mayor's race after another sexting scandal. >> but weiner with his wife by his side says he is not going anywhere. abc's kristin fisher is joining us from washington with more. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: anthony weiner was asking voters for a second chance. but now, he's asking voters for a third chance at a political comeback. three of anthony weiner's rivals are now calling on him to quit the race for mayor of new york city. but the former congressman says he is not dropping out. >> i hope they're willing to still continue to give me a second chance. >> reporter: at a press conference yesterday, weiner admitted to sending more sexually explicit messages to a woman as recently as last summer. more than a year after that same kind of behavior killed his career in congress. >> let me just reiterate to my wife, how sorry i am i did these things. >> reporter: his wife, huma, didn't just stand by his side. in a surprising move reminiscent of her mentor, hillary clinton,

she spoke out on his behalf. >> i'm very nervous. >> reporter: the former clinton aide is famous for keeping a low profile. but she's been actively campaigning alongside her husband since he announced he was running for mayor two months ago. now, with his candidacy on the line, she endorsed their marriage and defended him. >> i love him. i have forgiven him. i believe in him. and as we have said from the beginning, we are moving forward. >> reporter: hours earlier, weiner's x-rated exchange with the mystery woman was posted on a website called thedirty. >> while some of the things that have been posted today are true, and some are not, there's no question that what i did was wrong. >> reporter: weiner's opponents say his character and judgment are irrevocably damaged. but weiner insists that now he's learned his lesson. >> this behavior is behind me. >> reporter: the question now is will new yorkers believe him? a poll out last week had weiner in the lead three points ahead of his closest opponent, with 48 days to go until the primary.

diana? john? >> all right. kristin fisher in washington for us. thank you. breaking news from the gulf coast of mexico where a major environmental threat may be unfolding. fire has broken out on a drilling rig after a gas leak. the rig located about 55 miles from the louisiana coast. 44 workers have been evacuated yesterday when this blowout first happened. you can see the gas leak in this photo. just to say, it's not clear what caused the gas to ignite. the coast guard is currently on the scene. and more breaking news this morning. nsa whistleblower edward snowden may have found a new place to call home. after a month at a moscow airport, russia could grant snowden temporary asylum as early as today. snowden made the request last week after plans to go to several other countries never materialized. temporary asylum would allow him to stay in russia for one year and it could be renewed annually. the massachusetts state police photographer who leaked photos of the boston marathon bombing suspect will not be fired. sergeant sean murphy will instead be placed on desk duty, pending an official

investigation. murphy says he gave "boston" magazine those arrest photos of dzhokhar tsaranev to counter the glamorous image of tsaranev in "rolling stone" magazine. >> he didn't sell the pictures. he did not hide. that is so admirable. >> my dad's always been a huge hero to me. and throughout this process, he is showing the characteristics i hope to some day model myself after. >> sergeant murphy already served a one-day unpaid suspension. but the state police commissioner admitted that the groundswell of support from the public helped save his job. new this morning, we're getting a first look at the location where 19 elite firefighters were engulfed by fire in arizona. the site where they died is marked by an american flag. it includes a hot shots t-shirt hanging on a burned cactus.

the biggest municipal bankruptcy trial in u.s. history getting under way in detroit today. the city's $18 billion in debt. they want to put workers reti e retirees pension payments. but they filed three lawsuits to stop the move. the trial is likely to set a number of precedents on worker pensions. a new plan to help the post office ending door-to-door mail delivery. it would not impact curbside delivery. just that labor-intensive door-to-door service. the post office loses $15 million on mail delivery. apple stock is due for a big boost today. it's because it sold millions more iphones in the last quarter

performance-enhancing drugs. and as recently as last month, maintaining his innocence. fast-forward and the former mvp is nothing more than a cheater. >> i hope that ryan braun is forever remembered as the most despicable liar in the history of baseball. >> reporter: the 29-year-old had been suspended the rest of the season for using those banned substances he claimed he never did. braun finally admitting it, saying i realize now that i have made some mistakes. i am willing to accept the consequences of those actions. >> ryan braun has done everything opposite of what a role model should do. he's lied. he has criticized honest people. and now, finally, he's been caught in a big way. >> reporter: but major league baseball may have bigger fish to fry. according to espn's "outside the lines" braun is 1 of 20 players being investigated, including alex rodriguez, who also, according to espn, may face a harsher punishment than braun,

because he may have tampered with the league investigation. current players think it's a step in the right direction. but it may not be enough. >> lied about it. got away with it. tried to lie about it again. and got caught and still making $100 million-odd. >> he cheated the system at a time when us as baseball players made that commitment to clean up the game. >> reporter: paula faris, abc news, new york. the flight recorders from the plane that made that rough landing in new york are now in the hands of federal investigators. we have new images from inside the southwest flight. they were captured by passengers as that landing gear collapsed, sending the jet skidding down the tarmac at laguardia airport. you can hear people screaming. flight attendants trying to calm them down as the plane scraped along the runway for nearly 2,000 feet. >> the violence tells us that something failed catastrophically in that nose

gear. once you're grinding metal on the concrete, the best thing to do is to keep that airplane on the ground and keep it on the runway center line to it doesn't veer off left or right. >> the plane was towed away yesterday. but of the 150 onboard, 9 of them suffered minor injuries. and a dramatic crash at a railroad maintenance building in denver. officials say crews were doing a switching move when four cars derailed. the cars were on tracks that led into a service building. but the train continued through the facility. it rammed into a jet blower pushing it through the back wall of the building. luckily, no one was hurt. the fda expressing concerns over menthol cigarettes. but it's not ready to ban them. the mint flavor makes it harder to quit, especially among young people. menthol secrets account for one-third of all cigarettes sold in the u.s. the fda is seeking input from the health community and the tobacco industry. up next in "the pulse.

idea. officers came up with the idea when they looked at the research and saw how many fatalities happened during the summer vacation month with a spike and they realized how preventable the deaths can be. 52 percent of the fatalities were not wearing seatbelts and iowa decided we could do something about this. >> here the numbers we got from the c.h.p. with 30 percent related to no seatbelts and 27 percent are alcohol-related deaths and 22 percent tied to speed with 4 percent because of distracted drivers. it is time to be on your best behavior with the c.h.p. crackdown on i-80 starting today. >> developing news this morning from the east bay.
