>> it wasn't hard to find all over the downtown area. we are showing telegraph which was hit hard. look at the windows that were smashed. you walk down the street and you see boarded up windows. this is the second time this restaurant has been hit during the protests. it get hit saturday night. this is the crowd early in the evening last night. first it moved to interstate 880 blocking traffic. police arrested five people. oakland police and c.h.p. broke up the crowd and tried to move it along. the people continued to march around downtown oakland and police say they have reports of smashed windows throughout downtown, graffiti was rampant, people spraying the walls of the buildings in downtown. small fires were set, fireworks were set off and police say they

experiences having bottles thrown at them. people are here protesting the fact that george zimmerman was found not guilty in the death of trayvon martin in florida. this has been the third day of protests in oakland. last night nine people were arrested. before we go, this is an empty building with a sign you may have seen in oakland an old abandoned storefront with a boarded up window. police made nine arrests and most of those arrested have addresses outside of oakland. >> thank you. the protests turned violent if los angeles with 13 people facing charges after this scene last night. a group of 150 people broke off from a larger group and started attacking cars and businesses and swarm add driver smashing a

car until they took off. a local news crew was also attacked. >> george zimmerman's parents told barbara walters they fear for their son's life. the couple are speaking out for the first time since the aquittal in shooting death of unarmed florida teen george zimmerman. they are concerned about george's safety and their own. he is in hiding. there have been death threats against their son, the tones and even the police chief. >> what are the expectations of being able to live a normal life? >> only time will tell. >> you think your son has to stay in hiding for a long-term? >> if i was him, i o. >> what would you say to trayvon martin's parents? >> we are deeply sorry for this tragedy. deeply sorry. >> they say they haven't talked

to george zimmerman since the verdict and although he is free he doesn't have a job and is in serious debt over attorney fees. more on the verdict at 5:00 with the first juror speaking out against the decision to acquit. on "good morning america" more of barbara walters' exclusive with george zimmerman's parent at 7:00 a.m. on abc7 news. breaking news from south bay fire crews are on the scene of a house fire in san jose at burning tree drive. it broke out this morning and one person was rescued from inside the home. also need, 100 cats and dogs, some of which did not survive. we have a news crew on the scene and we will take you there. >> a pedestrian is being treated at san francisco general hospital after being hit by a police van south of market area shortly before 11:00 last night on howard near spear.

the van had the green light and the 60-year-old man step into traffic. the vehicle did not have lights or siren on and the man was conscious when he was taken to the hospital. >> livermore police would like you to look look at surveillance video to catch jewelry store robbers from k jewelers, with thieves using a car to smash through the metal security doors and ran into the store. they smashed the displace cases with hammers and filled their bags with jewelry. >> they were selective. they passed up some of the displace stands and while they targeted others so it was a group that was looking for specific items. >> police say it went down in four minutes. they got away with $100,000 in jewelry, the first major burglary at the outlet that opened in the fall. >> san francisco police chief is

trying to ary sure businesses they do not need to be afraid now a suspect in a double murder is in custody. several detectives met with workers and business owners after the suspect, 23-year-old barry white, allegedly fatally shot a woman and stabbed another to death on friday. there is no word open what the motive was but police say it does not appear to be robbery. >> the richmond city council will determine how much money the chevron refinery fire will cost the city and will vote on a resolution to get expert data used for public discussion before any settlement is worked out with chevron. it is estimated the fire led to a drop in property values in the city and school district. projected tax revenue is expected to be down 14 percent or $6 million in lost revenue to the city. the city council will give final approval to a plastic bag ban.

retail and grocery stores can no longer give out plastic bags and have to charge five cents for paper bags for two years and increase to ten cents. the city is trying to encourage re-usable bags. richmond is the first city in contra costa county to pass a plastic bag ban. >> mother jailed for abandoning her toddler says drugs made her do it. in an interview with abc7 news, she said she is addicted to crystal meth and has little hope of change. surveillance video showed the mother pushing a store into a bathroom gas station and came out alone. an hour later she was arrested in vallejo. she says she was high on meth and everything was a blur. >> i went there and...i forgot him there. it was not, like, i will leave my kid here.

>> covering san rafael and pleasanton and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. >> welcome back at 4:42. san francisco police are investigating an accident involving a cable car. a tour bus sideswiped a cable car last night. this photo was posted to our facebook page. a cable car passenger suffered a minor cut. >> the city of san rafael plans to ask voters to approve a sales tax increase. the marin independent journal reports the city council agreed to place a measure on the ballot to review and increase the sales tax. the measure continues the half cent sales tax voters approveed in 2010 and add an officer bringing it to a .75 percent hike hoping to bring in $10.5 million a year. right now it is 8.75 percent.

an effort is underway to stop a pest with the potential to do huge damage: it threatens to devastate the fruit industry in california. three fruit we flies were found near downtown san jose. tomas has more on eliminating the fly. >> the inspectors were asked if they could police the fruit fly traps in her peachtree at east san antonio street where a three was discovered, two of the hundreds of traps scattered along 19 square mile area of east san jose after the three flies found between july 3 and 5. the commissioner says that the fruit fly could be devastating to the $43 billion fruit industry. >> it is a tropicalfully with huge reproduction potential, many life sickles a year. we do not really have winter that kills i. >> it lays eggs in the truth we

corruption including the bid to profit from his power to appoint someone to the senate seat vacated by president obama. the appeal cite as juror who expressed bias and claimed a judge banned evidence that would help in his defense. >> the top leader of mexico's most feared and violent drug cartel is in police custody. mexican authorities say morales was captured yesterday near the border accused of laundering millions of drug procedures through united states businesses. the state department offered $5 million reward to him. experts say the arrest is unlikely to diminish violence in mexico's border states. >> new attitude at the ball pack, rules will change the way teens deal with discrimination.

>> welcome back at 4:52. the east bay regional park district will vote on a master plan to expand the park system. the "contra costa times" reports the district is considering 16 new sites in alameda and contra costa counties, part of an expansion project including an aggressive land-buying program. voters approved two bond measures to pay for it, $225 million in 1998 and $500 million in 2008. best district can acquire or lease any land if a new park it must be listed in that master plan. >> the head of tesla motors will reveal details of the plan to create a through form of transportation called the hyper loop. he sent out a tweet saying that he will publish the design by august 12, critical feedback for improvements is much appreciated. right now there is only one company working on a similar technology as the palo
