from new york city, this is "nightline" with dan abrams. good evening, and thank you for joining us. usher is one of the most famous musicians in the world. but to hisçó kids, he is just a dad. and after winning a legal battle with his ex-wife, tameka, last year, he got custody of his children, she is challenging that ruling, particularly after a scary accident at usher's home. and now she is taking the heat from many of usher's most devoted fans. i sat down with her in an exclusive interview from

everything to how they met and how she thinks his fame is involved. >> reporter: it was an accident that had america holding its breath. the 5-year-old child of the star, usher, nearly drowns in a pool. but what follows is a custody battle. now, his ex-wife, tameka, says she wants to set the record straight. >> i think the kids are not getting proper care. and i think the reason for it is, he is not there. >> reporter: talking for the first time to abc news about her 5-year-old son, the accusations, and the detailed efforts she is trying to do to get more time with her children she shares with her ex-husband. she says his massive success as an artist and tv personality often means he doesn't have time to care for their two young boys. >> he travels, i would say, 85%

of the time. >> reporter: how did things get so ugly? >> because he filed for full custody? >> reporter: when they first got divorce, the couple shared custody, but that all changed in 2011. >> he filed to take my children away, but i don't know what my fans think. but am i not supposed to fight? should i say oh, yeah, you can have them. they're not that cute anyway, they're my babies. >> reporter: it was not always like that. tameka said she met him when she was hired as a stylist for some of his music videos. that is some of her handiwork on "you don't have to call." they began dating in 2005. you loved him? >> oh, absolutely. >> reporter: and usher removed this song, called "papers", many

think that the lyrics are loosely based on their break-up. and now, his 5-year-old son nearly drowned in the swimming pool when his hand got caught in the drain. the boy's aunt dove in after him, as did the housekeeper. but they couldn't shake him free. two men passing by managed to help had, but he was not breathing. tameka described the heart-stopping moment when she got the call. >> you know, he doesn't call me regularly. when i saw his number come up, i jumped up. i thought i need to get this. >> reporter: usher was a mile and a half away at a recording studio and raced back to the house to see his son. tameka said it was the superstar who called. >> i was mad, nobody was watching him. why was my son there for nearly three minutes? what happened here?

what went wrong, you have all the staffers and assistants and maids and chefs and managers. and you know, all of these people that were around, why could nobody get my son out and why was there nobody in the pool with him. >> reporter: did you blame usher for that? >> blame is a hard work, because i don't blame him for the accident. i just was angry that it happened on his watch. >> reporter: for this mom, it was a horrifying case of deja-vu. her 11-year-old son with a different father died in a jet ski accident a year ago. did you think no, not again, please. >> it was like i relived it. like my brain went into all of those modes, thinking i said on the phone, i've had this call before. >> reporter: last week, tameka had to relive that moment yet again when the 911 tape was played in court. >> it really scared me that my kids were in a situation. and it just sounded like

complete chaos, when i heard the -- you know, the first time i heard the tape in its entirety was in court. and it really did hurt me. i'm very concerned about the different caregivers and the different maids and nannies and family members. you know, my kids are around a lot of different people in their father's care. this is almost like the twilight zone, to be in a situation, it is surreal. i have to pinch myself sometimes and say you really don't have your kids? it just doesn't even seem right. >> reporter: which is why she says just days after the near drowning, the couple was back in court. tameka's lawyers requested a temporary hearing, hoping to win custody of their two young sons. >> when the incident happened, my attorney filed an emergency motion so that when my son was released from the hospital he wasn't going to have to go back to the house where the incident happened. because based on our custody schedule, just like now, my son

was released into his father's care again. i deem that an emergency. >> may we approach, your honor? >> reporter: but a judge disagreed. usher had been granted custody at a prior hearing and the court refused to change that, despite his ex-wife's arguments that he is rarely home because of his schedule and performing. >> i think that wealthy men and men that are of status are winning these cases like -- they're winning them. but these are very busy men. that is why they're wealthy. >> reporter: do you think that he won the custody fight because he is rich, and because he is usher? >> i think that played a huge role. >> reporter: but there was more than just that working against tameka in court. you were accused of threatening him? of hitting him. spitting at his girlfriend? >> definitely. >> reporter: all true? >> all true. all true. >> reporter: should they be

