5:00 am
good morning. 5:00 a.m. on this monday. and we welcome you, the alarm clock went off much too early today. >> thank you. i'm glad to be here. kristen sze is off. >> mike nicco is here with a look at the forecast which includes fire dangers. >> yes. why don't you get ama some coffee -- yeah, never mind. we do have a high fire danger, but not right now. we're looking at a few radar returns, maybe some sprinkles heading towards berkeley. they're so small. light green. probably not making the ground. it's probably the radar hitting more in the way of clouds coming through, as we're keeping the humidity pumped up, and the threat of thunderstorms. yeah, definitely. checking out the humidity. most of us from 68% at fairfield to 100% half moon bay.
5:01 am
that's why we don't have the high fire danger now. it's too humid. we don't have thunderstorms. and even if we did, look at the winds. they're calm to about 8 miles per hour. so anything that did develop would not get out of hand. bay shore, the coast, those are the areas not in where you see the red, not in this high fire danger. now, this is now all the way through 3:00 wednesday morning. ama? >> all right, thank you so much, eric. >> all right. happening now, temperatures are rising, and as mike mentioned, so is the fire danger, most of the bay area. he told you about the red flag warning. we're all being asked to be cautious. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with more on this. amy? >> reporter: eric, they're gearing up for fire season at the cal fire stations like this one because of the dry conditions. but, also, because of the threat of dry lightning. they've even brought in firefighters from other parts of the state. they have noticed the dry conditions, that they are really paying close attention to the predictions of dry lightning.
5:02 am
the forecast is calling for thunderstorms in the bay area anytime between now and tomorrow morning. these storms aren't expected to produce rain, but could create lightning strikes. and that, along with these dry conditions, is a nightmare for firefighters. >> lightning doesn't just land near the side of the road. it's out in the middle of nowhere. we either have to hike into it, we have to fly into it, use air resources to get to it. >> reporter: fires are already raging outside of the bay area, in butte county, more than 400 structures are threatened by a wildfire and hundreds of people have had to evacuate. that one is 45% contained. in the tahoe national forest, fire officials are dealing with a fire that's burned almost 14,000 acres. that one's 49% contained. there is a red flag warning in effect for inland parts of the bay area, and fire crews say if you combine the dry conditions and the lightning strike, that could cause serious problems.
5:03 am
live in sunol, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you so much. 5:03. time for a traffic check. it's early, but problems can occur. >> yeah, they most certainly can. so far, a nice quiet start to our work week. we do have some slowing that's starting to build in certain areas, certainly over the altamonte pass. but not so much on highway 4 as we take you out of antioch and into concorde. we will see some building up on this map, and that indicates volume. but really, you're at 68, so i wouldn't complain. we're also looking at a bit of green on this map. that indicates where some drizzle could be affecting your commute. looking on the east bay southbound 880 between 98th avenue and davis street, a construction project here. it looks like everything has been picked up so far. so everything is now moving along at top speeds once again. construction crews have left. a quick look at the mass transit where everything is running on time. the golden gate bridge, not too bad. ama, eric? >> thank you. three months after a

