>> the morning after. new information is emerges about the deadly crash at sfo. federal investigators begin their initial investigation of the wreckage. good morning, i'm carolyn tyler, thanks for joining us.

>> and i'm kristin. she are the latest developments in the crash of the asiana 214 passenger jet at sfo. >> investigators with the national transportation safety board are on the scene. they have conducted a preliminary inspection of the plane wreckage shortly after arriving at sfo around 11:30 last night. >> in fact the ntsb chairwoman flew into the bay ear last night. she tells us they have recovered both of the so-called black box that is include flight information data and pilots' voices and both are being flown to d.c., as you mentioned, for analysis. >> and asiana airlines is confirm the two passengers killed in the crash are 16-year-old girls from china and we've learned they were part of a 35-member group of middle school students and teachers taking part in a summer camp in los angeles. the night originated in shanghai with a stop in seoul, south korea. >> at least 49 were in bay area hospitals in critical condition.

as of late last night. the hospitals have not updated the condition of their patients this morning but as soon as they do we will bring that to you. >> two of the runways at sfo remain closed at this hour. arriving flights are being delayed nearly 4 1/2 hours on average. passengers are being warned to expect long delays and some flight cancellations again today. so much of the attention this morning is on that federal ntsb team of investigators are who are just now beginning their inspection of the wreckage and the search for clues. how did this tragedy happen? abc7 news reporter matt examplar spoke with the head of the agency this morning and joins us live from sfo with what you have learned. good morning, matt keller. >> good morning. yeah, the light is just starting to shine here at sfo so people are going to be able to go out to the wreckage of the plane and get a clearer look at what exactly happened here. we are here at the international terminal at sfo, and you see travelers are arriving here for

their flights. i went inside and checked the flight boards and several departures and arrivals have been cancelled. so people flying obviously want to contact their airlines. here's pictures taken by the ntsb overnight. investigators doing their first sight inspection of the plane. deb raw hersmam is the cam. she told us the ntsb is usually on the scene of crashes like this for a week. a lot of work has to take place before the plane wreckage can be removed from the runway. >> we have to get certainly the removal process going to remove the aircraft. it's significantly damaged so we want to make sure we do our evidence preservation first and documentation and then get the aircraft out of there. >> chairman hersman told me the black boxes have been recovered and flown to washington d.c. with a federal escort.

she wouldn't speculate on the cause. we know emergency workers and witnesses say the flight slammed into runway 2-8 early and breaking off its tail and starting on fire before coming to a stop. i am told there will be a press briefing this afternoon and they will give us the latest on their investigation and what they are finding this morning. reporting live, abc7 news. we got two information about the two young victims who died in the crash. they were part of a school group that was going to visit a bay area university. cornell bernard is live in the newsroom with their stories, cornell. >> we are learning two of the passengers killed were chinese nationals. both were 16-year-old students. they have been identified. they were part of a school group of 35 students and five teachers, as we said, visiting the u.s. from china. in the meantime many of the survivors of the crash were ses courted through the terminal by police. one woman appeared to have a

bruise on her face. another man was wearing a sling. he had a broken collarbone. passengers said it seemed-like it was happening in slow explosion. many passengers said the flight attendants acted quickly, deploying the evacuation shoots but no one panicked and people got out of the burning jet as fast as they could. >> they dropped down and the whole plane was shaking. >> were people running? >> oh, yank what was the evacuation right? >> we used the shoots to get out. >> many passengers seen walking through the terminal at sfo wrapped in blankets. those blankets were provided by the salvation army. the two passengers killed were part of a middle school group of students who planned to spend the summer in california. they were on their way at a summer camp in los angeles in

the san fernando valley at west valley christian school. that school said on its website that it's shocked and saddened by the news of the crash. they were also scheduled to visit stanford university and several other colleges in the bay area. live in the newsroom, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> cornell, thank you. of the nearly 200 injured passengers from asiana flight 214, more than 50 were taken to san francisco hospital. benjamin levy was sitting in the middle of the plane when it crashed. he was knowing home from san francisco after a business crip to korea. we spoke to his wife, who said levy helped passengers get off the plane through a hole in the wing. >> people were screaming, you know. they had to calm everybody down and told everybody to get off. >> the 39-year-old father of two was released from san francisco

