good morning on this saturday. let's start with a first quick look at the weather with lisa argen. >> good morning to you. here is a look at san jose with plenty of gray this morning. temperatures just edging up towards 60 degrees. we are looking at is that burnoff on the way in the next couple of hours. we will feature more sunshine. fairfield has a breezy wind right now. that is what determines our temperatures in the inland east bay. it's not going to be too hot with low to mid-80s. partial clearing, low to mid-60s. around the bay, upper 60s to

lower 70s. one of the days of the weekend will be warmer than the other but we do have a warming trend for all coming your way. i'll have that for you in the next coming minutes. >> in developing news, bart and its unions are returning to negotiations to try to get a deal done. if they don't, governor jerry brown will step in as soon as tomorrow to prevent a bart strike this week. sergio quintana has the details. >> negotiators took a break with all sides committed to working through the weekend. >> we want to get this thing done. nobody wants to come back in 55 days. >> we would like to make sure that bart is as committed as we are to averting a strike in 60 days instead of tomorrow. >> earlier, union leaders said they were not happy about the governor's move to head off a strike on monday. >> we are hoping that announcement on what has been a slow moving day.

>> to keep trains running, the governor's office filed papers in san francisco superior court following for a court order if it's not settled this weekend. this is something that bart management asked for to guarantee service. >> to make sure there will be train service and to let know the agencies they don't need to have a contingency plan on monday. >> they welcome a possible court order for a 60-day cooling-off period. >> i think it's good that bart is not going on strike. >> they need to negotiate but if bart strikes, a lot of people in the bay area can't get to work at all. >> union leaders say their fear is that bart management will just delay the process. >> if the community wants a resolution to this conflict, it does not want to go through october.

folsom. one victim has life-threatening injuries. the other people were not seriously wounded. they got a call of a group of people fighting around a liquor store. they did arrest one suspect. in developing news, possible progress in the search for a missing only mother and criminal defense investigator. they found a body in the same area where they were searching for sandra koch. >> search crews discovered a female body in unincorporated vacaville in looking for sandra koch from oakland. the body was found within the search grid in an rural area west of i-80. she was last seen sunday evening with parole sex offender randy alana. police are calling him a person of interest.

her friends say she briefly dated him 15 years ago. signs like these were posted along the road. he is still hoping for the best. >> i was hoping that she would be okay when they did find her. >> they live a few houses down. >>. >> she comes down and work on our bikes and say hi. >> their time together left a lasting impression. >> it's unfortunate. to search a wonderful woman, so pleasant, a really wonderful person to be around. >> even though the body hasn't been identified forks now police tell us the search for sandra has wrapped up. >> 11 ground search teams and rescue helicopter are searching for a missing mw county woman but has no luck finding her. she went hiking on sunday. she was expected to return

to her san rafael home on monday. park officials believe she was hiked hiek go along the trail. she is an experienced hiker that goes frequently hiking alone. >> in developing news out of san diego, they have confirmed the body that was discovered in a burned out home is 8-year-old ethan anderson brother of hannah henderson. they are searching the idaho wilderness for james dimaggio. abc news reporter steven portnoy has the latest. >> they are deep in the idaho wilderness. >> they are camping in that area. >> 16-year-old hannah anderson was spotted along with her alleged abductor, james dimaggio. a man came upon the two near the river of no return.

>> they had backpacks on. >> he is a skilled woods man and he is accused of killing the mother and eight-year-old brother ethan and burning down the san diego home and kidnapping hannah. >> i think we should be optimistic she appeared to be in somewhat good health. >> authorities found the blue nissan concealed in brush. he is now about 70 miles from boise and he on familiar territory and may be prepared to hold out there. >> on foot or horseback, you can't drive vehicles in that area. >> authorities think the 40-year-old dimaggio may have had a crush on the teenager. >> if she is still alive, he may want to protect her. >> the case gave rise to an amber alert and massive manhunt. a plea came from hannah's

father. >> let my daughter go. you have taken everything else. >> in san diego, friends and family held a candlelight vigil for the missing teen. people said they were relieved to hear of a possible sighting but remain concerned for her safety. >> four firefighters are recovering this morning after they were hurt after battling a fire on treasure island. flames and smoke spread to the roof of the empty building. the fire broke out on the stairs of the building on 9th street. it took about an hour and a half to bring the fire in control. one of the firefighters is was hurt in a fall. none of those injuries are serious. in riverside county in southern california, some evacuation orders have been lifted as a wildfire continues to rage. still hundreds of residents aren't being allowed back into their homes. the fire has burned more than 18,000 acres and

