good morning, happy saturday. it's 8:00 a.m. i'm katie marzullo. let's start with a look at the weather. frances dinglasan in nor lisa argen this morning. >> we have a beautiful day. as you can tell from the live shot looking from the exploratorium out to the bay bridge. you see the sunshine reflecting in the water. it will be breezy around the bay with a small craft advisory in effect. temperatures right now still in the 50s, visibility less than a mile in santa rosa. novato, 54. livermore getting up to 61 degrees. we'll start to see a warmup in the inland areas but we have to deal with the low clouds and fog this morning. still in the 50s. by this afternoon, mostly

sunny except for the coast where we'll see temperatures in the upper 60s but reaching the low 90s. things start to cool down below 76 tonight. i'll have the complete seven-day forecast coming up. >> katie: two women are dead and a man is in hospital after an attack at jewelry mart. i happened at eighth and brannon. sergio quintana has more on what happened. >> reporter: this is video of one of the victims inside the gift center being carted out to an ambulance. they say he was feet from where it all happened. >> i was working inside and heard two or three shots. i looked outside and i saw people running. >> inside this picture where the shooting unfolded you can see police down the hall at the crime scene. >> store 147, called victoga. we found two deceased females.

>> one woman was shot to death. the second was stabbed to death. third victim suffered gunshots and stab wounds. he was rushed to san francisco general hospital. their attacker managed to get out of the building. >> the suspect was walking on the north side of the street covered in blood. officers went to engage the suspect not knowing if he was a victim or suspect. at that point in time, suspect produced a weapon and fired upon the officers. >> reporter: dozens of officers quickly swarmed the area and man eventually surrounded inside a nearby mexican restaurant because he ran out of ammunition. he was also taken to san francisco general but police have not described his injuries. s.w.a.t. team swept through the building to see if there were additional gunmen and merchants were escorted out. one tells us he saw one of the victims. >> when i evacuate and went out into the hallway for the emergency, then i saw the woman.

>> many say they are shocked this happened because security is very thorough and you have to have a special pass to 95 in. >> katie: developing news out of san jose, a man is dead after being shot in the city's alviso neighborhood. it happened before 10:00 at state and archer streets. a man in his 30s was on the sidewalk talking with someone when he was shot. no suspects are in custody. the shooting is san jose's 27th homicide of the year. >> the father of a missing 21 month old girl plans to join in the search for his daughter today. he talked to alan wang as he was released from jail. >> even though i'm out of jail i'm still not free. >> when 49-year-old anthony

webb marked out of the market he says his two-year-old daughter was fon gone from the suv. police can't find anyone who saw webb with his daughter that day or in the previous weeks. >> i don't know who saw me to tell you the truth. like i said i'm a home body. my mom is a at home. i talked to to my wife every day where she is at. she is in the background. >> his wife has been in a drug rehab program for almost three months. she hasn't seen the child in two weeks. >> have you ever seen the baby's life in danger? >> i don't wanted to say that. i'm already sad. i don't -- i know the mother loves her. she gave birth to her. >> the wife was living on the streets with the baby which prompted an investigation. he admits there was a restraining order on his wife and daphne is missing

part of the ear which is part of investigation. >> she lost that part of her ear.... >> i'm not doing it on national tv. now, he says he is going home and go out and find his daughter at santa rita jail, alan wang, "abc 7 news." >> police have identified a man that was killed in a six alarm fire that gutted an apartment complex. he was killed when the fire broke out at the apartments on woodside drive. more than 20 people were injured and more than a hundred were displaced. investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. a fund-raiser will be held today to honor a man who was shot to death in oakland after a fender-bender. 22-year-old man was gunned down on june 12th after getting into altercation with two men that

rear-ended his car. a reward is being offered for the suspect's arrest. on third young woman has died from injuries suffered in the airlines crash at sfo. we have learned the victim is 17-year-old, a chinese national. chinese media she had been unconscious at sfo general hospital since saturday's crash. >> today we're very sad to announce one of the victims of the plane crash expired this morning. she died of her injuries. as the pediatric patient. >> 14 people from the asiana airlines crash remain in bay area hospitals, six at san francisco general, one at mills pennsylvania, two at california pacific medical center and one each

