making news in america this morning -- breaking news. a wildfire racing through a southern california town, destroying homes and forcing evacuations overnight. we're on the front lines with the latest. international manhunt. a search intensifies for a man accused of murder, arson, kidnapping a teenage girl. we'll have new details on what may have led to the crime spree. one commuter spots something unusual on the subway. there it is. a shark. but how did it get there? we've got winners. three winning powerball tickets. we learned where they were sold.

good thursday morning, everyone. we'll get the winning powerball details in a minute. crews have been working through the night, battling a new and fast-moving wildfire. >> it's out of control in banning, california. that's in the desert, east of l.a., near palm springs. >> this fire surged to 6,000 acres. and we're seeing the damage as at least 15 homes have burned to the ground. hundreds of people have been evacuated. abc's cecilia vega is on the fire line for us. >> reporter: home after home went up in flames as this raging inferno, 85 miles east of los angeles, burns out of control. >> as the wind pushes it, as we panned earlier over to that. as it moves to the east, it will continue to do that as the wind pushes it that way, with the fuel and the topography. >> reporter: the fire has consumed several thousand acres. and last night, firefighters conceded there was no containment. >> depending on what the wind does, it can actually change

direction, as the cooling starts and starts moving the opposite direction. and as we move to that, we're -- we definitely will have a different firefight on our hands. >> reporter: mandatory evacuations went into effect last night for several communities in harm's way. emergency shelters were set up in riverside county, for anyone needing a place to spend the night. >> we could go the 243. the fire had crossed over. >> when i left, i was backing out of my house. and there was flames all around my car. >> reporter: several hundred firefighters are involved in this fierce battle. helicopters and special aircraft tankers are trying to tackle the inferno, as this all-night fight heads into the early morning hours and beyond. cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. >> cecilia will have more on "gma." now, to our other major story. a much happier one. that giant powerball jackpot. we've learned overnight that three winning tickets are out there.

>> suffice to say, we didn't win. >> no. >> and neither did abc's tahman bradley. >> one more look at tonight's winning numbers. >> reporter: whoever holds these numbers is about to collect a serious chunk of change. there's three winning jackpot tickets. those three people will share roughly $448 million. two of the winning tickets were sold in new jersey. one at the superstop and shop in south brunswick. and the other at acme markets. the other winning ticket was sold in minnesota. >> this is a winner. >> these are the winning tickets right here. >> reporter: probably not. but a lot of people across 43 states in washington, d.c., before the drawing, were caught up in lotto fever. >> got to be in it to win it. >> reporter: look at these long lines. >> if i -- i would give to my mom. >> reporter: from coast-to-coast. >> i spent like $50 every time i get paid. i don't win. somebody help me. >> reporter: helping fuel the frenzy, a recent game change.

the price of a powerball ticket doubled from a buck to $2 last year, doubling the amount going into the jackpots. some people won't buy a ticket until the winnings soar past $100 million and more. more than 4 million people won smaller prizes in last night's drawing. nonjackpot winnings total $66.8 million. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. just in case you've been digging around for those tickets, there in jersey or in minnesota. the winning powerball numbers. here they are. 5, 25, 30, 58, 59 and the powerball is 32. >> if you didn't have them, take heart. there's another powerball drawing on saturday night. that jackpot worth a mere $40 million. now to the growing political tension between the u.s. and russia. president obama has canceled a meeting with russian president putin, which had been scheduled for next month. relations between the two countries have been going south for a while now, over a number of disagreements. but russia's decision to grant asylum to edward snowden appears

to be the final straw. testimony resumes this morning after nearly a day-long recess in the military trial of the man who had carried out the deadly ft. hood shooting rampage. nidal hasan is representing himself. but they said hasan was not putting up a defense. the attorneys want the judge to change the rules they work under. the cleveland house where three women were held captive for ten years has been destroyed. among those watching the demolition yesterday, was survivor michelle knight. she released yellow balloons to represent the millions of children who have gone missing or died in captivity. >> nobody was there for me when i was missing. and i want the people out there to know, including the mothers, that they can have strength. they can have hope. and their child will come back. >> ariel castro was forced to turn over the deed to that home and pay to have it demolished as part of a plea deal to avoid the death penalty. and there's new calls this morning for the mayor of

san diego to step down. the latest to accuse bob filner of lewd behavior, are two veterans. both were sexually assaulted while in the military. one said filner left her a suggestive voicemail. the mayor is currently undergoing a self-imposed rehab stint. major league baseball's players' union has appealed alex rodriguez's suspension for using banned drugs and trying to cover it up. a-rod was on the field in chicago, hours after the appeal was logged. it allows him to play until a arbiters ruling until november or december. northern georgia is bracing for another round of heavy rain and flooding. rising water is overtaking homes and roads, triggering evacuations and rescued. a mudslide in pickens county. and the backhoe sent in to clean up the mess, ended up getting stuck in the floodwaters. it's stormy across a big part of the country. severe storms around the texas panhandle. scattered showers from south

