11:00 am
>> abc7 news starts right now with breaking news. >> day two of the bart strike. still no sign of the transit age and the would beers getting closer to a deal. this morning's commute was more crowd than monday as more hopped into their cars. >> the commuters who did not drive packed on buses and ferries. hundreds were shoulder to shoulder on the ferry and so many decided to ride the bus provided by bart that the service had trouble keeping up with demand.
11:01 am
>> good morning, bay area commuters are not finding it easier to cope with the second day of living without bart service. for many, the morning was harder. >> we have team coverage following negotiations with laying monitoring traffic. we have heather at the late station, any sign the two sides are talking? >> no signs. just a lost picket signs. no signs of talking, nothing planned scheduled for today but the unions are meeting with themselves internally today both of saying they are waiting for the other to make the right move to get them back to the table but it is not clear what the move is. each union is meeting on its own to "plan their next move" saying they are eager for this to get

done. so far --. >> we are hopeful they will come back to the table and bring substantive information to bargain. >> the same mediator trying to bridge the gap and he is the one who is responsible for making sure both parties get to the barring aning table. the pick it lines are manned 94 hours and the workers are saying they are in this for the long hall, and they saw this strike coming and they are prepared with their family lives and personal finances. again, nothing scheduled for today but anything could happen and a lot of it seems to rest in the hands of the state mediators live at lake merritt bart station. >> lots of noise out there, thank you. thousands of commuters arose a little earlier today and some of them a lot earlier hoping to
11:03 am
beat the traffic. we were overhead as traffic slowed to a call through the toll plains and cornell has been covering the back of the patrol plaza. is it any better? >> traffic is easing a bit at the bay bridge but we have yet to see the end of the morning commute. the cash lanes are jammed and backed to the maze with the metering lights still on. the commute started early with traffic snarling about 4:30 a.m. and chances are that some drivers who were stuck in monday's terrible commute didn't want to do that again so they left extra early. the trouble is, thousands of others had the same idea and the result was gridlock.
11:04 am
[ inaudible ] what do you think of the traffic? >> horrible. ridiculous. we need to be on time to work and this is a lot of people that need to be on time to wherever they go and they need to do something. >> crews are working nonstop towing cars that have overheated or run out gas and calmed the nerves of angry drivers. there have been a lot of carpool drivers, cars also that are not carpools reversing in the carpool lanes to get back in the cash lanes and clearly that is illegal and c.h.p. is urging people not to do that because it is really dangerous. the afternoon commute is just hours away.
11:05 am
>> we will check with leyla gulen to talk about where it is easing and where it is not. >> it is easing in quite a few places as we look at the golden gate bridge, we will update you on this situation, a sig-alert, but no lanes are blocked. if you and why that is, a big rig tried to get through a wrong toll lane so it was stuck, it was wedged there. we are trying to get the integrity out of there and it is causing spectator slowing but other than that, just a five-minute drive from sausalito to san francisco. richmond san rafael bridge is at top speed and this is where we see the delays from emeryville to san francisco. 53 miles per hour, though, when you pass the toll. the rest of the bay area, 580, westbound, from tracy to dublin, 31 minutes, and 14 minutes along westbound 80 from highway four through berkeley to the maze and 101 as you head southbound from sausalito to san francisco is 14-minute drive. >> bart shuttle service across the bay proved more popular than

ever this morning and owen doubling the service was not enough. abc7 news >>reporter:s from the dublin/pleasanton bart station. >> bart shuttle buses are growing in popularity with some commuters dri on the first day of the strike decided to sample the bus today. >> driving was good. i wanted to save my money. i found out they had a bus out here so i decided to try it. >> there were those who worked from home yesterday but could not pull that off two days in a row. >> i need to get to work and rebook a computer and be there for a while. i'll be back early. >> where were you yesterday? >> home. working. >> using it for the first time. well see. it is good. it is convenient. >> bart officials expected this increase and doubled the number of buses that took people into san francisco today. an where added the west oakland
11:07 am
people could catch the buses. other stations included fremont, walnut creek, el cerrito and dublin/pleasanton. in pleasanton the boarding process went smoothly and there were plenty of buses. of course, that is just the beginning. then comes the traffic. last night, bus passengers said it was a long ride. >> i work in the financial district and we left at 6:00 and got home after two hours. >> officials are spending $100,000 a day on the buses but with demand going up they are looking into having more buses available tomorrow. speaking of buses, look at this line at the a.c. transit bus in downtown oakland at 20th broadway some waiting two hours to get a ride across the bay. abc7 news reporter tell us that the lines today were longer than yesterday in spite of the added service. a.c. transit is runninghree
11:08 am
buses an hour rather than the normal two and that still did not help a lot of people get to work on time. >> how long did you give yourself to get to san francisco? >> about an extra 40 minutes. >> will that be enough today? >> looking at the sign that said 77 minutes? no. but it is all right. >> at least they are calm. they are planning ahead for the commuter tomorrow with people rising before 7:00 a.m. are having a better experience headed into the city than those would arrive at 7:00 a.m. that is the clue. >> we have the information you need to get through the bart strike including all your commute options on our website at abc7 news abc7news.com. you can down close the traffic app to navigate the freeways and follow us on twitter. owe -- our our top story a suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of two employees

11:10 am
the gunshot victims at the wing stop were targeted. >> it is not random. it is excellent when the community is involved and officers can speak with witnesses. that is key in being able to make a quick arrest. we made an arrest in less than eight hours. >> the chief went on to talk about the need for community. members to step up when they see something. he said that information was key and identifying the first suspect in less than eight hours. the chief also went on to tell me that his investigators know the identity of the second suspect and believe it is only a matter of time before they find him. at least one of the two suspects is from oakland. both men are in their 20's. later today oakland police will speak to community shop owners and let them know the status of the investigation. when we learn that, we will post the information on our website.
