>> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us on this sunday, august 25th. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, carolyn. we are starting off with the live doppler hd. the weak weather system is not only bringing us clouds but the chance of a few light sprinkles. here we are at 9:00 this morning. you see a few returns right off the coast of point reyes this morning and we will continue to put it in motion through noontime. the clouds do scattered out and we will be left with a partly cloudy afternoon. aside from the morning chance of showers, the sea breeze kicks up and it also works to scatter out the cloud cover, bring us

sunshine. keeping the numbers cool, though. we are talk about a modern warmup in the days ahead. >> we continue to follow the wildfire burning near yosemite. the fire has burned nearly 130,000 acres. it's just 7% contained. more than 5500 homes are threatened. 11 were destroyed. officials worry the number could rise. john alston has the latest on the fire from tuolumne county. >> one weapon against the fire is a business central that shoots an in -- the beginning area before the fire can. large fires flared into largers ones in an instant. winds shifted every few seconds. >> i have lived here near eighth

grade. >> some residents were allowed to key their properties for the first time in weeks. this couple, both originally from the bay area, lost two homes that had been in their family for years. the main house survived. >> we feel lucky to have this guy still standing, which was my family home in high school. yeah, super close call for this house. >> there are custom houses that are cute to make this place look extra nice for guests and stuff. >> darma, who lives on the property, said firefighters did an honorable job. >> they were out here until the last seconds. we are thankful for those guys. >> the sky was dominated by a massive mushroom cloud. the fire reached about two piles from the hetch hetchy reservoir, san francisco's main water source. officials say so far water quality has not been affected. john alston, abc7 news.

>> you can see just how much smoke is going up into the atmosphere from the fire. this picture was taken yesterday from the international space station. check out this picture. you can see how high that smoke is rising. this photo was taken from the window of a plane. the smoke is about 30,000 feet into the air. this morning the state has financial aid to help pay for fighting the rim fire. a grant from fema gives california the funds to reimburse fire fighting expenses. governor jerry brown has expanded a state of emergency to include san francisco. the fire is approaching the hetch hetchy reservoir, as john mentioned, and three hydroelectric power stations, two of which are now turned off as a precaution. the city is using supplement power supplies now, and that's at a cost of more than $600,000. stay with abc7 news for continuing coverage of the yosemite fire and follow us on twitter at abc7 news bay area

for updates. this cell phone video shows a cabin being burned down in eldorado county. it's part of a 38,000 brush fire that is 70% contained this morning. that fire broke out at 3:00 afternoon, spreading quickly. residents of 80 homes have been forced to evacuate. we have breaking news out of union city where police are investigating a fatal shooting. it happened just after 2:00 this morning in the area of 11th and b streets. officers found one person dead at the seen and another person taken to the hospital. that person's condition is unknown. we will bring you more on this breaking news story as soon as an update becomes available. oakland police say they plan to search one more area for a missing toddler. 22-month-old daphne web -- webb was reported missing by her father in july. yesterday there was an intense

search after authorities received new information. lilian kim has the details. >> the family of daphne webb gathered in prayer before search teams headed out. dozens of volunteers and their cadaver dogs followed trails around oakland college in hopes of finding the girl. >> if he found something, he would sit at the source and i would go running up to see what was there and then i would call him away because it would be a crime scene so we would want to preserve it as well as we could. >> daphne has been missing since july 10th. her father tense to be a person of interest. he claims his daughter disappeared when he left her in the car with his 87-year-old mother. police department say why they are searching this spot but they say they are as committed as ever with solving the case. >> the oakland police department are pretty confident we will find out what happened to this baby. >> there were moments of hope. search and rescue teams found shovel and a pick they thought

could be related to the disappearance. police even call in a helicopter to take area photos of the area, but in the end they came up empty. family members are holding out hope daphne may still be out there believed. >> on one hand i'm relieved, but on the other hand we are still searching and we want our baby back. >> oakland police say there's one more area they plant to search but they won't say where or when just yet abc7 news. in developing news out of san francisco this morning, police are investigating a shooting in the city south of market neighborhood. >> it happened just after 2:00 inside a party bus located in the area of ninth and fullsome streets. nobody was inside the bus but they found shells and blood. police are searching for victims and suspect. san francisco police are looking for two men after a woman was shot at a boutique dog hotel.

