to make it into the middle 80s. today cooler with a stronger sea breeze. what about tomorrow? i will tell but that and we will update you on the fire in yosemite. we are looking at a pretty decent week ahead, but come back and we will detail it for you. >> we will need it. we have developing news on the wildfire burning into yosemite. it has swelled to more than 125,000 makers. here's the latest map showing just how large the rim fire has grown. abc7 news reporter john always stan has more on the fight to bring it under control. >> names to continue to hold the hillside. the night side makes it easier to see the actual fires burning under all the smoke. some crews were put on standby to make sure the flames don't jump over to the south side of highway 120. a few miles away from groveland, hundreds of people gathered to hear an update and to and questions.

from the fire is going. as you can see, it's heading northeast over tahoe and all the way to reason owe and avoiding the yosemite valley all together. there are no smoke problems in the park area. the governor has declared a city of emergency for the city and county of san francisco because of the threat the fire poses to the city's utility and water supply. >> this bartender is getting ready for a busy night at theoutter bar. but one thing he depends on nightly is clean, freshwater out of the tap. >> people need to drink water to stay sober and cleaning. i mean, the list goes on. >> but the massive rim fire burning near yosemite is threatening hetch hetchy, a vital source that provides water to 2.6 million people in the bay

area. the transmission declared an area, activating this situation room to monitor the fire. the biggest concern is ash falling into the reservoir. these digital gauges are monitoring water quality in realtime. for now levels are safe. >> it doesn't happen immediately. we would actually see the cloudiness or turbidity increase slowly, giving us time to make adjustments so there would be no disruption in water service to any of our customers. >> local water supplies can be tapped into as a backup, but hetch hetchy is also a big source of power. it keeps the lights on inside every public building in san francisco and keeps muni rolling. two out of three powerhouses are now off-line to prevent lines from arcing and endangering firefighters, but they may already be damaged. >> we don't any the condition of our above grind facilities, electric transmission lines, power outages and cartages and

house wes have up in the sierras. >> pge is selling power to the city to make up the difference. >> great any are looking out for us. devastate to go some of the smaller businesses if they didn't have a simple anything like water. >> steve said he didn't take his water for granted. protecting the supply is now the challenge from a wildfire still raging. developing news where police are investigating a shooting in the marina district. it happened just after 11:00 last night on fillmore street. no word on the victim, the suggestion expects or the injury, but we will have more on the story as it develops. a shooting a couple of hours earlier in san francisco sent one person to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. police tell us shots were fired on treat avenue in the mission district just after seven. the victim's injuries are not life-threatening. police are still looking for the shooter.

there is at search today for a missing east bay toddler. 22-year-old daphne webb was reported missing in july by her father. they will use search and officers using specialized equipment and cadaver dogs. they are now this both as a missing person and a homicide case. police are searching for the hit-and-run driver who triggered a fatal freeway accident in livermore last night. a car hit a motorcycle on 580 just before 5:00 p.m. that caused the motorcycle to collide with a big rig. the driver died at the scene. the other driver took off. part of 580 was shut down for several hours >> two children and a man are safe after being rescued from their jet skis. the man in his 30s and ages 7 and 9 were reported overdue while outjet skiing yesterday evening. one of the jet skis started

sinking and the group could not get back to land. the contra costa sheriffs deputies found them around ten and pulled them from the water. they were checked out because of the extreme cold but did not have to be taken to the hospital. happening today, there will be rallies in washington d.c. to commemorate the 50th anniversary on the march on washington. take a live look at washington d.c. right now where some of today's event -- we don't have a live shot. i apologize. events today are scheduled to get underway within the hour. the march on washington is where dr. martin luther king, jr. delivered his famous "i have a dream" speech. it raises information about poverty, unemployment and other social issues. the four year anniversary of the march is wednesday. the bay area will have several events commemorating the march today. in san rose the naacp is holding a short meeting followed by a one-mile march.

begins at 9:00 at st. james park. oakland the bay area black worker center is sponsoring a rally at 1:00 on webster street. in san francisco an lbgt coalition is holding a meeting on city hall. it will pay respect to a gay rights leader. there is a toxic backs attack on civilians and people in syria has gone vial. allen wong has the story. >> about 100 members of the syrian american council in san jose urged the u.s. to respond to what appears to be a toxic gas attack on syrian civilians and residents. >> 60% are children and women. it's not rebels, it's children. >> the u.s. and the united nations are calling for an investigation into what killed

it's a little cloudky. temperatures in the mid-50s. it will warm up into the mid-60s there today. lisa argen of course will have more on the forecast coming up in just a little bit. knew this morning, japan's nuclear watch dog is worried about the leak of highly radioactive water at their power plants. specifically that the contaminated water could reach the pacific ocean. tokyo electric power said about 80,000 gallons of contaminated water leaked from the tanks, possibly through a seam. it's the fifth and worst since last year. they experienced multiple meltdowns in march of 200011 with the tsunami. san diego mayor bob figner grease to step down although he still denies the allegations. the city council accepted his resignation yesterday. women accuse him of forced kissing and making inappropriate comments.

