neither rain, sleet, gloom of night or a major traffic accident will stop the post office from delivering your mail. >> mail will eventually get there in spite of an accident in alameda county. matt, this is taking hours to clear. >> yeah. it's a big mess. a lot of traffic. right now you can see there are two lanes northbound of 680 open to traffic. the trailer is in the middle of

the two far right lanes. it was just offloaded and it's close to be off-righted and towed bringing relief to drivers after a long commute. the postal service left a huge mess on 680 this morning. it ended up on its side and left all three lanes blocked. this delivery was headed to east bay post offices after being sorted at a san jose processing center. you can see what kept this from being a bigger mess. 41 holders were keeping things in place. >> aside from the mail that actually got impacted or crushed by the flow of the 60,000 pounds, the mail was in tact. it did not scatter all over the

roadway. >> reporter: the chp moved the truck so it was only blocking two lanes but towing it wasn't that simple. if the trailer was uprighted, it would create even a bigger mess. because the privacy and identity theft concerns, they waited until the postal service arrived to unload the mail. that didn't happen for four hours. but as for the delivery -- >> people will get their mail? >> they will. >> reporter: postal officials expect the sorting process to be about a day before it's sent back out to the east bay. as for the driver, he appears to be okay. matt keller, abc news. crews are working on the eastbound span of the bridge. in two weeks, the entire bridge will close for five days so they can have the new span ready on

september 3rd. it's going to affect two weekdays, the thursday and friday before the holiday weekend. people who rely on the bridge to get to work are making alternative plans. >> actually, i need to use san mateo bridge. i used to use that one every day, too. >> the toll bridge oversight committee voted to make a temporary fix to the bolt problems. steel plates will be put in place to prevent movement during an earthquake. and we're now 18 days until the opening of the new bay bridge. stay with abc 7 news for coverage and the big opening on september 3rd. the sex offender who is a person of interest in the death of an oakland woman made a brief court appearance. amy, was this a related charge? >> reporter: that's right, kristen, but we learned today that randy was not allowed to

have any contact with sandra coke. elana is being held for a parole violation and the judge decided this morning to continue to hold him in jail and decided not to set bail. today, we learned what police believe he did to violate his parole. >> well, the judge said that there were various terms and conditions of parole that he's accused of violating. and one of them was having contact with sandra coke. another was not charging his gps. a third one was resisting arrest. >> reporter: and a fourth accusation was absconding parole. what is missing is the why. police can't tell us why he wasn't allowed to have contact with her. there is a history there. we just don't know what it is yet. police say they can't say. coke's body was found in a park a week ago. police say she was last seen with elana, a man with a violent criminal history.

photographer. just before midnight on 100 avenue near san leandro street east of the airport, a woman -- sorry. these are not the pictures. a woman was found shot to death inside a car. a man was also shot and taken to the hospital. the police have not released the woman's name. they are looking for any leads on a suspect and motive. funeral services are under way this morning for 1-year-old drew jackson and his father, 20-year-old andrew thomas of fresno. both were gunned down in oakland last week. they were visiting family at a home on gorley avenue when someone shot through a bedroom avenue just before 3:00 a.m. on august 7th. police have made no arrests. the funeral is happening on international boulevard. valley police are adding extra patrols in one neighborhood after reports of a suspicious driver harassing young girls. the latest incident happened on wednesday. police say a man in a plaque car approached the 15-year-old girl walking near sycamore avenue. he asked her for directions and

commented on her looks. the girl walked away and the driver in his 20s or 30s drove off. another teen told police the same thing happened to her. palo alto high school is sending out a serious warning to students. no more streaking on campus. two students ran naked yesterday on the first day of school. this is a prank that's usually seen at the end of a school year. the principal has sent a warning letter to students and parents saying streakers could face a suspension and may have to meet with a police officer. we're following developing news in egypt. more death and destruction. katie marzullo is joining us. katie? >> reporter: it is after dark there now. some reports are that at least 37 people have been killed today. reuters puts the number to closer to 50. it's not just in cairo but throughout egypt. deadly violence again in egypt.

