>> good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm matt keller, in for carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the weather forecast. here's frances dinglasan, in nor lisa argen. good morning, francis. >> hi, matt. good morning, everyone. we are starting off pretty cool with a lot of low clouds over most of the bay area. one of the cool spots, 50 in novato. a little milder in mounds view at 59 degrees. cloudy conditions, as well, around monterey bay, 53 in watsonville and monterey. low clouds and fog coming in from the golden gate bridge here from the coast. we will see a lot of sunshine once again in the inland communeets. very warm temperatures. upper 80s to lowed 0s. around the bay very mild as

to perform for everybody this afternoon. we have a look at the 6.2-mile long route. abc7 news is a spaed sponsor and we have a special jumbotron this year. if you are one. walkers you will be able to see yourself on the jumbotron when you walk by checkpoint 3, right in the middle of the route. tell your friends and family at home. they can look for you as we stream the event live. walkers so far have raised more than $2 million to date online. since 1987 a.i.d.s. walks across the u.s. have raised more than $677 million. today's goal is about $3 million. 28 local organizations benefit from all the money raised through today's walk. it's not too late to become a part of the walk or to donate. go to aidswalk.net. you can call or text. a lot of ways to get involved

' side from the wonderful dan ashley being part of the event, we have our whole abc7 news event at checkpoint 3. if you are a washinger you can be encouraged by them. they will be passing out water a lot of fun to be had today and it wraps up at sharon meadow this afternoon. abc news, kira klapper. >> thank you, kira. >> in breaking news, one person is dead and several lanes of interstate 280 in redwood city of closed following a crash early this morning. it happened just after 2:30 on southbound 280 near wood side road. all southbound lanes of 280 are closed at that location. >> again, one lane is open. we will have more on the story when we get more updates.

developing news in san francisco. one person is dead and a second seriously injured after a gun battle in the city's tenderloin neighborhood. it happened in the area near larkin street. when officers arrived on the scene, several people were shooting at one another on the street. one person was hit and died at the scene. police say a lot of people were in the area at the time of the shooting. >> whatever these people had between them, obviously they had decided to settle it and they didn't really care who was around. >> the person who died is not believed to be an innocent bystander. one person was taken into custody. the injured person was taken to sf general. the shooting remains under investigation. in other developing news, a champion sprint car driver has been hospitalized with major injuries following a roll roll-over crash at the ant job speedway. it happened about 9:00 last night. they were about midway through the main event and a driver from new zealand crashed with another vehicle. >> going down the front stretch and sometimes stuff like that happens, you make contact. we see it a lot.

him and other car got together it sent hem upside-down down the front straightaway and he ended up landing upside down. it took crews about 40 minutes to free murphy. he was taken to the medical center. many people are calling for changes this morning in the weak -- wake of the shooting death of florida teen trayvon martin. thousands of people took to the streets yesterday for rallies held all across the country and for here in oakland. we have more from the rallies in oakland. about 50 people gathered for a candlelight vigil at sundown honoring trayvon martin and other victims of gun violence. >> until all the young people are safe, none of us are safe. >> this was the most subdued group but the day started with a loud demonstration at the federal building in oakland. >> peace on the streets! peace on the streets! >> the mayor made an appearance. she was pressed about the police response to demonstrations last weekend that resulted in

violence and vandalism. she said the police are using a new strategy. >> even the way they have been in the demonstrations lately. you can see we have them out walking with the demonstrators. >> there was a peaceful presence throughout the day. a different group made up of bicycle demonstrators took to the streets and the police were always close behind. about 100 people road through the city on a mission to raise awareness in an unconventional way. i'm riding because i think justice that is not been served. i don't think we know about unity in this town. >> the bicyclist enjoyed a traffic-free and police escorted ride in front of city hall. they continued on until west oakland. police say one demonstrator was arrested with several outstanding warrants, but that was before any protests started.