washington national zoo today where a giant panda gave birth yesterday afternoon. labor took about two hours. you can hopefully make out the small cub on the floor of the cage. it's mom's third cub. one died last fall. the other cub born in 2005 survived. san francisco's new baby gorilla got a new visitor yesterday. they released the film yesterday of this one month ole gorilla kicked off by congresswoman jacksy speer. we have information on our website under "see it on tv." a new south korean car is taking the car sub compact to a whole new level. it's called the armadillo. it looks like a high car golf cart but here's the thing. when you get ready to park, the armadillo folds itself in half. they said the car is a potential

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting off with a quick first look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. temperatures mainly in the 50s except oakland at 60. partly to mostly cloudy skies. the south winds up to 35 miles an hour. 59 mountain view. san jose, 57 for you. we take you to oakland this morning, you notice we are looking at a sunny afternoon. but temperatures will be on the mild side. mid-and upper 60s today. 68 downtown oakland. mostly cloudy skies along the coast. we will see a few peaks of sun with mid-50s to near 60s. we will be cool and breezy here. inland is where you will find the cooler weather. we are going down another few degrees for the end of the weekend. i'll have that for you coming up. katie. >> lisa, thank you.

we have breaking news right now out of marin city where list, and law enforcement is investigating a fatal stabbing. it happened around 11:00 last night at an apartment on cole drive. a woman was stabbed. the suspect bored a transit bus and they were able to track him down in the marina district. at some point a park police officer opened fire on the suspect. he was taken to the hospital. no word yet on his condition. police believe the suspect did know the stabbing victim. the incident is under investigation. when the new eastern span of the bay bridge opens september 3rd, it will have been nearly 24 years since the earthquake set in motion plans for a replacement span. and 11 years since construction began. the bridge shuts down for the final phase of construction four days from now, on august 28th. and should reopen september 3rd. abc7 news transportation

reporter heather ishimaru has a look back. >> it's incredible to think that in just three years from 1933 to 1936, the bay bridge was built. opening nine months ahead of schedule. for decades cars shared the upper deck while trucks and what was called the key train crossed below. that would end in 1958 with an eastbound lower deck and the upper westbound. dustin hoffman evidently didn't get the message as he made his way to berkeley in the he were deck in the 1967 movie the graduate. the bridge stood unscathed until 1989. a great day for the baseball game. the giants and a's were in the world series. then. >> vacate, vacate. >> we are having an earthquake. >> the earthquake had collapsed the freeway, set san francisco's marina ablaze, and the bay bridge had taken a hit. >> an entire section of the bay bridge has been lost. >> the bridge was closed for a

month. commuter crushed on to bart and were left steaming in backups. it reopened, but was declared unsatisfy just months later. >> governor arnold schwarzenegger wanted to go cheap and build a bridge similar to the san mateo, basically a long ramp. it brought is storm of protests. finally a deal for more expensive design paid for by tolls, state and federal funds w its cost projected at $2.6 billion, in the end the new span would cost over $3.5 billion more than that. it would be the biggest public works project in the state's history. construction began in 2002. >> this will be the strongest bridge in america, bar none, and arguably the strongest bridge in the world. >> over the years, as with any project of this size, there would be problems n2005 bad welds made headlines and prompted investigations. more recently galvanized seismic safety bolts cracked when tight

he crashed his patrol call while responding to an emergency call. yesterday officials gathered to break ground on the bradley moody memorial underpass. the family was at the dedication. traffic gets congested by a railroad crossing. officer moody's brother is also a richmond police officer. he said the by pass will save lives. >> we have a lot of police officers that have to take this roadway during calls for service and this will eliminate them from being held up and being able to do our jobs. >> it will estimated to cost around $40 million. ." it will open to traffic 23 is 18 months >> a project is almost finished, not the bridge, but the caldecott tunnell. the fourth bore is nearing completion. laura anthony got a look inside the tunnel. >> no broken bolts here. in the new part of the caldecott construction, where construction
