good tuesday morning, everybody. a joyous morning in london, where the new british heir is spending his first morning with his mom and dad. >> millions are keeping a close eye on the hospital doors where the new prince could emerge as soon as today. >> an exciting time. let's get the latest right now. abc's lama hasan, back on royal duty this morning, outside buckingham palace. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning to you guys. it was euphoric here, as soon as the announcement to the crowd outside. they were singing. others were toasting the happy royal couple. and you have to look at the newspapers this morning to capture the mood here, to capture the mood of the nation. front page headlines, i may add. "the daily mail," has oh, boy. one's a grandpa. one of my favorites, "the sun," the newspaper has changed its name to s-o-n. and "the daily mirror" goes with "our little prince."

this morning, a nation waits for its first glimpse of the future king. all eyes, again, watching the doors of st. mary's hospital, where the new family could emerge at any time. the arrival of the prince of cambridge heralded around the world. london landmarks proclaim the news. famous mountains turned blue, as did niagara falls. landers celebrating as only they can. >> and make a toast to the new prince. >> we've been celebrating all evening. so, we've been out having champagne. >> reporter: new dad, prince william, now on a two-week paternity leave. he released a statement saying, quote, we couldn't be happier. >> it is an important moment in the life of our nation. but above all, it's a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple. >> reporter: the royal couple will bring their bundle of joy

home to kensington palace, where he will probably meet his great grandmother, the queen. it could be days or weeks until we find out the name. prince william's favorite soccer team opted for hrh, his royal highness, for this jersey. and the celebrations don't end there. there will be a 41-gun salute at green park. there will be a 61-gun salute at the tower of london. and at west minster abbey, a the bells will ring a full peel. that's three hours of bell-ringing. i think i need to get my ear plugs. >> lama, thank you. >> if you have to ring them at some time, this is a good time. the royal family getting lots of good wishes across the atlantic. >> the president and first lady wished them the happiness of parenthood. the american people are pleased to join with the people of the united kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince.

we'll go back to london later in this half hour, of course. and tonight, keep it here on abc for a special edition of "20/20," "the royal baby: heir to the throne," anchored by barbara walters. our other major story unfolded at new york's laguardia airport. >> a jet lost its nose gear. that made for frightening moments as the plane skidded to a stop. here's abc's kristen fisher. >> reporter: ntsb officials are trying to figure out why the plane's landing gear collapsed when it hit the runway. 135 people were onboard the boeing. 737 from nashville. >> the whole plane went down quickly. that's when the door blew in. >> we felt this humongous jolt. like completely leapt forward. it was really intense. >> reporter: passengers describe seeing a shower of sparks, as the nose of the plane scraped down the runway. the plane finally came to a stop after skidding about 2,000 feet. >> emergency vehicles proceed to runway 4.

next arrivals are going around. >> reporter: air traffic controllers at laguardia airport scrambled to ground flights and send help. everyone onboard escaped through the emergency slides. but six passengers and four crew were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. >> from what we know, the aircraft landed on runway 4. and the landing gear collapsed. the nose wheel, specifically, collapsed. >> reporter: airport authorities say the crew had no warning that the plane was having problems. >> this is very unusual. almost always a pilot or a crew will get the indication of an unsafe gear. >> reporter: laguardia was shut down for two hours, cancelling flights across the country. >> they canceled my flight and refunded the money. the next available was on thursday. >> reporter: among those taken to to hospital, passengers reported back and neck pain. but there was no serious injuries. kristin fisher, abc news, washington. and now, to brazil. the pope's seven-day visit is triggering fresh security worries. his first visit back to south america turned into a security

nightmare after a crowd rushed his car. violent protests broke out later in front of the government palace in rio de janeiro last night, just after the pope departed his welcome ceremony. anger has been brewing over corruption and police violence all over the cost of the pope's visit. and for the first time, the pentagon is outlining u.s. options for getting involved in syria's civil war. general martin dempsey's letter to congress outlines five options, ranging from training and arming rebel groups to establishing a no-fly zones and taking control of syria's chemical weapons. price tags range up to $1 billion a month. dempsey warns that taking one step could lead to deeper involvement. don't look for ryan braun during the rest of the brewers' season because he is suspended. braun accepting a 65-game ban without pay for violating the league's substance program. it will cost the former mvp about 3 million bucks. he apologized and admitted to making mistakes. he's willing to accept the consequences of his actions. also this morning,