general after being treated for bruised cartilage in his chest. >> more than 220 firefighters were called in to help in the crash of asiana flight 214. the san francisco fire chief said there was a lot of smoke and many passengers had to self evacuate the plane. firefighters say they saw some passengers coming out of the water. >> people coming from the water. it's my guess it was a burning plane so if they were burn at all or hot they may have gone over to the water's edge themselves after they self evacuated to flash water in their face or get into the water. it's a shallow area. >> local officials say the amount of debris and fire made the crash scene difficult to manage. >> some of the enduring images of the accident were taken by people who were near sfo when the plane went down. take a look, this is the horrifying scene captured on camera by rebecca richardson. she took these photos at heavy black smoke started rising from the plane. she shared she's images with us by way of twitter. and sky 7hd shot these dramatic

pictures showing just how lucky most of those passengers were to get off that burning plane. you can see the emergency shoot there on the left. you can see it shredded and deflated. officials have not said why the shoot ended up like that. >> hundreds of people witnessed the horrifying sight of the plane crashing. crowds gathered along the milbrae waterfront after the crash. a few happened to be there when they her the actual impact. here are photos taken moments after impact. they show evacuation shoots hanging from the plane, passengers sliding down to the grassy area next to the runway. others stand ag long side the plane that had just carried them from south korea. >> i saw some of them, carrying baggage with them and going casually out of the plane. running out of the shoot. and they were looking nowhere and they were running around. >> it wasn't until most, if not all of the passengers were off the jet, that it burt into

flames, spewing smoke into the sky. firefighters smothered the plane with fountains of fire retardant. >> that crash of asiana flight 214 and the brief closer of san francisco international, scent people scrambling for flights. this was especially true at the international terminal at sfo. we have the story from that terminal. >> within minutes of asiana flight 214 crashing on approach to san francisco international, passengers scheduled on a flight to seoul, south korea, were the first to find out they may not be going anywhere for a while. >> my luggage is in my hand, i can't make travel plans, i don't know if i should book or if i should leave or not. but it's understandable because lots of people's lives are in jeopardy now. >> all flights stopped for a couple hours while crews dealt with the crash. passengers started getting

information on their smartphones and from ticketing agents. it became clear flying anywhere out of the bay area would be difficult. >> you can go to long beach. we don't have anything there. there is no flight from the area here. san jose, no flights up there, which can get us to austin. >> as the day wore on, passengers kept collecting inside a number of flights were cancelled. we talk to one woman who was waiting on hold for an hour and a half. >> we've been waiting a long time. >> finally the agent came on with good news. >> he found me one flight. and i will be in luxembourg on tuesday. >> after two runways were reopened, a limited number of planes, mostly international carriers, began taxiing into the terminal. >> she was supposed to be here. >> abc7 news. >> up next, our bribe being news

>> it's 6:14. back to our coverage of the flight crash at sfo. this happened as the plane was at the beginning of the runway. we have an animated simulation of the crash from abc news based on witness reports and debris trail on the ground. it appears the plane hit the seawall just before the runway, knocking off its tail section. the plane appeared to supplied and spin and kicking up debris until it stopped on the side of the runway. >> and this morning we are learning more about the pilot of the asiana flight 214. a spokesman for the airline told us who the pilot was, he said he was a veteran with long experience. he was actually one of four pilots rotating in two-person shifts during the flight because it takes more than 10 hours. he will likely be the person who

holds a lot of the answers as to why that plane crashed. we are also learning asiana airlines has been trying to bounce back from two other fatal crashes in its 25 year history. two years ago one of its 747 cargo planes headed for shanghai crashed into the sea, killing the two pilots on board. that was blamed on mechanical problems. in 1993 an asianaa domestic flight from seoul crashed during a botched landing attempt in bad weather. that killed 66 people and injured 44. pilot began the plane's decent while it was still passing over a mountaintop. >> the crash of asianaa flight 214 caused many passengers to be delayed at sfo. wayne friedman caught up with some of them, as well as bystanders, who had no choice but to watch as crews investigated in the hours following the crash. >> even after the sun went down the curious stood on the banks at a park in milbrae and stared across the water, taking in the

