caused the costa county to cut seven engine districts. the district wants the community to give the input on the best way to provide protection. the first of three will be held tonight at 6:30 at the pittsburg community library on power avenue. >> of course, we'll be following the high fire danger all morning long. red flag warnings, mike is keeping track of that. and leyla joins us with a check on the traffic. >> reporter: all right. we don't have any crashes to speak of, so that's the good news. hopefully, we won't have any car fires because of the dry conditions. what we do have, though, good morning, everyone, construction in the east bay, traveling along in the eastbound direction on 580 between north slim road and greenville. you will be seeing crews out there working on drainage, and that is causing a little bit of a bottleneck, as you can see slowing building in the eastbound direction. westbound direction nice and clear. we are at top speeds as you make it out of tracey and into dublin, and as you continue into castro valley. so not a problem there. going outside live to look at this, the bay bridge toll plaza, where i saw a few cars loading up in the cash-paying lane, as

you can see on the right-hand side of the screen. the rest of the drive is moving along fine. we'll have a few lanes blocked westbound until 5:00 at the cantilever section till the end of the tunnel. >> thank you very much. 4:31. breaking news out of fresno county. three people killed, two others injured in an accident involving a freight train. it happened in the town of malaga south of fresno around 2:00 this morning. we're told the victims were on the track when the train came through. three were killed and two others taken to the hospital. no word on where they were from or where they were heading. we'll bring you any updates as soon as we get it. happening today, the highway patrol will release details of the months' long investigation into the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. that fire killed five women back in may. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live with a preview. matt? >> reporter: it's taken investigators three months to come to the conclusion on what caused a limo fire that kimmed

five women here on the san mateo bridge. four others survived by crawling out of a narrow opening of the driver's compartment. abc 7 news reported friday no criminal charges are expected. sources with knowledge of the chp probe told us the air springs in the rear of the limo inflated societying off a domino effect. >> these are air springs. they're not even air shocks. they're air springs. in other words, they carry the weight of the car. so now, when one of them has a rupture on it, the whole car drops down to basically almost all of the tires. so the car with the weight, it bounced down too hard and ended up hitting the gas tank, which is right in the spot here. it might have hit the gas tank and then you see when it hit the ground, it will create a spark. >> reporter: sources told abc 7 news the chp decided at the end of july.

there was no evidence to press criminal charges against the driver, orville brown, or the owner of the limousine company, but then orville brown's estranged wife said the two argued on their cell phone shortly before the fire, and he was playing music too loudly and not paying attention. sources told abc 7 news that chp reviewed his cell phone records and determined he had not been on the phone with his wife and no other evidence to charge him criminally. chp's conclusion is that the tragic accident was the result of a catastrophic mechanical failure. now, investigators are expected to release those details and also the recordings of some of the 911 calls later today at the redwood city chp headquarters. reporting live in foster city, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you, matt. happening today, the man accused of murdering four women decades ago is set to continue his closing arguments. he is acting as his own attorney. his closing arguments began friday and lasted all day. when he's done, prosecutors will present their rebuttal, then the

jury will begin deliberations. the women all had the same initials for their first and last name. a teenager facing murder charges after hitting two bicyclists in dublin in june is expected to enter a plea. the teen hit and killed a 58-year-old woman. her husband was also hit, but survived. police initially arrested 18-year-old cody hall for manslaughter but prosecutors upgraded the charge to murder after hall boasted about speeding on twitter. new this morning, olympian and double amputee oscar pistorius has been indicted on a premeditated murder charge in the valentine's day slaying of his girlfriend. pistorius stood in the dark courtroom before the hearing began in south africa this morning. he wiped away tears and held hands with his brother and sister. the judge set a trial date for next march. pistorius said he shot steenkamp by mistake thinking she was an intruder. today would have been the model's 30th birthday. prosecutors say he killed her following an argument. this morning, a 25-year-old

man is in the hospital in serious condition after falling off a cliff in halfmoon bay. the fall happened near the 18th hole on the ocean course of the halfmoon bay golf course. it's near the ritz carlton hotel. this is a photo of the rescuers at the scene. there are signs there posted about unstable ground. fire officials aren't sure why the man fell. >> the cliff itself was pretty much vertical. it was a fall straight from the top all the way to the bottom. >> and can you elaborate on his injuries? >> just they were major injuries. our paramedics were down there with the victims. >> he was airlifted to stanford hospital. officials aren't sure if he was a hotel guest but confirmed he is not from the area. 4:35 now. oakland city leaders are calling on the public this morning to help end the violence that's gripping parts of the city. 12 people were shot, three of them fatally in less than 24 hours this weekend. the trouble began when two people were shot to death and two others were seriously