word that actor dennis farina has died. his most recognizable role is probably that as a detective on tv's "law & order." but he also played to bad guys on screen. before turning to acting, farina served in chicago's police department for 18 years. he died yesterday in scottsdale, arizona, after suffering a blood clot in his lung. dennis farina was 69 years old. >> he played a great bad guy. "midnight run," he was so good in that. >> and good guy, too. weather across the nation, let's take a look. flooding possible after some storms roll through the southeast. flooding in the middle of the country. showers from the mid-atlantic to new england. and also in the southwest. >> and expect a scorcher in texas. 99 degrees in dallas. and hotter than that in phoenix. very warm. very humid from baltimore all the way up to boston. but comfortable through the midwest. 79 sounds just about right for chicago. perfect score. the young man who aced his s.a.t.s. and he's not in high school yet. also ahead,

investors are making an average of $18,000 a sale. taco bell making a bold move by being the first in the industry to phase out kid meals and toys. the fast food chain says kid meals represent about 1.5% of their total sales. and researchers say, it's likely today's kids are more sophisticated and more open to eating healthier foods. it's good to be lady gaga despite hip surgery. her $80 million of earnings last year put her on top of "forbes" list of young celebrities. justin bieber was second with $58 million. taylor swift came in with a measly $55 million. a few million less than last year when she topped the "forbes" list. oh, to be young and rich. >> i hate it when that happens. we have a health alert this morning. another reason not to skip breakfast. a new harvard study finding that older men who regularly skip breakfast have a 27% higher risk of heart attack. experts think that skipping breakfast leads to more calories

today, yesterday, rather, when the announcement was made, they had four hours, nearly four hours of quiet time together, bonding, mother, father and baby, and then phoning their relatives before we and the rest of the world were let in on the secret. >> robert, let's talk about another big secret. the baby's name. why the delay in announcing it? is it possible they don't have the name picked out? and assuming they do, why wait? >> well, did you have your baby's name right at hand? i think they're doing what many parents do. they have a few options. and i think they're going to see what the baby's like and what it responds to. top of the betting here is george. that's a traditional, royal name. i, myself, am thinking for philip because they i think they want to do honor to the duke of eden borough, who has been sick recently. but the baby will have four or

five names and it can choose in due course which it wants when it becomes the king. >> let's talk about princess diana for a moment. you knew her personally. there's a lot of speculation of what influence she may have on this young couple, on will and kate. you can probably talk better than anybody about what her reaction would be. what her influence would be on her son and her daughter-in-law. what do you think? >> she would be absolutely delighted. she would be so happy that william is following in her footsteps, having his baby in the same spot where she had hers. but let's not forget, diana's one grandmother. the other grandmother is catherine's mother and father. what's very historic about this birth is that for the first time in british history, we have a baby who is half-royal but also half-commoner, to use our old-fashioned word. his grandfather and grandmother started life as a flight dispatcher and a flight attendant, working at london

asked her to work without panties, demanding kisses and dragging her around in a headlock while whispering sexual advances. filner earlier apologized for his behavior towards women but has refused to resign. george zimmerman came out of hiding just long enough to rescue a family trapped inside of an overturned vehicle. zimmerman and another man, sprang into action, freeing a family of four whose suv ran off the highway in sanford, florida. the crash happened less than a mile from where zimmerman shot trayvon martin and just days after he was cleared of all charges in that shooting. and sheriff's deputies in orange county, california, are being praised as heroes this morning after pulling a man from a smoking car seconds before it exploded into flames. the 49-year-old driver possibly suffered a diabetic shock when he crashed. that man is recovering in the hospital. one of the deputies says he's no hero. he was just doing his job. listen to this one. from california, a very

>> abc7 news starts with breaking news. >> good morning, i am kristen sze. >> from the south bay, police are investigating the mysterious death of a seven-month-old baby. matt keller is in south san jose. >> the san jose police department have confirmed to me that a seven-month-old baby boy was found dead at this complex. an officer said this is a crime scene. the homicide unit is investigating the case according to the santa clara county child theft protocol. the 9-1-1 call came before 1:15. police responded to the 5300 block of mccotty circle much the cause is not known. no arrests have been made in connection with this case. police say it is too early to