hulk that had been asiana flight 214. there's just no hiding it. >> everybody here has probably flown on a plane. just to think that something like this can happen to you. it's just scary. >> and yet these are the people who had it easy who came to the airport by choice, who stood here and watched airline service finally resume. by then the airport terminals had become teeming with travelers who were not going anywhere. >> with the airport closed all the planes that could not arrive meant more flights couldn't turn around and leave. reservations guaranteed nothing. this woman's flight will not happen for two long days. >> were you able to find a room? >> it was very difficult. nothing in san fran was available so we had to go to oakland. >> how will you going to get to oakland? >> by bart. >> meanwhile outside the terminals so-named reflection room, police held back an army of curious reporters who hoped

to hear from the plane's passengers, friends and family inside. this man had a friend who survived the crash, but couldn't find him. he was patient, given the lack of information. >> i guess they are trying to do their best and i'm trying to do my best. we are all in a crisis. >> for anyone involved with this crash, this day is already a permanent memory. even for the curious bystanders who watched from a distance. >> our hearts and souls poor out for them. >> wayne friedman, abc7 news. >> governor jerry brown is reacting to the crash. he has issued a statement saying, quote, ann and i extend our deepest concerns and sympathy to the passengers who were aboard asiana flight 214 and to their families. we're grateful for the courage and swift response of the first responders, whose actions surely prevented an even greater tragedy." ann is the governor's wife.

is soon after the crash president obama expressed his gratitude for the first responders and directed his team to stay in constant contact with federal," state and local partners as they investigate and respond to this event. the white house says, quote, his thoughts and prayers go out to the families who lost a loved one and all those affected by the crash. the president will continue to be updated as new information becomes available. >> we will continue to follow this, but right now we want to take a break and take a look at the accuweather forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, you guys. good morning, everyone. we are looking at just a little bit of a warmup for the second half of your weekend. although the clouds will dominate the forecast for most of the morning, except if you are in our inland east bay and also toward san jose where we are looking at partly cloudy skies. so right now the marine layer at about 2,000 feet deep. you see it, mt. tam, isn't that pretty? the sun up at 5:55. 56 and cloudy skies in mountain view with san jose partly cloudy, 55. santa cruz plenty of clouds

along the central coast. we are looking at that foggy golden gate where the low clouds and fog will stay pretty much banked up along the shoreline. low 50s with the clouds in santa rosa and napa right now. union city at 57 and los gatos at 52. lock at this shot. this is from the east bay hills camera. vollmer peak with the sun above the marine layer. you are looking at mt. diablo in the background. low fog and clouds but not in the east bay valleys. you are starting out clear and warmer today. you will see numbers climb through the 80s. the modest warmup for the next couple days and then cooling gets underway. modest cooling. nothing too extreme for the middle of the week. we've had a trough of low pressure in the pacific northwest that brought the stronger on shore push. today a cooler air mass is going to lift out just slightly and as it does it will allow higher pressure to build in and that allows for temperatures to come up anywhere from two to five degrees. state-wide we are out of the triple digits in sacramento. 93 for you, 98 chico with a

little sunshine and monterey 66. looking at about 80 in los angeles. actually temperatures today right where they should be, back into the 80s for you in the south bay. average highs mid-80s and san jose coming in at 83. so the slight warmup here with 86 in los gatos, 79 in sunnyvale and milpitas coming in at 78. more upper 70s for the peninsula. a little cooler yesterday. the sea breeze should back off just enough that you will warm through the upper 70s in palo alto and redwood city. only 58 in pacifica. 67 downtown. we will look for that southerly flow to keep much. the north bay cool with 78 in san rafael. 82 the further north you get up in calistoga and santa rosa. and the 60s berkeley. 72 today, a nice comfortable day at union city at 75. inland east bay you will notice numbers here in the mid-80s. a couple of upper 80s out toward the livermore valley.

others used for international flights. >> investigators will less tone the conversations made from the air traffic control towers as they try to piece together what happened. here's a sample of what they will listen to. >> asiana 214, emergency vehicles are responding. they are en on their way. >> some of the audio is difficult to make out. but you can hear the tower telling the pilot who radioed in that emergency vehicles were on their way. this conversation happened in moment right after the crash. >> we talked to abc7 news aviation consultant john nance what he believes likely went wrong. >> we know it was too low obviously, we know it was too slow, and the combination of that with the nose up angle, of course, which is what we were told at first, that there was a major problem in trying to make the runway. and the missing element here is power. now did they push the power up at 500 feet or 600 feet and the

