good thursday morning. the threat of more violence hangs over egypt, after hundreds of people were killed in yesterday's government assault. >> protesters fought back with rocks. even pushing this armored vehicle off a bridge. a symbol of the country's decent into violence. >> this is what the streets of cairo looked like. people walking around, looking at the damage. our coverage begins with abc's muhammad lila, who is in cairo. >> reporter: it's a bizarre scene this morning. cairo was one of the biggest cities in the world. and yet, it feels like a ghost town. basically looks like a battlefield. certainly still a lot of tension, despite the cleanup. one good thing is that it doesn't appear, so far, that there's been any major clashes yet today. that's the big concern. all of the people yesterday, who were clashing with police and the military, they've all gone

home. and we're going to wait to see what happens to the rest of the day. whether or not they decide to attack the military once again. >> all right. muhammad lila, thank you. the white house is closely watching the situation, as egypt, one of our most important allies in the volatile region. >> abc's tahman bradley continues our coverage from washington. >> reporter: egyptians are waking up to the quiet of an overnight curfew. the streets of cairo and alexandria were nearly deserted. hours earlier, chaos. the violence erupted when egypt's new military government used force to clear two encampments, occupied by supporters of ousted president mohamed morsi. teargas scattered crowds. then, bulldozers before police opened fire on the protesters. te jipgs government says more than 300 people were killed. most of them civilians. and nearly 3,000 were injured.

it was egypt's deadliest day, since the uprising that toppled hosni mubarak. some fired back with rocks. ordina ordinary citizens were caught in the violence. the situation, a nightmare for u.s. officials. >> the united states strongly condemns the use of violence against protesters in egypt. >> reporter: the obama administration has not labeled the military's decision to remove president morsi a coup. and so far, there's no sign the u.s. will cut the aid provided to the key middle east ally. secretary of state john kerry called the violence a serious blow to egypt's political reconciliation efforts and urged calm. >> this is a pivotal moment for all egyptians. the path towards violence leads only to greater instability, economic disaster and suffering. >> reporter: urging peace, egypt civilians interim vice president resigned, saying he cannot bear the responsibility for the bloodshed. john? >> tahman bradley in washington.

thank you. happening right now, firefighters are still struggling to control the stubborn wildfire racing through northeast utah. they're facing wind-driven flames that are twisting into tornado-like funnels. the fire is now 25% contained. hundreds of families were supposed to be allowed to return home last night. but officials say that's not going to happen until this evening, at the very earliest. federal investigators hoping to get the black boxes from the u.p.s. cargo plane that crashed into a field near the birmingham airport. the wreckage was scattered over a wide area. witnesses say they heard and flames before impact. >> it shook the house. like rattled the house. >> a big fireball. >> it was three of them. three pieces rolled back down the hill. >> investigators say neither the pilot or co-pilot signaled an emergency before the crash. a new round of peace talks between israel and palestinians has begun. it's the first time the two

sides have sat at the same table in over three years. chief negotiators were seen shaking hands. but there's no other information from inside that meeting. even the exact location was classified. negotiations are set to take place every few weeks in order to meet secretary of state john kerry's goal to -- of a deal within nine months. army private bradley manning has apologized saying he hurt the country by passing information to wikileaks. manning's sister testified, telling the court about his troubled childhood. two experts say manning's gender identity disorder contributed to his actions. and nsa leaker edward snowden has apparently had a conversation with his father who is still here in the u.s. the father and son chatted online, marking the first time they've had direct contact since snowden left the country. he says he plans to visit his son in russia as soon as he can get a visa. former illinois congressman

jesse jackson jr. has been sentenced to 30 months behind bars for misusing campaign funds. jackson's wife, who was the campaign manager, got a year in jail for filing false tax returns. because they have young children, she'll serve that sentence after jackson completes his. the military is about to begin offering benefits to same-sex spouses. the health care, housing and other benefits will be provided by september 3rd to same-sex spouses service members. personnel in a gay relationship that is stationed in a state that does not permit them to marry, will be allowed to take leave to travel to a state where they can marry legally. a new design for the $100 bill will be released in october. the bills failed an inspection by the federal reserve. too much ink was used. those bills will be destroyed. the hundred will contain the color blue and have a 3d security ribbon. >> i don't mind inky bills. >> let's go dumpster diving

outside of the mint. >> all right. time, now, for the weather across the nation. it will be soggy across the south through the entire weekend. the rain, today, will be focused on florida, georgia and alabama. severe weather is a threat in the texas panhandle. and a foggy start for the west coast. >> warmer than usual in boise, where temperatures will be close to 100. phoenix will be 107. highs around 80 from new york, d.c., chicago and detroit. they'll be in the mid-70s. the postal service making more adjustments. what you should know before you mail your next package. and new details in the kidnapping saga of hannah anderson. new details released overnight. and a major breakthrough that is said to lower men's risk of getting prostate cancer.