horrific limo fire, the chp is set today to release the findings of its investigation. five women died when they couldn't get out of the limo. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live near the san mateo bridge this morning with what we may learn today. matt? >> reporter: yeah, ama, investigators are expected to release details on their investigation into the limo fire that happened here on the san mateo bridge. and they're also expected to release some of the recordings of the 911 calls made on that night, may 4. now, abc 7 news reporter vic lee reported friday the chp's conclusion is that the tragic accident was the result of a catastrophic mechanical failure. he says sources with knowledge of the chp probe told him the air springs, called balloons, in the rear of the limo somehow deflated, setting off a domino effect that led to the fire that killed five women on may 4th. sources also told abc 7 news the chp decided at the end of july there was no evidence to press criminal charges against the driver, orville brown, or the owner of the limousine company. but then brown's estranged wife
5:05 am
said publicly the two argued on their cell phone shortly before the fire as he was driving and was playing music too loudly and not paying attention. sources told abc 7 news the chp reviewed his cell phone records and determined he had not been on the phone with his wife during the fire and no other evidence to charge him criminally. investigators from several different agencies, including the district attorney's office, and also the foster city fire department, are expected to release details on their investigation later today at the redwood city chp offices. that's supposed to happen at 1:00 this afternoon. reporting live in foster city, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. 5:05 now. the family of the oakland woman found dead in vacaville is responding to new claims by a person of interest in the case. as we first reported on satur y saturday, randy alana gave a jailhouse interview to "the bay area news group." in the interview, he said he and sandra coke were in a relationship and talking about getting married. now sandra coke's sister is
5:06 am
denying that claim. tanya coke said he was the last person seen with my sister but claims he had nothing to do with her disappearance and killing. why would we or anyone else believe what he has to say? authorities say alana was with coke the night she vanished but they are not calling him a suspect. alana claims he is innocent. a former elementary schoolteacher is facing more than 100 counts of child molestation charges and is set to appear in court today. 45-year-old joseph martin will appear for a preliminary hearing on 109 sexual abuse charges involving 13 former students. he has pleaded not guilty. martin taught 4th and 5th grade at woodside elementary school. he remains in jail on $10 million bail. bay area commuters could be on the verge of another mass transit strike. by a 2-to-1 margin, workers voted down a deal that would have given them a nearly 10% raise and improved health and safety conditions. negotiators reached the deal with management 12 days ago, an hour before they were set to go on strike. union officials say the

5:09 am
except petaluma and half moon bay. upper 50s. look at the 60s. low to mid-60s, american canyon, san leandro, palo alto, santa clara, saratoga, pleasanton, upper 60s around walnut creek. 72 in pittsburg and 71 in tracy now. the day planner for today, the next 12 hour, mild and muggy this morning with temperatures in the 60s. we should be in the 50s with cloud cover. warm sunshine by noon. just about everywhere. even the coast. 66. eh, it's warm for you, i guess. 72 and 84 elsewhere. and then, notice by 4:00 into the 7:00 hour, that's when we'll keep an eye on live doppler hd and you'll also have spencer and sandy here to show you where the storms are, the slight chance developing as we get near 80 inland, near 90 inland, 80 around the bay and mid-60s at the coast. the chance continues tuesday. it tapers wednesday afternoon, and then thursday, a quieter, more normal pattern back into the forecast. a look at the morning commute. good morning, leyla. >> good morning, mike. pretty quiet so far.
5:10 am
and that's exactly what we like to hear. we did have a couple of earlier construction projects. those have wrapped up. what we do have are clear conditions across most of our freeways. 580, though, is building. 680 southbound from walnut creek into dublin, looking at 14 minutes. if you're heading along southbound 101 from santa rosa into san francisco, that is 48 minutes. and highway 17 coming through the santa cruz mountains from highway 1 to loss garros, 24 minutes. the drive along westbound 80 through berkley into emeryville up to the maze, that's just a five-minute commute. and once you get to the bay bridge tolls, that's still moving along at top speeds, and the lights not on yet. a few cars loading up in the cash-paying lanes. looking at san jose, 280 from 17, so as you can see, the drive out towards cupertino, quiet southbound side even quieter. >> all right. thank you, leyla. from high tech to high fashion, yahoo!'s marissa mayer

fashion never is, is it? >> no, it never is. >> i'm thinking maybe you two could trade shoes -- >> i'd on be with that. he probably would not. >> no? well, i have big feet. 5:18. time for a look at the weather forecast. here's mike. >> yeah, sorry, i got side tracked. >> yes, you did. >> let's show you what's going on outside, maybe an umbrella fashion statement. probably not needed for most of us, but still the threat of thunderstorms. i think the think you need to be aware of is the high fire danger that will hang around now through 3:00 wednesday morning. live doppler hd is quiet, other than the few radar returns moving right over belvedere, tiburon, up towards san rafael, and heading out towards iner haveness, and heading off towards the west. it's going backwards, east to west, instead of west to east. haven't heard of anything falling out of them. just ones you know they were there, in case they did blow up when they hit the water. the most unstable part of the