engines did not come up? or was it a situation that for some reason they didn't get to the throttles in time and they were trying to do a go around. i find that highly unlikely with a professional flight crew. >> facebook's chief operating officer cheryl sandberg was actually supposed to be on board that plane. she put a message on her face book page. she put it on the facebook page and here is what it said, "taking a minute to be thankful and explain what happened. we were going to take the flight that just crash landed. we switched to united so we could use miles for my family's tickets. our flight was scheduled to come in at the same time but we were early and landed about 20 minutes of before the crash. our friend david was on the flight and he is fine. thank you for reaching out, everything, and sorry if we worried one. serious time to give thanks." >> i'm sure she'll be thinking

of investigators is going to be doing today at sfo. those investigators arrived overnight at the scene. witnesses and emergency workers say the asiana flight from south korea slammed into the runway 2-8 early, breaking up its tail and catching fire before coming to a stop around 11:30 yesterday morning. ntsb investigators recovered the black boxes and the recorders and sent them to washington, d.c. they wouldn't speculate if they thought it was a mechanical error or pilot error but they will look at all possibilities. >> we will see about the crew interaction. we will look at the system, the power plants, the structures, the survivability and we will look at the airport and doing documentation as far as the airport and the environment goes. >> here's some pictures taken by the ntsb overnight of the investigators doing their first sight inspection of the plane. here's a picture of the chairman

deborah hersman. i was just in the terminal and some told they they are from los angeles and wait to go help. they are waiting to hear from management what they will do next today. reporting live, abc7 news. >> thank you, matt. we are learning new information this morning about those girls, the two who lost their lives in the crash. hearing from survivors who escaped the burning plane. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has the latest live in the newsroom. >> carolyn, good morning. the two girls killed were chinese nationals visiting the u.s. for the summer. both students were 16 years old. in fact, one had just turned 16 only ten days ago. they were both part of a school group of 35 students and five teachers visiting the u.s. from china. meantime many survivors of the crash were escorted through the

sfo certainly natural by -- terminal by police. one man appeared to have a broken collarben and another man was in a sling. passengers said the noise of the crash was deafening as they hit the runway and the tail section broke off. many said the crew acted quickly, deploying the shoots. but no one panicked and people got out of the burning jet as fast as they could. >> they were scared and we provided some with blankets and some of them lost their shoes so we went to get the shoes. some of them, they have just one shoe and some don't have shoes. >> that woman was a salvation army translator. many passengers seen walking through the terminal at sfo wrapped in blankets provided by the salvation army. two passengers killed were part

of a middle school are group of students that planned to spend the summer in california. they were on their way to summer camp, in fact, in los angeles in the san fernando valley. the school sid on their website this morning they are shocked and saddened by the news. girls and the school group was also scheduled to visit stanford university, as well as other colleges in the bay area. live in the newsroom, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> cornell, thank you so much. more on the girls who died. our media partner said one girl appeared to have been thrown from the rear of the plane and landed on the runway when the tail broke off and the other was found in the wreckage. we heard briefly from a teenage boy who led through the crash. here he is talking to officials. he ventured out of the protective room and spoke to reporters about the moment of impact and what it was like for him before a police officer rushed him away. >> went up and down and then --

then flipped or something like that's correct i'm not sure. and then it hit the ground and then -- yeah. >> what happened next? >> [inaudible] >> okay. >> where you were sitting? >> i was sitting next to the hole. >> you can see before he finished an officer writes beinged him away. boy was taken back to the reflection room where other survivors and family members were gathering. >> some guests at hotels surrounding sfo had a very clear view of the crash. here are some photos taken by one witness who saw the asiana flight come down. witnesses say they heard a loud noise right before the plane burst into flames. >> all of a sudden we saw the plane land and the tail end of it went down. all of a sudden we saw smoke.