otherwise no other arrests were made. abc7 news. rallies were held all across the nation yesterday, calling for justice for trayvon martin. our reporter has that part of the story. >> the same message rang out in 100 cities across the country. >> the might must go on! >> it's a fight for justice for trayvon martin. it was one week ago a jury found the 17-year-old killer, george zimmerman, not guilty. >> zimmerman brought a gun to an unarmed battle. >> martin supporters want the department of justice to file criminal civil rights charges against george zimmerman. that's why so many rallied in front of the federal building in san francisco. >> let's move forward now to make sure we have justice certainly for young, black men. >> while in san francisco, house minority leader nancy pelosi admitted even she was surprised by the jury's decision. >> i was one devastated by the verdict. i just didn't understand it. it helped channelize our

attitudes in a very constructive and effective way. >> she's calling on local governments to review their racial profiling attitudes, as well as the "stand your ground" law. meanwhile, many of americans are having an honest conversation about what it's like to be african-american in this country, including the president. >> trayvon martin could have been me 35 years ago. >> i fear for myself because i'm a youth just like him, a black youth, so it could easily happen to me, just like it happened to him. >> hundreds of californians plan to head south to rally in anaheim today. abc7 news. questions are being asked about whether the limo driver involved in a deadly fire at the san mateo bridge was too distracted to react quickly when the fire broke out. it is reported he was on his cell phone fighting with his estranged wife before the fire started.

in an interview, brown's wife said he had the music turned up loudly so the limo's passengers couldn't hear them arguing. five people died back in may. there was a shooting death of a 30-year-old man. police responded to a shots fired call yesterday afternoon. they found a man a few blocks from his home on larkspur avenue. rodriguez had been shot several times. a mysterious substance forced the evacuation of a store at hillside mall last night, a shoe store. customers described hearing a small explosion and started suffering from irritated eyes and throws. >> we checked the video cameras and observed what we could from there. and there were some areas not covered. unfortunately that was the area that people describe where this sound that they heard occurred and we were unable to get any video feed in that area. >> 17 people reported having symptoms. five were treated by paramedics.

fire officials speculate it may have been mace or pepper spray discharged. we have video of a 29-year-old man stealing a transit bus. the man stole the bus friday morning from a transbay terminal. the man drove 100 miles before the officers put down road spikes to flatten the bus tires in oakdale. mass is in jail facing charges of reckless driving and grand theft. he already had a warrant for his arrest for stealing a car. >> we will turn to weather. frances dinglasan joins us now. cool out there this morning. >> cool in the 50s, but the inland communities will see sunshine. i will get to most of that. here's a look from the julymer east bay hills. you have to be below the clouds to see the sunrise that happened. beautiful. the details coming up. >> more news about the deadly

>> cooler temperatures are helping firefighters make progress against a wildfire burning in southern california.

the fire has burned 42 square miles outside idyll wild outside palm springs. the fire is 49% contained but thunderstorms expected to hit today could be a threat to the progress. mandatory evacuations remain in place for about 6,000 people. the fire has destroyed six homes and more than a dozen other buildings. detroit just became the largest city in u.s. history to file for bankruptcy. now residents wonder if they will see improvements of a years --after years of neglect. today on "this week" the detroit mayor goes one-on-one george stephanopoulos about what the city's discussion to go bankrupt means for the future. you can watch it here at 8:00. >> housing activists demanded stop the foreclosures right outside the home of the ceo of wells fargo. >> the alliance of californians for community empowerment organized yesterday's rally in

san francisco. protest organizers believe as well as fargo could limit foreclosures by reducing the principal many borrowers owe. wells fargo issued a statement our work to help people pay balance have left to a lower foreclosure rate the last year. although the economy is recovering, it's little consolation for those who have looked for a job and come up empty-handed. he we have the story of a man who came back from the brink of despair by creating his own job and now he's helping others do the same. >> tech shop is place inventors and crafts people come to learn new skills and use few tools. inside you find this man working on a laser cutter and outside a man is sleeping on the pavement next to the shopping cart. but it turns out they have something in common. >> in 2011 was the first night i spent in a homeless shelter.

