alerts. >> good morning. our other top story this morning, a familiar message came from oakland leaders sparked by the latest murder of a 66-year-old woman known for her love of animals. >> we are joined by our reporter. what are they asking for? >> members of the community are asking for one thing: an end to the violence, saying enough is enough. judy salamon was gunned down on wednesday. on thursday there was a vigil in her honor and today the memorial grows for judy salamon. the city council members were calling for an end for violence and push for answers behind her shooting death. the 66-year-old was shot dead blocks from where she lived. she joins with neighbors who wanted to get private patrols. some were frustrated for not having an opportunity to share this with members of the oakland

police department. the captain who planned to be here at the meeting this morning was called away because of a planned demonstration throughout oakland tonight by protesters of the police department. some gathered here today and believe that the antipolice demonstration distracts from fighting crime in oakland. >> they really want to make a name for themselves? they would work with me. they would work with city council. they with work with our neighborhood on turning this around. >> frustration was the theme of the day. judy salamon was driving on fern street in the neighborhood when she was shot in the head. investigators have not released details about the crime but have said they are using surveillance video to put together clues. coming up later on abc7 news i will have more information about their efforts to hire private security and what that meant. was it simply someone to patrol the neighborhood? how much would it cost?

who would foot the bill? >> thank you. santa clara police are vetting a reported rape at a young woman's apartment complex this morning but questions remain in the deepening mystery after a search for a suspect. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is at the apartment complex. amy? >> it caught our attention when application say they are not hooking for anyone. we asked, what does that mean and they said they don't have anything to go on at this point so they do not have anything to look for. they are still here on the scene, though. they are canvassing the area looking for people to talk to, interviewing anyone who heard anything and looking for any evidence they can find. they say they got a call there had been a sexual assault at 4:00 this morning here in santa clara. they say that the call came from a woman, a young adult. it came in that he had a box cutter or a knife but police say they are still investigating. they are being very careful

about what they say because the case is just so new. >> we tread lightly on all the assault cases. we will talk to everyone involved. we will talk to any witnesses. a lot of the evidence and things that are going on, we will talk note of all the details and put them together. if anyone saw anything in the area around that time, in this area, you are urged to call the police department. >> look at this screen, it is torn from the frame. the initial report said he came in through the window. police say that is one angle they are studying and they are focusing on that as for residents of the complex, we spoke to several. they did not know what happened and they dodged the crime tape on the morning walk but they did not know why it was there. they didn't hear anything. they didn't know what happened. police say they are trying to figure out what happened but they say this is a very serious allegation and it is a high

priority for them. >> thank you, amy. we just confirmed two men arrested in a disturbing case in lake county will be in court next week. authorities say they held a teen girl as a same slave and forced her to work at their marijuana "grow" operation. katie marzullo? >> the men are scheduled to be in federal court here in san francisco on wednesday morning. right now they are facing drug charges, including the use of a minor in a drug operation. the criminal complaint alleges that the kidnapping, rape and torture of the little girl. under arrest are ryan baletto who police found in a trailer there was a large marijuana grow and authorities found a thousand marijuana plants, mostly more than 6' tall. also, 22 weapons were found.

that is not the worst. agents found sexual bondage equipment, a noose and a wooden rack used to immobilize a person and 4' long metal toolbox which air holes. investigators have found the 15-year-old alleged victim who said she was kept in the box for three days at a time and forced into sex acts and helping trim the marijuana plants. at the house, agents found ryan baletto's girlfriend and five children including a seven-month-old baby and 17 guns and in a gun safe, a ponytail of human hair. ryan baletto and patrick pearmain may have had more victims. >> fremont police are looking for a home invasion robber who escaped after a stand off in a family home. the members went door-to-door looking for the man on porter street. the area was on lockdown for hours after the man broke into a home around 6:00 pepper spraying

years. he is accused of holding a three women captive in his home for a decade. this morning the judge asked him if he understood the information given to him by his attorney. >> some things that i don't comprehend because of my problems throughout my years pretty much, yes, i understand what they have been telling me. >> he was arrested in may after one of the victims was able to escape and get help. he for get to lock the door when he left the house. >> new this morning from washington, dc, the lincoln memorial is closed this morning after the discovery that someone vandalized the landmark splat stepping green paints on the statue of president lincoln. the park police believe it happened before 11:00 our time and they checking surveillance to get a description on the vandals. the memorial will be closed until the park service can clean up that paint.
