6:01 am
of dry lightning. they have noticed the dry conditions here in the bay area, but they are really paying close attention to the predictions of the dry lightning. they have even called in firefighters from other parts of the state. so forecast is calling for thunderstorms in the bay area anytime between now and tomorrow morning. these storms aren't expected to produce rain but could create lightning strikes, and that, along with these dry conditions, is a nightmare for firefighters. >> lightning doesn't just land near the side of the road. it's out in the middle of nowhere. we have to either hike into it, fly into it, use air resources to get to it. >> reporter: fires are already raging outside of the bay area in butte county, more than 400 structures are threatened by a wildfire and hundreds of people have had to evacuate. they've got that one 45% contained. and in the tahoe national forest, firefighters are dealing with a fire that's burned almost 14,000 acres. that one is 49% contained.
6:02 am
there is a red flag warning in effect for inland parts of the bay area right now, and firefighters say you combine the dry conditions and the lightning strike, it could cause some serious problems. reporting live in sunol, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> all right, amy, thanks a lot. it's 6:02. let's follow up with mike with a look at the forecast. >> we'll start with live doppler hd. good morning, everybody. tracking a few sprinkles as they move away from bolinas, and just sprinkles are probably not even reaching the ground, but it gives you an idea of how juicy the air mass is. it's definitely humid for us. let's talk about the ingredients you need. you need low humidity for a high fire danger. we're 75% to 100. so this morning, we're doing fine as far as that goes. we need, also, some gusty winds. we're calm to about 6 miles per hour. so this morning, we're doing fine. so far. all right. but as we head through today, tomorrow, and wednesday morning,
6:03 am
this whole area in red is under a high fire danger for dry thunderstorms. that's why the lightning reaches the ground, which can get up to 50,000 degrees, sparks from the storms, but no rain to put them out. also gusty winds can help the fire spread rather rapidly. anywhere not along the bay shore and the coast, that's where we have the high fire danger until 3:00 wednesday morning. now, let's bring in leyla for a look at the traffic. >> yeah, a busy one. kids are going back to school today as well, so that's adding a pinch to your commute. as we take you right into solano county, however, traveling through vacaville, you will notice a bit of a jam here westbound side of 80. the alamo onramp is partially blocked due to a four-car crash there. you can see it is causing delays. where we are seeing massive delays is over the altamonte pass, the westbound direction, right out of tracy from before 405 as you make your drive into livermore and dublin, and this is how long it will take you, 50

6:05 am
the rear of the limo somehow deflated, setting off a domino effect that killed those five women. the chp decided the end of july there was no evidence to press criminal charges against the driver orville brown or the owner of the limousine company. but then, brown's estranged wife said publicly the two argued on his cell phone shortly before the fire as he was driving, and he was playing music too loudly and not paying attention. sources told abc 7 news the chp reviewed the cell phone records and determined he had not been on the phone with his wife during the fire and there was noer evidence to charge him criminally. investigators from several different agencies, including the chp and also the foster city fire department and the d.a.'s office are expected to release their findings later today at 1:00 at the redwood city chp headquarters. they're also expected to release some of the recordings from the 911 calls on may 4th. reporting live in foster city, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. the family of the oakland

inland bay area ahead of the thunderstorms we could see starting today. the concern is lightning, dry lightning. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us live from the cal fire station in sunol with more. amy? >> reporter: yeah, they're gearing up here, eric, for that threat. imagine dry lightning striking just across the street on that dry hillside over there. and that's not what they're worried about, at least there it would be right across the street. but firefighters point out that lightning usually strikes in a remote, tough place to get to. so they have brought in extra firefighters from around the state just in case. they are very worried about the threat of dry lightning in the bay area. it is in place until tomorrow morning. they're taking this threat very seriously. >> we bring engines wherever we have the fire threat. we don't have a threat all over the state. so we bring those -- those resources -- we move them. we move -- like chess pieces, we move them in. >> reporter: fires are already
6:31 am
burning around the state. in butte county, erratic winds are fuelling a fire that has forced hundreds of people to evacuate. they've got that one 45% contained, and nearly 2,000 acres have burned there. and even bigger fire is burning in the tahoe national forest. almost 14,000 acres burned there. so it's a busy time of year for firefighters. anyway, now they have the threat here in the bay area of dry lightning. a unique threat. but a very real one. they're worried about it, about a red flag warning in place until tomorrow morning just in case, they want everyone to be aware. reporting live from sunol, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you very much. let's see how the weather is going to develop over the day. mike? >> all right. right now, yeah, it will develop over the day. but right now, we're watching the one lone radar return move off point rays and move into the ocean and move away from us. all is quiet this morning on live doppler hd. so let's talk about what it
6:32 am
takes for a high fire danger. it takes really low relative humidity, less than 25%. right now, we don't have that. most of us above 60%. we also need gusty winds. we don't have that this morning, either. most of the winds are calm, if not up to six miles per hour. but as we head into the afternoon hours, that will all change. the humidity will drop, the temperature goes up. thunderstorms will develop anywhere in this red area, and they'll be dry thunderstorms. that means the lightning reaches the ground, 50,000 degrees fahrenheit possible, but the rain does not. what also reaches the ground are locally gusty winds from the thunderstorm itself, and that's what helps the fire spread rapidly. so if you look around the bay shore, santa clara valley, out at the coast, you're okay. everybody else, high fire danger through 3:00 wednesday morning. leyla? >> all right. we have a few problems out there, mike, and the traffic is really loading up now. as we take you back into solano county, vacaville, the four-car crash blocking leans and
6:33 am
partially blocking the alamo onramp to westbound 80. you can see now it's solid bumper-to-bumper traffic from 505. very busy there. it does ease up as you head farther in the westbound direction. as we continue over to san francisco, san bruno area, westbound 380, right at the 280 interchange, we do have a big rig that lost a load of lumber, and they're backing up in lanes trying to pick some of the lumber up. so lanes blocked, san bruno avenue the at that if traffic should get too terrible. we also have this, concrete debris in lanes, eastbound 580, causing damage to some cars. one car actually there, a gas tank got punctured and oil is now on the road. it could cause slick conditions. eric, ama? >> leyla, thank you. 6:33. new details on the breaking news out of fresno county this morning. two men and a woman have been killed after their car collided with a freight train. two other people were taken to the hospital. this happened in the town of malega south of fresno around 2:00 this morning. this is new video just in to the