>> he was a out of work person who went into a spin but he heard two talking about tech shop. >> but he heard two of the people talking about the tech shop. he checked into it. >> it so happened they had a christmas special with the exact amount of money i had on me so i bought a one month membership that came with two classes, took the two classes and the rest is history. >> he finds out he has a knack for laser cutting. he started out making parts for other people's projects, then he began teaching classes on it. now he has his own laser cut are he and makes a living with it. >> i've done pretty well the last year and a half. >> he didn't want to stop there. that's when he was on general assistance. and he thought this would be a great place to start something to help other people like him. >> one thing i noticed inside the shelter is an abundance of potential. >> so he set out to create what he called the learning shelter. >> all the resources you need to live, because the resources a person would need to learn so kind of like a tech shop and homeless shelter worked together. >> he had others on board who

never new mark was homeless until his story was featured. >> makes what he's doing even more impressive than before. >> it was an interview that almost didn't happen. >> i thought i wouldn't tell anybody where i had been. i thought it would be my secret the rest of my life and coming out i realized if i went it a secret i wasn't going to be able to help people. >> in san francisco, abc7 news. new details about a reward for information identifying the person who left out poisoned meatballs throughout san francisco. the reward now stands at $5,000. the tainted meatballs were found in the diamond heights and twin peaks neighborhood. police believe the strychnine meatballs were left out to kill dogs. one dog died earlier this month. federal officials will no longer allow distressed peregrines to be rescued from bridges.

they often nest there to hunt that are favorite foods, flying birds. about 2,000 live in california, compared to just 10 forty years ago or 10 four years ago when they were placed on the endangered species list. we go from the sky to the water. these fish are some of the rarest. some viewers tell this guy the fish whisperer, traveling the world to get face-to-face with some enormous fish. abc news joined him for a journey to thailand to see fish that some people called living fossils. >> people don't realize freshwater fish are some of the most endangered animals on the planet. >> some of the fish weigh more than 2,000 pounds. it could say several people to help him get a closer look before he releases them back into the wild.

>> a place near cleveland packed 110 mile-an-hour winds yesterday morning. a wall of the school's athletic center collapsed and other buildings were damaged. the college president said she's grateful nobody was hurt. the college will remain closed while all the damage is assessed. at least five people were injured in georgia when heavy rains caused a stage tarp to collapse during a concert. 1,000 people were watching a band play at a breast awareness concert in a downpour caused the tarp to come plummeting town on the band. five injured, four were taken to the hospital. they have all been treated and released. seeing some extreme weather across the nation there. we have things relatively calm here. >> there will be some cooler temperatures in some neighborhoods. it is thicker along the coast and we will show you live dopier 7hd. picking up the low cloud cover.

it is starting to clear out in inland communities. concord reporting clear conditions, as well as san jose. we will go to a live view now from our kgorov camera. you see the trees aren't moving much, but the flag there near the bridge, a light breeze. around 5 miles an hour from the southwest. we have low clouds causing slight arrival delays about 34 minutes. check the air lean if you are picking somebody up. right now 53 in san francisco. 58 in oakland and 59 in mountain view. so we see more of the thick, low clouds across the golden gate bridge here. you can't see the towers there. and some fog could develop in the valleys once again, even drizzle possible in some of the valleys and along the coast. 52 in santa rosa. 56 in napa. and 50 in novato. more gray skies from emeryville looking out toward the bay this time and trash you island. here's what you can expect this time of day. morning fog and drizzle.

cloudy at the coast. they will stick around pretty much most of the day. and then cooler the next few days. you will notice temperatures come down a few degrees. so we've got two competing systems. we have the warm air mass over land, cool sea breeze as well. and more of the influence bringing us slightly cooler temperatures inland. along the coast we will see the fog and the clouds pull back. even 3:00 this afternoon you will see them all along the coast and parts of the peninsula, as well." inland communities should see a lot of sunshine earlier on. highs today range from the upper 70s and even mill 70s milpitas, 57 to 84 in morgan hill. 76 in palo alto today, 70 in milbrae. keeping it cool in the sunset district around 62 degrees. also the north bay getting up to 101. that's the hotspot. a lot of 70s out there from san rafael to petaluma.

