast.

it's traffic gridlock out there now this, is the first day of the bart strike. sky 7 live on 6th street. >> right now there are no scheduled talks between bart and the union. abc 7 news lillian kim continues our coverage what. a mess. >> hp transit workers say lines don't typically start to form until well after 3:00. today they started around 1:00. take a look. lines are long. and much longer than usual according to people who regularly take the bus across the bay.

buses are jam packed and ac worker told me this is a change from a typical day. they usually have a b.a dozen or so empty seats. early birds were forced to wait a while commuters are frustrated and tired as the strike added several hours to their commute. >> we're going to be waiting for the second bus. >> how long do you think this is going to add? >> two to three hours just to go to lake merit. >> crazy. go back to work. figure this out. do something. >> most people from the east bay stayed home and telecommuted. >> i had meeting i wanted to do. tomorrow is the last day of vacation. i wanted to be in the office. >> do you regret making that decision? >> absolutely. i should have stayed home.

>> many opted to casual carpool. two new waiting areas have been temporarily added and the wait for a ride has been long. people say they've been waiting an hour at least. that is the latest from san francisco. >> thank you. >> more than three times as many people rode the ferry into san francisco because of the strike. >> that is many say they skip zipped through traffic. one woman was waiting in a bus stop watching buses full of passengers whiz by her. >> they didn't even slow down. these two guys in a nice suv pulled up and asked if anyone needed to go to the city.

the three of us got n it was awesome. >> a representative was there to help riders then get to their destination autos again, roads are just jam packed so are the ferries three times as many people rode from jack london square into san francisco this morning because of the strike. >> take a look this, is what it looked like around 9:00 this morning. wait averaged about 40 minutes at the height of the morning commute. >> abc 7 wayne freedman talked with commuters who got up very early. >> in jack london square, neon spelled ferry and spelled frustration. a race to be first. >> what is your fear now? >> not being able to get to work on time. >> you would normally be here at this hour?

we're looking at a baby gorilla named gladys and how she's bonding with her new surrogate mother. >> this is video of a tentative gladys meeting her new mom who inched her way to the young gorilla who gently picked her up. >> the 5 mold was orphanned when her mother rejected her so 10 human surrogates prepared gladys wearing fake fur, feeding and grooming her in the way mother gorilla would. today's video it appears preparations have paid off. >> that looks like it's working well. >> in shasta county record temperatures meant cooling off by any means necessary. this large bear captured on video taking a dip.

this is day one of the bart strike and it's tough getting around out there. we want to taek you live on the drive towards the bay bridge right now. >> he is at 8th and harrison. there is going to be a delay. >> still moving slow out there on the approach to the bay bridge. the -- traffic is certainly

isolated to the surface streets. once on the bridge it's not too bad. once through the tunnel traffic just takes off. he told me he hasn't experienced problems yet and told me it's profit mostly traffic piling up on streets getting onto the freeways to head back over the bay. it's, i can describe as a crawl. they do have traffic control officers at intersections coming up here on 8th and bryant. they're letting through one or two cars at a time. so key is slow, slow, slow and patience, i guess.

>> anna wants to know how do i stop landlord intrusions? >> well, kind of depends on what is going on. landlords in the state of california are allowed to intrude a lot. they have to give you 24 hour notice but after thark let me show you the reasons they're allowed to enter. first, to make necessary repairs. if there is a problem they're allowed to get m to fix it. to show perspective tenants or a buyer of the unit or home they're awe a.loued to do that. tenant if you move out they've got to give you 24 hours notice then they're allowed to wanlder. if a court ordered them, sou can't keep them out. when you're renting in california it's not like ownership. it's renting. two different thing autos vicky r asked can stores sell expired goods legally? >> yes. only thing they cannot sell that is expired is baby form