we thought the plane cracked in half. >> witnesses also tell us they could tell the plane was coming in at an odd angle right before the crash. the tail much too low and the nose of the plane high. now to san francisco general hospital where three waves of casualties have been admitted. there are a total of 53 patients there. two are children. the first wave of passengers arrived around 12:30 yesterday afternoon, ten in critical condition. many were brought in on again anies. the collector of the emergency department gave a description of some of the injuries. >> we see a lot of bumps and bruises and contusion. level with long bone fractures. but we've seen a lot of patients with spine injuries. i'm guessing it's from the force of the plane going down on the long axis of the spine so we have patients with spinal

compression fractures or cervical spine fractures. >> there are some patients who have already been discharged. sf general said it also transferred some regular patients to laguna hospital to free up beds for the plane crash victims. >> stanford hospital is planning to update the condition of the passengers taken there in about an hour or so. you see an ambulance and several gurneys with injured passengers yesterday. hospital staff are surrounding them. all together 36 passengers were taken to stanford. hospital officials all updated. they updated earlier and here's what they had to say. >> we rehearse for emergencies lick this. we have an emergency operations team and we rehearse several times throughout the year for different types of disasters. we were prepared and we have mobilized the emergency department and the trauma department to be prepared for an emergency, for an unfortunate tragedy like this. >> in this age of cell phone cameras and social immediate way, photos and videos of the crash were posted online almost

immediately after it happened. the photos were seen which were taken moments after the crash are startling. two deaths, 182 injuries, are certainly a tragedy. but when you look at pictures like these, the stunning devastation, you just can't imagine it wasn't even worse. look at this photo from david, a samsung executive in silicon valley. he was aboard the plane. he tweeted this photo just after the crash before the top of the plane disintegrated. that plane burned and smoked for a bit so crews used foam fire retardant to put out any flames and stop any flareups. passengers had to wait and wade around the foam as they got off. >> we have breaking news on the peninsula right now where firefighters are battling a sub born apartment fire in redwood city. it's been burning since 2:00 a.m. on woodside road and central avenue. a fire marshal on the scene said

part of the roof has collapsed. 16 people have been taken to local hospitals with minor cuts and bruises and smoke inhalation. residents say they initially thought fire was coming from the second floor of the building. this is a six-alarm fire. >> wonder if the win is playing a role in that in redwood city. let's check the accuweather forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. the low clouds and fog with us this morning, except in our east bay valleys. we are looking at that burn-back to the shoreline today. that will allow slight warming. despite the warming the sea breeze will keep the clouds at the coast and the cooling conditions in the north bay. so the warmup is modest. as we take you into oakland, we will look for temperatures today to climb from yesterday's readings. highs today in the east bay in the mid-70s for the warmest locations. a long the coast we call it mostly cloudy, upper 50s to lower 60s. and inland low to mid-and upper 8 80s should be the highs

once again we within to show you the wreckage there from asiana airlines, the 777 boeing plane on the runway at sfo. ntsb investigators are here checking into this disaster. asiana flight 214 originated in shanghai before stopping in seoul and then making its way to san francisco. the airline says there were 16 crewmembers on board and 291 passengers. 61 americans were on that plane. there were 141 chinese passengers, along with 77 south koreans and one japanese citizen. the nationalities of the remaining passengers, they were flying under passports from canada, india, vietnam and france. >> listen to this story, one peninsula woman who saw the plane crash from her home, also saw another plane crash at sfo 49 years ago. barbara and her husband looked out the window of their

into some sunshine within the midmorning hours. here's a look from the east bay hills camera. looking at mt. diablo. a pretty site. low clouds and fog. a little warmer today but painly inland. some cooling heads our way by wednesday and then we are back to a warmer weekend. it all got started yesterday with the trough of low pressure situated to the north and west of us. but now that cooler air mass slowly begins to lift to the north and higher pressure is trying to nudge into california. as it does, that will bring more 80s into our inland east bay. statewide we have the warmer 90s from sacramento to chico. 103 in fresno with partly cloudy skies later on today, monterey mid-60s. in the south bay look for 82 in santa clara. warmer than yesterday with mid-80s los gatos. peninsula numbers upper 70s. redwood city. and only 68 here. we will see the afternoon sea breeze. 82 for sonoma, calistoga, near

evening are the very latest developments in the crash of the asiana airlines passenger jet at sfo. the national transportation safety board is at the sfo right now investigating the cause of the crash. they have recovered both of the so-called black box that is record flight information data and the pilots' voices. both are on their way to washington d.c. right now for analysis. >> asiana airlines confirmed the two passengers killed in the crash of 16-year-old girls from china. at least 49 of the people injured in the crash were in bay area hospitals in critical condition late last night. >> they were heading to a camp in los angeles with their teachers. two of the runways at sfo remain closed with arriving flights being delayed on average four
