your drive coming along the bay bridge toll plaza the traffic is moving along fine in the center with the fast track lanes becoming up and metering lights are not on. >> abc7 news begins with breakings news. the red cross is helping 25 people find a place to stay after a fire in santa rosa. it break out at marlow apartment s at marlow road at 1:00 o'clock this morning with eight units damage. one person was taken to the hospital. investigators think the fire may have been started by a barbecue on a balcony. crews cleared the scene the last 45 minutes. >> a city-wide strike if hayward is underway. abc7 news reporter matt keller joins us with the dispute that led to the strike. >> 25 workers are here at the protest is underway if front of city hall in hayward. 50 workers will be here all day until 5:00 p.m. for the start of the three-day strike.

350 union workers are walking east job today and they include maintenance workers, clear california staff, and animal control officers, working without a contract since april 30. the city says the union is not engaging in negotiations and asking workers to pay a 5 percent pay cut on top of a 12 percent pay cut from last year. the city says the union is not negotiating in for faith and is asking to contribute more to the cost of their benefit packages. the city expects key employees such as miss dispatch, and wastewater treatment plant and animal care to not strike. organizers say protests will take place at five other city locations like the police department and water treatment plant and the city does say, though, they have a plan in place during the strike to make sure that all city services are available to the residents >> the federal government is giving the green light to

possibly on the bay bridge as originally planned after labor day. the federal highway administration says it sees no reason to delay opening the new president reagan while work is being completed to fix bad bolts which snapped early this year and are in the process of being retrofitted. the administration gave approval for a temporary "fix" to the problem which would stay in place until the prime minister fix is -- until the permanent fix is done. we are 20 days away from the opening if it happens on labor day. you can get the newest information on twitter@abc7news twitter@abc7news. >> and new details in the girl that the police say was murdered by her brother. the father is speaking out if an interview. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo is in the newsroom with that story. >> the father says his son did not do it, he was the first in the house after the standing and he could tell by his son's

demeanor he did not kill her. she was stabbed in the county home where she lived back in april and she and her 12-year-old brother were home alone. the boy told authorities a man with long gray hair came if the house and standed her. two weeks later authorities arrested the boy. we are not identifying him because he is a minor. this is video of the family at a vigil. the father says he and the family were cooperating with authorities in the beginning but he says they have since shut him out. >> we met when they wanted to and stop what we were doing and talk to them and one day they decided that my son was a suspect and they would in longer talk to us because it was a conflict of interest i turned him in, most people do not know that. that was hard enough. >> also, the rumors with reports of the number of wounds she suffered and where the body was found and says it is all false. >> his son is charged with

second-degree murder with an allegation for the use of a dangerous weapon. he pleaded not guilty last week in juvenile court. a horrible incident in the not by a butcher at a grocery tore -- had his right forearm amputated and was conscious when the firefighters got there and was flown to the medical center. our media partner reported that the butcher is 28 years old and this incident is under investigation. >> police are asking witnesses to come forward in a fatal shooting of a young man that happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon when gunshots were reported in the area. when officers arrived they found 19-year-old dead at the scene police questioned him in the area but so if they is made no arrests in the case. the man accused of fatally stabbing a clerk and scheduled for arraignment and it is

believed the 51-year-old was randomly attacked august 4, and police arrested the 34-year-old from hercules at a home near the store. his face was spray painted the color of the oakland raiders and said he allah asked him to go help people. >> horse owners are urged to advantage nature their animals for west nile virus because a chicken tested positive for the virus in novato. officials say horses are most at risk when mosquito activity high in the summer. 40 percent of infected horses may die. mosquitoes spread west nile and they get it by feeding on infected birds. >> if southern california this morning, the silver fire in riverside is now 100 percent contained, and official word from cal came down. burned000 acres.last weekend

blocking the southbound lane so one way traffic control is going to be in effect with heavy conditions down 580 and 580 over the altamont pass from tracy to dublin is bumper-to-bumper traffic at 25 miles per hour no top speed with no relief until 680. 580 from tracy to dublin is 43 minutes and hour 4 is twine minutes and 101 from san rafael to san francisco is under 20 minutes and outside it is going to be walnut creek drive so 680 away from highway 4 traffic is running smoothly and you can see no crashes to report. >> we have breaking news from the north bay where a barbecue grill could be to blame for a fire that broke out at a complexion in santa rosa, eight units at mar low -- at mar low apartments and one went to the

hospital with minor injuries. >> the new bay bridge could open on labor day weekend and the federal government is green lighting the only opening day despite cracked bolts that need to be repaired. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield explains from treasure island. >> there are broken bolts up there on the new bay bridge and some think it is still safer than us driving on the old outdated bridge in service now and, now, federal authorities are weighing in. they are saying it would be fine to put a temporary fix in place on the new bridge and let us drive on it while crews work on the prime minister solution. they got a fix but the federal highway administration sent a letter to caltrain say there is no reason to delay the opening. and a state senator likes the idea. >> you want to get people off the old bridge because it has been there sce 1989 we are told very explicitly by the

>> she has been released from custody and authorities are reviewing surveillance video and asking other hospitals to call if they see her around. >> happening today, city college of san francisco's annual faculty and staff meeting to kickoff the fall semester takes place to morning. instruction begins tomorrow at the main campus on ocean avenue under a cloud of uncertainty. the commission for community and junior colleges announced the school's accreditation is terminated in july. ty college officials are fighting it and have put in a request for review and the process could take months. there is a 13 percent drop in students registered for the fall semester. >> happening today, more fire crews will arrive to help battle a wildfire, which has consumed 1,200 acres in the tahoe national forest. helicopters are dropping water because it is in a remote area.