atmosphere will be probably over the water. that'll be our best chance of thunderstorms. a lot like tonight. this is the way it looks from the tower. a little bit of fog along the coast, pushing across san francisco. it's running into the wind that's coming in from the west. so it's having a hard time doing it. don't expect much in the way of marine layer fog this morning. warm today. a chance of thunderstorms. high fire danger. and this is all through wednesday morning. by wednesday afternoon, it finally tapers and we'll try to get back to more normal type of summer. all right. temperatures in the low to mid-90s. 74 today in santa cruz. mid to upper 80s for most of the south bay with san jose about 87 degrees. let's talk temperatures. a quite of bit of microclimates on the peninsula. to the south, 86 in redwood city, and 80 at menlo park. and mid-60s along the coast. low to mid-70s downtown, south san francisco, sausalito. santa rosa getting near 90. we'll be near 70 in sunset beach, and heading towards the

east bay shore and most of us in the upper 80s -- i should say upper 70s to low 80s. we could hit 84 in union city, 85 in freemont and newark. 75 richmond. upper 80s to mid-90s. so here's what's happening in the area of low pressure, sliding to the south. it will keep most of us muggy tonight, low to mid-60s. because it's spinning down to the south, it's tapping into the monsoon moisture. most of the thunderstorms will be in the high country many but from today all the way through wednesday morning, a stray shower may pop at any time, and with these being elevated, and they call them elevated convection, the lightning will make it to the ground, but the rain won't. and that's why we have the high fire danger. here's leyla with your traffic update. >> all right. and we do have a report of a stalled big rig on the eastbound side of 580 heading into pleasanton. right at santa rita road. it was causing a little bit of a delay, but it may have been pushed to the shoulder. the last we heard, it was blocking one lane. certainly in the westbound direction, that is where you really are feeling the pinch out of tracy and over to the
5:21 am
altamonte pass. so as you can see, the traffic is starting before 205, and as you make the push in the westbound direction, you'll be met with bumper-to-bumper traffic. about 14 miles of heavy traffic. and this is what it's doing to your drive time. so if you are heading out of tracy into dublin, that will take you just under 15 minutes, already at the very early hour. highway 4 from antioch to concorde, 23 minutes. so that is also now quickly building, and 101 heading southbound, san rafael into san francisco, that is 16 minutes. and outside we go, here's a quick look. this will be your live picture at san rafael, so coming into san francisco, right over towards central san rafael there, you can see the clear conditions, no accidents and no construction. ama, eric? >> thank you, leyla. and seven things to know as you start your day. >>. >> also, a special celebration in san francisco as a man known for making a difference in thousands of lives, gets a big surprise. the new study that reveals just how many people in a large u.s. city emergency room had topped the weekend box office with $25