relevant in connection with the custody case? >> i don't think they should be relevant. i mean, we went through a divorce. i was very hurt in that process. no, i'm not bitter, no, i'm not mad that he has moved on. but of course, the initial time i saw the girlfriend, she was brought to my son's house on my birthday. it was very uncomfortable. it was meant to push buttons. >> reporter: you took a psychological examination in connection with this. and the psychological case reported that you have a moderately psychological disorder. >> when it was time to read the results, his attorneys moved to have the cameras out. his attorneys moved to have the record sealed. i had narcissisit personality

traits. that is what that was. i think we all have a little that disorder, especially those of us in the limelight, but i don't think it is something that affects my parenting. >> reporter: so you think it is unfair to characterize you as having a sort of mental disorder? >> i know it is unfair. >> reporter: now, she gets her kids only ten days a month. do you think he hates you? >> no. >> reporter: do you hate him? >> absolutely not. he is the father of my children. i think he has good intentions for the children. i think he is a control freak, a bit. you know? i think that he is used to getting his way. >> reporter: after the last hearing, the two shared what seemed to be a tender moment. at the end of the last hearing. usher hugged you. how did you feel about that? >> i call that -- i think we coined that as a casket rub. i don't think it was a sincere gesture. >> reporter: what do you want from this? >> i would like to have my first

right of refusal, which mean that is when he is not present, the kids come home to their mom. they don't stay with a nanny and watch whatever show he is on. they come home to their mother. i had to see on instagram that my 4-year-old lost his first tooth. that is my baby. things that are like precious moments i am just missing them. >> reporter: tameka says she tries to remain positive, by joining kyle's world, a foundation she started in memory of her late son. do you think he is a good father? >> absolutely, i think he really loves my children. >> reporter: and despite everything, she tells me she is hopeful that she and her superstar ex will figure it out for those two little boys. do you feel powerless in this situation? i mean, you talk about how you love the kids and want the kids back with you, to have more time. and a court has said no. >> at times i feel powerless.

them. a feisty female fighter who is breaking barriers, as well as bo bones. abc enters the world of mixed martial arts, where you have to have a lot of guts, especially if you're a "she." >> rhonda rousey. >> reporter: rowdy rhonda rousey is no ordinary fighter. this is one of the most vicious sports in the world. mixed martial arts. where fighters get to punch, kick, and knock out their opponents. due to violence, it has been banned in some countries and even declared off limits to some women. do you buy into this, well, they shouldn't be doing this, they're not made up that way

genetically? >> i would think they go out and celebrate women in combat. why would you be able to support women in that but not this. >> reporter: but it is out of the ring where she attracts more attention, she is this month's maxim cover girl. over the years, she has shown she is not shy about speaking her mind. like when she talked about herself. >> i try to have as much sex as possible, because it raises the testosterone. >> reporter: i want to know how that is working for you? >> not fantastic, i jinxed myself. >> reporter: we spent time with rousey in las vegas, where she is shooting a reality tv show "the ultimate fighter". >> reporter: why would you do this? >> i think it is because of the way i was brought up.

my mom would take me to judo fights. >> reporter: what was it like? >> we were told you can always do what you want to do. you just have to be the best at it. >> reporter: but it was a long journey, rousey's father took his own life when she was 8 years old. >> it was hard, he was gone and we were alone. >> reporter: under a watchful eye under her mother, rousey used her on judo training, to cope with the loss of her dad. >> she was like did you want to do this? >> yes, i wanted to win the olympics. >> reporter: she became the first american to medal in judo, but she needed more and wanted to fight professionally. she not only became the first woman to fight with the ultimate fight championship, she was crowned the first woman fighter. but just because women should