she was working at the wag hotel at 14th and harrison streets around 7:00 last night. police say the men shot her in the leg during an attempted robbery, then ran off. that woman is expected to recover. san jose police are investigating the 33rd murder of the year in that city. officers responded to a call shortly after 1:00 yesterday afternoon downtown near north third and julian streets. they found a man shot at least once. he later died in the hospital. a five-year-old vallejo girl is being treated for serious injuries after falling from a second story endo. it happened on fairhaven way just after 6:00 last night. when firefighters arrived, the screen was off the window. little girl was on the ground. she was air lived to children's hospital oakland. her condition has not been released. a man mauled by a pit bull are hoping the owners will come forward. it happened at a popular off leash park in san francisco's

dog patch neighborhood. nick smith has the story. >> the next thing i knew he had her pinned on her back. >> ray said he was taking his dog skyler for a walk through this park when the ten-year-old beagle and lab mix was attacked. >> within seconds she was in the pet bull jaws and the pit bull was shaking her like a rag doll. >> these are the injuries she sustained after being mauled. this puncture to her gap and a tear on left side. a gaping wound that required multiple stitches. >> i question why he wasn't in control of his man in the first place. >> he con granted the man he thought was the owner of the pit bull. >> they started walking off. they fled the scene. >> a witness captured the scene with a smartphone. the incident is under investigation, and that they are working to identify the pit bull and its owner. >> i have been coming here 25 years. >> those who use the park regularly are worried it will give negative ammunition to

opponents of the off leash park. >> if one child is a bully or acts out in school, it ought not reflect on the entire student body. >> in san francisco, nick smith, abc7 news. it's a rare honor be stowed on the bravest service members. today president obama will award the medal of honor to a soldier who grew up in the bay area. staff sergeant ty carter was serving in afghanistan in 2009 when the army said he went above the call of duty to retrieve supplies for fellow soldiers while his company was under attack by more than 200 taliban fighters. sergeant carter will be the fifth living recipient to be awarded the medal of honor tore actions in iraq or afghanistan. congratulations. lisa argen is here now with a preview of the accuweather forecast. >> things are switching up a also bit this morning. we have the radar sweeping around the bay and picking up a little bit of drizzle over in

>> welcome back. isolates 5:13 on this sunday morning. thanks for waking up so early to join us for the abc7 sunday morning news. this is a live look from the emeryville cam. in that city a little bit of drizzle going on right now. in the low 60s. not much warmer later today. maybe into the high 60s. lisa argen will have all the facts and figures and your forecast if a few minutes. >> authorities are investigating what led a strucking company employ' to go on a shooting spree that left two former colleagues dead and two others injured. the 72-year-old huberert allen junior shot them yesterday at several locations around florida. allen first shot and killed a 28-year-old former coworker,

then went a short distance and fatally shot his 80-year-old former boss. later he shot and wounded two other men before going home and killing himself. new this morning, ousted egyptian president miew baric will be in court today to face retrial in connection with the killing of protesters back in 2011. efforts flown by helicopter to a military courthouse this morning. he was released from prison and transferred to house arrest in the hospital. he was found guilty last year for failing to stop the killing of some 900 protesters in an 18-day uprising. his sentence was overturned on appeal. in morning there are still concerns that syria may have used chemical weapons in the government's fight against insurgents, with the white house now saying there is very little doubt chemical weapons were

used. yesterday president obama held a white house meeting with his national security advisors to discuss the situation. abc news chief global affairs correspondent martha raditz tells us what this could mean for the united states. >> evidence of a chemical attack in syria is mounting. new images showing the horror. the president spent the day huddled behind closed doors with his national security team, weighing the evidence and has military options. >> we are still gathering information about this particular event, but it is very troublesome. >> among the options on the table, targeting syrian military or government buildings cruise missiles. four destroys are in thary with tomahawk missiles. u.s. fire jets could also attack, firing from outside syrian airspace so pilots would be out of harm's way. >> the administration has been very fourth come in saying that risk must be low.

we cannot risk getting servicemen and women hurt, and we don't want to get pulled into another quagmire in the middle east. >> nothing will happen until the u.s. confirms the chemical attack. syrian state tv claims the rebels were behind the attack. abandoning the position that no chemical attack occurred. u.n. officials in syria are push fourth access to the site for inspection. the group doctors without borders said that 3600 patients with neurotoxic symptoms were treated the day of the suspected attack. they say 355 of those patients died. coming up later this morning on "this week" martha raditz will have more on the middle east crisis from cairo. you can watch "this week" right here on abc7 at 8:00. in san francisco a group gathered at a public vigil in union square yesterday to remember the victims of the attack in syria.

many say they do want the obama administration to intervene. >> we are asking the u.s. government to support the syrian army so we can defend ourselves. we are dealing with a dictator never been heard of, and killing with a greenlight from the west. the more extensions they give him, the more killing he's doing. >> president obama said last year the use of chemical weapons by syria would cross a red line. people at the vigil say the line has already been crossed repeatedly. while outgoing san diego mayor bob figner is preparing to leave office. he is being investigated. 17 women, including a university dean and a retired navy admiral, have accused filner of inappropriate behavior. his resignation was part of an agreement.