wounded on 105th avenue on friday night. another man was shot saturday morning, followed hours later by gunfire on telegraph avenue near downtown that sent four people to the hospital. another was wounded in a shooting on saturday night. 30 minutes later, a woman died and a man was wounded in another shooting. this car crashed at macarthur and 73rd during that shooting. a 4-year-old child was cut by shattered glass from the gunfire. san francisco police are warning drivers that students in public schools are heading back to class. police are beefing up patrol near schools today. they will be targeting drivers who violate the 15-mile-an-hour speed limit for school zones. traffic enforcement officers will focus on elementary schools in the city. the extra patrols will be operating between 7:00 and 9:00 in the morning and 1:30 and 3:30 in the afternoon. it's 4:36. can't emphasize enough the high fire danger throughout this morning, mike. >> yeah. it's going to continue all the way through about 3:00 wednesday morning. it will taper rapidly wednesday,

but until then, we've got about 48 hours of really interesting weather for us this time of the year. most of us are pretty clear this morning. a little bit of fog around halfmoon bay, three quarter, but the rest of us, hardly any clouds out there now, but we'll keep an eye on it. because at any time we could spark one of the thunderstorms. the best chance probably will be during the afternoon, evening hours, and then over the ocean tonight. we'll talk more about that in the big weather. let's talk about temperatures. mid to upper 50s from half moon bay, san francisco, santa rosa. if you had the windows open last night through this morning, you know it's muggy out there. temperatures didn't cool off much. san jose, 69. right now, mountain view 68. 64 in san ramon, 74 in antioch. the 24-hour temperature change, you can see everybody warmer, up 5 degrees in novado. you thought yesterday was warm, today will be the same. we'll get through 7:00. just muggy and mild. the day planner for the next 12 hours, you can see the warm

sunshine pushes us into the mid-60s at the coast by noon, low 70s at the bay, low 80s inland. we could see some storms pop, around 4:00, 66. temperatures will stay up during the evening hours thanks to the breezes and also the humidity. let's turn it over to traffic. here's leyla. >> all right. so far, it's pretty quiet out there. we do have construction to get the work week going as we take you into the east bay along the nimitz, southbound direction along 98th and davis street. we'll have a few lanes blocked off. that will last until 5:00. cones will be picked up shortly, in the next 20 minutes or so. and we are looking at a little bit of a delay in the northbound direction. as you can see, as you pass right by the construction site, continuing in the northbound direction, the closer you get to the maze, you see a bottleneck and buildup of traffic there. looking toward the drive-time track, westbound from tracy into castro valley, over 30 minutes. not too bad, 101 northbound to the san jose airport, 13 minutes. and 280 northbound from highway

4:42. fire officials are hopeful they'll soon get an upperhand on a raging wildfire burning in central idaho. this is new video we got in from overnight showing the beaver creek fire, which has burned more than 100,000 acres. right now, the fire is about 9% contained, but fire officials say cloud cover yesterday helped keep the flames from spreading. about 2,300 homes have been evacuated. more than 1,200 firefighters and 19 aircraft are battling this fire, which started with a lightning strike on august 17th -- august 7th, rather. famed musician lester chambers plans to sue the city

of hayward after he was attacked while performing on stage. this video from fuse news captured the attack during a blues festival last month. watch as this woman jumping on stage, you see there, moments after chambers dedicated a song to the family of trayvon martin. potter now faces elderly elder abuse and assault charges. chambers and his attorney want hate crimes added. helmet camera video shot at the asiana crash at sfo is stirring up controversy. the video has been instrumental in the investigation of a young passenger run over by a piece of fire equipment. but now san francisco fire officials say no more cameras. we have the details. >> reporter: the. -team uncovered details about how ye mengyuan died. she was obscured by fire retardant foam when 37 rolled onto the scene and hit her. video shot by a firefighter wearing a helmet-mounted camera

