. from new york city, this is "nightline" with bill weir. thank you for joining us tonight, in our pixel-crazed society, you know, nothing seems more identifying than a camera that can steal your soul. a famous group of people in southern california is voicing a new fear of cameras. they're celebrities with children. today's paparazzi is no different, but today, moms are trying to shield their children from all of the prying lens.

here is nick watts. >> reporter: moms are trying to stay away from paparazzi when they are just taking their children to school and other chores. and today, jennifer garner pleaded to make it stop. >> i love my kids. they're beautiful, sweet, innocent, and i don't want a gang of law-breaking photographers who camp out where we are, all day every day to continue to traumatize my kids. thank you for the opportunity to testify today. i would be happy to answer any questions. >> reporter: search jennifer garner and ben affleck, it seems to be out of hand. >> will they take the photograph. >> they will take the photograph, because it tells a story. >> reporter: just watch brittany

and her child in 2011. the paparazzi blames a new breed of no-holds-barred photographers that have hit the streets. >> i personally feel disgusted with the fact that there are these types of photographers out there that have no respect. back when i started, it used to be just a handful of photographers. and you know, nobody knew that we existed. >> reporter: now, jennifer garner along with fellow paparazzi-target halle berry will challenge a bill regarding the paparazzi who torments or terrorizes children, they could be liable for fines. >> no one told them they had to have children, or live in los angeles, no one told them they had to go to the popular

playgrounds or schools. these are choices they made. >> they have to take responsibility for what they do. >> you cannot be in a paparazzi hot zone and expect not to get photographed. it is ridiculous. it is kind of like going to the gator den and expect not to be eaten. >> we are moms trying to protect our children. they have a bounty on their heads every day. literally every day, there are as many as 15 cars of photographers waiting outside our home. >> reporter: ben afflec recently opened up to our own bill weir about his family. >> it is not healthy for society, or for my kids. so i really object to the objectifying the images of children. >> reporter: the paparazzi make a few hundred bucks a snap, it is gas money, not strike it rich money.

and the celebrity magazines publish the shots every week. >> hate me all you like. i'm the photographer, it is the general public, they crave it. they want to see it. >> babies and weddings are the most popular things that we show case. >> reporter: the recent excitement over little prince george in jolly old london explains the obsession with the celebrity offspring. >> the celebrity, you feel like they're family and friends even though you don't know them. >> reporter: and does the general public know okay what surrounds a celebrity kid paparazzi snap? apparently it is not pretty. >> the paparazzi swarm, large, aggressive men swarm us causing a mob scene, yelling, jockeying for position, crowding around the kids. >> people who are around that when they see the 20 photographers taking the photograph of a 4-year-old are

horrified. it is just that you don't see this sort of sausage being made. >> reporter: today his wife tried to change it. >> i am an actor, but a mom first, my kids are not celebrities, just like you want to protect your children i want to protect mine. what is the psychological toll of being the object of constant harassment. what happens to the mind of a child when the only thing they see is the aggressive paparazzi in pursuit? >> reporter: so what is the solution? >> they have the right to take the photograph as much as i hate it. as much as i hate my children are objects in that way. this bill allows them to do it. what we're asking them to do is take the pictures with dignity. >> reporter: okay, what about the guy who takes the photos? what is the solution to this? >> the problem is jennifer garner and with halle berry, is that they're the easier celebrities to get. it is kind of in new york, i

will be at sarah jessica parker's house at 9 a.m., she will be taking her children to school. >> reporter: and that is the scene we saw, so maybe they should alter their routines. and any solutions from the magazine that publish the photos? >> they don't have to live there, they can afford to live anywhere and still have their kids. it is a bit of playing the victim. >> reporter: so that is harsh reality, the l.a. paparazzi will never totally lay down their weapons and stop snapping the children on the street. i mean, it is a first amendment right. i'm nick watts. >> so should it be illegal to photograph the celebrities' kids? tell us what you think. and coming up, using aggressive hate to build one of the fastest growing parties in

an economic crisis reveals its miserable results in a lot of different ways. for example, a soccer player in athens scores a goal and celebrates with an apparent nazi salute. he used twitter to say he didn't know the meaning of the gesture, but it still cost him a lifetime ban from the league because that country is trying to contain the explosion of organized hit.

a nasty side effect of the debt crisis there. and after hearing that salute, and so many other details, i took a trip to the oldest democracy in the world to see if we could take a look at the far right group known as golden dawn. this is not how most politicians get out to vote. [ bleep ]. >> reporter: and policy debates are not normally settled with body blows. but this is what is becoming of politics in the cradle of western civilization. like most visitors to athens i couldn't help but wander the acr acropolis and wonder about democracy, a modern greek society, crippled by failed

leadership and a mountain of debt it cannot pay. with businesses closed, neighborhood es gutted and almo two out of three young greeks out of work, it is almost natural to look for somebody to blame. in that vacuum and rage of suspicion emerged a group called "golden dawn." to them, the problem is anyone with dark skin and foreign blood. and as tensions rise, the images in athens are showing the resentfulness on the wall. what is that symbol? >> that is the main symbol of the party. fear is their main tool. >> reporter: he is a young filmmaker who managed to charm his way into the inner circle of "golden dawn" and over the course of the month managed to capture the images of sheer racist hatred towards the

immigrant community. [ speaking in a foreign language ] >> reporter: that is staggering. turning them into soap, making lamps from their skin? that is crazy, in america he would be a candidate for congress. >> reporter: while the film sparked outrage by the majority of greeks and an investigation by the prosecutor, it is still considered the third fastest growing political party here, earning a seat in the parliament. >> there is a certain part that supports the party. maybe they think in the future they will have more power so it is good to have good relations. >> reporter: he said that instead of embracing the thoughtful democracy legacy of plato and aristotle, many of the

young greeks are more identifying with the movie such as "300." violent race-based attacks are on the rise. those are just the ones reported. and the party spokesperson has yet to face charges after a pair of nationally televised attacks on female opponents. [ speaking in a foreign language ] >> reporter: after he tossed a glass of water in one woman's face, punched another six times, he picked up 6,000 likes on facebook. and then there are the marches through the stalls of immigrant merchants, where work patieperse demanded. they hold greeks-only food drives. this one ended with tear gas. but the efforts to win hearts and minds can be more subtle. sometimes hate takes a form of a

padlocked playground. >> for many in the neighborhood, the implication seems like that because immigrant used the playground, now, no children can use this playground. and then there was a message a lot less subtle, written in big patriotic white and blue to the entrance of this church, it says "all foreigners out of greece." [ speaking in a foreign language ] >> reporter: the party recently opened offices in germany and australia. and a website even popped up claiming to be the new york office of "golden dawn." the message is, they want to spread their message to greek americans. because as the film shows, this party sees blame for greece's wo

over s spreading far beyond its shores. >> not just jews in greece, but new york and chicago. >> they keep posting it like it is the jewish capital that has brought greece to this point. you know, i think every logical human being should worry about them. they already have 7,000 members in greece. they could get more. if you care about democracy, whether you're american, greek, israeli, german, whatever, any place on the planet. we should stop people like that. >> reporter: our many requests for an interview with "golden dawn" were rejected with an angry no. and soon after, that website for the new york chapter disappeared. but we'll keep a lookout and keep you posted. coming up next, some women give new meaning to the term "laying it all on the line."