and welcome back. a new day brings new trouble for another megabank. this time, jpmorgan chase. the biggest u.s. bank says it's facing a criminal probe by the justice department over bad mortgages. it also admits that investigators have already concluded that the bank violated securities laws. this comes just one day after we learned that the government is suing bank of america. dangerous defect. forcing toyota to recall hundreds of thousands of trucks. front seat belts may not function in tacoma access cab pickup trucks. they were made from 2004 to 2011. 342,000 trucks are being recalled. toyota is notifying owners. they're promising free repairs. new front-end crash tests released overnight for small cars. half the cars tested well, including the honda civic, dodge dart and ford focus. the chevy cruise and v.w. beetle got marginal ratings. and there's big news about bacon that's tough to swallow. prices have soared to an all-time high as a mysterious and deadly virus spreads through pig farms. you might have noticed prices

several new england beaches closed to swimmering following a shark sighting are expected to reopen today. beachgoers were confined to the sand, after fishermen spotted two large sharks dangerously close to the shoreline in west port, massachusetts. officials say they're taking every precaution. now, for a look at the morning road conditions. wet highways from montana to minnesota and new mexico, into the texas panhandle and oklahoma. flooded streets in kansas and missouri. a slick ride across the gulf coast and into the northeast. >> and if you're flying, airport delays possible, in denver and along the east coast. in atlanta, d.c., philly, new york and boston. and now, to the desperate search for a missing california teenager. hannah anderson has been missing since sunday, when the body of her mother and her brother were discovered. >> police say she was kidnapped by a long-time family friend. they believe the pair was spotted in northern california. and then, again in oregon yesterday. here is abc's brandi hitt. >> reporter: an international

manhunt is under way for james dimaggio, who authorities say kidnapped 16-year-old hannah anderson, following a deadly confrontation at his southern california home sunday, that ended in this inferno. hannah's father made this plea to dimaggio, someone he had considered a family friend. >> let my daughter go. you've taken everything else. hannah, we all love you very much. if you have a chance, you take it. you run. >> reporter: amid the ashes, detectives found the body of hannah's mother, christina, along with the remains of a child, close friends believe is hannah's 8-year-old brother, ethan. however, authorities have not officially identified the remains. >> i'm fearful of hannah not coming home alive. >> reporter: angelina says that the children knew dimaggio as uncle jim. but that recently, hannah voiced concerns about dimaggio. >> i know hannah did say she was

a little creeped out when jim did tell her he had a crush on her. >> reporter: detectives are following several leads from texas to can canada and mexico, thanks to the first statewide amber alert, issued to all california cell phones. as this community near san diego holds out hope for hannah's safe return. now, dimaggio is believed to be driving that blue nissan versa. but detectives say he may also have ditched that car for another one. they're still searching through each and every tip that comes through their office. john and diana? >> brandi, thank you. former president george w. bush is expected to resume his normal schedule today following heart surgery. a spokesman said the president is doing great after going home from the hospital yesterday. doctors placed a stent on his heart and opened up a blocked artery. researchers have linked high blood sugar levels to a greater risk of alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. even the a person does not have diabetes, the study found that too much sugar in the blood can anniversary affect their mind.

researchers say keeping glucose at a healthy level may delay or prevent dementia. researchers may have identified a new brain food. for most of us, it won't take much convincing to indulge. a new harvard study showing chocolate keeps the brain healthy and sharp in old age. when older adults were given two cups of hot cocoa for a month, their blood flow was better and memory improved by nearly 30%. >> i need a cup of hot cocoa. >> yeah. sounds like a diet. cheerleading is apparently a more dangerous sport than it appears to be. researchers say many cheerleaders don't realize it when they suffer concussions. a study shows that more than 30% of them inaccurate self-report the severity of their symptoms and recovery. grammy winner usher will face off in court with his ex-wife on friday, now that she's been granted an emergency custody hearing. tameka raymond requested the hearing after one of the couple's sons got stuck in a pool drain at his home.

details. >> good morning. both sides are very far apart about what they want in a contract and are $100 million dollars apart. the panel they presented yesterday was appointed by governor brown and the board of inquiry listened to five hours of testimony from bart management and from the unions representing bart workers about why they have been at this gas for so long. at issue is salary, benefits and pension. the request for higher employee benefit contributions forces them into a zero game contract. bart management says that the latest offer is 9 percent raise over four years is fair. abart is asking the employees to play a larger role in sharing the cost of their generous pension. >> everything they have done since april is to
