"the royal baby: heir to the throne." good evening. i'm dan abrams, and thanks for joining us. it's a boy. it was expected to be a baby announcement like no other. steeped in centuries-old british royal traditions. a jealously guarded secret released via a bulletin, driven from a hospital to a palace, framed and placed on a royal easel. and only then displayed for the world to see. but this time in 2013 the celebratory announcement that kate, the duchess of cambridge, had given birth to a healthy baby boy, came via e-mail. with all the pomp and formalities coming shortly thereafter. and abc's lama hasan was there.

>> reporter: the waiting is over. it's a boy. a future king. eight pounds and six ounces. that's britain's 43rd sovereign. a nation rejoices. >> it's a boy. >> reporter: as soon as the announcement was made, people rushed here by the hundreds, and you can hear them cheering. and this is what we've been hearing earlier today. now, the easel has been placed on the forecourt of buckingham palace, and everywhere i turn it's either tears or people are singing "god save the queen." others are singing "happy birthday." everyone here is ecstatic, carrying either a glass of champagne or holding their cell phones high to capture this momentous occasion. famous london landmarks proclaim the news. fountains turn blue. the new father let it be known that "we could not be happier." and the prime minister spoke for the country. >> it's a wonderful moment for us. a warm and loving couple who've got a brand new baby boy.

>> reporter: the first lady and the president also wished them all the joy of parenthood and "the american people are pleased to join with the people of the united kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince." in keeping with tradition the news was displayed in a bulletin posted in the forecourt of buckingham palace. the crowds rushed to see for themselves. but in a break with tradition, a statement was first released to the press. on the hottest day of the year the anticipation had reached a fever pitch. the duchess of cambridge gave birth at 4:24 in the afternoon. they had kept it under wraps for four hours here at the lindo wing of london's st. mary's hospital. or the limbo wing, as it was previously called. in the very same suite that diana, princess of wales, gave birth to william 31 years ago. >> may we see your son? your royal highness. thunderstorm. the baby was delivered by this man, dr. marcus setchell, the queen's gynecologist, no less. the couple attended prenatal classes from renowned teacher christine hill, who described kate as "delightful." and pronounced that william will do the right stuff on the day. bookies too have been busy as well. >> it's seriously busy. we've got 16 markets at the moment. the big one's the date, when the baby will arrive and the name. >> i don't think they're going to go with something like cadence or north. >> reporter: most were betting it would be a girl. >> alexandra's the current favorite but charlotte's been very busy in the last few days and interestingly diana. >> hello. uncle harry? yeah, it's me, heir apparent. royal baby. you know. kate and will's kid. what? you're playing billiards and you've lost your trousers? again? >> reporter: all this relegates uncle harry to a distant fourth in line to the throne. a role it seems he's been practicing for.

>> i'm sure he's in the classic uncle mode of someone who's a friend but doesn't really have to take any real responsibility. you kind of want him to take you out and get you drunk when you're about 14. i'm sure that, you know, when that child has to take its first precious steps into the world of nightclubing prince harry will be there every step of the way like the helpful uncle he is. >> reporter: meantime, another royal arrival. prince charles tonight said how proud he was to be a grandfather. so what does one get the new baby and the new parents? well, the finnish government thoughtfully provided this standard maternity package that all finnish mothers get, complete with diapers, clothes, and condoms. for $20,000 one could buy this 19 karat gold bracelet that has, wait for it, a holder for diaper rash. all this will create an avalanche of royal baby souvenirs.

as the little prince lies in the lindo wing of london's st. mary's hospital, he has no idea the royal life that awaits him. as heir to the nearly 100-year-old house of windsor, the celebrity, the responsibility, and the privilege of his position. growing up royal. it's no reality show. it may not even seem real. but when you're the prince of cambridge, it's your life. and it includes some pretty spectacular perks. first, there are the homes. plural. the newest royal will have access to at least four castles.

the 24-room apartment at kensington palace where he's expected to grow up. >> i think what's really good at kensington palace is it's a royal residence. they've got all the space outside in the gardens they can run around in. but it's also right in the center of london, very close to a lot of their friends, a lot of their good friends live in west london. kate, as we know, enjoys going to the shops in kensington high street. so they've got all the amenities on their doorstep but also they have a very private palace that they can retreat to. >> reporter: then there's buckingham, the 775-room home where queen elizabeth resides and where he'll eventually live when he takes over the throne. there's sandringham, over 5,000 trees and wetland where the royals traditionally spend christmas with its 200-person-plus staff. and balmoral, the sprawling 50,000-acre scottish castle where royals usually summer. >> the queen spends her whole summer at balmoral.

>> reporter: prince yet to be named won't have to worry about transport starting early in life with the finest prams and carriages. >> kate's bought the trendiest pram around, called the bugaboo. you can see lots of them on the streets of kensington at the moment full of yummy mummies pushing them along. so kate will be joining the bugaboo crew when her baby's born. >> reporter: but that ain't nothing compared to what likely comes later. and we're not just talking about horse and carriages, but the fancy sports cars like maybe the british-made aston martin. and then there's the fame. third in line to the throne will be stepping out in style. he'll undoubtedly be the most photographed baby on earth. photographers tripping over his every coo. and this royal will not just be a local celebrity but an internationally known statesman, either in the more reserved role of dad william or maybe a bit more, shall we say, risque like uncle harry. but wait, we're not there yet. first he has to become a man.

and for that there will be help. as every generation of royal has had, a nanny, at least part-time, and of course eventually a staff at his disposal including full-time security detail. as for schooling, this royal will have access to the best of education. but he's expected to stay close to home until high school, just as william did. and then there's the bling. this young royal will one day oversee england's crown jewels collection, valued at as much as $30 billion. but that too comes later. royal watchers say don't expect kate to be making jewel-encrusted onesies. >> this baby is not just going to be dressed in bespoke designer outfits. i mean, let's face it. >> reporter: access to all this help won't mean kate and william won't be very involved parents overseeing the life of their baby boy. >> yes, you'll see william changing a diaper or two.

now that prince william and catherine have welcomed a baby boy, english betors who wagered on a boy are celebrating even more than the average brit. but other royal gamblers are waiting to find out, did they correctly pick the name of the eight-pound six-ounce heir to the british throne? book maker ladbroekes took in 50,000 bets alone after kate went into labor. never underestimate the british public's obsession with the royal family, said a spokesman. most popular names for the little prince include james and george. roadside assistance. george zimmerman is out of court but back in the news. today abcnews.com broke the story that just days after being acquitted of all charges in the shooting death of trayvon martin zimmerman apparently helped a family of four whose suv overturned off a highway in sanford, florida. witnesses quickly called 911, describing the scene. >> it looks like an explorer.

nose gear suddenly collapsing, sending the plane skidding down the runway, sparks flying. six passengers taken to a local hospital. some suffered anxiety attacks on that flight that originated in nashville. the incident caused delays that were felt across the country, but fortunately, there was no loss of life. the ntsb will now investigate.