at stanford and st. mary's. >> they confirmed the victim was run over by a fire truck but they say she may have been killed in the plane crash and not by the truck. police chief says she was hit at least once, and covered by fire fighting foam and no one could have seen her. >> planes are once again landing where the plane crashed at sfo. the airport reopened it last night. planes are landing side by side on both parallel runways at 28 right and left where saturday's crash happened. we were over sfo when the runway returned to full operation just after 5:00 p.m. two days ahead of schedule. in the past 24 hours, they picked up debris, repainted runway lines and repaved a lot of asphalt.

actually. there wasn't as long line at the gate. >> in fact we found very few flight delays after a long week of cancellations and delays after the crash. >> katie: chinese media reports some students and teachers who survived the crash have touched down in beijing. the chinese consulate in san francisco posted a photo showing a group of 31 students and teachers boarding an air china flight yesterday afternoon. earlier 35 others continued on tour of the united states. >> a blood drive will be held on monday to help replenish blood supplies. it will be held the baggage terminal area and donors are asked to schedule an appointment by calling the number you see there on the

deliberately left out to kill dogs in san francisco. we've learned one dog has died after eating the meatballs. an analysis shows it contains a high level of strict nine. they were found last week in diamond heights and twin peaks areas frequented by dogs and their owners. if you are a parent, children can be prone to weather go their beds. now there is a product protect a bed that guarantees it can protect against accidents. a woman that put the product to the test. >> laura struggles to show mattress she was left with several stains. mother of four bought the mattress a year ago along with the protective encasement.

prosecution argues that she shot him intentionally. >> lawmakers were called back to a new special session by the governor to cast their votes. republican majority approved it and sent to governor rick perry to sign. democrats say the legislation is unconstitutional and will ban abortions after 20 weeks and could shut down 37 of the state's 42 abortion clinics. two weeks ago democratic senator bend did i davis nearly stop the legislation with a filibuster. >> a dare went horribly wrong. 22 children had to be treated. as part of a dare, several students drank beverages mixed with things like salt, pepper and hot sauce. they reported feeling sick soon afterwards. they were all treated at area hospitals but since been released.

>> khien parts of china have been evacuated ahead of a powerful typhoon. one person was killed after it dumped heavy rains. schools and businesses in the region were closed yesterday and 8,000 people were ordered to evacuate. frances dinglasan is familiar with. it's the season. >> it's the season for typhoons in asia and i experienced many of them in philippines. we got the fog and low clouds for summertime patterns. here is a look at live doppler, sweeping around the bay area. pretty quiet. you will notice the satellite image picking up clouds along the coast and fog starting to dissipate. we have a nice day in store for us. beautiful view looking out

to the bay bridge. winds are light right now, small craft advisory in effect. 3:00 to 9:00 and winds around 15-25 knotsper hour. it's currently 59 in oakland. 61 already in mountain view and 56 in santa cruz. i wanted to take you to another live shot from mount tam. still seeing a lot of these low clouds hovering, sneaking it's a way into the bay area. then it will pull back shortly. i'll show you a model forecast in just a bit. santa rosa, 52 and fog finally cleared. it was very cloudy and foggy morning with visibility less than a mile. fairfield at 62. novato at 55 degrees. here is what you can expect for your saturday. it's going to be a nice one but we will deal with a patchy fog in the morning. sunnier today and temperatures are going to be a little bit warmer and that will stay with us into

sunday. forecast model shows a lot of changes during the late morning hours. by 10:00 this morning, a lot of sunshine for everybody. right near the bay around the golden gate we could see the fog stick around a little longer. this afternoon, we're going hit the 90s and temperatures will be a few degrees warmer in most spots. in san jose, look for a high of 81 yesterday. it was about 78 and also los gatos, 84. we're going to see lots of sunshine in the lower parts of the peninsula but still cloudy and school in pacifica. partly cloudy conditions around the city and 80s in sonoma and napa. 78 in petaluma. hot spot, clearlake at 94 and ukiah at 96. east bay, t-shirts,