and welcome back. the cash-strapped u.s. postal service is making more changes to take on rivals like fedex. the agency is now offering free online tracking for priority mail shipments, free insurance and date-specific delivery. the moves come as the postal service is reeling from losses this year, totalling $3.9 billion. cisco systems is cutting 4,000 jobs. it's about 5% of the company's workforce. the job cuts come after weaker sales in japan, china and europe. apple's struggling stock is starting to show signs of life. surpassing the $500 share mark for the first time since january. the surge comes after investor carl icahn said he purchased a large chunk of the company's stock. car seat rules may be changing yet again. an amendment to next year's motor vehicle safety standards will require that car seats be secured by a seat belt and top tether rather than the lap system, if the combined weight

all right, now. a look at the morning road conditions. rain could slow travel on i-10, from new orleans to jacksonville. wind gusts and hail in the texas panhandle. some fog on i-5, from los angeles north. >> it's a good day for air travel with delays possible only in atlanta and new orleans. some disturbing, new details emerging this morning surrounding the kidnapping of southern california teenager, hannah anderson. >> we're learning more about hannah's dealings with the suspect before she was abducted. and what those horrifying final moments may have been like for her mother and brother. unsealed search warrants are painting a grisly scene at the home of the andersons' long-time friend, james dimaggio. they say hannah's mother and 8-year-old brother were tortured before killed and the house was set on fire. a crowbar and what appears to be blood found near christina anderson's head. even the family's dog, shot dead. earlier this week, hannah's father acknowledged it would be a tough road ahead.

>> as for my daughter, the healing process will be slow. she has been through a tremendous horrific ordeal. >> reporter: in her postings on the social networking website ask.fm, 16-year-old hannah said dimaggio, quote, deserved what he got, end quote. but this morning, the warrants are raising new questions about what happened. they say hannah and dimaggio exchanged about 13 phone calls at some point before she was kidnapped. but the exact time period is unclear. the documents also reveal that an unknown person picked hannah up from cheerleading practice the day she disappeared. about the same time, both her phone and dimaggio's were turned off. and the warrants describe day trips dimaggio took hannah on. most recently to malibu and hollywood. >> investigators are going to look for inconsistencies. in other words, you have a situation where two people are killed. they cleary are related to hannah. she is -- has a prior

relationship with him. what does that mean? >> unsealed search warrants are painting a grisly scene at the home of the andersons' long-time friend, dimaggio. they say hannah's mother and 8-year-old brother were tortured and killed and set on fire. and the crowbar where the blood was found close to christina anderson's head. >> now, authorities have not commented specifically on search warrants. but they have said all along that hannah was, indeed, held against her will. authorities in georgia are getting to the bottom of a kidnapping. that's a happy ending, thankfully. it came to an end after a high-speed car chase on the interstate. take a look at this. the woman behind the wheel driving up to 90 miles per hour with her friend's 8-month-old boy in the backseat. eventually she crashed the car and took off before being arrested. the boy's mother and police have no idea why she did it. >> i went inside and grabbed a lighter. i was going to take my friend to the store. and i come back outside. car's gone. >> we're not sure at this point what the motive is for her driving off with the child. >> the 8-month-old boy is fine. he's now safe at home with his mother. the female suspect has an arrest record that includes drug charges. she spent half of july in jail for a probation violation. a 58-year-old massachusetts woman has died after crashing her car through a fence and into a condo complex swimming pool. a good samaritan saw this crash and did manage to pull the woman from the car.

but the woman was pronounced dead at the hospital. neighbors say the woman had recently sold her condo there. she was planning to move to florida today. sad news about a former participant in abc's "the bachelor." 29-year-old gia allemand has died. she appeared on the show three years ago was the third runner-up. she was taken off life support yesterday at a hospital in new orleans, following a suicide attempt. she was found by her boyfriend, nba player, ryan anderson. he called her the most beautiful person he ever knew. and two stars of "the real housewives of new jersey," say they're not guilty of a host of financial fraud charges. joe and teresa giudice they entered their pleas in a brief court appearance yesterday. they're charged with 39 counts including conspiracy and fraud. a trial date in early october was set. but that could be pushed back into next year because of the complexity of this case. a drug typically used to treat male pattern baldness, also seems to help prevent

prostate cancer. a long-term federal study found middle-aged men who took propecia and proscar reduced their risk of prostate cancer by about 33%. there's over 200,000 cases of prostate cancer per year in the united states alone. more than 1 billion people use facebook to chat, comment and like their friends' statuses. but a new university of michigan study suggests that all this networking may not be making us as happy as we might think. they found the more time you spend on facebook, the less likely you are to feel happy. comparing the site to a modern-day keeping up with the joneses. with users experiencing profile envy. >> profile envy? does that mean you have a cooler site than me? >> yes. >> i'm jealous. >> you post more pictures. you have a better life than i do. keeping up with the joneses. another dramatic win in los angeles after 12 innings. >> here's stan and neil at espn with the highlights. >> he's stan verrett. i'm neil everett. we're in los angeles on the "sportscenter" set. >> you're really a sincere fella. the dodgers have been unstoppable lately.

called 9-1-1. the girl told the dispatcher her parents were fighting and her father had a knife and was threatening to kill her mother. the dispatcher could hear violent yelling and sent several officers to the apartment. >> officers arrived on the scene and made entry into the apartment and they were met immediately by a male with a knife and the male subject threatened the officers forcing an officer to discharge. the subject was struck transported to a hospital and was pronounced deceased. >> there were two girls in the apartment and the mother. the ages are in the 10 to 12-year-old range and the police department is interviewing the family at police station. the man who was killed was 37 years old.
