making news in america this morning. staying silent. george zimmerman will not take the stand in his murder trial. and the dummy that was the most compelling witness of the day. and the drama following the deadly plane crash in san francisco. >> we're trying to keep her alive. >> this morning, we're hearing the 911 calls from the runway. survivors return to the scene. we're live with the latest. and the heroic rescue. the alarming moment caught on camera. a man on a wheelchair rolls on to the subway tracks. wait until you see what happens next. and mr. mayor. the 4-year-old boy in charge of an entire town, with his sights now set on re-election.

good thursday morning. it is now officially down to the wire. lawyers in the george zimmerman trial will have one last chance today to persuade jurors as they deliver the closing arguments. >> the defense rested its case without calling zimmerman to the stand. but we did hear him speak. abc's marci gonzalez reports from florida. >> and what is your decision, sir? >> after consulting with counsel, not to testify, your honor. >> reporter: george zimmerman deciding not to take the stand in his own defense. as his second-degree murder trial winds down, it's a choice his attorney says wasn't easy. >> a big part of him wanted to get in front of the jury and talk to them and say, this is my story. >> reporter: the defense called zimmerman's father as their last witness. and then, rested their case. >> the defense would rest. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: on this 12th day of testimony, they tried to show the jury how they believe martin may have left zimmerman bloodied. >> are the injuries on mr. zimmerman's -- the back of his head, consistent with

someone doing this? >> reporter: the prosecution using the same mannequin trying to prove if martin attacked zimmerman the way the defense described, zimmerman wouldn't be able to reach his gun. >> where would the gun be now? >> now, the gun would be behind your left leg. >> reporter: when court resumes, attorneys with spar over which lesser charges the jury will be allowed to consider, along with second-degree murder. and with closing arguments set to begin thursday afternoon, legal analyst sunny hostin tells abc news the pressure is on. >> closing arguments will be the key to this trial. >> reporter: the judge expects the jury to begin deliberating friday afternoon. zimmerman's attorney says he is worried about his safety and what could happen after the verdict is read. john and diana? >> thank you very much, marci. police across florida bracing for possible protests after this verdict. the sheriff's department in south florida has made this public service announcement. it's called raise your voice, not your hands. and it was made with help from the miami heat's james jones. trayvon martin's parents have appealed for calm, no matter the jury's decision. this morning, for the first

time, we're hearing some of the 911 calls placed moments after asiana flight 214 crashed and burned at san francisco international. also this morning, investigators are hoping that they'll soon be able to free up that damaged runway so that repairs can be made and planes can begin landing there once again. abc's preeti arla has the latest. >> reporter: the wreckage from the crash of the asiana airlines flight is slowly being removed this morning as the investigation continues. several flight attendants talked with investigators and provided new details about the moments following the crash. the head of the ntsb said flight attendants knocked on the cockpit door, asking if they should evacuate passengers. >> the flight crew told the flight attendants not to initiate an evacuation. they were communicating with the tower about the emergency. >> reporter: the flight attendants who saw the plane was on fire overruled the pilots and decided to go ahead with the evacuation anyway, likely saving many lives. one even carried out a passenger

more than twice her weight. six flight attendants remain in the hospital. but the others made an emotional appearance. >> translator: i hope for all the families who have suffered losses from this accident to recover as quickly as possible. and they are all in my prayers. >> reporter: this morning, newly-released audio from some of the 911 calls that came in moments after impact. >> we have people over here who are -- weren't found. and they're burned, really badly. >> where are you at? >> we're out on the outskirts. >> reporter: a passenger describes the scene. >> we have been on the ground, i don't know, 20 minutes, a half hour. there's people laying on the tarmac with critical injuries. head injuries. we're almost losing a woman here. we're trying to keep her alive. >> reporter: survivors and their families were bussed out to the crash site yesterday for a brief memorial service. and investigators hope to talk to the remaining flight attendants as they try to figure out exactly what caused the crash. diana?