we know it's tough, but wake up. you've got to go to work, just like we did. thanks for joining us, i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm ama daetz in for kristen sze. >> yes, you are. we thank you for getting up early and working for us this morning. mike has a look at the red flag warnings. >> we'll start with doppler hd, because we have to have some storms to get the red flag warning. you can see san rafael, heading out to lucas valley road, where we're seeing some of the better radar returns right now. this is all sliding off towards the west. and over the next 30 minutes or so, it should be out over the ocean. so let's talk about the humidity. it is up right now. that's why our fire danger is down. we don't have any thunderstorms. we have high humidity. and we have fairly light winds. they're calm to about 8 miles per hour. but that all changes as we head through today. all the way to 3:00 wednesday morning. that's when we'll have thunderstorms and we'll have the dry thunderstorms with lightning
5:31 am
that could spark some fires. ama? >> all right, mike, thank you. red flag warnings, as we said, have been issued for much of the inland bay area ahead of the thunderstorms that we could see starting today. the concern is the dry lightning. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us live from the cal fire station in sunol with the latest. amy? >> reporter: good morning, ama. yeah, that's one you don't hear very often in the bay area, the threat of dry lightning. firefighters here at this cal fire station are taking the threat very seriously. they say the dry elements that we have right now coupled with the possibility of a lightning strike in a -- that could just create huge problems. they point out that not only could that spark a fire, but it's likely going to be in a remote, tough place for them to get to, and they have brought in extra firefighters from around the state just in case. >> we bring engines wherever we have the fire threat. we don't have a threat all over the state. so we bring those resources, we move them -- it's like chess pieces. we move them in. >> reporter: fires are already
5:32 am
burning around the state. in butte county, there are erratic winds that are fuelling a fire. that one has forced hundreds of people to evacuate. they've got it at 45% contained and it's burned about 2,000 acres. an even bigger fire is raging in the tahoe national forest, almost 14,000 acres have burned there. so it's a busy time of year for firefighters, and the threat of dry lightning here in the bay area does not help. they've put up red flag warnings in effect until tomorrow morning. reporting live in sunol, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. the high fire danger is giving new urgency to a town hall meeting on the future of fire protection services. budget cuts have forced the fire district to cut seven engine companies. the district wants community input on the best way to provide protection. the first of three town hall meetings will be held tonight at 6:30 at the pittsburg community library on power avenue. 5:32. time now for a look at traffic
5:33 am
out there. >> that's right. leyla has the latest. leyla? >> folks getting an early start going to work and also an early start going to school. summer is over for some kids. as we take a look, another one, another look at the altamonte pass out of tracy and into dublin. you can see how far back that slowing is stretching. well now, we are at about an hour out of tracy and into dublin. it does clear up once you pass dublin interchange. as we continue in the east bay, if you're heading through millipede as, up towards fremont, 680, the nimitz, you can see clear conditions. we had the problem last week with the overturned mail truck. that was on northbound 680. so nothing in the way of that this morning. we are looking at a slight slowdown as you pass over mission boulevard, but the rest of the commute is moving fine. the drive into fremont, union city, not bad at all. over to the ways app where we do have some reporting, a pothole on westbound 80, and if you are traveling away from highway 4 and down towards 580, you will be seeing that. be very careful out there.
5:34 am
you can track your own traffic with the abc 7 exclusive ways app, go to google play or the app store. ama, eric? >> leyla, thank you. new details now on breaking news we're following out of fresno county this morning. two men and a woman have been killed after their car collided with a freight train. two other people were taken to the hospital. it happened in the town of malaga south of fresno around 2:00 this morning. we're told the victims were crossing the tracks at about 40 miles an hour when they were hit. it's not clear if they were trying to beat the train. no one on the train was hurt. the tracks are closed right now and the coroner is on the scene as officers investigate that accident. new this morning, a 25-year-old man who fell off a cliff in half moon bay has died. the man fell about 100 feet yesterday near the 18th hole on the ocean course of the half moon bay golf course near the ritz carlton hotel. he was airlifted to stanford hospital but later died from his injuries. no word yet on his identity. hotel officials say they're not sure if the man was a guest, but have confirmed he is not from the area.
5:35 am
today, the chp is expected to release its findings to the public about that deadly limousine fire on the san mateo bridge that killed five women. in an exclusive report we brought you first on friday, abc 7 news has learned the chp has not found any evidence to press charges against the limo driver orville brown. sources tell us investigators have concluded brown was not on the phone with his estranged wife before the fire broke out on may 4th, despite her claims that the two were arguing and he was distracted. sources also tell us the fire was likely started after air springs in the limo deflated, causing the vehicle to drop onto its back tires, near the gas tank. five bay area residents are facing kidnapping charges in southern california. the suspects you see here are all from san jose and gilroy. they're accused of kidnapping an 18-year-old woman at gunpoint in compton with the intention of forcing her into prostitution. the riverside sheriff's department said they took her to a marin valley hotel.

5:38 am