welcome back. it's 8:30. we'll take a quick look at the weather. here a frances dinglasan. >> good morning. we're starting with live doppler 7-hd. picking up moisture in the low level clouds over the ocean but around the bay, just low clouds. current temperatures in the 50s if you are heading out the door shortly, it will warm up nicely and see more sunshine. currently 59 in san carlos and only 52 in santa rosa. monterey bay, low 50s in watsonville and also gilroy. as we look out toward the bay and bay bridge, lots of

sunshine inland where it's been clear most of the monk. you will need sunscreen because temperatures will climb up to the low 90s. around the bay, more sunshine and few degrees warmer, upper 60s to upper 70s. grab a jacket if you are going to head to the coast. it's going to be cool with clouds sticking around all day. temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. i'll have the complete accu-weather seven-day forecast and temperatures coming up. >> katie: bay area commuters are holding their breath as they waited to see if bart and unions can reach an agreement and avoid another strike. the trains are running but the problems remain. >> negotiators for bart and two biggest unions return to the bargaining table for the first time in about a week. this comes after the two sides agreed to extend their current contract for 30 days so they could iron out significant differences. so far there has been some

progress on some minor issues but still there a long way to go. >> the union is prepare to negotiate.... >> katie: all right. sorry a technical problem and we'll try to get the rest of the story to you. bart negotiations resuming and -- we do have it for you. we'll take you back there right now. >> negotiators for bart and two biggest unions returned to the bargaining table back in the same room in about a week. it comes after two sides agreed to extend the contract for 30 days so they could iron out significant differences. there has been some progress on minor issues but still there a long way to go. >> the union is prepared to negotiate 24 hours a day between now and august 5th. if we could achieve an agreement by tomorrow, we would. it takes two parties to negotiate. >> the union has taken issue that bart's lead negotiator will be unavailable from july 24 to

28. bart claims there will be plenty of negotiating time between now and early august. avoiding another strike is of great concern to some of commuters who lost a fair amount of his income during the walkout. >> yeah, i hope they reach an agreement. >> bart riders and those that rely on their cars are hoping for a speedy resolution. >> i hope it gets worked out. >> i think they have to compromise. that is the only way you solve a problem like this. >> the progress that was made on the issues around safety, but the unions are concerned about the big sticking points remain around pay and benefits. they will be back at the table on monday. >> katie: america's cup competitor artemis hopes to get back next week.

crew member andrew simpson was killed. they issued 37 rule changes to upgrade the safety of the boats but thursday, an international jury ruled two of them will not be enacted. those changes would affect the boat's rudder. they are stress testing a new boat to make sure it can handle the choppy waves. ceo told abc news, in his first interview since thursday's decision, that artemis is staying in the race and gaining strength in the rebuilding process. >> every day we achieve another thing, now we're going to accomplish the structural tests. every one of these is winnings for us. it's not about dropping out or quitting. that is not in our dna. >> today will be the first head to head challenger

race. italian and new zealand teams will be on the water at 12:15. official races begin in september. new this morning, president obama says overhauling the nation's immigration system can provide a boost to the recovery. in his address, he says immigrants have had a history of keeping america's economy the strongest in the world but he says under the current system, they are prevented from contributing to the nation's success. >> immigration reform would make it easier for highly skilled immigrants and those that study at our colleges and universities to start businesses and create jobs right here in america. foreign companies would be more likely to invest here. the demand for goods and services would go up creating more jobs. >> he is calling on the thousands act since the senate has passed a bipartisan bill. reaction is pouring in after janet napolitano announced she is stepping down at homeland security