>> preeti, you know, we're hearing so much about what happened. and the latest we're hearing is the pilot at the controls said he saw something strange as he approached the airport. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: well, the pilot said he saw a flash of light that temporarily blinded him. now, the ntsb isn't speculating on what might have caused this. but they did pass along that information to investigators. diana? >> preeti arla, live in washington for us. thank you. more grim news this morning five days of the runaway train crash in canada. a total of 20 bodies have been pulled from the charred scene there near maine. officials told families that 30 other people still missing are presumed dead. the head of the rail company involved says the engineer failed to set the brakes properly. and the other major development in another high-profile case. for the first time, lawyers for accused theater shooter james holmes says he killed 12 people and wounded dozens more in the shooting last summer. but they say that he was in the throes of a psychotic episode at the time he did it. the information became public as the lawyers argued that holmes should remain unrestrained during his trial.

a restrictive abortion bill is heading back to the texas state senate after getting swift approval from house lawmakers. abortion rights advocates who tried to shout down the passage of the measure were quickly dragged from the chamber. the legislation blocked by filibuster in the senate last month, calls for new requirements that would shut down all but just a handful of abortion clinics in texas. president obama has invited key senate leaders to the white house today to huddle on how they can get a more comprehensive immigration reform bill through the house. as hundreds young immigrants rallied in front of the capitol, house republicans argued how to proceed. house speaker john boehner has said he will not bring the billup for a vote. and republicans are adamantly against creating a path to citizenship. a dramatic scene playing out in london this morning. six activists from greenpeace are scaling the shard, it's europe's tallest skyscraper. greenpeace u.k. has been tweeting pictures of the climb and wishing the women luck. all six climbers are women. one wearing a live helmet cam.

they're attempting to reach the top of that 87-story building. it's a protest against drilling in the arctic. police say they will not remove them because of safety concerns. wow. time, now, for the weather across the nation. it will be another long, damp day along the entire east coast, from northern maine, south to florida and west into texas. also expect some monsoon-style showers in parts of the west, mostly over higher elevations. >> a relatively mild day in much of the midsection. less humid with cooler temperatures in the 80s. check out the south. scorching numbers across the board, especially texas, which is hitting triple-digits. reducing the risk for newborns. new this morning, a recommendation from doctors could change standard practice in the delivery room. plus, a flash flood washing away a car. incredible new video showing the power of mother nature. and is it the end of dry cleaning as we know it? the waterproofing product that almost doesn't look real.

welcome back. it's shaping up to be a blockbuster day on wall street. stock futures soared overnight on news that the federal reserve will keep pumping money into the economy. the federal reserve chair ben bernanke said last night the popular policies will continue for the foreseeable future. markets were rocked late last month when he said the fed would reduce its stimulus. and a state has failed again to restore lower interest rates on student loans. the rates doubled last week, even though both parties agree that the current rates are too high. tough news for the housing market. mortgage applications continue to plummet. falling for four-straight weeks.

check this out. face-to-face with a wall of mud. flash flooding is creating a dangerous mess in the waldo canyon burn area. this photographer captured this video from inside of his car. and it was swept away. and then -- buried in mud. seems to be okay, as he filmed the entire ordeal. don't try this at home. >> another driver captured the whole thing from another angle. you can see his car is pushed down the road. my goodness. a wall of mud. >> i wonder if he purposely got in there. that's the question. if he didn't -- >> i want to see what he looked like when he got out. was he crystal clean? or was he all muddy? >> i don't know. if the car was buried in mud, it probably got in somehow. there's likely to be more of the same in that area once again today. sorry, guys. lots of wet roads in the mountains. be on the lookout for slowdowns

and j.p. norden, each lost a leg. if you had an opportunity to talk to him, what would you say? >> i wouldn't do too much talking to him. >> reporter: but j.p.'s uncle and mother, liz, came to court. >> i want to see who changed their lives forever. after she saw tsaranev in court, she was disgusted. >> he had no -- i don't know. just you know -- that's how i took it. >> reporter: outside the court, 20 m.i.t. officers stood at attention. tsaranev is accused of killing one of their own, as he tried to outrun authorities. >> i didn't see the remorse. i didn't see the nervousness, the fear. i didn't see any of that. >> reporter: tsaranev's sisters cried as they were led out of court. if convicted, he faces the death penalty. pierre thomas, abc news, boston. there's a study that finds a

delay in clamping and cutting the umbilical cord can have health benefits for the newborn. researchers have found babies who had their cords cut later on were less likely to be iron-deficient because they got more of their mother's blood. caught on camera this morning. good samaritans saving the day after a terrifying incident on a washington, d.c. subway platform. you can see the man in a wheelchair, trying to get a closer look at the sign. he rolls right off the platform, on to the tracks of the metro. that's when army specialist michael mancaka, jumped in after him. another man sprang into action. they both lifted him to safety. >> i saw him go over on the tracks. i went to go see. and i looked down there, and this guy is laying there. >> do you think those actions were heroics? >> not really. i was doing the right thing. >> got that right. he may not consider himself a hero. but he is being considered for the soldier's medal. it's the highest peacetime