destroyed 26 homes since it ignited on wednesday. it's now 40% contained. governor jerry brown contained a state of emergency for that area to have additional funding resources for the fire fight and recovery. >> six people are dead after a small plane crashed into two homes in connecticut. the prop plane went down near an airport as it tried to land in the afternoon. so far four bodies have been recovered from the wreckage. one of the homes was empty, but authorities believe two small children were killed >> lisa argen is here. >> it does show that it is pretty gray out. >> temperatures are in the upper 50s but plenty of airport delays. we are going for a high of

some drizzle out there. if you are headed out on the roads, cloud cover and fog. everyone should see some sun by this afternoon. meteorologist lisa argen has a slightly warmer forecast in just a few minutes. first this afternoon, italy will try to sweep suicide en in the racing in the semi cup finals. they took a 3-0 lead in the best of 7 series. today's race starts at 1:15 on san francisco bay. winner of the semifinals will advance to face new zealand. then they elected to move straight through the challenger's final. it kerms the america's cup challenger. we now know why police opened fire and killed a man in sunnyvale. police tell "abc 7 news" the man was armed with a nine

inch blade and charged at officers. it happened at the end of a two-hour standoff thursday morning on san pedro avenue. the man called 911 and said he had just killed someone. a woman's body believed to be his estranged wife was found in the home. >>. >> governor jerry brown is going to the u.s. supreme court over prison overcrowding. he has asked to overturn a lower court ruling that ordered california to cut its prison population by 10,000. they contend violent felons will have to be set free if the order is followed. >> in the first study of its kind, scientists have pinpointed differences in the developing brain that may increase the risk of cognitive disabilities such as attention hyperactivity disorder. they are hoping to develop tests that make an earlier diagnosis.

carolyn johnson reports. >> born four months early, it's hard to determine what this premie could face. they looked deep into the brains of premature babies to see what differences can be found at birth. the frontal lobe it helps human memorize and remain attentive. >> based on this, it's actually this. >> the risk for adhd is about six to seven percent. in preemies the risk can be as high as 30%. >> it's four to six more times common with similar birth weight group. >> use an mri this region was likely to be smooth and round. >> if we can show that is plea diktd i have could allow us to intervene early.

>> many children are not diagnosed until school age. they believe early intervention may teach the children to maintain focus. doing mri studies on all premature infants is expensive. it could save money in the long run. >> we can treat them early on and avoid it altogether. >> it's a significant problem with significant costs. if we can do -- we can really say these kids are at risk and intervene with therapists and prevent them from needing medication, you can say a lot of money. >> next step is to find out how well these brain anomalies predict it. some kids may not always be ready to go back to school after summer break but most love back to school shopping. 45 kids will take place at special event in targeting

in pleasant hill. each student gets $81 to spend on notebooks to clothes. target and salvation army is providing shopping sprees for 12,000 children. and low income children from several neighborhoods will get new backpacks today. they will have a chance to have some fun at back to school carnival. organizers aim to get them ready for school and enjoy them the day. they also help parents for back to school preparations. this the 15th year back to school carnival. event is only for families who have pre-registered. >> today protestors are planning a large rally and continuing effort to save an historic downtown berkeley post office. a group of 20 demonstrators

have been camped out since july 24th. they are protesting the postal service's to put the building for sale. they also against post office privatization. postal inspectors asked them to move off the set of the post office and on to the sidewalk for their sit than did sit-? >> they may face arrests. >> in the trial of an accused killer joseph maso. he is on trial for four murders. he is acting as his own attorney. he elected not to testify and rested his case. prosecutors rested their case on tuesday after calling 70 witnesses since the trial began in june. naso only called five witnesses. if convicted the jury will decide after a separate trial whether he should receive the death penalty.

>> parents and fans are elated in belmont this morning as the city's little league all-stars move one step closer to the world series. the belmont redwood shore all stars took on their counterparts from san bernardino. they were able to pull out an 8-1 win. larry beil will be later with sports. >> outside lands and music festival continues in san francisco. those of people went to the opening. chilly weather didn't stop them from streaming into golden gate park to see more than two dozen musical acts. sir paul mccartney who was last night's headline act. tonight's headliner is nine inch nails. the three-day festival is sold out. i wanted to go so badly but the morning wake-up call.