has been instrumental in the ongoing investigation, but the chief now says that video was a violation of department policy. >> just because we're glad to have that video footage doesn't change the fact that our policy is that nobody is allowed to videotape anything at any time without the permission of the fire chief. >> reporter: fire chief joanne hayes-white says the policy is meant to protect the privacy of patients and fire crew members. the san francisco chronicle published pictures from the helmet cam worn by battalion chief mark johnson. >> they're not supposed to have recording devices or use them at this time in conjunction with our policy that's been in place since 2009. >> reporter: battalion chief johnson commanded the asiana crash response. he's been interviewed about the violation of policy but no disciplinary action has been taken. yet. fellow battalion chief kevin smith is defending johnson, saying the policy was initially meant to restrict recordings inside firehouses.

>> there is no existing policy that permits individuals from wearing helmet cams and videotaping incidents outside of the firehouse. >> reporter: he's disappointed, because he says helmet cam video is a great teaching tool. abc 7 news. san mateo county sheriff's deputies are warning about a mountain lion sighting. sheriff deputies got report of a mountain lion roaming in a neighborhood near redwood city early yesterday morning. it was spotted in the emerald hills neighborhood in the area of lakeview way. residents are being advised not to approach any mountain lion they may come across. sir paul mccartney wants the chance to perform some of his silly love songs at candlestick park before the stadium is demolished. the mayor said mccartney floated the idea to him the weekend before last. mccartney has history at the stick. it's where the beatles performed the last live concert in 1966. mccartney said that would bring things full circle.

the beatles' last concert at candlestick 47 years ago, and now candlestick's last concert featuring a former beatle. it is 15 before the hour. and time to take a check on our weather. abc 7 news meteorologist mike nicco is here with the latest. mike this. >> all right. thank you very much, ama. nice to see you this morning. good morning, eric. good morning, everybody. all right. let's look at live doppler hd and throw some of the cloud cover on here. you can see the cloud cover is few and far between. we are getting a few radar returns, some very small ones that are now starting to move through the western sections, or the east bay hills, if you will, the western sections of contra costa and alameda counties, and this is sliding off to the west. it's not much. over the last hour, definitely something to keep an eye on. i don't think anything is falling from it, nor is it reaching the ground. it does give an indication of how much moisture is in the air. we need a trigger mechanism to set it off. that's what will come in later on with the heating and the winds and the area of low pressure that's been spinning. remember the one that brought us

cool weather saturday, and then reversed sunday? it's coming back at us. that's what's going to help trigger it. let's talk about temperatures first. mid to upper 80s in the south bay. morgan hill, gilroy, low to mid-90s for you. 74 in santa cruz. all right. temperatures from redwood city southward, low to mid-80s. san mateo, mid to upper 70s. mid-06s along the coast, near 70 downtown, 74 in south san francisco. as you head up through the north bay, temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. head back down toward sausalito, 76. along the coast, 70, and over towards the east bay, temperatures in the upper 70s, low 80s. castro valley, union city, newark, freemont, mid-80s for you, and our warmest weather by far, into the east bay valleys. 88 in san ramon. everybody else in the low to mid-90s, possibly 97 in brentwood. remember with the extra humidity in the air that we're not used to, it's going to feel cooler -- or a little warmer than that. all right.

cool on the mind. pulled up there, but it won't be cool tonight. like you step out this morning, temperatures in the low to upper 60s. the area of low pressure spinning down to the south. most of the moisture will stay to our east. but every once in a while, stray shower or two will come our way, and that will happen not only today but also tomorrow through wednesday morning. that's why we have the fire danger till 3:00 wednesday morning. then, that thing, that low rapidly moves off to the east. our fire threat ends as our thunderstorms diminish. and temperatures will cool just a little bit as we head towards friday, saturday, and sunday. we'll try to get more typical weather back in the forecast. have a great day. here's leyla. >> it's a little bit busy in solano county. a few issues going on out here. as we take you first into vacaville where we have a stalled big rig. off to the shoulder, westbound side of 80 at 505. however, a large tire is resting in one of the lanes and that's causing some slowing there on the southbound side of 505.

