good evening, and thank you for joining us i'm dan abramss, the attorneys here have been duking it out for over a week. it was just miles from here that trayvon martin was shot and killed, 18 months ago. after that rainy night, passions were stirred, and criminal charges filed. but now, there are questions and some fears about what could happen, would happen, if he is found not guilty today, the

jockeying began early as the prosecution struggles to save its case against george zimmerman. >> reporter: when the jurors arrived, they were told to forget, ignore a crucial piece of testimony from a key prosecution witness. >> you are to disregard the question and answer. >> reporter: the lead detective, chris serino, came close to saying he believed george zimmerman's account about what happened the night george zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin. >> so if we were to take pathological liar off the table? >> reporter: judge deborah nelson ruled that serino could not offer an opinion about another witness's credibility, a sure victory for a prosecution trying to shore up its case against the neighborhood watch volunteer. >> and there is no address. this is the back of the house.

>> reporter: the prosecutor continued questioning the detective who had been with zimmerman during the reenactment in the days following the incident. the detective talked about questions he would have had as to why zimmerman would have left his car after calling the police. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> okay, you don't need to do that. >> reporter: george zimmerman parked his car on a rainy night, and getting his bearings, getting an address. the prosecution said it didn't make sense, that he lived in the neighborhood and was too far from his car. they believed he followed trayvon martin, they said he didn't need to do that. >> when the defendant turns and points on video, saying there is no address because it is the back of the house, right to the right, what is there? is there a house with an address? >> yes, there is. >> reporter: the question, should zimmerman have been able

to easily see that address that night? or should he have have already known it? >> you pointed out there were three addresses? >> reporter: but the attorney pointed out he had no evidence that zimmerman had actually followed martin. >> is there anything at all to suggest at that time that mr. zimmerman continued to follow mr. martin? >> at which point, sir? >> at the point that the officer said or -- non-emergency operator said we don't need you to do that, and mr. zimmerman said okay. >> i would say that there was? >> what evidence would you have? >> the location -- the end location, the location where the incident ultimately ended. >> reporter: how that incident ended was recounted in court today by mark osterman, a federal marshal and self-described friend of

zimmerman' zimmerman's. >> reporter: prosecutors called him to show what they say is an inconsistency, that zimmerman told his friend that trayvon martin grabbed at his gun, rather than zimmerman just fearing martin was about to reach for it as he told police. >> do you recall that he said he was reaching for it? >> i thought he had said he had grabbed the gun. i have only heard the story twice, and whether it was grabbed the gun, grabbed for the gun, i just -- perhaps it was just the intent. >> reporter: this comes on the heels of many legal analysts that say the testimony of witnesses, have been helping the defense more than the prosecution. we asked the sanford chief of police about his officers' testimony. >> the testimony is the testimony. i believe they're providing the testimony that took place that evidence in a professional matter, that is what they're

supposed to be doing on the stand. >> reporter: many speculate about a possible not guilty verdict. and some fear an uproar from those unwilling to accept that outcome. >> george zimmerman is found not guilty? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: is your office ready for that? >> i believe we have plans that will be able to deal with issues as they arise. >> reporter: i assume the worse case scenario would be riots? >> and again, i would say we're not talking about riots. we're talking about rallies. if people choose to come to sanford and voice their opinions or want to come in a rally, we welcome it. we want to have people able to express themselves. >> reporter: chief smith took the job just months ago, a transplant from chicago, married to a white woman for 15 years. he was disappointed to find race still an issue for some in this corner of the south. >> reporter: was there an issue for you getting this job? >> there was some talk about officers who didn't want to work

for a black chief. >> reporter: in this day and age, there are white officers saying they don't want to work for a black chief? >> yeah, that was kind of the rumor. >> reporter: at the colonial restaurant, a community institution for 30 years, these customers look over the details of the case. she remembers there was a time when sanford was aggressively divided by race. >> i have grandsons that age, and they walk around with hoodies and sweat shirts on, and it could have been one of them. >> reporter: but both white and black residents say they don't expect any response to be violent. >> i don't think anybody will tear up things in the city. we can handle things appropriately, no matter what the verdict is. >> i think we'll get up the next day, it will be another day. we have to keep moving forward. >> we're all trying to move on from the incident that happened. we're not saying we're

forgetting what happened. but we're learning. and this courthouse is a stepping stone for what will happen with the community. >> reporter: zimmerman's attorney is aware of the racial component. especially since there is no african-americans on the jury. >> i would have liked to have a diverse jury, those people that would have wanted to complain would have less of a reason to complain. >> reporter: but some say it is entirely premature to prepare for a not guilty verdict. >> i have looked at the jury. they're engaged. they're taking notes, there is a favor for the prosecution. >> reporter: there was an instagram photo posted by the defense attorney don west. the controversial selfy shows west and his daughters holding ice cream. the caption reads we beat

stupidity. followed by the hash tag "dad ki killed it." today there was reaction after the controversial subject of the witness, jeantel. they believe that the testimony is crucial and that they treat the witnesses with respect. the defense responded saying that the picture was taken before jeantel took the stand and has nothing to do with her testimony. west said that since the photo went viral, he and his family have personally received threats of rape, and other violence, should my family's whereabouts become known, a firm reminder that this case is being tried inside and outside the courthouse. stay with abc news for full coverage of the zimmerman trial. next up. texas is a meat lover's heaven. we go straight to the experts in search of barbecue worth traveling for.