i heard from my friends it was chilly today, lisa argen has a slightly warmer forecast. >> we were planning on sunshine, 2:00 golden gate park, it's going to a take a while and it will be cool and bright enough. live doppler, sweep on mount st. helena. the marine layer is about 2,000 feet deep. it is sunny by the delta and breezy. emeryville you can see the deck of low clouds and the golden gate bridge where mist and drizzle is there, as well. 57 in half moon bay. 60 in san jose. mountain view, 61 degrees. san jose, cloudy, temperatures around 60s there. santa rosa the cool spot at 56. airport delays over an hour and 45 minutes. mount tam in the north bay,

pretty gray with the sunshine above about 2200 feet. so some drizzle below and mostly sunny with mild conditions for the afternoon. it will be on warm side inland but still below normal everywhere. that is changing though. the trend is for warmer weather starting tomorrow. subtle warming trend as this area of low pressure gets out of the picture. this has been the reason why we've had that extensive low cloud deck, breezy afternoons, this morning, rain up in crescent city. also the possibility of thunderstorms along the northwest coast. back home locally, it's the low clouds and fog that determine our warmup this time of year. we will look for mostly sunny skies for most of bay. fog does get hung up around point reyes. a little sun on stinson beach. it moves quickly back in around 5:00 and temperatures pick up about 2 degrees or so today. here is a look ahead in san

jose, 77 tomorrow. shy of the average high of 83. then look what happens, climb steadily through wednesday and slow drop off by the end of the workweek. another look for temperatures in our inland east bay with low 80s for tomorrow. upper 80s to near 90 as we head towards wednesday and then temperatures not getting too hot coming back town by the end of the week -- coming back down by the end of the week. 74 palo alto. 75, redwood city. 60s at the coast. 56 in downtown. 76, santa rosa. berkeley, richmond, 73. warming up inland a couple degrees here. just about two degrees. 80 in pleasanton feeling pretty good. 81 in walnut creek. look ahead, warmer day of the weekend with 90 inland

welcome back. san francisco police have launched a new twitter account designed to help people whose bikes have been stolen. the photo came from a concerned cyclist who saw a man with a device to cut off bike locks. the department created the twitter account to get in touch with victims of bike theft. >> they had to retake advanced placement exams

because of mistake by officials. 220 students had to retake the exams. many of students were sitting the mandatory five feet away from each other. they say the retest was more difficult. >> i walked in thinking i wouldn't do, as well. i haven't been doing anything. >> i wish we could go back in time and have original scores. >> school officials have admitted their mistake. they even filed a lawsuit to have the original test scores counted. the man accused of killing a 19-year-old nursing student in san jose is being held without bail this morning. a woman was shot and killed in the early morning hours of last saturday. she was a passenger in a car

that was hit by gunfire in downtown san jose. the suspect had his first appearance in court yesterday. he is being charged with murder. it appears he had no ties with the victim. they don't believe who he was trying to shoot or why. >> yahoo is getting a makeover. one of the largest icons is changing. plus the warning sirens that are supposed to protect you in one bay area county aren't working. what the county leaders say

clouds and fog making it all the way to east bay valleys. a couple more hours around the bay it will brighten up. look for the clouds to hang on for most of the coast but partial clearing, low to mid-60s here. a high of 66 in san francisco, inland, mild and a little warmer at you head out to the delta. southwest wind keeping temperatures from too warm. changes begin for a warmer afternoon and a look ahead features more summerlike conditions. president obama is calling on congress to turn the page on what he calls the bubble investment mentality that led to the collapse of the housing market. he announced steps he plans to take to strengthen the housing market. president says it's time to build on progress being made

by creating a better bargain for responsible middle-class homeowners. >> congress should give every american to refinance at today's low rates. we should help more qualified families get a mortgage and buy their first home. get construction workers back on the job, rebuilding communities hit hardest by the crisis. and we should make sure that folks that don't want to buy a home have a decent affordable place to rent. >> president obama is proposing to phase out mortgage giant fannie mae and freddie mac so private capital can play a larger role. they must preserve access for 30-year fixed rate mortgages. if you want to hit the music this weekend, san jose has a summer fest. they brought the stages more closer together. music isn't just jazz, tunes from big band and salsa. 122 acts and 1,000 musicians

we are getting a live look in san jose. right now there is some cloud cover and cool morning but temperatures will rise to the mid-70s across the city today. meteorologist lisa argen has an accu-weather forecast that will warm up ever so slightly across the bay area today. i got a tweet from an old friend in iza from san diego which is sunnier. >> in fact the entire state will be warming up. higher pressure will be building in from the south. you know we are looking at some subtle changes today. you'll probably notice live doppler 7-hd. low clouds and fog from of but it is sunny out by the delta. here is a look from emeryville camera, all the gray conditions here. we are in the 50s in some locations, los gatos at 60. more 70s around the bay than