it looks like 80 moving well there as you make it westbound into vacaville. heading down toward the junction, eastbound side of 88, red top road, this is where we also have an issue. it is a branch that is in lanes, and that is causing a little bit of slowing as well, as you come in the eastbound direction, westbound also seeing a little spot of slowing. and a little farther to the south, in vallejo, eastbound side of 80, at tennessee street, and that's where we have a stalled vehicle. it looks like clear conditions for the most part. but we do have a lane blocked here and there. not too shabby. taking it outside, looking at san jose and seeing what's happening there. quite a few cars making their way away from 80 over toward san jose airport, but moving along at top speeds. >> thank you. diplomats from the european union are meeting in brussels to discuss responses in egypt. -fñ warning egyptian authorities that the people's calls for fundamental rights cannot be disregarded. 900 people died in violent clashes since last wednesday. they say security forces fired

tear gas at a prison truck sunday in an attempt to free a badly beaten police officer from rioting detainees. it was transferring captured members of the muslim brotherhood. 36 prisoners were killed. egypt's army leader vows the military will not tolerate further violence. military drills under way this morning in south korea involving u.s. forces are drawing protests. the protesters say the drills are only making tensions between north and south korea worse. the north says the annual drills are a rehearsal for an invasion. back here in california, san diego mayor bob filner is set to return to work today after undergoing behavior therapy. his return comes as a recall drive gets under way. filner is accused of harassment by more than a dozen women. the 70-year-old former congressman has ignored numerous calls to resign. volunteers armed with petitions fanned out across the city hoping to collect the 102,000 signatures needed to put the recall on the ballot. coming up, a warning to parents. what researchers say is causing

4:53. welcome back. a new beginning for the portion of antioch park ruined by arsonists. two teenagers are being charged with the fire at a top lot parkment community members came together and raised thousands of dollars to rebuild the park. "the contra costa times" said work is set to start this week. crews hope to have it finished by early september. a new app being released today could help drivers fine the best parking in san francisco. parkme.com offers realtime parking information to find the closest and cheapest parking in san francisco. the city has 290 parking garages and lots with about 100,000 spaces. there are also more than 29,000 metered spaces on the streets. parkme.com says it can show the average cost of parking, fines

won't be a record high, but 82, humidity still uncomfortable. good morning, leyla. >> good morning, mike. and still very clear conditions, although we were seeing some busy things going on in solano county. it looks like that's cleared up. we do have one stalled big rig eastbound side of 80 at 505, and that has one lane blocked. we do have a bit of construction to get you going on this monday morning. if you're heading into the east bay, eastbound side of 580, to greenville, we have a few lanes blocked off. that will last until 11:00 this morning. so you are going to be seeing construction crews for several more hours heading into westbound direction, already starting to build there over the altamonte pass into tracy. so bumper to bumper before you get into vasco and then loosens up from there. as we go outside, looking at walnut creek. you can see 680 is moving along well there. coming up to the 24 junction, that's where we're starting to see some traffic building up. it looks like everyone is making it in the southbound direction pretty well. eric, ama? >> leyla, thank you. 4:55 now.

doctors at u.c. davis may have found a link between bpa and asthma. monkeys exposed to bpa showed changes in their lungs. the findings add more evidence to the effects of the chemical when it comes to hormonal systems and fetal development. many manufacturers have voluntarily taken b.p. out of the plastics used in baby bottles and sippy cups but still used in many plastic bottles and cash register receipts. the warnings about tanning beds and cancer apparently aren't having much effect. if you're younger than 25, indoor tanning can increase nonmelanoma skin cancer risk up to 142%. a new report is finding that many young adults are still tanning, including nonhispanic white female high school students. 2,000 people were surveyed. nearly one in three used indoor tanning at least ten times the previous year. one in four young adults used indoor tanning 15% said they did so frequently. a new study suggests more

children and young adults are now nearsighted because of smartphones. the study by british researchers say the constant connection is damaging eyesight. one problem is most people hold the phones 8 inches away from their faces to read. magazines or newspapers are held an average of 16 inches away. another problem with smartphones is how frequently we use them. researchers say there's been a 35% increase in nearsightedness since smartphones launched in 1997. it has already been a rough fire season, and it could be getting much worse. next at 5:00 a.m., the fire warning going out to all of us this morning. also, speaking out. what the man considered a person of interest in the murder of an oakland woman is revealing about their relationship. and here we go again. the new possibility of a transit strike facing east bay commuters this morning. stay with us. we're coming right back.
