philadelphia's history. nearly 8 inches of rain flooded the city and nearby camden county, new jersey. >> it made road and air travel a nightmare for many. that record-breaking rain is one of the nation's most extreme weather areas. there are others. abc's devin dwyer begins our coverage. >> reporter: this morning the normally tranquil hawaiian paradise did bracing for the biggest storm in 20 years. >> they told us to pick up everything and be prepared for a hurricane. >> reporter: residents have been stocking up on propane, emergency supplies have been flying off store shelves. >> basically they need to get themselves prepared. we sold out of generators. >> reporter: flossie is poised for a direct hit on hawaii's big island packing a punch not seen since hurricane anikkei in 1992. forecasters say flossie won't be as strong but could bring up to a foot and winds close to 60 miles per hour. heavy rain from summer storms has already created dangerous flash floods across the u.s.

in southern new jersey yesterday the waters turned streets into lakes stranding drivers on roads. at philadelphia's airport storms knocked out power. passengers hauled their bags out of the terminal in the dark. in north carolina the floods turned deadly washing away a 10-year-old girl and a 48-year-old man as they swam in a rural creek. >> they weren't in for just a few seconds and the current was so strong it swept them away. >> reporter: the raging water destroyed roads and consumed homes forcing firefighters to help this woman and her pet to safety. the sudden surge of rain caught many people off guard. >> whenever i woke up i could only see the top of the car, and i was like, oh, my god. >> reporter: rapid rainfall at almost an inch an hour also wreaked havoc in arizona where a tour bus returning from the grand canyon flipped over in a muddy flood. none of the 33 passengers was injured. devin dwyer, abc news. well, the good news after all those heavy rains, most of the country will be drying out today. >> our weather coverage

continues now with meteorologist jim dickey at accuweather. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john and diana. we had tremendous rainfall over portions of the east over the weekend. in fact, philadelphia, pennsylvania, had nearly 8 inches of rain just on sunday. that is the rainiest day on record for the city, and that is a front that continues to push its way towards the coast. good news is, much of the east drying out behind that front as we head through the day. now we witch over to the tropics. this is tropical storm flossie moving due west moving right towards hawaii. so it's expected to have soaking rainfall and flooding the main concern. also some gusty winds in the 40-mile-per-hour to 50-mile-per-hour rain, of course, rough surf and we will see the threat for mud slides and tracking it. back to you. a developing story from southern california overnight. video and images pouring in of rowdy crowds in huntington beach.

fights broke out and crowds began damaging property. police called it a major disturbance and were forced to use nonlethal ammunition to break up that crowd. they arrested eight people when it was all said and done but all things have remained calm overnight. also developing overnight, an airliner forced to make an emergency landing after a possible fire broke out. the iowa to st. petersburg flight landed in albany, georgia, overnight and all 161 people escaped safety. the allegiant air is now busing all the planes to florida. strong storms happened in northeastern pennsylvania. all five on board a copter were killed. a man and his son, a man and his daughter and the pilot. the chopper took off on saturday from near binghamton, new york and crashed 850 miles from philadelphia. in indianapolis, a congregation is mourning the loss of their pastor, his weg wife and others. a church bus was overturned with just a mile to go on a return trip from a michigan summer camp.

the 68-year-old driver told police that the brakes failed before it struck a concrete median and flipped to its side. well, the first direct mideast peace talks in three years set to begin in washington today after months of shuttle diplomacy. secretary of state john kerry arranged to restart preliminary negotiations when israel agreed to release more than 100 palestinian prisoners. both sides are sending teams to the meeting. it's still unclear if it will lead to new formal talks. protesters in egypt remain defiant despite a warning from the government security forces about an impending crackdown. the main security headquarters in a northern city came under rocket attack yesterday. weekend clashes between police and supporters of former president morsi killed at least 74 people. hillary clinton is returning to the white house today for the first time in months. president obama is hosting a lunch for the former secretary of state in his private dining room. clinton is considered an overwhelming favorite for the democratic nomination in 2016 but there is no word on what today's topic of discussion might be.

and former congressman anthony weiner is vowing to stay in the new york city mayor's race despite the resignation of his campaign manager. weiner spoke at a brooklyn church on sunday. his wife's 37th birthday. she was not business hi side. he alluded to his most recent sexting scandal. >> i've got faith here. faith is like that gps device in your car. if you make a wrong turn, it doesn't yell at you. quietly it says recalculating. >> republican congress maman peter king says weiner is not psychologically qualified to be mayor and the former top aide to president obama accused weiner of wasting time and space. pope francis returning to the vatican this morning after reaching out to massive crowds in brazil for world youth day. 3 million people attended the pope's final mass on rio beach where he urged to spread the faith and spread it to the fringes of society.