the city will pay his legal expenses related to a sexual harassment lawsuit and offer him up toed $8,000 if he chooses to hire his own lawyer. visitors heading to yosemite can get in free today if the rim fire burning near the park doesn't descendents courage them. all 401 national parks will offer free admission today in honor of the 97th annual anniversary of the park service. it was created on august 25, 1916. emirates new zealand is one victory aray from racing for the america's cup. the team set a speed record on the racecourse yesterday with the help of strong winds. the kiwis topped out at 47.2 knots, going nearly twice the speed of the wind. they sped away from italy's luna rossa in race 7 to take the 6-1 lead in the best of 13 louis vuitton cup challenge. race 8 was postponed until today because of the high winds. it is scheduled to begin at 1:10

los gatos and half moon bay coming in in the low 60s. golden gate bridge, can't really make out too much here. a bit of drizzle, perhaps, as you are heading on out on the windshield woppers if you you ae going out for a run or bike ride. don't be surprised if you run into some wet pavement. 64 in fairfield, but 60s santa rosa to novato. mt. tam, you see the beginning of sunday morning with just a slight chance of sprinkles in the north and san francisco. otherwise we will be partly cloudy, a couple degrees cooler today. we did manage a few 80s yesterday. it was 69 degrees half moon bay. today with that system pushing on shore, it should mix out the marine layer. we will see some sunshine. a gradual warming trend going through the rest of the work week. the last week of august. so here's the area of low pressure. notice extreme northern california we have the return here. as we continue to put the clock in motion, you will notice that the flow brings the air from the ocean. that will keep us on the cool

side, a couple degrees cooler than yesterday. most of the activity heading to the north. we still have the dense smoke advisory for the northern sierra, and things look clear for the southern syria. in the south bay numbers will be cooler. you managed about 80 yesterday. in san jose 76 degrees. look for 80 in los gatos. 73 in sunnyvale. on the peninsula, low clouds and fog. turning partly cloudy this afternoon. 76 redwood city with 6 in milbrae. san francisco a few degrees of cooling. partly cloudy, 65. up in the north bay maybe a few sprinkles, a light shower. then you will see some sunshine with mid-70s. so the numbers a little cooler. the oranges just few and far between in the north bay. more up he were 60s for berkeley. 70 union city today with another 72 in fremont. over the else you will see a sunny afternoon with a nice temperature today in concord. 81 degrees. 82 in livermore. candlestick park, of course, it's always breezy there.

>> panda caretakers at washington national zoo will try again today to get a close-up look at the tiny new resident, a day old panda cub. you see the birth in this video provided by the zoo. zookeepers need to do a health check t takes only a few minutes, but mamma panda hasn't given them an opportunity to take her cub, which is about the size of a stick of butter. once they do get a chance, caretakers will listen to the cub's heart and lungs, record its weight and collect a dna sample. people ran for their lives during the first-ever great bull run held in the u.s.

toll plaza are closed this weekend for that work. the toll lane closers run through 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. today activists will form a expect line in san francisco to protest russia's anti-gay propaganda law. today's protest follows other demon strikes necessary san francisco, protesting anti-gay laws in russia. earlier this month demonstrators poured vodka on the sidewalk in front of city hall as a part of a growing boycott of russian products. it starts this morning at st. nick las russian orthodox church on 15th street in san francisco. space, the final frontier, , and one that california hopes can bring new business to the state. california lawmakers are trying to get a jump on other states to woo new space companies to set up shop here. there is currently a bill in sacramento that would protect manufactures of spaceships and parts suppliers from liability in most cases if a traveler would get hurt or killed on a

voyage. several other states have already passed similar laws. tomorrow there will be a public meeting in sonoma county to discuss a multimillion-dollar safety project for charles m schultz at the sonoma county airport. construction impacts such as noise and construction will be discussed at the meeting. the $58.6 million project is part of a federal man date to make airports safer. it includes extending the main runways by more than 800 feet that will allow regional jets to service the airport. construction, which gets underway next wrote, is expected to be completed by fall of next year. a lot of people may not know that thousands of children suffer from arthritis. abc7 news anchor cheryl jennings learned more about that painful illness through the taylor family foundation, which hosted a camp for children with the joint disorder. in this morning's assignment 7 report, cheryl shows us the camp is a place where they can learn

to manage their disease. this music therapy is the newest fun and creative way to help these children, who live with a life-long disease. they all have a form of arthritis, which was a shocking diagnosis for them and their families. >> i always thought it was only for old people, for some reason. but now that i have it, now i see all these kids that have arthritis. so it's kind of like changed my mind. >> arthritis is really bad when i was young, but it's gotten a lot better. this is like a different version of arthritis. >> i would say arthritis is just in its simplest form, inflammation of the joint, and that can include swelling, it can include redness. >> these youngsters are among the growing children who are finding their way to the free summer camp provided by the taylor family foundation in livermore. each camp is individually