that's cooler. and also 70s and upper 60s in the east bay. 68 richmond, 68 union city. look for plenty of sunshine early on. a little bit cooler compared to yesterday. inland areas, 90 in livermore. 85 in san ramon. and you heard kira reporting from golden gate park. come and join of the aids walk san francisco today. a lot of the abc7 folks will be there, lug dan ashley. 9:00 cool and breezy. temperatures in the mid-50s. by 11:00, right after the walk starts, we will see it come up a little bit to 58 degrees. then 1:00 this afternoon, some sunny breaks. but still fairly cool and mild at 60 degrees. by 3:00 we will see the warmer temperatures. low fog will start to roll in toward the early part of the evening and we will see temperatures around the low 60s. overnight tonight the clouds return again. we will see cool numbers, but

>> the giants and their fans hope to come up with a way to keep the seagulls away from the park. some people thought of alfred hitchcock when the gulls circled in a game between the mets and the giants this month. wildlife experts point out the ballpark serves as a bountiful beau pay thanks not food dropped by fans. it is illegal to shoot the birds and bringing in a falconer to scare them away could become a gruesome scene in front of the fans. >> next, a live report from golden gate park to tell us about today's aids walk

good morning, everyone. we have been showinga lot of low clouds out there so i wanted to show you something different. clear conditions over san jose right now. temperatures are on the cool side, mainly in the 50s. but we have the low clouds, fog, and even drizzle, especially along the coast. temperatures in the 50s to low 60s. this afternoon will be mild. plenty of sunshine, especially foreign land areas where you are going to come down a few degrees to the mid-90s today. that's your high, instead of upper 9os. we will see upper 50s along the coast. this evening the owing returns and temperatures will be in the mid-50s to upper 7 tos. we have another cool-down in store for us and i'll tell you more about that with the accuweather seven-day forecast next. >> thanks, francis. very important today, about 25,000 people are expected today in golden gate park for the 27th annual aids walk. abc7 news is a proud supporter of event. kira klapper joins us now live with what is happening. kira.

>> hey, matt. everyone is actually here now getting set up. get this, those behind me, it's one of the multiple fundraisers for multiple years in a row. they have more than a thousand walkers come from their company today. we are in sharon meadow in golden gate park. the event starts at 10:30 this morning. it is 6.2 miles and it winds through golden gate park. again, 25,000 walkers are expected this morning. we have a special treat for walkers this year. abc7 has a jumbotron. so when walkers walk there right in the middle of the route you can see yourself. you can tell your friends and family at home they can look for you because we are streaming it live on abc7news.com/live. along the route, a reminder why raising this more than is so important to find a cure.

deadly, within hours of each other on friday is raising fear about the safety of thrill rides. chuck sievertson tells what you happened. >> rosie died riding a 14-story high texas giant roller coaster at six flags in arlington, texas. >> she fell out of the car and just fell out of the sky. >> family members say it was her first time at the park. they sat with her in the roller coaster car. >> the daughter and her son-in-law, they were yelling and screaming, my mom has fallen off, my mom is gone. and they were screaming when the car came back in. >> what happened? >> she goes up like this, and then when they dropped to come down, that's when it released and she just tumbled. >> carmen brown telling the dallas morning news she was concerned her safety harness was not secure before the ride took off. >> they do have safety precautions. they check everybody. >> in a statement six place said we are committed to determining

determining the cause of this tragic dent. and in ohio state inspectors are trying to figure out how a boat backwards on a shoot the rapids a shoot the rapids rides at the popular sandusky park. seven people remained injuries. we learned there's a patchwork of state laws when it comes to amusement ride safety. even police have little or no experience identifying safety issues. >> the law enforcement officials has no special training on the amusement rides or amusement ride safety or even the mechanics of amusement rights. >> meanwhile, the giant roller coaster remains closed but the rest of the park remains open. chuck sievertson, abc news, new york. starting today public officials in the east bay will celebrate national nelson mendela day. they will honor him the black leader in berkeley.