now, the visit was marked by the pope's call for the catholic church to shift from a cold intellectual message to one that is simpler and warmer. >> now the young women held captive in a house of horrors for a decade are taking steps towards a normal life. this weekend. amanda berry made her first public appearance after she showed up at a music festival and the crowd cheered for her wildly as she waved from the stage just a day before her captor accepted a plea deal. >> while amanda berry was enj enjoying the spotlight, another was enjoying privacy. gina dejesus put up a fence that was donated and grateful to receive that support from so many people, and it's been hard to take but there have been many visits from curious onlookers. >> i really wasn't when this happened. >> the difference is privacy, of her to be able to come out, walk out and do what she wants. >> gina's mother says the fence means a lot to her daughter because having to stay indoors was kind of like hiding

stocks sank in asia today with japan's nikkei index down almost 3%. it's sending u.s. stock markets into the red also with all major indices are set to open lower here. new increases at the gas pump, up eight cents a gallon in the past week. experts predict prices to climb till labor day. amazon announced a hiring spree overnight. the online giant is set to hire 5,000 new full time workers at 17 of its centers across the country and president obama will visit one of these this week. the weekend box office battle belonged to "wolverine." the comic book movie of hugh jackman's series took in an estimated 55 million bucks and earned the top spot. it was about $10 million lower than expected, though. "the conjuring" took in $22 million in second place and "despicable me 2" came in third. >> it could be the future of food. a burger made from test tube

huge backups where drivers were trying to get home. those roads will dry out during the day today but it will be wet along i-95 from savannah to jacksonville. flooding a threat in flagstaff and santa fe. possible thunderstorms in oklahoma city as well as dallas. if you're flying, airport delays are possible in kansas city and denver. back to the news and a tragic end to a boat ride on the hudson river for members of a wedding party just two weeks before the big day. >> this morning the bride and her fiance's best man are believed to be dead and another is charged in their deaths. aditi roy have the story. >> reporter: rescue crews pulled out the body of a man they believe to be mark lennon. >> there was a jet skier who was out and thought what he saw was a body. he telephoned a 911 call into our communications center. >> reporter: the victim was supposed to be the best man at a wedding in two weeks and one of six passengers on a moonlit boat cruise involving members of that wedding party.

authorities discovered the body of a woman they believe was the bride-to-be. 30-year-old lindsey stewart. >> nothing will heal this. >> reporter: investigators say the man piloting the 21-foot stingray on friday night, 35-year-old jojo john was drunk when he slammed into a barge near a major bridge. he's been charged with vehicular manslaughter. >> at this point we have probable cause to believe that he operated it while intoxicated. and that's the basis for the charge. >> reporter: the groom-to-be 33-year-old brian bond was knocked unconscious during the collision. he's the one who called 911 when he came to. bond is now recovering from a broken eye socket and preparing for two funerals instead of his wedding. some witnesses are questioning whether there were enough lights on the barge. investigators say it was difficult to see late at night on the water. authorities who are responsible for the barge say they are reviewing their safety procedures. aditi roy, abc news, new york. >> the driver in that deadly train crash in spain is facing

negligent sglepts homicide charges. he was pro-visivisionally charg. he was charged with the deaths of 79 people. the speeding train derailed and slammed into a concrete wall and a second american woman injured in that crash has died. 70 people are still in the hospital. more than 20 remain in critical condition. italy, a grim toll from another horrific accident, a tour bus slammed into traffic, plowed through a concrete guardrail over a bridge falling 100 feet into a ravine. at least 37 people are dead including children. most of the victims were pulled from inside the mangled bus. it's not clear yet where the bus had been coming from or what caused this accident. police in cannes, france, say they don't know who is responsible for stealing $58 million worth of jewels. police say they entered the carlton around noon and stuffed the suitcase with jewels and made a swift exit. it was the third

such heist in the resort city in as many months. one of the biggest jewelry heist in years. a maine man who was dragged out of his tent and mauled by a polar bear in a canadian national park continues to recover. he broke through an electric fence and attacked the man as he slept in a tent. fellow campers managed to scare the animal away. a park canada spokesman said the eight-person group was advised to hire an armed polar bear guard, but decided against it. well, a mystery stomach bug spreading across the country has sickened more in 15 states caused by a tropical cyclospora parasite but the source of the outbreak is still unknown. the afflictions have been linked to produce that causes diarrhea and flu-like symptoms. final look at sports. a dramatic win in the city of angels. >> here's our friends at espn with details. >> i'm max bretos. the dodgers continue their sizzling form since the all-star break. bottom of the 11th. tied at zero with the reds.

>> the c.h.p. is investigating a fatal crash westbound on 580 in richmond about 10:15 on sunday night and not affecting traffic. we will go over the pass in a moment but in san jose we are looking at clear conditions on all the freeways headed in and out of san jose, 101, 280, into cupertino. over the altamont pass you can see slow-and-go traffic to livermore and then it picks up in livermore and pleasanton. traffic is smooth at the bay bridge toll plaza into san francisco with no delay. >> new information this morning over the crash of asiana flight 214, the f.a.a. is ordering all foreign airlines to change landing procedures at sfo to avoid a repeat. matt keller has more on what this means.

cat? >> we are at the international terminal where arriving passengers may have noticed an increase recently of go arounds. this is a result of foreign carriers using a g.p.s. instrument approach rather than visual. a consultant told abc it gives are using visual approach because the glide slope indicator was taken out of service in june for runway renovations. and asiana flight 214 was cleared for visual on the runway before crashing july 6. >> it is abundance of caution what is going on with people more aware of the situation. the f.a.a. is responding to make sure everyone is on the same page and following procedures as much as they can for as long as they can. the f.a.a. announcement is a week since the go