designed for the children's special needs. >> we work closely with the doctors, the nurses, the counselors, the camp directors, and we huddle and we meet and we talk about what does their camp look like for the best experience. >> the name of this camp is spanish for miracle. it's the only camp in northern california designed for children 8 to 13 with juvenile arthritis and related auto immune disorders. >> the model of the cam, kids get arthritis too. a lot of us don't even know that, but the numbers of staggering. 3,000 kids in the bay area, 38,000 in california, and nearly 300,000 across the rest of the country. those are just of the kids they know about. >> girls are affected more than boys. we usually see about two-thirds girls, one-third boys. i don't think they know why yet. they are still looking for a cause and cure. >> in basketball it hurts my knees and sometimes when i shoot my elbow hurts. >> daniel is now twelve. he started showing symptoms when

he was three, but nobody thought to look for arthritis. he started limping as he got older and was finally diagnosed two years ago by a specialist. >> my fingers do get sore. >> 13-year-old lindsay was diagnosed with systemic arthritis when she was three. but it took time to figure out. >> i always thought like i had bone tumors are leukemia so it was really scary for my parents. >> the kids share information about medications, injections and sad stories from outside camp because they can't keep up with school activities or because they look different. >> so what happens if you don't take your medicine? >> usually my giants will hurt a little bit. like if i write or something like that, it will hurt here. oh i get puffy. >> it's challenging in a lot of our children facing it on a daily basis. >> i was so scared they might make fun of me so i never aid it. >> what do you want kids to know now about this disease.

like it's fogged in there, a little overcast today. in the city itself, cloudy. upper 60s today. lisa argen will be along with a full accuweather forecast coming up. the 50th anniversary of the march on washington is wednesday. but some commemorations have already again, including yesterday's ceremony in the nation's capitol. i talked with two men who were there 50 years ago, one a close advisor to dr. king, who was honored last week at usf, the other a well-known local activist. >> it's been described as both a protest and celebration. the march on washington, august 28, 1963, was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. >> what it it feel like to be in the middle of that? >> it felt like -- it felt like something was going to not only happen, but that i was in it and made me realize that i was about

something that was going to really make history. >> now 83 years old, reverend cecil williams said it was thrilling to be in the crowd of 250,000 moved by the now famous "i have a dream" speech. >> once that had been said and the message had begun, i said, that's it, i'm going to san francisco now. >> reverend williams had just been assigned to glide church and was moving that month to san francisco. this picture he provided shows the then 33-year-old challenging unequal education for black students in the city. he said his activism, which endures to this day, was inspired by dr. king. standing on the stage near dr. king was dr. clarence jones, mlk's close friend and legal advice sore. he even helped draft part of the famous speech. >> when dr. king spoke on

august 28, 1963, he was speaking as the morale america. he was speaking to the conscious of america. >> jones is now a professor at usf. >> i want to have the chance to celebrate the dream and i also want to have the chance to kick butt, when necessary, for those interfering with the dream. san francisco celebrated the march on washington yesterday. he said things have not changed in 50 years because today's struggle is still all about justice. >> because it really is about economic justice. it's about housing justice. it's about racial justice. it's about healthcare justice. it really is about justice. how can we be of service to justice today? >> members of the lgbt community, who put together the rally, also paid homage to a gay man who was a confidant to

dr. king who helped organize the 1963 march. and all those commemorations going on in the nation's capital. pretty nice weather there, lisa. >> in the 80s. getting stickier and stickier for the days ahead so that worked out well. we are looking at this morning, milder temperatures here, anywhere from two to thirteen degrees warmer and that's due to all the cloud cover. in emeryville we have a little bit of drizzle. that could stay in the forecast for the next several hours. i'll let you know what the sunshine returns and when the temperatures -- what they will be like for the rest of the month. that's straight ahead. >> thank you, lisa. also next, the a's snap is three-game losing streak in baltimore, gaining some ground tonight first-place rangers. mike

here's mount tam. you see the layering of the clouds, the chloe clouds about 1200 feet. we have the mid-level clouds here. so nice looking start to the day. partly cloudy this afternoon. temperatures, instead of the mid-80ths inland, lower 80s. mid-60s today. as we go through the rest of the the work week, maybe a few degrees of warming. if you see any sprinkles out there, you need the wipers, that's definitely a possibility in and around oakland. san francisco up in the north bay, with all that cloud cover look at the mild start this morning. napa and novato as much as 13 degrees warmer than yesterday. even in the south bay, san carlos airport, mountain view and san jose a milder start. with the cloud cover this morning and the system offshore we will continue to see the clouds around for the next couple of hours with some holes in the overcast so the morning sprinkles, through about 10:00, and then higher clouds throughout the early afternoon, we will look for the numbers to stay rather seasonal with 70s