secretary. she has been nominated to be president of the u.c. system. here is a report from nannette miranda. >> as a career of arizona governor, u.s. attorney and homeland security secretary under president obama, janet napolitano is seeking to become u.c. president. in a letter to the college, she said if confirmed i will accept the privilege of leading one of finest university systems in the country. napolitano is an unconventional pick outside the world of ago deem yeah. one says she was chosen because she has a track record for tackling the toughest challenges and seeing them through. it's a desire for change. >> she may not have appearance of being in an ivory tower. you see how things are changing in rome, it may be time to change in the

president's office. >> reporter: u.c. has been under fire under years. tuition doubled to more than $12,000 a year under the out going president. napolitano brings with her some star power that is expected to bring in more research money. her political acumen could help change priorities in sacramento. >> she will be able to stand before the legislature, the constitution of the state of california says the most important priority should be the education of children through the university. >> reporter: napolitano has california roots. she attended santa clara university and was the first female valedictorian there. >> we have so many different things. our structure is unique in the way we work. that is what we are thinking about.

>> it's keeping racial diversity and admitting more california students. nannette miranda, "abc 7 news". >> katie: it remains unclear when the new span of the bay bridge will reopen but crews are sticking to their schedule. yesterday they started paving the suspension span on the newly built eastern span. they are using two layers inch thick specialized asphalt. >> it should last the lifetime of the bridge. >> it will be routine maintenance but as i heard someone say, it should outlast us all. happening today, san francisco is hosting a preview to prepare for the avon walk for breast cancer. today's event runs from 9:00 a.m. to until 2:00 in the afternoon and begins on fourth street. participants will get a

welcome back. you might be waking up to some gray skies. >> we will see sunny skies except along the coast. some of those clouds hugging the coastline still. a little bit of green and low level moisture in the clouds is picking up. not giving us any rain. nothing to worry about in terms of rain. here is a live look from sutro tower, san francisco looking out towards the bay. pockets of sunshine developing around the bay area but you see the clouds, that is all coming in from the coast. currently 55 in san francisco. 59 in oakland. 58 in san jose. we are also going to take you to another beautiful

shot from mount tam where we see the clouds spilling in from the coast. you notice, a certain levels. higher altitudes it's clear and sunny and temperatures will warm up compared to yesterday. only 52 in santa rosa where there was very thick fog earlier this morning. we're getting into the 60s now, seeing more of it in fairfield, livermore and los gatos, currently at 60 degrees. here is what you can expect for the day. once the morning low clouds and fog clear, we'll get more sunshine which means warmer temperatures throughout the day and the temperature warmup will stay with us through tomorrow. we'll show you the forecast model which shows how these play out during the morning hours. by 10:00, you will see a lot of clouds peeling back to the coast. still lingering over parts of the bay but very sunny in inland locations. clear most of the morning.

temperatures there getting into the 90s. 70s and 80s around the bay. so everywhere slightly warmer except around the coast where it's expected to say near 60 degrees. south bay, 81 in san jose. beautiful day, as well. head to game tomorrow, temperatures 80 degrees. 62 sunset district with cloudier conditions here. also in the north bay, a range of temperatures from 60s along the coast to up to 96 in ukiah and low 80s for sonoma and napa. 70s in the east bay and your high of 74 in san leandro. definitely need sunscreen and have the sunglasses and pittsburg, antioch and brentwood. tonight the clouds will return and overnight lows will be mainly in the 50s. we could get down into the upper 40s in some of the valley locations. we'll also see some fog

develop once again. here is a look at seven-day forecast. we develop have the summer spread. 60 at the coast to 92 inland. tenancy a little bit warmer compared to yesterday holding steady through tomorrow. onshore flow starting on monday, breezier and cooler conditions. then warming back up wednesday, thursday and friday. >> katie: i like the look of that. >> i like the warmer weather on the weekend. in sports, tonight in oakland, red sox and a's played a second game in the battled between the two first place teams. last night a's faced and old nemesis in john lackey. here is larry beil with the highlights. >> good morning, this weekend is a great measuring stick for the a's. they are hosting the team with the best record, red sox battle. scary moments, steve got hit in the head with a