it began after friday prayers. tens of thousands of people poured out of mosques and marched on the streets of cairo. the muslim brotherhood calls today friday of anger and others a day of rage. >> i'm afraid for my life and my religion and i'm afraid for my country. i don't afraid for my life. >> reporter: the interior minister authorizing the use of deadly force on demonstrators. it came to that. you can see tear gas canisters flying through the air, bullets, too. the protests show defiance, a response to wednesday's horrific violence. more than 600 people were killed in that one day. >> you can't kill your own people and get away with it. >> reporter: the white house says president obama was briefed

on the violence in egypt today by a national security adviser susan rice who is traveling with him. president obama is on vacation in martha's vineyard. he's scheduled to return to the white house on sunday. officials are giving more details for the planned implosion of a building on the east bay campus. more than 1100 debt been set up. they want to keep the dust to the minimum. geologists are using the implosion as an opportunity to study the impact. so they have placed 600 sensors around the east bay to measure the movement. if you would like to see the implosion as it happens, we will be streaming it live for you on abc7news.com at 9:00 a.m. still to come, why layoffs

exploratorium is causing employee's jobs. the visitors have been much less than expected. happening now, angry residents are gifving officials an earful over tour buses. they are saying that loads of private buses that take tours to the famous alamo square are ruining their serene neighborhood, there are snarled traffic and blocked driveways just so tourists can get pictures of the famous victorians there. the issue has been going on for years and bus routes were rerouted and they are still upset and want big buses out of the area entirely. in the next hour there is the opening of the latham square. it's located on telegraph avenue between broadway and 16th street, a block away from city

happening now, the landlord who made a name for himself for building a mountain on the top of his roof of his apartment building in china has started taking it down.

crews started dismantling the private mountain peak this morning. chinese officials gave him 15 days to take down a project he took six years building. the property owner hauled rocks, trees, and bushes to the top of his 26-floor apartment in beijing. government officials called his creation outrageously illegal and cracked down on it after people complained that the landlord was getting special treatment. >> he had the money to do it. >> yeah. >> it's coming down now. bye-bye. >> f >>. friday is here. what do we have in store? >> good morning, everybody. let's start with -- well, let me go over here and see if i can get the computer started correctly. for some reason it didn't start right. all right. what you're looking at, i guess, would be the seven-day forecast. now we're showing a nice shot. this is a -- going to work.

e. there we go. showing the visibilities and what we're looking at our visibilities up from this morning. all of the fog is gone. we have low clouds around the coast and the visibility definitely different than it was during the morning commute. all right. we have winds over the bay and also the delta developing this afternoon. if you're heading out there, watch out for one southwest 15 to 20 knots. out over the notion, it's going to be northwest 15 to 25 knots. monterey, 13, 15 miles per hour. fairfield, 12. everybody else, less than 10 miles per hour. expect it to pick up a little bit this afternoon. here's a look at the cloud cover. you can definitely see what is going on along the coast while everybody is enjoying a whole lot of sunshine. you can see it reflected in the temperatures. concord, san ramon, 86. 75 in santa rosa. oakland, san carlos, and half moon bay back into the 60s. in fact, this is the way it

looks in san jose right now. look at all of that beautiful sunshine. it's going to be slightly cooler today even with sunny conditions. cloudy tonight, it won't be quite as humid. the temperatures will drop to the morning 60s. we have the warm spike on sunday and then we'll follow that with a chance of a stray shower or two on monday and tuesday. for today, look at that. 80 in san jose, mid-to upper 80s. los gatos, gilroy. as far as the peninsula, 72 in los altos. low to mid-70s in the coast. downtown san francisco, 78. low to mid-80s throughout wine country. 80 in castro valley. pretty nice weather along the east bay shore. with the extra humidity, it may be a little uncomfortable in the valleys, up to 90 address. indians are in town to take on