road. >> since food trucks exploded in san francisco, there's been some competition with brick and mortar restaurants. restaurants figure if you can't beat them, join them. >> it doesn't look that different than a typical food truck but the orange and white food truck is bringing the restaurant scene to the streets. >> with chips? how's my chips? >> i got the kiwi salad. >> the restaurants take turns offering food. this woman was thrilled she got to order from this shanghai restaurant. >> i used to live by there so when i saw that they would bring it here for lunch, i thought that was amazing. palo alto based e-club came up with the idea. so far they have 40 restaurants participating. >> so we have a team of people who scour the city, who know was -- what is already good and who find the undiscovered things that people need to know about.

here's a live look at san jose. it's been hot the last few days but there's a little bit of a cool down today. frances dinglasan is joining us now. we've been hot in the south bay the last few days and we could use a little break. >> you will get a little bit of a break with temperatures dodge down a few degrees. you saw some of the sunshine already in the inland areas. most is under a lot of low clouds and even fog and drizzle near the coast. live doppler 7hd, the bay area picking up some of the low-level moisture and some clouds out there around the bay. i did want to take you up to the reno area because a heat advisory is still in effect until tonight at 10:00. temperatures near record-breaking numbers, 105, 110 degrees. try to stay cool if you are headed out to the reno area. you might want to stay indoors. a beautiful live view from the east bay hills camera, showing

the low clouds spilling in from the coast and into the bay. temperatures on the cool side right now, 53 san francisco, 58 in oakland and 55 in san jose. we will show you another shot from emeryville. gray skies. so underneath the clouds is what we see. we can find temperatures also in the 50s, in santa rosa 52. and papna 56 right now. the fog across the golden gate bridge here. you see the hour obscured in the fog. this is the story for odd. low clouds, patchy fog and even some drizzle along the coast. dowdy there and cooler numbers in store. here's why. we have a warm air mass over the land and cooler air over the water. so this is going to increase the sea breeze today. temperatures will be coming down today and also a little bit tomorrow. numbers will be slightly below average. here's a look at the forecast

model showing the fog and clouds pulling back to the coast. but notice even 3:00 this afternoon they kind of stick around the coast all day long. mainly sunny conditions around the bay. the closer you are to the coast, the more clouds you are going to see. temperatures in the south bay will be very comfortable and mild. 70s and 80ths. 80 in san jose. 77 in sunnyvale. lack for upper 5 0s as well in palo alto and only upper 50s pacifica and half moon bay. downtown san francisco getting up to 65 degrees with a lot of those clouds throughout the day n the north bay 77 in sonoma, 9 in napa. you are definitely coming down. but eats still going to be nice and mild for you. also 72 in san leandro. hercules hitting 75 today. look for numbers to hit the low 90s, mid-90s. not near 100 like yesterday. 94 brentwood, 87 in concord. if you are lived to the giants

despite a disappointing dishalf of the season, the giants find themselves just four and a half games behind first place arizona. before last night's contest, ryan vogelsong came to the mound. he hopes to return soon. san francisco in the first. marco scutaro with the double down the left-field line. arizona threatened to take the lead in the fifth but with the bases loaded matt cain gets goldschmidt for the third out. cain went five innings, allowing just 4 hits and 2 runs. giants got some insurance in that half of the inning as mr. mvp, buster posey, goes deep to center and made it 4-1. his 14th of the year. the d-backs got one run in the sixth, but no more as they strike them out. giants have won five of their last six. the a's are trying to rebound from friday's loss to the angels. dan strailyly had another strong outing, giving up just two runs over 7 innings. he struck out four.

d.j. wilson was better. he threw 8 1/3 innings. he gave up three hits and striking out eight and at one point he retired 18 straight batters. the angels' runs came on the sac fly and the solo shot in the 7th. l.a. wins 2-0. texas also lost. a's leading the west at two games. the warriors continued summer league play in las vegas. playing against the lakers. here's a show. here's the tough jumper. the comeback. arizona product cam jones also played well. he knocks down this jumper. then gets open and scores from downtown. jones had 18 points. the warriors win their twelfth straight summer league game. 83-77. they now meet charlotte in tonight's semifinals. excellent britt golf and football at lake tahoe.
